Prologue
Lance Bass stepped off his horse; taking off his black cowboy hat he ran his fingers through his semi-short blonde hair. He wiped his hand on his jeans and placed the hat back on his head. He had owned Circle J ranch for less than a year. His father, James Bass had given about 2,000 acres of the 200,000-acre ranch he had inherited from his father, for Lance’s twenty-second birthday. The men who worked the ranch all had worked on his fathers, and were still on the same payroll. JC Chasez, Lance’s best friend had moved into the guest room of Lance’s house and helped along with the work.
“Lance?” A voice asked from behind. Lance sighed, he knew that voice and before turning to answer he bit his tongue.
“Hey there Angel, what can I do for you kid?” Angel Herrera clenched her fists, she may only be 17 years old but she wasn’t a kid, even in Lance’s eyes, even if he was 22 years old. Sighing she tried to keep herself from letting her gaze wonder from his light green eyes, to his broad shoulders, lean waist, nice ass…she quickly diverted her thoughts.
“Josh wanted to know if you were coming in or if you were just going to stay out here all night with Thunder…” Angel walked up to the black horse and scratched behind his ears lightly. Lance’s pants tightened and he shook his head. Angel had grown up with him practically. After her father came to his ranch due to the huge difference in size he wanted to spend time with his family. So she relocated with her family to Circle-J.Lance smiled and he couldn’t help but let his gaze wander down Angel’s petite figure. She certainly had grown into herself and she had all the right curves. Her shoulder length curly hair looked soft enough that he'd love to run his fingers through it. Cursing under his breath he sighed and ran his hands down the side of his thighs.
“Yeah, I’ll be in…go ahead and go to the house, I’ve got two more things I need to do.” Angel nodded, but she began to walk towards him. Lance swallowed and tried to keep his composure.
“Lance, I just want you to know that if you need an extra hand around the ranch, I can help you…” She leaned towards him.
“Um, yeah, ok. I might need your help tomorrow.”
“Ok, just let me know.” Angel smiled and leaned up to Lance, kissing him softly on the lips. Lance kissed back softly and as he slowly went to wrap his arm around Angel’s waist he quickly pushed her away.
“Angel, I don’t know what you’re trying to pull, but there is no way in hell I’m going to continue what you just started. I love Sandra, and no kid, is going to change that.” Angel glared up into Lance’s eyes, “Don’t give me that look either. I’m marrying Sandra and there is no way you’re going to change my mind. Good God Angel, you’re 17, I’m too old for you.” Angel sighed as Lance walked away.
“Just wait Lance, one of these days…” She shook her head. It was only a matter of weeks till she was leaving to go to college and her life would be torn away from Lance, breaking her heart.

Six Years Later
Angel stepped off the plane, a little tired from the long flight. She hadn’t been ready for a one-hour flight, much less a two and a half hour flight that was detoured. Sighing she slowly looked around, afraid to see who was coming to pick her up. Her father was sick, and the doctors hadn’t given him very much longer. Suddenly her eyes met her mother’s soft brown ones. Smiling softly, something she hadn’t done a long time. She took her mother into a tight hug. Afraid to let go.
“I’m so glad you’re home…” He mother said, holding onto her tightly.
“Me too Mama, how’s Dad?”
“He’s as good as could be expected. Lance let us move into the main house since he has so many rooms. I mean with only him and Ryan there he had at least three other rooms. He said you were welcome to stay there too, which means you won’t be staying in a hotel.” Angel sighed, Ryan was Lance’s six year old son. The product of Lance and Sandra’s relationship. She had given birth to him a month before she was to be married. A month before she had gotten on the flight to New York, crashed and died.
“Mama, I don’t want to be a burden to Lance, he’s done so much for us as it is.”
“Nonsense, you’re staying at the house and that is that.” Angel rolled her eyes, as she knew there would be no point in arguing with her mother. Once she had her mind set on one thing it stayed that way. As they walked out to the car and Angel put her bag in the trunk she thought about how Lance would react to her being there. She still loved him. Dearly. And she knew that she’d fall in love with Ryan because of all the things her mother had told her about him. Her mom had gone so far as to send Angel pictures of Lance and Ryan. She’d kept every one.
“Mama, how’s Lance doing anyway? I mean, I know its been six years but it’s gotta be hard.”
