Mine To Give
Prologue
Blinking tears from hees, es, Natalie strove to keep the car in its lane. Images blurred on her every few seconds and driving was becoming impossible. A sigh fell from her lips and she clamped them together. What a horrible day this turned out to be! Top of the world to rock bottom. It certainly hadn’t started out that way.
“Well, that’s certainly a happy smile,” Ewan drawled, one eyebrow lifting. The wattage behind the smile increased as Natalie bounced over to him. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with a certain boyfriend who arrived this week, would it?” Too happy to care, Natalie beamed and fluttered her eyes at him. “I see that’s a yes,” he answered himself, yanking playfully on a strand of brown hair. Kissing her cheek, he said, “I’m happy to see you so ecstatic. Maybe this guy needs to stay longer if this is what happens.”
“May-be,” Natalie laughed at Ewan as he walked away. Spinning on her heel she danced towards her dressing room. She was so giddy she wanted to hug herself to keep it all in. Matt had flown in five days ago and even though she had worked long hours on the set, she had spent all other waking moments with him. It had been a month since she’d seen him and had forgotten how his kisses made her tingle; his blue eyes race her heart.
“Think you can keep your feet on the ground long enough to do the next scene?” A deep voice teased from behind her, “or should I tie a string around your ankle to at least keep you in the camera’s frame?”
Natalie twirled on her toes and grinned up into the blue eyes twinkling down at her. “Oh, I’ll get my scenes done,” she turned her nose up at him. “You’re not the only single person around here who has a date on a Friday night for a change.”
Hayden chuckled and rolled his eyes. “I have not had that many dates. Michelle and I can’t seem to work out a compatible schedule.”
“Well, maybe one of you should take a few days off,” she suggested, raising a brow.
“I can’t do that.”
“You know what your problem is?” Natalie pointed at him. “You don’t have a romantic bone in your body.”
Hayden pulled a face at her. “Rriiggghhhtt,” came the sarcastic drawl. “Like you would know.”
“Hey,” Natalie held her hands up and backed away, “I call ‘em as I see ‘em.”
The low laugh tickling her ears, Natalie continued onward, the shelter of her dressing room near. Once inside she spun in a circle and clasped her hands. Tonight. She could feel it bubbling inside her belly. Tonight she and Matt would finally become one.
Throwing herself into the chair she inspected the sparkling brown eyes in the mirror. Even she saw the happiness plastered across her face. She was almost drunk with it! Matt had been so patient and sweet. Maybe she shouldn’t have held out for so long, but she hadn’t been sure. Now she knew this was it. He was the one. And tonight…
Michelle tossed her blond hair away from her face as she swirled the plastic spoon in her yogurt. A sly smile hovered on her lips. She knew the guys at the other table were watching her, checking out her long legs encased in sheer stockings, her breasts showcased in the tight sweater. On a normal day she would play them along, but today was special.
“So?” Sara pressed, eyes wide in expectation. “Did you?”
“No,” Michelle admitted nonchalantly, spooning the creamy mixture into her mouth, then slowly pulling the spoon back out. Ok, so she’d tease them just a little. “But I think tonight’s the night I bring him to his knees…or me to mine.” Michelle flashed a naughty grin.
Sara laughed. “Oh, you bad girl!”
“He wants it,” Michelle shrugged. “He’s a guy. All guys want it. No one can beat him when it comes to kissing. Shit! He can make a girl’s eyes cross! I bet he’s the best at everything else, too. Either way, if not, I’ll teach him a few things.”
“He’s got such a great bod,” Sara sighed, propping her chin on her fist. “When he’s on the beach and takes his shirt off…”
“Down girl,” Michelle motioned with the spoon, “he’s mine.”
“I envy you,” Sara sighed again.
“Thanks. I’ve got the perfect outfit to set him off,” Michelle purred, scooping the last spoonful from the bottom of the carton. “A candlelight dinner, no other people around for a change, and…just don’t call me in the morning. I’ll be too tired to talk.”
Sara giggled. “I bet!”
Michelle pushed her chair back. “Let’s go. Lunchtime’s almost over.” Standing, she smoothed down her short skirt with a slow hand. Turning to leave, she sent a sultry smile towards the three men at the next table. One had potential, but…she had bigger fish to catch.
“I told you I’d be on time,” Matt slid an arm around Natalie’s waist and kissed her. One hand slid into his black hair and tightened for a moment before she eased away.
“I can’t believe we finished for the day and the sun’s still up,” Natalie marveled.
As they walked to the car, another car pulled up alongside them. “Natalie Portman?” the young man asked, awe tingeing his voice. “Um, could I have your autograph?”
Not wanting to be held up a moment longer, but not wanting to be rude, Natalie nodded. The young man got out of the car with paper and pen in hand. To sign her name she had to let go of Matt’s hand and missed the sharp eyes noticing the connection and the slight frown at the corners of his mouth.
“There you go,” she handed it back.
“Thanks. I love your work.”
Natalie turned away to head for her car. One step later she violently flew backwards and into the arms of the man. One arm circled around her neck squeezed, cutting precious air from her windpipe. She felt him dragging her backwards and began to struggle.
“Hey!” Matt called out. “Let go of her!”
Something clicked and out of the corner of her eye she saw the blade of a knife point towards Matt. “Stay back!” The young man ordered. “And she won’t get hurt! I just wanna talk to her!” The arm around her throat eased and she gasped for air in greedy snatches.
She knew his car was near and he yanked on the door handle, cursing for allowing it to close in the first place. Fear suddenly took root, awareness of her plight jarring her into action. Loud as she could she screamed and kicked, trying to bite the arm holding her hostage. Frantic, her eyes flew to Matt’s frozen figure.
