You Can’t Control Destiny - Chapter One
“You are sooo lucky!” Came the envious sigh from behind her.
Natalietmantman turned from watching the touch-up to what would be the cave entrance to acknowledge a tall, blue-eyed blonde standing there.
“Oh, hi Fiona,” Natalie greeted with a smile. She turned back to watch, waiting for the call to take her place again on the set. “I’m lucky about a lot of things. Which one in particular are you referring to?”
“You have got to be kidding me!” Fiona laughed, looking down at Natalie, exaggeratingly tugging on her too short shorts. Her blue eyes skittered around the set only stopping when she found the source of her admiration. “Him!” Her head gestured a nod to Natalie’s right. Natalie turned her head a small fraction and inwardly groaned, not you, too!
“Ah,” Natalie nodded her head in understanding.
“How can you stand there so calmly and just say ‘Ah’” Fiona’s eyes hungrily took in the scene. “He is SO gorgeously sexy that every female from Sasha’s baby to Edna in wardrobe are drooling over him. We’re all wrapped around his little finger and he doesn’t even know it! Well, every female except you, that is.”
Natalie caught herself just before she rolled her eyes. She glanced over again and studied Hayden Christensen with a clinical air. Dirty blonde hair; blue eyes; beautiful, sincere smile, her eyes inventoried as they took a downward path. Very well built body, long lean legs…oops, he turned. Hmm, nice behind, too. As he straightened from retrieving the make up artist’s sponges she saw his eyebrows rise as the woman said something he found amusing. The low huskiness of his voice reached Natalie’s ears, but not the words. Still studying him she noted how the other women probably loved how he talked. Especially if it was a subject he was passionate about! No, no. Let’s see…especially if it was a subject he found interesting. Yes, that’s right. Passionate. Ha! I don’t see why they have to carry on so much. They practically swoon over him even when he’s not around!
“Yes,” came Natalie’s dry retort. “Hayden is a sweet kid.”
Fiona choked on her swig of bottled water and stared at Natalie. “Kid?!” she gasped, her mouth hanging open. “Kid? You call THAT a kid?” She threw her head back and laughed, a tinny ringing to Natalie’s ears, but it brought Hayden’s eyes curiously around, searching out the sound. When his eyes met hers she felt a tiny flutter, and annoyed with herself, shoved it down. She shook her head at him and let her eyes roll. Hayden grinned and went back to his conversation.
“Oh, honey, you’re taking your part way too seriously,” Fiona chuckled. “He’s no kid, that’s for sure!”
“I know that,” Natalie said crossly. “But he is sweet and a little shy.”
“On the screen he’s to-die-for,” Fiona practically growled.
“That’s on the screen,” Natalie pointed out. “Fiona, he’s an actor. It’s his job to become his character. He’s very serious about that.”
Fiona snorted and plucked at a nonexistent thread on her tight shirt. “Well, still waters run deep, my mum always says. If Hayden didn’t have those dark qualities of Anakin’s buried in him somewhere he couldn’t pull it off as well.” Hungrily her eyes wandered over him again. “He’s tall, good-looking, has a great body, killer smile…”
Natalie felt a spark of irritation igniting in her stomach.
“ And look at those hands. He’s got the fingers of a musician,” Fiona gestured towards him. Natalie found her eyes obeying and watched as he tried to make a point. “They’re long and slender. I bet he can make love like a…”
“Shut up, Fiona!” Natalie heard herself snap. Fiona jumped at the tone and Natalie swore silently and plastered an ironic smile on her face. “Please. I have to do this scene with him in a few minutes and I definitely don’t want to go standing next to him with THAT image plastered in my head! He’ll want to know what’s going on and what will I say then?” Mentally Natalie crossed her fingers and hoped she sounded good natured and humorous.
The call for places on the set poured relief through Natalie’s body. This conversation was going nowhere fast. At least nowhere she wanted to go! Fiona giggled and grabbed Natalie’s arm to hold her there a moment longer. “If he asks you, I give you my permission to tell him I said I bet he makes love like a velvet lion. Soft to touch and then out come the claws and WHAM! Phew!!” She fanned herself and snickered. “I need another bottle of ice water!” With that she winked at Natalie and sauntered away.
Natalie watched the tall girl sway her hips side to side. Humph! As if that walk of hers is real! Natalie fumed to herself. Her eyes checked the group nearby and noticed a few of the men’s heads turn. Casting a surreptitious glance at Hayden she swore at herself again when a tiny leap of pleasure kicked in the pit of her stomach. His head never turned to watch Fiona’s come-hither display. One thing about Hayden, he was serious about his work. Thank goodness!
