Ch1- WHO?
“What?!” Deveraux cried, turning back to her boss. Gore Verbinski looked at her as if to say: " I know you didn’t just speak to me that way." She blushed and gave him an apologetic smile.
“Sorry. Mr. Verbinski, I didn’t mean to yell.” Gore nodded his understanding and acceptance.
“As I said before..... you’ll be getting a roommate!” He reiterated, not looking up from his work.
“I thought you said that apartment was mine.” She said, pacing the length of the office.
“It is, but I have someone in need of a place to stay. I did warn you that this could happen. Had you been sensible enough to heed my warning you wouldn’t have taken the two bedroom apartment...” He said and motioned for her to sit. She flopped into a chair and began to nibble on her nails.
“I know but I never thought it would actually happen. I was under the misconception that only other people you had to house were the actors and that you had all that worked out....” Deveraux mumbled, slouching down in the comfy leather chair. She was already mourning the loss of her privacy. Silently she said goodbye to all that space. Goodbye to her beloved peace, to the midnight snacking and to idiotic dancing. She was really going to miss her freedom.
“We lost them on account to the fact that our actors didn’t come when they said they would. Now we have someone left out in the cold or rather heat.” He said, glancing up from his computer screen to look at her. She was sitting with her arms folded across her chest, her lips forming a pout. He shook his head, her youth was showing. Deveraux watched him pick up the phone as it rang. He was doing her job again. He was such a great boss. Better than anyone could ask for. She honestly never expected things to go so smoothly . She’d thought that since she was out of her element she’d get lonely and frustrated. She thought she’d be gone in a week but luckily that hadn’t been the case.
She still couldn’t believe her uncle had gotten her this job. Three months ago she had bombed out of college apparently math wasn't her strong suit. Go figure! Her uncle had called her up saying his friend needed an assistant as soon as possible. He’d told she’d have to move to Los Angeles and work for a director. Deveraux had never been out of Georgia and being twenty-one, she’d found pretty sad, so she of course took the job without any real thought. Hello chance of a lifetime!
She had reached Los Angeles with what little clothes she had and a few keepsakes. Gore had met her at the airport. They’d hit it off quickly; he made her feel comfortable. He was warm and friendly, he talked to her like he’d known her for years. He’d told her that the movie he was working on was Pirates of the Caribbean II, and she almost hit the floor. Taking her to his office he helped her fill out the paperwork explained about the housing. He asked her if she wanted the two-bedroom apartment. She said yes. What person in their right mind would refuse a swanky two bedroom apartment free of rent? She readily agreed that she would take in any one who didn’t have a place. Two months of freedom and now she was having a stranger dumped on her. She just hoped it wasn’t some psycho. An unlikely event that it was but one can’t be too careful. This was Los Angeles....Gore hung up the phone and smiled at her.
“Are you done?” he asked, studying her sullen face.
“Hold on let me check.” She sat tapping at her temple, with little frown of concentration.. Gore watched Deveraux, waiting for her answer.
“I guess I am.” Deveraux sighed dramatically.
“Good. Your roommate will get here in two days. That was him on the phone.”
Deveraux nodded, then sat up. “Him? It’s a Him? Can I ask who it is?”
“Sure. You have a right to know whom you’ll be living with,” Gore replied, typing away at whatever it was he was doing. Deveraux waited expectantly. When he didn’t say anything she rolled her eyes.
“Mr. Verbinski. Who is it?” she asked.
“Call me Gore.” He stated not looking up from his work. Deveraux groaned in frustration.
“Fine. Gore. Please tell me who it is.” She said, her exasperation evident.
“Orlando Bloom.” He said simply.
“WHO?!” She squealed and shot up from the chair. Gore looked up to find her staring at him with round eyes. He grinned in amusement.
“Orlando Bloom.” He repeated, leaning back in his chair.
“You’re kidding, right? I mean this has to be a joke.” She muttered, beginning to pace again.
“No, it’s not. What’s the matter?” he asked, watching her wear a hole in his floor. Deveraux stopped and looked at him as if he had lost his mind.
“What’s the matter? I have to live with ORLANDO BLOOM! That’s what’s the matter,” She yelled, and threw up her hands.
“What is the problem?” he asked, ignoring the fact that she was screeching at him.
