Chapter 1: Still Child
I don’t care
Cause sometimes I said
Sometimes I hear my voice
And it’s been HERE
Silent all these years
She was not mute. Indeed, there were times when she spoke softly. Never did she raise her voice above a whisper. A reaction, a simple response was hard to get--- it was not impossible to receive. It happened though it was as rare as a beautiful clear day in London.
Today was not an easy day. Her older sister did not want to deal with this right now. She adored her little sister, even if she had a severe case of autism. There was a connection between them that was undeniable, but she had a date with her first serious boyfriend, Orlando Bloom. Even his name made her tremble with excitement, it was a great name. He was a terrific guy.
And yet, she knew she could not leave her baby sister alone at home. Joanne stared at the phone and made her mind, she had to call him and cancel. Dialing the number she had memorized by heart, she waited until it rang at least three times before he picked up, “Hello?”
“It’s me, Orli,” she replied.
“Joanne, hey,” he said, pleasantly surprised. He’d been slow to pick up the phone because he’d been getting ready for the big date. It wasn’t everyday he went out with someone as classy and as beautiful as Joanne. There was something about Joanne that he thought was special, different from the feeling he got from other girls. He thought that she might be the one. “So what’s up?”
“I can’t meet you,” she answered bluntly. There was no reason to drag this out, she simply couldn’t go. Before he could asked why, she explained, “My baby sister is having one of her fits, well, it’s more like she’s not speaking and won’t eat and simply won’t react to anything.” She sighed tremendously. “She’s autistic.”
That was something he definitely hadn’t known. For as long as he’d known her, a couple of months, he hadn’t even realized that she had a kid sister. At the back of his mind, he pulled out from the crevice that she had mentioned it to him--- he just hadn’t really connected it to her. It didn’t bother him, that her sister had a problem, hell he’d almost been paralyzed. “I could come over,” he suggested. “If you don’t mind.”
“You don’t mind?” she queried, enthusiasm creeping into her voice. Most people she told that her sister had autism invariably were freaked out, at the least they weren’t as casual as he was about it.
“I don’t mind.”
Yes, he was the right guy. If he didn’t mind her sister being autistic, if he didn’t care about that--- that was unbelievable. “Then come over,” she remarked as if she hadn’t needed to think about it. “I’ll give you the directions. You need to take the...”

The dog was a bit of a poop when it came to any length of distance that had to be traveled by any fashion that wasn’t with the legs. It was all Orli could do to hold Maude so that she didn’t walk over the feet of the poor people that were using the same transportation method. It’d been a godsend when the driver had let him with the dog onto the bus; it hadn’t hurt that he’d tied a huge red bow onto the pooch’s collar either. Call it a temporary gift. A permanent one if Joanne’s sister liked the mutt.
It was with relief that he rang the doorbell and saw Joanne open it. Without much ceremony, he dropped the drooling dog into her shocked arms. “I thought that your sister might like to play with my dog,” he remarked with a wink. “Good afternoon by the way, love.”
The grin on his face was shared by her. “Hi Orli,” she responded, holding the wiggling and drooling dog in her slender arms. “She’s a handful,” she commented as she stroked the dog’s throat which caused the mutt to settle down, enjoying the gentle caresses. “Is she yours?”
Orli nodded, wondering how her hands might feel on his skin. The jolt of desire that went down his spine sent a tingle racing underneath his skin. It nearly caused him to groan aloud, but he wasn’t that out of control yet. That damn dog was far too lucky. If the mutt had been a male, he’d be even more envious. “Yeah, she’s mine.”
“Hmmm... she’s a cute,” she responded. “Well, why don’t you go introduce her to Jilly?” She dumped the pooch back into his ready arms and pointed the way to her sister’s room. “It’s down the hallway. She’s been in there for the entire day. If you can get her to open the door, consider that a victory. If she does open the door for you, I’m going to try to sneak some food in.”
With having said that, Joanne ran to the kitchen to get some food piled onto a plate. She was worried about Jilly. Her little squirt of a sister hadn’t eaten for the entire day, and she had no idea if she had even eaten yesterday or not. After all, she’d only gotten home yesterday and found that her sister was back for a mini-vacation from the her performing arts school.
She shook her head sadly as she walked toward her sister’s room with the plate of food and a glass of water. Their parents pushed her sister far too hard. It was usually a gift to be as talented as her sister was, but in this case--- she didn’t think that being considered a musical genius was helping her sister at all with dealing with her autism. She thought it only made the problem that much worse.
As he neared the room at the end of the hallway, he felt jittery for the reason that he wanted to make a good impression and that his mutt wasn’t helping him by salivating all over him. His lovable Maude was sometimes too much at times. Knocking on the door, he stopped when he heard the music inside stop playing. For some reason that song was familiar to him. He hadn’t the faintest clue why though.