When Natalie noticed she was practically marching to her mark in front of the cave entrance she abruptly stopped and gathered her wits about her. Taking a deep breath she released the tension from her shoulders then proceeded. Hayden glanced down at her, his blue eyes smiling.
“You ok, Nat?” he asked frowning slightly.
“Oh, yes, I’m fine,” Natalie quickly assured and smiled brightly at him. “You’re not going to throw me off the cliff when George yells ‘action’, are you?”
Hayden sighed dramatically and wagged a finger at her. “See? I told you to go over this with me! Then we’d know just how hard I can grab you and yank you into the cave. You’re so tiny I may hurt you!”
An unwanted vision of Fiona’s tall, busty body flickered in Natalie’s mind and she clenched her teeth. “I am NOT tiny,” she muttered darkly. “And I want it to look and feel real so I don’t want to know ahead of time how hard you have to grab me and pull me in!” Vivid brown eyes flashed up at Hayden and he raised his hands in mocking surrender.
“Ok, you win,” he relented with a lop-sided grin and stepped away to his mark.
Natalie wanted to cross her arms and stamp her feet. Tiny he’d called her! Like she was a child! How dare he! Belatedly she caught herself, remembering how she referred to him earlier as a sweet kid. She did not want to think about that right now. Her anger was deflating like a popped balloon. She wanted to stay angry with him and kick his shins. Hard.
“You’re beautiful when you’re angry!” Hayden called over to her in a stage whisper. When she whipped her head around to glare at him, he grinned and raised his eyebrows in an exaggerated leer. She collapsed into giggles.
“I hate you!” she whispered teasingly back, trying to look angry but failing miserably.
“Oh, you love me and you know it,” he made a face at her. George walked over and all play was gone as the 2 actors turned their energies to their work.
The workweek flew by. On Friday, Natalie was sitting off set reading when Fiona sped over to her and threw herself into the chair next to her. Natalie looked up to meet a face smug and satisfied.
“Guess what?” Fiona practically purred.
“Um, you won the Australian lottery?” Natalie joked.
“Oh, much better than that!” Fiona exclaimed. She leaned closer so no one else could hear. “Hayden took me to dinner last night!”
Natalie’s stomach rolled and lurched at the words. Schooling her expression she smiled congenially. “Did you have a nice time?”
“Oh, did I!” Fiona squealed. “He is SO hot! It was all I could do to not grab his hand and drag him to my bed!”
It felt as if a red-hot poker stabbed Natalie’s chest. Hayden was with Fiona? At her place? A lump caught in Natalie’s throat and she tried to clear it a few times before speaking.
“Um, where did you go for dinner?” Natalie attempted to sound interested. She chewed on her lower lip and looked down at the book. The words on the page blurred and ran together.
“I don’t know,” Fiona giggled and waved the question off. “The Cape, I think, but it was so cool! People were staring at us and I just know we’re going to be in the papers today!”
Well, that’s tacky, Natalie thought. The Cape. Yes, that sounds like Hayden. He usually grabs a quick bite there when he’s at the beach. He introduced me to those delicious veggie wraps last week when we were in a hurry to get to the studio.
“Well, was he as interesting as you thought he’d be?” she asked.
“Yes!” Fiona exclaimed. “Well, I don’t know what he was talking about exactly. I was too busy listening to the sound of his sexy voice and staring at that bod!” Fiona’s blue eyes focused on Hayden as he crossed the room. “I think it was something about some book he was reading. We didn’t stay long. He had to go study his lines, but, hey, it’s a start!”
Why don’t you drool a little more, Natalie thought sourly, as Fiona eyed Hayden’s backside. Fortunately, Fiona was called to wardrobe before Natalie whacked her with the book she held. Fiona waved goodbye and began her sashay across the floor. Natalie looked over at Hayden as he got out of his chair.
“Bye, Hayden!” Fiona sang out throatily and waggled her fingers at him. He smiled briefly and continued on his path towards Natalie. A frown creased Natalie’s forehead as he collapsed next to her.
“Are you all right?” she asked in concern but couldn’t help adding cattily, “Too much for you last night?”
