This is for Jessie, who pestered me to write it. Also, I don't own. Tell me what you think though, it would prove to be helpful. Thanks.
The building was highly large with a cheerful demeanor but I knew better. The sign on the perfectly landscaped front yard read ‘St. Maries Institute’. This was to be my new home for a while. When I was younger, my friends and I would often make fun of the institute, heckling and trashing on the patients, calling them crazy and insane. All too often, we would place a Mental in between the words Maries and Institute. Back then I laughed and laughed at their words and even made some of the jokes myself. That was before I knew I would be a patient here. That was before I knew I would be living behind the pristine white walls. I am not crazy.
It had all started with these dreams. These dreams that kept me waking up in the morning hours, sweating profusely and breathing harshly and when I tried to think about what they meant, my mind would draw a blank. I couldn’t remember them. I knew that they were horrifying, strange but that was about it. I simply could not remember them. That had all started four months ago. After loosing sleep, I had begun to look like a royal mess. My mother had sent me to the family physician, extremely worried about the situation which she had deemed ‘unhealthy’. After getting a look at me, the doctor sent me to a psychiatrist also, stating thaprobprobably had anxiety. He had calculated that in the four months, I had slept three days total out of them. Not a lot is it. The doctor tried everything to get me to sleep after waking up from these dreams. We tried medications, new world remedies, and even home made concoctions. Nothing worked. At the same time, the psychiatrist had me writing in journals, meditating, and having me recite the events going on in my life, saying that if I had anxiety these remedies would help fix it. Again nothing helped. Between the two of them, they were perplexed, frustrated and unhappy with the progress. On a whim, they had sent me here, saying that this was the only place that would be able to help me. The institute had other patients like me that had turned out just fine. So here I was.
“Here we are.” My mother was besides me, also looking up at the large building in wonder. “It’s big.”
I nd, ud, unhappy with the whole situation.
She laughed slightly, slinging an arm around my waist. Looking over at her I noticed that I had grown some. Her height used to come to my eyes but now she came to my shoulder. “It’s going to make you better. I know that you don’t want to go in there.” I snorted at her comments and she laughed yet again. “But you know that we will visit you a lot. Don’t be worried.”
“I really would rather just go home.” I told her. “I don’t like it here.”
“Well, it’s only going to be a short stay and then you can come home.”
“Still, this place gives me the creeps.”
“You’ll be fine. I know that you will. Come on, let’s get you checked inn.”
Checking into the institute really didn’t take any time at all. We were admitted into a cozy waiting room, where a receptionist greeted us warmly. Her name was Lucy; she was a large woman with frizzy red hair and was fairly short. One could tell that she was an air head for she had claimed that she lost her pen twice even though it was in her own hand. As she realized this, she would laugh a bubbly laugh and then go back to work. The waiting room itself was, as I had put it before, cozy. There were a couple couches and chairs situated around a rock fire place. Lucy’s desk was situated next to a rather large and metal door, the only admittance into the rest of the institute.
In the twenty minutes that we had been there, we had met both Lucy, the receptionist, and Dr. Reynolds, chief resident doctor. Lucy sd lid like a nice lady, if a bit on the ditzy side. Dr. Reynolds was a different story. The scarscared me. Call it gut instinct but I was plain scared of him. He was tall and rather large but in a muscular sort of way wearing a pristine white over coat and a stethoscope around his neck. I do not believe it was his dark complexion that sent my nerves on end, in all actuality, I don’t know why I am afraid of him. He just creeps me out.
“We’ll be visiting yolot.lot.” My mother told me as she enveloped me in a hug. Her mouth opened as if she were going to say more but the doctor cut her off.
“I’m sorry Mrs. but we do not allow for family to come and visit.” His voice was smooth as butter, I cringed just hearing it.
“What?”
“In the past, we have learned that it interrupts the patient’s recovery. We do allow for phone calls and letters though.” He smiled at her, placing a hand on her shoulder for comfort as heicediced her suddenly worried look.
I looked at my mr, wr, watching as she seemed to be in an eternal war with herself. “Don’t leave me here,” I whispered into her ear, although I wanted to scream, plead and demand. “I just want to come home.” My eyes pleaded with her, letting her know I was not comfortable and just wanted to come home.
She looked up at me, placing a hand on my cheek for strength and comfort. “It’s for the best. It will make you better.” She gave me a kiss on the cheek. “I love you Jason. I’ll see you again soon.” I saw tears well up in her blue eyes.
A hand was placed on my shoulder. I looked down at it, then up at the person it belonged to. Dr. Reynolds smiled at me and I suppressed a cringe. “Come along Jason, I will show you around the premises.” He began leading me toward the door.
I turned around, watching my mother as I was lead away from her. She had taken out a tissue and was currently wiping her tear stained cheeks with it. As we neared the , a , a very loud beep was heard and the large metal door opened. Dr. Reynolds led me through. I sent one last glance toward my mother, my own eyes tearing up as I watched the large metal door give off another beep before closing. I was now stuck inside the institute with no way out with one thing on my mind.
I was scared.
