TITLE: Of All The People
RATING: R for language and the implications at the end
PAIRING: Matt Jay/James Bourne
DISCLAIMER: As far as I know, this never happened. It’s a fictional piece of work.
FEEDBACK: Much desired and appreciated.
SUMMARY: James is not impressed by the latest tabloid story about Matt.
AUTHORS NOTES: The idea for this came about when I was talking to someone on Livejournal about something she’d heard from someone else. Apparently The Sun said that Matt had been on “secret dates” with Jordan, which Lil mentioned that James wouldn’t be very happy about (at least, in the fandom world). So that, combined with my general response of “of all the people – I thought he had more taste than that” sparked this fic.
Of All The People
Matt smiled as he walked into the flat. Overall, it had been a good day – it was sunny, he wasn’t working, and last night’s party had managed to leave him without a hangover. And now, after having spent the morning being outside and successfully avoiding doing anything that could be called something, he was going to get home and find James returned from his visit to his parents. All was good.
Or perhaps not. As Matt opened the door, he was greeted by absolute silence – something virtually unknown in their house. Still, he wasn’t too concerned – he knew Charlie had planned on going to see Camilla, and maybe James had just been held up on the way back. Nothing to worry about.
Nothing to worry about, that was, until Matt spotted familiar trainers lying in the hallway. Very definitely James’, very definitely the ones he’d been wearing when he’d left on Friday. Now Matt was concerned.
Throwing his keys onto the table in the hallway, Matt walked into the living room. No James there. The kitchen and garden were equally James-less, so that only left upstairs.
As he climbed the stairs, Matt felt his insides twist. He just knew that James would be upset with something – for him to be in and not either sat in front of the TV or blasting out the entire house with his music was very unusual. Matt instantly started fearing the worst – obviously, something must have happened over the weekend, something bad enough that James wouldn’t have been together enough to phone and explain.
He walked up to James’ door and knocked. “J? You in there?”
There was no response, but Matt could hear a slight shift from inside the room. He cautiously pushed the door open, dreading what he was about to see.
He had to admit, it wasn’t as bad as he’d been expecting. There were no real signs that James had spent the weekend dealing with some incredible trauma – then again, Matt wasn’t sure that was a good thing either. Still, maybe it was a new incredible trauma – that would make sense.
What he was faced with was James sitting on the bed, tears streaming down his face and an angry glint in his eye. A copy of that day’s Sun lay in a crumpled pile at the corner of the room, and Matt figured that it was the result of James throwing it. That was when Matt really started to worry.
He moved to sit beside his boyfriend. “J, what’s wrong?”
James stood up as soon as Matt sat down. “How could you, Matt? Of all the people…why her?”
Matt blinked. “Okay, did I miss the part of the conversation where you explained exactly what it is I’m supposed to have done?”
“Don’t play the fucking innocent with me, Matt. I know we have to provide them with covers every now and again, but…her? I really thought you had better taste than that.”
Matt stood up, wanting to calm his boyfriend down. “James, please calm down and tell me what this is about? Because really, I haven’t got a clue.”
James stalked over to the newspaper and threw it at Matt. “Have a fucking read.”
Matt tried to shuffle the pages together so that he could read properly. He didn’t need to ask which bit to look at – there was a big red circle drawn around the article in question.
As he read it, he couldn’t help but laugh. The idea was just too ridiculous – of all the people he could have been rumoured with, why had they decided on her? Besides, wasn’t she already taken?
His laughter seemed to rile James even more. “Well I’m glad you find it funny, Matt, because I fucking don’t!”
Matt forced himself to control his hysterics. “Sorry…sorry. It’s just…J, how could you even think there was anything in that? I’ve never even spoken to her.”
“How do I know that? You’ve been effectively left alone over the weekend, how do I know what you’ve been up to?”
Matt’s laughter was cut short at this. “Excuse me?”