“What?” Hayden mumbled and followed Natalie’s gaze. “Oh. Her. I never ate so fast in all my life!” Natalie giggled and pushed down the relief swirling up in her. “She basically invited herself to dinner and I was just too tired to argue. She doesn’t understand the word ‘no.’” A groan escaped his lips and his long fingers rubbed at his temples.
“Seriously, Hayden, are you Ok?”
“I’ve got a monumental headache,” he explained, wincing.
Natalie suddenly noticed his too bright eyes and flushed skin. Quickly she leaned over and laid her hand against his forehead.
“Hayden, you’ve got a fever!” she gasped, her hand lingering on his cheek. He pressed his face into her hand and closed his ewithwith a sigh. Guilt at the pleasure zinging through her forced her hand away. “Maybe you should go home.”
“One more scene,” he mumbled, tilting his head back. “One more and we’re done for the day. I can make it. I’m not a baby.”
“Oh, you men!” Natalie fumed at him. “You try to be so macho when you get sick and then you collapse and whine like little boys.”
“Nat,” came the short, stinging reply. “I said I’ll do the scene!”
Stunned, Natalie sat back. Hayden had never spoken to her in such a hard tone. While trying to decide whether to be offended or hurt she watched him heave himself to his feet and slowly make his way over to Rick McCallum, the producer. Heartily, Rick slapped Hayden on the back and Natalie caught Hayden grip the chair with one hand to hold himself steady.
Three hours and 30 takes later, George sighed and walked over to his 2 actors. Before he could say a word to him Natalie jumped to Hayden’s defense.
“Geo he’ he’s sick,” Natalie blurted out. A scowl crossed Hayden’s face but Natalie rushed on before he could stop her. “He’s got a pretty good fever going and he should be in bed.”
By now Rick had joined them and felt Hayden’s forehead. “She’s right, George. He’s pretty hot.”
“I’m fine,” Hayden stressed stubbornly.
“No, Hayden, you’re not,” George said quietly but with a stern look. Sighing, he turned to Rick. “They’re finished for the weekend. We can shoot some other stuff the rest of today. Natalie, get him to the nurse and have his temperature taken. Then Get. Him. Home.” George locked stares with Hayden as he opened his mouth to protest. “Drive him home. Your apartment is across the hall so get him to bed and keep an eye on him.”
Natalie nodded, her deep brown eyes casting worried glances at Hayden. When he did not move, she took his arm and tugged. “Come on, macho man, let’s report to sick bay.” His lack of a reply told her plenty.
The nurse read the ear thermometer and whistle“102“102.8. Get him home and to bed.” Rustling around the room she shoved various items into a bag and handed them over to Natalie. “Give him the Tylenol at home. He’s refusing to take it.” Natalie glared at Hayden who refused to look at her. “Here’s another thermometer...Hmm, would you like a hammer to hit him over the head with if he needs to be knocked out? He’s such a nice guy, but what a lousy patient!”
As Hayden began to get up Natalie put a hand on his shoulder and shoved him back down. “And where do you think you’re going?”
“Home,” came his terse reply.
“You are absolutely, positively NOT driving!” Natalie exclaimed, shocked. “I’ll drive you home as soon as we get out of costume. What is wrong with you? You’re always so nice! Oh, never mind! I’ll come get you when I’ve changed.”
Twenty minutes later Natalie rushed around searching for her patient. The nurse said he’d gone to wardrobe. “Oh, yes, he was here,” Fiona sighed loudly, fanning herself. “I had to help him get undressed. Mm-mmm! I almost got to see the whole enchilada!” She savored, closing her eyes to feast on the images of the near naked star.
“Where is he now?” Natalie bit out.
“I don’t know,” Fiona sighed again, only mournfully. ”I think he looked down my shirt and…”
“You have your shirt almost open to the waist!” Natalie advanced on the startled woman. “He didn’t have to LOOK down anything! It’s all on display!” She seethed, fingers itching to slap her. “Now which way did he go? I HAVE to find him!” He’s sick, she reminded herself. That’s why I’m upset. Not because of Fiona’s drooling. I’ve been put in charge of him, that’s all.
“Take it easy!” Fiona backed away from the smaller woman whose eyes were gleaming in anger. Natalie’s glare never wavered. “Uh…he went o…out the d…door,” Fiona stamm and and blushed as she buttoned a couple of the buttons on her shirt.
“Did he say anything?” Natalie advanced on Fiona. When an answer did not come forth fast enough she snarled slowly, “Did he say anything?”
Fiona cast her eyes about looking for help. Janice, her co-worker, shrugged and attempted to keep her mouth shut and stay as invisible as possible.