His absentminded memory really failed him in situations like this. Drat it. But he swore that the melody, that the music sounded like he’d heard it somewhere before. Lost in his thoughts, he’d forgotten that he was suppose to be introducing his dog to her sister. Luckily, he didn’t even have to try rapping his knuckles onto the door again. The enthusiastic barking and whining from his mutt caused the door to be opened miraculously.
Standing before him was a becoming girl with sun-kissed blond hair and the palest blue eyes he’d ever seen. Her coloring was similar to Joanne’s, but her features were different--- more fragile. If he’d expected a greeted he was up for disappointment when she stared blankly at him then glancing down at the struggling and eager Maude in his arms.
He figured that she was interested in his dog so he tried to place Maude in her arms, but she backed away like he’d tried to hand her fire. Different reaction for sure since Maude was usually was a magnet for the girls. Cute and cuddly, far too sweet for her own good. “This is Maude,” he said in a soft, coaxing voice like he’d use for a little toddler. “And I’m Orli,” he added. “I’m a friend of your sister’s. I thought that you might like to play with my mutt, and you know how dogs love to play... but maybe you’re too old for that, eh?”
When Joanne had mentioned baby sister, he’d been thinking that she was not above ten. He’d been a little astounded to find her at least in her mid teens. Then again, Joanne herself was 20 and everything was relative. If he’d been expecting a response, he was only going to be disappointed again as she turned around and sat back down on the piano bench.
Poising her fingers over the keys, her fingers struck the keys in an absorbing rhythm that was note for note exactly accurate, but there was something missing in her music--- at least in watching her play. There was no passion in her as she played. That was what was missing; that made something pop into his head that made him remember where he’d heard of her.
It was at a Guildhall music recital. He’d overheard her being lectured by her mentor that her music still lacked life, though it was technically superior to the rest that had performed that night. It was also the same night that he’d bumped into Joanne again. He had mistakenly not connected the Jillian Morley to the Joanne Morley. So that was her sister, he wasn’t sure who had more to live up to... Joanne was an actress and Jillian... well she was a musical protégée from all that he’d heard about her.
“Jilly,” Joanne exclaimed in a cheerful voice as she set the food on Jilly’s desk, “you should eat and stop sitting on the piano like that all the time. I know what mum and da told you about practicing harder, but you shouldn’t neglect having fun and being healthy either! Come on, won’t you eat something?”
He had to admit, he didn’t feel as bad about her ignoring him when she stopped playing the song she’d started and got up from the bench to get away from Joanne. He felt sorry for Joanne and angry at Jillian for treating her caring sister in such a spiteful fashion. Before he had the chance to comment on it, Joanne took his arm and pulled him out of the room.
Unfortunately her quick action and his slow reflexes caused him to let go of Maude who scampered into the room as Joanne closed the door. When Joanne reached to reopen the door, they heard a distinctive click on the door. It seemed that Jillian had been watching them quite closely and had pounced on the opportunity to lock them out once more.
“Maude will cheer her up in no time at all,” he remarked with more confidence than he felt. He’d never wanted to impress a girl more than he wanted to impress Joanne Morley. Maybe it was because of her class, her beauty. Maybe it was just because--- because. “That mutt only knows how to make someone smile. Maude doesn’t know how to give up.”
Joanne sighed heavily and leaned against the wall. “Jilly was always quiet as a child,” she told him. “And extremely gifted, extraordinarily so. Her teachers all raved about her technical proficiency. She plays four instruments you know. Piano, violin, viola, and cello. The problem is that she had no passion behind her playing, no emotions. Her last teacher suggested Guildhall, and she got in easily--- with a full scholarship.”
“That’s impressive,” he commented. “Guildhall is one of the best.”
“Our parents have always been pushy,” she stated with a harsh edge. “They were thrilled when she was proclaimed a musical genius and that’s the worse thing that’s happened to her. The harder they push hehe mhe more withdrawn and detached she becomes. I don’t even think she’s alive anymore. She talks sometimes, but you know--- she’s like not there.”
He nodded. “Like she’s a zombie or such.”
“I’m so worried she’ll try to commit suicide,” Joanne confided in him, her eyes filled with her emotions. “At least at Guildhall she has a roommate with her in her room. I’ve already cleared her room of anything sharp. Even though she doesn’t look like she’s feeling anything, I can’t help but think that the one thing she’s feeling is misery.”
He felt bad for her, but there was nothing anyone could do until her baby sister wanted to be helped--- until Jilly wanted to open up to someone. “I’m sure that when the time is right,” he reassured gently, stroking her back, “ she she’ll open up to you. With such a great big sister like you, she’ll be better in no time.” She rested her head onto his shoulder. “Guildhall is on break, you’ve got time.”
Years go by if I’m stripped of my beauty
And the orange clouds raining in my head
Years go by will I choke on my tears
Till finally there is nothing left
