Chapter One
Natalie rolled over in the enormous bed, shoving her face into the fat pillow, and groaned. Distantly, she heard the director yell cut…again…and cursed herself for another wooden performance. The heat of a kind hand touched her bare back and stroked it with soothing brushes. A tiny smile touched her lips. Her partner in crime understood, even if he was the only one capable of doing so.
The director strolled across the set, muttering, dragging his hands through his scruffy hair in endless consternation. If there were going to be any problems on this movie, THIS was not one he had anticipated! How could she not relax and just do the scene? It befuddled him to no end. After all, these two had such great chemistry!
“That’s it for today, people!” He boomed the announcement. Instead of cheers, the crew mumbled incoherently and drifted away like mist in the sunlight. No one wanted to be on the receiving end of whatever fit he was going to throw this time. Once they were almost alone he turned to the young man sitting up in the bed who continued to pat Natalie’s back in calming reassurance.
“You know what I’m going to say,” the director breathed, his voice trembling with barely restrained violence. “You KNOW what I’m going to say!”
“I know,” Hayden nodded, sighing, continuing to touch Natalie’s back. “We’ve wasted two days of filming trying to get this scene completed.”
“Right!” the director wrung his hands. “The studio bigwigs are going to get wind of the sudden slowing and be down here cutting us to the bone! We MUST get this done!”
Hayden nodded again, and cast Natalie’s shivering form a glance. The director tipped his head and spoke to the air. “I am not having a problem with your performance, Hayden, so don’t think I’m lashing out at you. You’re doing a remarkable job, under the circumstances…” Hayden felt Natalie cringe at the barb. “But, we cannot let this go on any longer. If Natalie can’t do the bedroom scene then I will be forced to replace her.”
As soon as the words left the director’s mouth, Natalie shot over onto her back, hauling the sheets tightly to her chest. She sat up and gaped at the director, mute with astonishment.
“You can’t be serious!” Hayden exclaimed, his eyes wide with horror at the thought. “She’s done a superb job so far!”
“No one is arguing that,” the director sat gingerly on the edge of the bed, fixing Natalie with his narrowed eyes. “However, maybe this movie is just a little too adult for you, Natalie. Maybe you’re not ready for this kind of scene.”
“I am ready for this!” Natalie insisted, brushing the hair out of her eyes with an impatient swipe. “You don’t know what I went through to get this part! I practically crawled across broken glass to win it!”
“I know,” the director agreed. “You and Hayden should be slam dunking this movie with your onscreen chemistry. As comfortable as you are with each other, it should be no big deal. You should be breezing through this with all the intensity the scene calls for! You’re a Meg Ryan to his Tom Hanks!” Natalie bit her lip, her eyes shifting away in discomfort. “Now that I think about that, maybe you are so comfortable with him that you are uncomfortable doing a scene making love with him.”
It stung. Natalie’s cheeks reddened so deeply that the two men couldn’t help but notice. Hayden knew that was why she was having such a problem and the fact that her boyfriend was on location with her wasn’t helping. Ever since he had arrived she had been excessively jumpy. If Hayden so much as poked her to ask a question she recoiled as if he had done something inappropriate. Every time he thought of it he felt a quiver of anger arrow up inside. After all, he’d known her a lot longer than that idiot. The last thing she should be is worried about what the guy would think. They were actors, for crying out loud!
Maybe he’s jealous, Hayden thought to himself, the idea actually delighting him when it shouldn’t. Maybe he’s giving her a hard time about this bedroom scene and me.
Hayden followed that line of thought; unwinding it and examining it, letting the conversation between the director and Natalie fade away. To be honest, he had been looking forward to this scene throughout the filming. From the time they cast Natalie he had anticipated the role reversal of him taking control for a change. Natalie could be very bossy and while he had simply sat back in the past and let her, he was getting a bit sick of it. Now that he had her lovely body in a bed and knowing that that lovely body was supposed to be under him, wrapping its limbs around his, kissing him back with mindless pleasure, he found it deflating and humiliating that she kept floundering and blowing the scene. The moment she had to let him move over her topless body she froze and the annoyance that he first experienced now slowly built into a burning rage. It was becoming personal. There had to be some way of blasting her out of this ridiculous fear.