“H...He snapped at me when I didn’t give him his clothes fast enough, g...grabbed them out of my hand and got dressed,” Fiona admitted. “I was just teasing him and he almost exploded!”
“Natalie,” Trisha Beggar, the costume designer, peeked around a rack of clothes. “What’s going on?”
Finally a sane person! “Hayden has a fever of 103 and I have to get him home. He’s half out of id I d I don’t want him driving.”
Fiona’s face brightened. “I knew there had to be a reason he was so mean!” she fluffed her hair with her fingers.
“Fiona!” Trisha spoke sharply. Fiona jumped and whirled around. “Enough of this! Where did he go?”
Fiona rolled her eyes and flung a hand to the door. “I don’t know! He pulled his keys out of his pocket and stormed out!” She planted her hands on her hips. “It’s not my fault!”
Tightly, Natalie squeezed her eyes shut and took a deep breath. “Are you saying he was going to drive home?” Please tell me he didn’t! She prayed.
“I think that was his intention,” Fiona sniffed in offense. When Trisha’s eyes narrowed she attempted to defend herself. “I didn’t KNOW he was ill!”
Natalie’s foot struck a chair and it fell over with a thud. “ I TOLD him not to leave!” she raged, hands clenching into fists at her sides. “He’ll cause an accident!” Natalie felt the other 3 women staring at her in astonishment. Part of her seemed to be watching the other part of her throwing the fit. Never had she lost control of her emotions like this. But now she flung control aside and kicked out at another chair.
“Shit!” The curse echoed in the now silent room. Not stopping to apologize Natalie wrenched the door open and charged out. Her feet pounded on the floor, her legs pumping as hard as they could. Shouting a warning and dodging around people as she sped by, she reached the door to the outside in moments. She flung it open only to find Hayden’s parking spot empty. A strangled cry slipped passed her lips as she stared at the empty space.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid!” She berated herself. “Why did I leave him alone? Idiot!”
The door behind her crashed open as Ewan almost fell through it. “What in hell is going on?” he exclaimed, eyes darting around.
By now the anger had dimmed and an icy fear replaced it, the fingers crawling up her spine one by one. Digging frantically for her keys she shot out an explanation. “Hayden is out of his mind with a 103 degree temperature. He was not supposed to drive home. I was supposed to do it and I left him alone for 20 minutes because I’m an IDIOT!” Her fingers slipped and her purse fell to the ground spilling half its contents. Eyes blurred with tears she dropped to the ground blindly reaching for the items.
“Hey, easy now,” Ewan soothed, stooping to help her. “Do yout met me to go after him?”
“No, Ewan, I don’t,” she choked as Ewan pressed her car keys into her palm and gently pulled her to stand. She blinked rapidly. “I’ll take care of this. It’s my fault he’s behind the wheel not yours. He’s snapping everyone’s head off and arguing about anything and everything.”
“That’s not like Hayden,” Ewan’s brows furrowed in concern.
“It’s the fever.”
“You sure you don’t want me to go?”
“No. You have scenes to do. I’ll take care of him. I’m right across the hall. If you don’t hear from me it means I’ve found him,” she breathed deeply.
“Can you drive?” Ewan asked, tilting her chin and inspecting the brown eyes.
“Yes,” she nodded, finding the key to start the car. “I’m fine. I’ll get him and when I do, he’s taking this medicine! I’ll stay with him until the fever goes down.”
The car crawled through traffic. Over and over Natalie begged the traffic to move, her eyes continually searching for Hayden’s car. An eternity passed in agonizingly slow motion. Every time traffic stopped she ran her fingers through her already tousled brown hair. Her heart stopped when she spotted a silver car just like Hayden’s then started again sluggishly. It was a woman driver.
Finally turning onto the street where the building stood she forced herself not to floor the gas pedal. The building George had put them in sat right at the edge of the beach and too many people mingled about. The last thing she wanted was to cause an accident herself!
Natalie breathed a sigh of relief when she turned into the parking lot only to hold it again as she spotted Hayden’s car drunkenly parked in a space. At least he’s gotten this far! I’ll re-park his car after I check on him, she promised herself.
Jumping out of the car she bolted across the pavement. The doorman managed to open it just in time as she hurled into the building and stabbed viciously at the elevator button. When it didn’t open immediately she repeatedly jabbed at it in frustration. “C’mon, c’mon,” she breathed standing on one foot then the other.