“It’s always the same. I leave you for the weekend, I come back and The Sun’s full of these stories about you and various women, and I know we agreed that covers were allowed, but Mattie, her?”
Matt let out a derisive snort. “Right. And The Sun is such a paragon of truth that every story is to be whole-heartedly believed. J, every other gossip magazine has her wittering on about how much she loves her Peter. And you know, good for her, and why the HELL are you implying I can’t be trusted?”
James gave him a challenging look. “Getting defensive, are we?”
“Oh, you’d love that, wouldn’t you? You could go around letting everyone comfort you for what Big Bad Matt did to you. Well blow me, J, cos I’ve got nothing to hide. In fact, almost makes me wonder what it is you have to hide.”
“Don’t fucking well turn this one on me, Matt!” James snapped. “The fact is, someone saw fit to tell the world that you were having secret dates with Jordan – of all the fucking people, Jordan? If you were going to start such a fucked-up rumour about secret dates, you could have made it someone better than her.”
Matt nodded, forcing himself not to lose it completely. He knew it wasn’t going to help if he and James just yelled ach och other until Charlie saw fit to come home and separate them. “So now we come to the crux of the problem. You’ve coped with seeing me with my arms around girls, you’ve even coped with me kissing them, but when it comes to the ‘d’ word, you get twitchy. Well, welcome to the club, J. Not nice having to watch your boyfriend pretend to be madly in love with someone else, is it?”
“So you’re ‘madly in love’ with her now?”
“Don’t twist my fucking words. You know what I meant.”
“So this is, what, you having a jealousy fit?” James turned away from Matt. “It doesn’t suit you.”
“Whereas it just looks perfect on you.” Matt shook his head. “Even if it had been me spreadine rue rumours – which it wasn’t – you ever stop to think why I choose the people I do?”
“Because heaven forbid your laddish image should be forsaken?”
“No. Because of you.” Matt walked over to James and placed a hand on his arm. “You know as well as I do that I could go out and pull the most stunning bird in the room – and that’s not me being arrogant, this is me recognising the hangers-on we get. But I don’t. I wanna get the rumour-mills working, I always go with some rowdy blonde bird who’s more concerned with getting in the paper than with who she’s with.”
“Good for you. Here’s where I ask – why should I care?” James pulled away from Matt, though he did turn and face him. “What’s this got to do with you starting a secret romance with Jordan?”
Matt let out a frustrated sigh. “Was I talking to myself just then? The reason I choose the women I do is so that you don’t get jealous of them. Because I know how I’d feel if I saw you with someone I thought was prettier than me. I know how I feel when I see pictures of you with Kara.”
James blinked at this, almost forgetting to be angry for a moment. “Mattie?”
Matt turned and paced away a litttryitrying to stave off the angry energy by not staying still. “That’s right, J, I’ve admitted it. I hate seeing you with Kara. I hate hearing you tell everyone about how much you love her. So yeah, I go out, I give the tabloids stuff to talk about, but I never choose anyone amazing because I can’t bring myself to choose someone you’d hate as much as I hate Kara.”
James’ anger had now faded completely, overtaken by concern. “Matt…why didn’t you tell me?”
“What was I supposed to say? You worked hard to find that cover, I wasn’t gonna turn around and go ‘No, go and find someone else, she’s better looking than I am’.”
“You really think that?” James hesitantly moved forward. “You really think she’s anything compared to you?”
“No, I was just saying that for the sake of it.”
“Much as I usually love your sarcasm, Matt, now’s not the time.”
Matt sighed. “Okay, so I’m fucked up, I have low self-esteem at times and during those times I end up wondering how you ever wanted me in the first place. I’m not always the confident guy you might think I am. I’m sorry if that’s what you want me to be, but I can’t.”
James placed a cautious hand on Matt’s arm. “Mattie, how long have we known each other? You think in all that time I’ve never noticed the moments when you’d just sit and stare at yourself in my mirror, or disappear into the bathroom for hours on end because some girl who didn’t deserve you anyway had rejected you? I know you can be self-conscious, I just never dreamed you’d get self-conscious over me.”