The door slammed shut and in a blur she fell to the ground, shoved brutally out of the way. In a heap, she cocked her head back. Matt rushed over to her, breaking out of his stasis, and hauled her across the pavement.
Grunts and curses assailed her ears and she fought against Matt’s efforts to take her away. Hayden stood behind the would-be assailant, restraining him and grabbing for the knife. Dazed, she watched Hayden’s head fly back as an elbow rammed into his eye. Grunting in pain he staggered a moment then lunged again. The knife swung at him, ripping through his shirt at the shoulder. Nicked, a small gush of blood darkened the material. Natalie cried out Hayden’s name and whirled on Matt screaming at him to get security. Matt hesitated and she shoved him angrily. He ran.
In horror, Natalie watched the knife slash through the sleeve of Hayden’s shirt, another stream of blood spurting out. Hayden grabbed the man’s wrist with his other hand and twisted, forcing him to drop the weapon. With a foot, Hayden kicked it out of the way, sending it skidding across the parking lot a few feet away from Natalie. She kicked it under a car safely out of reach.
Adrenaline pumping, the assailant freed himself. Hayden stood between him and the car and he kicked out, nailing Hayden’s ribs. Air rushed from Hayden’s lungs, dropping him to his knees. Natalie heard someone scream and realized it was she. Dodging around Hayden, the young man wrenched the door open. Hayden threw himself at the man, dropped him to the ground and straddled him. Two quick punches later the assailant was out cold.
Gasping for air, Hayden’s chest heaved as he struggled to his feet. Eyes searching, he found Natalie and lurched forward a few steps. Natalie rushed at him, wrapping her arms around his waist to hold him steady.
A hand stroked over her hair a moment then lifted her pale face. “Are you all right? Did he hurt you?” The words grated out. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw him dragging you to that car! Are you sure you’re all right?”
“Yes!” Natalie choked out, hiding her face in his chest. “He had a knife! D…didn’t you s…see?” You’re bleeding!”
Hayden wheezed for air. “I saw it. What did you think I was going to do? Let him take you? Not a chance in Hell!”
Natalie burst into tears and Hayden settled his chin on top her head and held her close. “It’s all right, Nat,” he soothed, rocking her in his arms and trying to shut out the burning in his ribs. “You’re safe now.”
“You’re cut,” she managed to sob into his shirt, listening to his heart hammering in time with hers.
“No, no, he barely got me,” he reassured as guards came running. “It’s just superficial.”
The ensuing commotion brought people out of the soundstage buildings to inspect the action. Ewan ran over to Hayden and Natalie, one hand going to Natalie’s back.
“What the hell happened?” He asked, as the guards hauled the man to his feet.
A police car pulled up and they dragged the man towards it. As he passed he called out, “I just wanted to talk to you, Natalie, that’s all! I didn’t mean to scare you! I just w…wanted…”
His voice dropped off and Natalie burrowed closer to Hayden, face hiding in his shirt. An eerie silence held for a few moments and then a policeman shoved the man into the squad car. Murmured voices broke into curious chatter again.
“Did you see the look on his face?” Ewan mused. “Pure fear.”
“I gave him my best Vader glare,” Hayden’s grim retort snagged Ewan’s attention. Hayden’s eyes drilled into the squad car. The young man peered out, caught Hayden’s stare and shrank back against the seat. “He ought to be scared.”
Matt shifted on his feet and stepped forward, placing a hand on each side of Natalie’s waist. “Come on, honey,” he crooned and attempted to ease her away, “let’s go talk to the police and get you home.”
Violently, Natalie shook her head, her face still hidden in Hayden’s chest. Arms tightened around his waist pinching pain into Hayden’s face. Only then did Ewan notice the blood.
“You’re lip’s bleeding,” he pointed out as if Hayden couldn’t already taste it.
“I bit it when he kicked me in the ribs,” Hayden winced in Natalie’s hold.
“Ah,” Ewan nodded. He patted her back. “Natalie, you have to let go of Hayden now.” Natalie shook her head and cried harder tightening her grip. Hayden’s eyes bulged, the wave of pain almost making him pass out, but his grip on her stayed just as firm.
The words sliced through her and jerked her head up. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she searched the face above her. “I’m ok, Nat,” Hayden reassured softly, unaware of the shiner beginning to blacken his eye.
An ambulance made its way through the parking lot. “They need to make sure you’re all right, too, miss,” the policeman said in a calm, controlled voice, “but he’s got to get those cuts looked at.”
Natalie let Matt pull her from Hayden’s comforting arms and enfold her in his. Arms hanging limp at her sides, she watched him go with vacant eyes. He sent her a small encouraging smile then allowed Ewan to lead him away.
A couple hours later Natalie walked out of her dressing room, finished with paramedand and police and was released to go home. Matt had gone to get the car, but she didn’t feel like sitting in the dressing room, waiting. Slow, methodical steps, one foot in front of the other, she paced her way towards the door. Voices drifted from around the corner and she hung back not wanting to see or talk to anyone.
“I wonder where he is?” Michelle’s exasperated voice floated in the air.
“Maybe he’s practicing with Natalie,” another voice jibed.
Michelle huffed. “Oh, don’t be ridiculous! He doesn’t see anything in her! She’s just a skinny, flat-chested Jew from America that he has to put up with for the duration.”
“He told you that?”
“Of course he did!” Michelle snorted. “He’s with me and not her, isn’t he?”
The voices neared and Natalie darted behind a rack of costumes. They passed by and a minute later she sniffled and headed for the door, running. In the shadows down the hall, Hayden frowned, eyes on the quickly retreating figure. Lost in thought, he pivoted and walked away from all sounds of movement.