“The problem is that I can’t live with him. I expected a camera person or …... or a make up person. NOT Orlando Bloom.” She said, still gesturing wildly with her arms.
“I still don’t see the problem.” He said, shaking his head.
No he wouldn’t see the problem. He didn’t know about her little crush... okay more like Raging Obsession with Orlando. Deveraux like much of the female population became instantly enthralled with Orlando the moment he’d flashed across the screen in The Lord of the Rings. Now she had always been impressionable, but this went beyond all the others. Deveraux had surrounded her self with pictures and the like. She was really glad she has told herself to leave behind all evidence of her obsession. She had hoped it would put a stop to her fixation on the untouchable actor. So much for that plan! Now She had to live with him! Oh God! She couldn't handle this! What was she going to do?! God couldn’t do this to her!! It wasn’t FAIR!!! She was brought out of her panicked musings by Gore.
“I know you hate getting to know new people but he has no place to go. He’s a really nice guy. You’ll love him I swear..” Gore said, as he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. That’s what she was afraid of. Afraid she’d actually be stupid enough to fall in love with him. She could do that too. All too easily! Then what could she do but suffer? Hmmmm...she could always run.......
“There has to be a hundred hotels in town!” she cried, gripping to the belief that he hadn’t known that and would change his mind about this fiasco.
“I didn’t make you stay in a hotel,” he pointed out.
“No, you didn’t.” she grumbled, slumping.
“So he can stay?” Gore asked.
“I need a cookie.” She sighed, rubbing her head. Gore laughed at her look of defeat and dread.
“I’ll take that as a yes.” Deveraux nodded reluctantly and left his office.
Later that night after she got off work, Deveraux drove home. Stepping out of the elevator she headed down the hall for her door. Once inside she made a beeline for the kitchen . She wanted the cookie she couldn't get earlier. Pulling the bag from her cabinet, she headed out and into the living room. Plopping down on the couch, Raux opened her cookies. She looked about the room and sighed. She didn’t want to share it and especially not with Orlando. Yes, she knew tons of girls would kill for a chance to just to stand twenty yards from him. That had been true for her once too, but now that she had to live with him things looked totally different. Somehow she didn’t think things would go as she imagined. She used to sit and dream of exactly how there first meeting would be. Every one of the fantasies had been the same: he would take one look at her, stare in awe of her beauty and claim his undying love and passion. Then she would go look in the mirror and realize that dreams were crap.
Getting up, Deveraux went to her bedroom. Striding into her bathroom, she took a look in the mirror. Yep, still the same. Deveraux looked at her reflection, shaking her head and sighing. Anyone who stood and stared in awe of her beauty had to be half-blind. She leaned forward to study her face. She had large blue eyes, an average nose, and full lips. She had always though her lips were too big. She puckered them and shook her head.
“Huge,” she mumbled. Standing back she took down her hair. She had always loved her hair; it was the one thing about herself she had no problem with. It was brown, curly and it reached just below her waist. She always kept it so it was away from her neck and face. On rare occasion she’d take her down but only for special instances. Shaking out her hair, she struck a sexy pose.
“God,” She looked at her body and groaned. Deveraux had always been self-conscious about her body, yet somehow she never managed to DO anything about it. At five feet three inches, She was what her mother liked to call voluptuous. Ha, voluptuous her foot. She was fat! Her breasts were big and forever in the way. Nothing but trouble they were. Her hips were wide accompanied by her short legs and her ......well she supposed her stomach wasn’t that big. She turned to her side standing up straight and sucking in her stomach as much as possible. She admired what she could be for a few moments, then released her pent up breath.
“I hate mirrors,” she muttered disgustedly, leaving the bathroom and the evil mirror behind. She went back to the couch and picked up her cookies.
“You’re my only friend, cookie.” She said, studying the tasty treat in her hand.
“Really too bad I have to eat you,” she popped it in her mouth and sighed with pleasure. She turned on the TV and flipped through the channels. Finding that like always there wasn’t a single thing on to keep her even mildly entertained, she got up. Meandering slowly she made her way into the kitchen and put away her cookies. Stopping just outside of the kitchen, she allowed her gaze to sweep over the room.
“I should really clean up huh?” Deveraux asked to herself, taking in the unswept floor and dusty knickknacks.
“Nah. That’s why Gore gave me tomorrow off,” taking one last look at the messy room she cut the lights and went to bed.
