"Blissful Beginnings"
//Gawd! Would you look at *that*!//thought Darren, as his eyes surreptiously scanned the younger of the two dark-blonde brothers of the group that were about to audition him. "I could get really get into *that*...". His eyes involuntarily drifted downward, as he admired the towering sleekness of the younger brother. But his guitar almost hid certain of his assets from Darren's view.
//How annoying...c'mon sweetheart, just move to the side a little...oh yes...oh, nice...
Very nice.//
"Em, 'Darren' is it?" Oliver signalled him over to the mike. "Can
you do a Kazzan cover? Or have you got something?"
Darren turned his train of vision swiftly away from the younger brother. Time to focus on what he was there for in the first place.
"I didn't know what stuff you guys knew, so I'm just going to sing a song that doesn't really need any instrument backup..." he coughed into his hand to clear his throat and gripped his upper arm with his hand, nervously.
"You don't know any -" exclaimed Oliver complainingly, impatiently.
It had been a long afternoon.
"I'll sing *anything*," Darren interrupted. "That is, if you decide I'm in..." he corrected himself.
Daniel looked at him more appraisingly now. He was sick of listening to all these guys who had showed up, obviously wanting a job as a bassist or rhythm guitarist, but applying to be a singer because they wanted to be in a working band when it was obvious they couldn't sing worth a dime! Talking about how much they were into Led Zeppelin, or whatever the hell it was they were into. This was the first guy who had shown any interest in adapting to what *they * - their band - wanted. And after all, it was *they* who had the contract, right? The young wannabes that had showed up wet behind the ears, were so full of themselves. Confidence was good. But to a point.
Daniel watched closely as Darren began to sing some weird song about wanting to break out of being on the bad side of town...funny really, for a college-looking boy...probably some little nancy-boy, teacher's pet who just thought it was all a cute game: For Daniel this was no game: he definitely wanted to move out of bullshit jobs onto something better. Both brothers cut him off halfway through.
"Okay, Dar...that's good, thanks..."
"You can call me "Dozer"...that's what my friends call me..." Darren felt skeptical about their approval, but sensed an aura of possibility from the younger brother...
//"Dozer"? He looks more like a "Spritzer" with that poofy blonde hair...// though Oliver as he now scrutinized him closely for some evidence of "Dozer"-like qualities.
//"Dozer"? He sounds more like "Tinkerbell" trying to growl...// thought Dan. //But he's got a clear, loud voice. And he's not afraid to look you in the eye.//
"We'll call you and let you know..." Dan said, as an awkward silence had begun to stretch between them.
"I'm at Woody's tomorrow night, if you need to get a hold of me..."
Darren offered coolly.
"Heh! Woody’s? We go there all the time..." said Daniel with a smile. “So you hang out there, too?"
"I work there..." replied Darren, somewhat subdued.
"Oh wow...we heard about that robbery!" interjected Remmie, the group's drummer. "Were *you* there that day?"
"Yehr...they stuck a gun in my face..." he answered. The robbery had been written up in the Courier-Mail.
"Shit, that must have pissed you off!" replied Oliver.
Darren sensed that Oliver was testing his macho quotient. Now was not the time to admit how terrified he had felt.
"I'd like to take that pile of *dungheap*, shove a shotgun up his arse and blast the shit right out of him until it's plastered on the walls like vegemite!" he hissed loudly, projecting a lot of vengeful hate-filled emotion.
Oli was silently impressed with the degree of venom in his reply.
//What the fuck?// Daniel suddenly spun himself around as he realized what a visceral reaction he had had to Darren's words. He had the starts of a hard-on, and although probably not *that* noticeable, he sensed immediately that it was imperative that Oli not catch on. Daniel had never reacted like that to a man before. Ever.
He began to perspire, and pinched his t-shirt away from himself. //Probably just a one-off...Christ...//
"Let me know," Darren said, shaking Oliver's hand firmly, and then walking over to Daniel to extend his hand. As Daniel looked straight into Darren's face, noticing his soft lips, he was stunned by the young man's rough, powerful grip on his hand Having bartended and lifted cases of alcohol, he had strong, muscular hands himself. But he was no match for Darren, and he knew it.
"You've got a mean handshake, mate!" Daniel felt compelled to comment
aloud.
"Used to haul potatoes, before Woody's," Darren offered in the way of a small apology. The exchange from both of them was largely a silent collusion for Oliver's benefit. Both of them sensed his prejudice for a having a hot-blooded, gritty group that did not take on "uni wusses". Both Daniel and Darren had somehow now bonded in a language that went beyond words. Both sensed too, they had not seen the last of each other by a long shot.
~ ~ ~
"Well?" Daniel asked Oliver.
"I don't know...I thought the whole lot were a bunch of crap. I wouldn't trust any of them in a recording contract situation..."
"I'd trust Dozer..." offered Daniel.
"Oh come on, Dan! The guy sings BROADWAY, for Chrissakes!"
"He said he'd sing `anything' - did we get that attitude from those others? No. I bet if we were under pressure, he'd hang in...he obviously wants to get ahead..."
"Okay, tell you what...we'll get him in for a couple of rehearsals and if he does anything that looks bad, *you're* the one that fires him!"
"Okay...you're on..."
"And he has to get rid of that ridiculous haircut - tell him to go darker or something, too..."
"’kay..." Daniel was not looking forward to telling Darren he had to change his hair, but he sensed that Darren might go along with it

Daniel went to Woody's the following evening. Sure enough, there was "Dozer" behind the counter, pulling out some rolls of price stickers. Darren spotted him immediately.