The ding of the bell was met with a relieved smile. The doors opened and she dashed in hitting the ‘close door’ button and floor 5 simultaneously. Alone in the elevator she propped herself against a wall swallowing around the lump in her throat and attempted to slow down her breathing and heartbeat. As the doors opened she walked out barely holding control over herself.
At his door she knocked a few times, changing to a rapid tattoo then a pound when he did not answer. Just when she was about to give up and call the superintendent the door eased open.
Natalie stared into the vacant blue eyes the chill flowing up her spine again. His face flushed with heat brightened the blue eyes so much they glowed. Biting her lip she pushed the door open more and slid through. Hayden listlessly stepped back and simply stared.
“Oh, Hayden,” Natalie breathed, grabbing his arm and guiding him into the living room. He dropped onto the couch. Natalie followed him her shaking hand lifting to his forehead already knowing what it would reveal. “You’re burning up!” she gasped as the dry heat penetrated her skin. Pulling the thermometer out she put it to his ear then stared wide-eyed at the read out. “104.7!” Frantically, she dug into the bag for the Tylenol, the bottle flying out of her nerveless fingers and onto the carpet. She scrambled for it and tried to pry it open swearing at the childproof cap when it wouldn’t budge. Grateful when the top popped open she grinned.
Fingers like flames curled around her hands. “Nat,” Hayden’s deep voice slurred.
“Yes?”
“Can you turn the shower on for me?” His eyes blinked slowly. “I’ll take them afterwards. It’s so hot in here!”
Natalie bit her lip and nodded. She ran into the bathroom and turned on the taps squeaking in surprise when she spun and fell into him. Directly behind her he stood fumbling with his shirt. When she tried to help he scowled at her and brushed her hands away. “I can do it,” he mumbled crossly, fingers reaching for the snap on his jeans.
Eyes wide, Natalie’s head turned away. Her heart pounded ferociously in her ears as she scrambled for the safety of the hallway. “I have to run to my apartment for a moment,” she gulped, forcing herself not to look as she heard his jeans hit the floor. “I will be right back. I’m going to leave two Tylenol capsules and a glass of water on the kitchenette counter. If I’m not back by the time you’re finished take two of them and get into bed.” No response. “Ok?”
“Yea,” came the faint reply.
Five minutes later, after a desperate search for his keys, she found them under an end table. Quickly she crossed the hall, dug for her keys and opened the door the 3rd time her shaking fingers attempted to find the keyhole. The dark weave sandals she wore tripped her and she kicked them off making faster time as she scurried around her place. She tore her bedroom apart searching for Ewan’s number, grabbed another book to keep her company while she watched over Hayden, and remembered to take both hers and his sets of keys. Just as she grabbed the door handle the phone rang. Torn between leaving and answering she stopped a moment. Indecision held her frozen until with a whimper she dashed for the phone.
“Hello?” Natalie answered, chewing on her bottom lip.
“Natalie?
“Ewan!” Natalie exhaled, running fingers through her hair.
“Is he all right?”
“No, he’s not all right!” she announced and began to pace the room in agitation. “His fever is 104.7!”
Silence.
“Ewan?”
“That doesn’t sound too good,” he finally replied. “Where is he?”
He’s in the shower in his apartment. I ran over here to check my medicine cabinet for anything that he might need and to grab your cell phone number. If his temp doesn’t go down with the Tylenol, I’m calling you. Leave your cell phone on…Ewan, I’ve got to get back over there!” Her voice rose in panic.
“Ok, ok, calm down and listen to me,” Ewan instructed. He squeezed his eyes shut in concentration and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Listen to me. I’m a father. My wife made sure I know these things. You don’t want him to go over 105.5. If he crosses 105 try a cool washcloth and call an ambulance if it keeps edging higher. That’s in the danger zone. Do you hear me?” This time he was the one met with silence. “I said, ‘do you hear me?’ Natalie?”
“Y…Yes, I heard,” Natalie stammered, wiping her wet eyes.
“The Tylenol should bring it down,” he comforted when he heard her voice shake. “The fever will break.”
“I’ll call you as soon as it does,” she promised.
After saying goodbye she flew out of the apartment and across the hall to his. Four tries later for the keyhole she connected and barreled into the room. Silence bounced off the walls. The shower was off and she drew a thankful breath as she walked over to the kitchenette. What met her there stopped her heart and she groaned. “No, Hayden, no!”
On the counter sat the two Tylenol capsules and the untouched glass of water.
