Back and forth the feet paced the length of the hotel suite. At this pace tlushlush carpet would be worn and threadbare in a day. Jamming his clenched fists into his pockets to keep from strangling the composed young woman sitting on the couch, he mentally counted to ten…again.
“Why are you getting so worked up?” Natalie’s laughing brown eyes sparkled up at Hayden, amusement at his bad temper lighting her delicate features
“Two days ago I asked you to NOT refer to me as a ‘kid’ in interviews, Natalie!” Hayden whirled around, disbelief raising his eyebrows. “You said, and I quote,” he continued, now mimicking a high voice, ‘I’m sorry, Hayden. I didn’t know it would bother you. I didn’t even realize I was doing it. I’ll be more careful.’” His mouth thinned in volatile frustration. “And then, not only did you do it yesterday, you just did it again!”
Natalie brushed an imaginary thread off her linen, caramel colored slacks. Interviews were not a particular favorite of hers, but they were a necessary evil in her profession and she tried to be as pleasant to the journalists as possible. The couple of interviews the two had given today had seemed just that, pleasant. Confusion puckered her forehead as he marched to the door to check again for word the car that would whisk them to the studios had arrived. The tense set of Hayden’s shoulders and the stiff legged gait shouted his agitation, but for the life of her, Natalie could not see what the big deal was. Ok, so he’s a couple of months older than me, she conceded to herself as he paced over to the window, but she didn’t mean to nick his pride. Men, Natalie decided haughtily as she eyed his back, can be such babies.
“Look…Hayden,” she rose from the couch and walked over to the window to stand beside him. “I didn’t know it would bother you that much. I’m just used to doing thatthat’s all.” Grinning, she added teasingly, “ It’s not like I don’t know you’re a whole two months older than me.”
The hope that she could tease this out of character mood from him died a quick death with one lift of his eyebrow, his blue eyes frosty with offense.
“Sarcastic AND patronizing,” Hayden muttered as one of George Lucas’ assistants opened the hotel suite’s door.
Mouth flapping open like a hooked fish Natalie stared dumbfounded at Hayden. “I wasn’t…”
“Yes. You were. You do it to me all the time.” Hayden pivoted from her and pinned a smile to his face for Shirley.
“The car’s here,” the woman clapped her hands together in satisfaction. “Interviews are over and we can get you two to the studio for more of ‘same, only better.’”
Hayden forced a chuckle at the well-known joke of George’s directing. George always took it with his ever-present good humor and the cast and crew of every Star Wars movie loved to lighten the set with impressions of him. Manners automatic, Hayden gestured towards the door. “After you.” He stepped back and allowed the women to precede him, refusing to meet the puzzled eyes peering up at him as Natalie sidled passed him.
The afternoon crawled. Except for dialogue, Hayden never spoke to Natalie. Natalie frowned at the cold shoulder. Always he could be counted on to make her laugh with a comment or gesture. Today he didn’t even look at her. The desire to stamp her foot crossed her mind, but she squelched it and rolled her eyes. He was being a big baby. She would have never believed it if she hadn’t seen it herself. But it also bothered her. Ignored by Hayden. It was a new feeling and she didn’t like it one bit.
“Hayden Christensen!” Natalie called after him as she left the set and saw him already in street clothes and heading for the door. “You stop right there!” The long legs halted and he twisted, fixing her with the first look of the afternoon. Natalie shivered at the vacant expression. “I want to talk to you.” She looked down at her costume. “I have to change. I’ll be right back. Don’t you dare move!”
The expression never changed but neither did he move. Natalie chalked it up as a positive sign and head high walked as calmly as she could to her dressing room. Hayden watched the petite figure stroll regally away and rolled his eyes as he turned away. Without a backward glance he left the building.
It started out as a polite knock on his hotel door. He ignored it and continued to sort through his clothes, trying to figure out what he was wearing after his shower. When he refused to answer the door, the knocking became insistent. Then pounding. Then shouting accompanied the banging. He could not believe she was being so persistent. But then, he mused, she was used to always getting her way. Sighing, he closed his eyes against the inevitable and went to the door.
Natalie stormed into Hayden’s room the moment the door opened and whirled on him as he closed it. Crossing her arms, she began tapping her foot, waiting for him to speak. Hayden strolled back to the dresser and resumed his sorting.
“How can you be such a baby?” Natalie fumed as he continued to ignore her. “I can NOT believe you didn’t wait for me! You are being ridiculous!”
Hayden held a shirt up to his chest and checked how it looked on him in the mirror.
“Hayden!” Natalie stamped the foot she had restrained earlier. “I told you it was an accident! I didn’t mean to do it! This is crazy!”
Hayden selected underwear and socks and laid them at the foot of the bed with the shirt and his favorite jeans. Straightening, he found Natalie blocking his way.
“Excuse me,” he cupped her shoulders and forced her gently backwards until he could move around her. “I have a shower to take.” And with that, he ambled into the bathroom and closed the door behind him. Moments later water gushed from the shower deafening him to any noise beyond the bathroom door.
Blinking, Natalie stared at the door, mouth gaping. That’s it? He was going to leave it like this? How dare he ignore her! Wildly, she looked around the room hoping for some sign as to why he was acting so strangely. Nothing. In her whole life no one had ever treated her with such disdain. Ever! Natalie’s mouth clamped into a thin line of determination. Well, it wasn’t going to start today, either. She marched to the bathroom door grabbing the handle, one fist rising to smack the door until he was forced to open it. As her hand touched the handle, the door creaked a bit. Stunned she stared at her hand on the knob. Hayden may have closed and locked the door, but the door hadn’t clicked into place. A nasty, smug smile stretched her lips.
“Ok, Mr. Christensen,” she murmured, the light of battle flaring in her eyes, “you can run, but you can’t hide.” She pushed the door open and marched onto the battlefield.