“He did take it hard, but I think he’s about over it. He understands that he can’t have her back but he is going to take care of that little boy of theirs. He adores that little tike.” Angel smiled, she knew Lance would take care of any child that came along, especially his own. Sighing she looked outside, she really needed to quit thinking about him and she needed to direct her thoughts towards something else, possible her writing career, her physical therapy career or something. Before she could think of anything her mom pulled up into the gateway of the Circle J. What had seemed like ten minutes had in fact been at least thirty. Shaking her head she looked up towards the house and smiled, she had nice memories here as well as bad ones.
“Mama, what happened to Josh?” Angel asked as they got out of the car.
“Oh, honey, JC got married.”
“Married? To who?” Her mother smiled.
“Who do you think?”
“No way, you mean him and Nikki got hitched?” Angel smiled, “I can’t believe it.”
“Well you had better because I beat you to the altar young lady.” Nicole Chasez said from behind Angel. Angel grinned and turned around, quickly she took her friend into a hug.
“God I’ve missed you girl…I’ve been gone way too long.”
“Duh, it’s about time you got your ass back here. Now come on, lets get you in that house. I want to hear everything and besides when you meet Ryan, you’re not going to get one word in. Besides that…I want to know why you left us, particularly me.”
“If he’s anything like Lance I know I won’t. And I’ll let you know, when I’m ready…” Smiling the two of them walked into the house, Nicole immediately taking her towards the room she’d be in. Putting her things down Angel sighed and smiled her hands on her hips.
“So how long have you and Josh been married?”
“A year and a half, and I haven’t regretted any of it. The guys should be getting in for supper in a little bit. Ryan’s out with his daddy and Uncle Josh today. So they are going to be getting back in a little while.” Angel nodded and walked out to the hallway, running into Lance. She quickly put her hands up, lying them on his chest and as she looked up and met his gaze she moved her hands away.
“Oh, sorry Lance…and hello again.”
“Hey kid, and it’s ok.” Angel’s gaze hardened and she looked away from Lance.
“I told you before Lance, I’m not a kid and now I’m twenty-three years old and…” Suddenly a young boy with light blonde hair and green eyes ran up towards Lance and Angel. He quickly began to pull on Lance’s hand.
“Daddy, daddy, daddy! A new person is here and,” Ryan looked up towards Angel and smiled. “Hey, you must be Ryan, I’m Angel…a friend of your dad’s.” The young child looked up at Angel and waved slightly.
“Are you going to be my new mommy?” Angel kept herself from letting her jaw drop and she glanced at Lance who’s eyes had widened.
“Um, I don’t think so sweetie. Why do you want me to be your mommy?” Lance visibly stiffened at her question.
“Well, I don’t gots a mommy and you seemede. Te. That and you’re pretty too…” Angel giggled softly and Lance relaxed a little. It wouldn’t be easy with Angel in the same house; she reminded him too much of what happened in the past. The things he didn’t want to remember, but things he always remembered thanks to Sandra, and their son, Ryan.
“Ok Ryan, no more bugging Angel, you’ll get to bug her tomorrow, now it’s time to eat.” Lance said. Ryan looked up to Lance, a frown apparent on his face.
“Do I hafta wash my hands and face?”
“You know you do buddy, that’s the rule…” Lance replied.
“B-but, it’s not a fun rule.”
“I’ll tell you what Ryan, if you come with me, we’ll wash up and maybe if we’re lucky since it is my first night here your daddy will let you watch Shrek with me.” Angel interrupted. Ryan’s eyes lit up and he grinned.
“Can I daddy? Huh? Huh?”
“I don’t know buddy, you have to get up tomorrow.”
“I always get up though, please, please, please.” Ryan begged.
“Yeah, come on daddy, please…Angel hasn’t seen Shrek yet, so please.” Angel added, kneeling next to Ryan. Ryan turned around completely and faced Angel, his jaw dropped.
“You haven’t seen Shrek? What is wrong with you?” He exclaimed.
“Ryan!” Lance scolded.
“Sorry…” Ryan said.
“It’s ok Ryan, I know it’s hard to believe. But you’ve got to remember, I’m almost as old as your daddy and I have to work.” Angel replied.
“Yeah. Ok, so cantay tay up daddy? Please?” Ryan d agd again.
“Ok, ok, you can stay up tonight, but only because it’s Angel’s first night here.” Lance replied.
“Yes!” Ryan exclaimed, jumping up and down. Angel smiled as she saw Ryan got what he wanted, but as she looked up to Lance, her smile stopped. Lance looked somewhat upset with her for choosing a different side and it looked as if he didn’t want Ryan to stay up but since Angel was, Ryan would get to stay up and watch Shrek with his new friend.