Matt nodded. “Right…so you’re allowed to yell at me for a bunch of secret dates that never happened, but I’m not allowed to get upset over something that, in the public eye at least, very definitely exists.”
James sighed. “I’m sorry, Matt. I didn’t mean to react so badly. I guess…I just missed you this weekend, more than I usually do, and I know I should have contacted you and told you this, and I’d never expect you to sit in and mope while I’m not here…”
Matt hesitantly reached for James’ hand. “Hell, if I knew that’s what you wanted…”
“I don’t, Matt. I want you to feel that you can go out and have a good time without me – it’s not healthy otherwise.” James gently squeezed Matt’s hand. “Maybe we should work on that communication thing Chaz and Camilla seem to be so good at.”
“You mean the one that means she doesn’t freak every time she sees him within a ten mile radius of another female?” Matt smiled a little. “Maybe we should.”

When Charlie got back that night, the house was quiet. He knew that both of his band-mates were in, because he could see Matt’s keys on the hallway table and James had got back before he’d left to see Camilla. Charlie was confused – even if James and Matt were doing things he’d rather not think about, they would have their music blaring out. So silence wasn’t a good sign.
He instantly headed upstairs, relaxing slightly as he heard voices sounding from James’ room. He relaxed even more when he heard James’ laughter – so at least they weren’t fighting.
He was about to knock on the door when Matt called out, “It’s safe to come in, Chaz.”
Charlie walked into the room. “How’d you know it was me?”
“We heard the front door, so we thought it was either you or we were going to have to be very careful about where we leave our keys in future.” Matt smirked. “Luckily for us, it was you.”
“Matthew? You’re not funny. What gives with you two anyway?” Charlie folded his arms. “I thought I’d gone deaf when I opened the door.”
James smiled. “Where do you want us to start?”
“Let’s just say, you’ve come up to a better scene than I did.” Matt hugged James to him. “But it’s sorted now.”
Charlie raised an eyebrow. “Is this to do with what was in The Sun?”
James blushed a little at this. “Um, yeah…kinda…” He trailed off, not sure how to voice what he wanted to say.
Charlie sighed. “You two are terrible. Anyone who looks at you knows that neither of you is about to desert the other, but you two never see it.”
Matt grinned. “Well, James is a beautiful guy. And flattering as it is to know that other people seem to think I have good taste, I really would rather that they didn’t.”
James giggled at this. “Well, The Sun don’t seem to think you have good taste.”
Matt cocked his head to the side. “True, but then The Sun also have odd concepts of what truth means.”
Charlie smirked. “I had to say, I wasn’t entirely convinced. I mean, of all the people…”
“The price I pay for being such a ‘lad’ I guess.” Matt shrugged. “Though I despair at them thinking I’d have the same taste as Gareth Gates and Peter Andre.”
“I didn’t think taste was an issue when it came to her?” James offered.
“Fair point. She’d do anyone with a Y chromosome and, I’d imagine, a fair few people who don’t.” Matt shook his head. “However will I redeem myself?”
“Come out.”
Matt and Charlie both stared at James. Matt blinked. “See, he looks like my James…”
“I’m serious. We’ll both do it. Together.” James locked eyes with Matt. “I don’t care if we upset the stupid twelve year olds who only like us because they think they’re going to marry us some day. The real fans will accept it.”
Matt swallowed as he gently stroked James’ cheek. “What about the media? You know full well that they’re going to tear us apart over this, and I don’t want them to have a field day with something that means this much to me.”
“Fuck the media.”
Matt and James looked up as one at Charlie’s intervention. Matt looked confused. “What?”
“You heard me. Fuck the media. They’re going to try and break us no matter what we do, so we may as well be honest with them.”
“Easier said than done,” Matt returned. “What about Kara?”