“What if I work with her over the weekend?” Hayden suggested, blue eyes all innocent. “We’ll work on it all weekend and if by Monday she still can’t do the scene, well, then…”
The words trailed off and Natalie finished them in her mind, a nausea roiling in her stomach. If she didn’t nail this scene come Monday then she would be off the picture. The thought of what would happen when word got out that she couldn’t act like an adult and complete an intimate scene would seriously quell her career! No one would cast her after this, at least not for a long time. She could not afford to let that happen. If only she didn’t have to do this scene with Hayden! Her mouth turned down at the thought she assigned him blame even though she knew better.
“Fine,” the director nodded, standing up to leave. “Take this weekend and work on it. If you can do the scene on Monday then we can move on. If not,” he pointed a finger at Natalie, “I will be left with no choice and go with my second pick.” Natalie’s eyes rounded at the thought of his second choice. “She is by no means up to your standard, Natalie, but she is more than willing to climb between the sheets with Hayden.” And with that remark, he walked off the set, leaving the two actors still in the bed.
Hayden flopped back down on the bed, his hands linking behind his head. Staring up at the rigging he mulled over the director’s words. Next to him, Natalie shivered and stared at him, whether in outrage or fear he wasn’t sure.
“If you screw this up so that I have to climb in this bed with that groping bitch I will never forgive you,” the bitter words stung her ears. Turning his head he met her stunned eyes. “I mean it. I’m tired of being understanding. Ever since that…boyfriend…” the word spat out of him, “got here you’ve been flubbing up constantly. If he can’t handle me and you in this scene then send him packing, Natalie!”
Natalie’s nose turned up and she looked down at him, a haughty light flaring in her brown eyes. “He is not the problem!” She denied, barely holding her temper. “You are the problem! I can’t do this! I can’t act like we are all hot for each other!”
Hayden sat up towering over her, the calm blue of his eyes now stormy and threatening. “Yes, you can. And you will. You are coming over to my apartment tomorrow and Sunday and we are going to work this out until you can do this scene convincingly!”
Natalie’s eyes skittered away, her fingers anxiously plucking at the sheet. “Could it be later tomorrow? I…have plans. We’re supposed to go to…”
“I don’t give a DAMN what you and he are ‘supposed’ to do!” Hayden heard himself heave at her, the pressure in his head relieving a bit with his outburst of anger. “HE is NOT going to be with you tomorrow. I am! Got that?”
“You can’t tell me what…”
“Oh, I’m telling you what you will do all right,” Hayden’s face loomed closer until Natalie could barely stare into his eyes, everything turning fuzzy. “If he has a problem with it tell him to come see me and I’ll set him straight. I am willing to help you not lose your job and I certainly don’t want to have to fend off Miss Wandering Hands of the 21st Century, either. The least you could do is be appreciative of my efforts.”
Bewildered by his outburst, Natalie gaped. Never had Hayden ever raised his voice to her or told her off. Now that she thought about it, she had always taken control. At least off camera. Unable to find her voice, she blinked.
“This comes first, Nat,” Hayden slid out of bed, his skin colored leggings giving the impression of him being naked. Natalie couldn’t help it. Her eyes dropped and stared, the outline of his body impossible to ignore. Hayden snorted at her gaze, wrenching her eyes back to his, her cheeks burning again. “Yeah, it happens sometimes when I get pissed.” Natalie tried to speak but her vocal chords were paralyzed. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Be at my place by noon. That gives you all morning with Mr. Wonderful.”
Natalie watched Hayden stalk away highly aware of how perfect he looked from behind. There was a panther’s grace about him when he walked. He carried himself straight, a proud lift to his head, the lights glinting gold off his thick, wavy hair. Hair that she had just recently run her fingers through before she had once again ruined the scene. The kissing had never bothered her before, she reminded herself, chewing on her lower lip. They had kissed lots of times…but never this passionately. Every time his tongue touched her lips with the barest of brushes she stilled in distress. Upset, she reached for the robe and slithered into it before climbing out of the bed. A deep sigh swelled her chest. Well, tomorrow was going to be shot and her boyfriend was not going to like it. He barely tolerated Hayden as it was! For some reason beyond her reach, he did not like Hayden. He felt intimidated by him and the easy friendship the two actors shared. Over and over she reassured him, but still he seemed to not trust Hayden.
Nervously, she laughed, running a hand through her hair as she walked towards her dressing room. Hayden couldn’t intimidate a flea! As quickly as the laugh bubbled up, it died. If he couldn’t so much as intimidate a flea, then why was she so worked up about working on this scene with him all weekend long?