“I’ll tell everyone she was a cover. Matt, I don’t care anymore. I don’t want us to have to hide something that’s so important to us.” James gave his boyfriend a pleading look. “The important people all know, so it’s not like we’re going to the media before them.”
Matt sighed. “You’re right, as usual.” He gently kissed his boyfriend. “If it’s what you really want, I’ll do it.”
James smiled. “Thanks, Mattie.”
Charlie stood up from where he had been leaning against the doorframe. “So, now that’s been sorted, anyone for pizza?”
Matt and James both stood up at this. Matt moved to push Charlie out of the room. “Why are you asking us when you should be phoning already?”
Charlie swatted Matt away from him. “Or, you know, ‘yes’ would have worked just as well. I wasn’t even holding out for the ‘please’.”
“I don’t care. I haven’t eaten since I got back, and I’m willing to bet that J hasn’t either.”
“That’s not my fault, Matt.” Even as he said this, Charlie was making his way down the stairs.
James laughed as he wrapped his arms around Matt’s waist. “Poor Charlie. How does he put up with us?”
“Because we’re two of the best looking, funniest and most charming guys he’s ever met?” Matt grinned. “And before you ask, you come in first.”
“That’s something we’re going to have to agree to disagree on.” James kissed Matt softly before saying, “Come on. Before Charlie thinks he can get away with only ordering for himself.” The last part was spoken in a raised voice.
From downstairs, they heard Charlie call back, “Chance would be a fine thing!”
Matt smirked. “Can’t say he doesn’t have a point. However, since I am inclined to take your side in…oh, everything, we’d better go downstairs.”
James smiled as he placed a hand on Matt’s ass, ‘guiding’ his boyfriend down the stairs. “Is it worth me asking how you knew I hadn’t eaten?”
“Let’s think, how about because it’s you, and I know what you’re like when you’re being all insecure.” Matt placed a brief kiss on James’ shoulder. “That’s why I have this inbuilt need to look after you before you collapse on me.”
“It’s not that bad!” James protested. “But thank you.”
Charlie rolled his eyes as he hung up the phone, just as Matt and James reached the bottom of the stairs. “If I’d known you were in this sort of mood, I’d have stayed at Camilla’s.”
“We were expecting you to anyway,” Matt retorted. “It’s not our fault you’ve ruined our plans to shag each other in every room of the house.”
Charlie gave Matt a look of disgust. “That was something I never needed to hear.”
James plastered an innocent look onto his face. “We wouldn’t have used your room.”
“Strangely, James, that doesn’t make it any better.” Charlie shook his head as he walked to the kitchen. “You two take your groping into the living room. I’m going to the kitchen to make tea and ignore the images that are doubtless going to haunt me now.”
Matt smirked as he licked James’ neck, eyes fixed on Charlie as he slid his hand down towards his boyfriend’s crotch. “Well if you ever want to join in…”
Charlie all but ran to the kitchen as James let out a soft moan, calling without looking back, “On second thoughts, I’ll call for you to come down when the pizza gets here.”
James smiled as he kissed Matt. “That work for you?”
Matt had already taken James’ hand and was leading him up the stairs. “I haven’t seen you all weekend, and we’ve argued. I’d say some catch-up, make-up sex was well overdue.”
James shook his head, content for Matt to lead him. “Is that all you ever think about?”
“No!” Matt pretended to look indignant. “It just happens to be all I’m thinking about right now.”
James was about to reply when Matt kissed him hungrily, unable to hide his sudden lust. All James could do was submit as Matt pushed him into his bedroom.
As they separated for air, James teased, “I hope this isn’t going to make you late for your secret date.”
Matt smirked. “Heaven forbid. Whoever would she do if I was late?”
James shook his head. “Jordan…”
Matt cut off any further sentence with another kiss, gently forcing James to lie on the bed. As he moved to straddle his boyfriend, he finished James sentence for him. “Of all the people…”