"Hey, Daniel! You could have phoned!"
"I thought I'd come down...I like to go through the clearance sales bin once in awhile..."
"Oh yehr...just tell me what you want...I'll `deep-discount' it..."
"I don't want to get you into trouble..."
"No worries, mate! After that gun in my face, help for the evening shifts isn't applying here in droves...I can make "mistakes" once in awhile..." he smiled.
Dan laughed. Dozer was obviously a wily guy - someone Dan could easily relate to.
"Well thanks, Dozer...'ppreciate it...I don't like to blow my cash on full price. We're not bringing in the royalities, yet. But I'll get to the point. You're `in'...but on certain conditions."
"I'm listening..." answered Darren, folding his hands on the counter like a cooperative school child. Daniel felt something inside himself twitch that he could not explain. He looked deeply into Darren's innocent-looking face and then found himself staring into his not-quite-so-guileness blue eyes.
//They're eyes of *sin*...// he shuddered. //Speaking right down into that part of me that wants to...fuck *slowly* and very hard!//
He realized he had stopped breathing and forced himself to inhale before continuing. "Our band has a certain stage image...contemporary style..."
"Change my haircut?" he guessed.
"And maybe...the color - go darker..." answered Daniel firmly.
"What about you?" he replied.
"Me?"
"You'd look better with lighter blonde...so you and your brother are more..."
"More...?" Daniel looked at him somewhat challengingly.
"Interestingly different..." said Darren, with an edge of innuendo and small smile of amusement, unashamedly flirting.
"*Interestingly* different"?" Daniel analyzed. //What am I getting myself into, here?// "I think Oli just had you in mind, Dozer..."
"Now, why did I just *know* that?" Darren grinned owlishly. He came around the counter and gave Daniel a friendly, warm clap on the shoulder.
Daniel breathed deeply again and laughed nervously. Darren was not offended or objecting to what he asked of him, in fact, he seemed pleased.
//What it is about him?...that gets my heart beating so fast?...//
~ ~ ~
"Gazing at your miserable self in front of the mirror again?" Oliver wisecracked.
"Like you don't?" snorted Daniel.
Oliver began to walk away and then he remembered where Daniel had been earlier that evening. "So, he's gonna change his hair...?"
"Yehr..." Daniel answered, almost indifferently, clearly more interested in his own at that moment. "Wonder what I'd look like in pale blonde hair?"
"A poofter! What else?"
"You're just *jealouth-th*!" wisecracked Daniel patting his hair with an affected lisp, playfully baiting Oli's sarcastic sense of humour.
"Oi, what next? Daniel "G-String" Jones playing among a bleedin' gaggle of fruits at the Sydney Mardi Gras!??" Oli wisecracked back, describing the most offensive image his mind could muster.
Daniel thrust his hips out a couple of times. "I could wind `em up good...think of the all the free drinks!!..."
"Shall I tell your old boss that, then?"
"We'd probably see some good money, sooner..." he replied with a snap.
"We're going to make some decent money, soon - if I have to do the singing m'self , don't you worry!"
"Thank God that's one worry we *don't* have anymore!!"
"Want me to gum up your guitar strings, baby bro?" came a sinister sounding comeback.
"Sod off...you don't touch my guitar!..." Daniel growled.

Darren arrived for rehearsal ten minutes early. His hair was the exact same shade of medium, dark-brown as the drummer's. Daniel took him aside. "I think he meant darker than that!" he
whispered.
"I'll take care of it for next time..." Darren assured him, agreeably. Rehearsal went surprisingly well...Darren was able to sing the melodies in no time, despite not knowing the lyrics very well, singing monosyllables instead, almost warbling. It made him sound like a songbird. Oliver was not impressed, however, a couple of girls had come to watch them who were obviously very impressed by Darren's performance. Darren befriended them quickly.
"Well at least he doesn't sound so nervous this time..." commented Oliver when Darren was momentarily out of earshot.
"I think he's doing good, actually," Dan replied. He had been watching Darren as much as he had been listening to him. He had an unusual way to him. He seemed so masculine in certain ways. So feminine in others. An unusual fellow, to say the least. Yet obviously very ambitious and determined. He didn’t seem at all averse to redoing things, until they got the right sound. No signs of impatience or irritability. It had been awhile since they had someone who had something more happening, than a short attention span.
"I'll need a copy of those lyrics before the weekend" Darren said, when they finally wound it up around midnight.
"We don't write them down..." Dan said.
"What??" replied a surprised Darren.
"We just do chord charts...but you can play them at work and figure them out for yourself, right?"
"Yehr, okay...I'll write them down," he answered cooperatively. "And
make copies. And then you'll *all* have them!"
"Don't need them..." Daniel replied.
"Yehr...you do!" replied Darren insistently.
Daniel shrugged. It made no difference to him. "Okay. If it'll make you feel better..."
//Jeesh! For a beautiful babe with green eyes, he can be a little dense...// thought Darren. He stared into them again for a moment and saw a look that could only be described as feral. //Maybe his mind's on other things...// he mused with some excitement. He saw Daniel watching his throat intently. //Shirt button undone, right?...yep...you’re MINE, green eyes...take a good, long look baby! Hope you like what you see 'cause I know *I* sure like what I see!! Yes, take a good long look...// Darren felt a pleasurable tingle pass through him body, seeing that Daniel had not averted his gaze.
~ ~ ~
Dan’s luminous, green eyes kept flashing through his mind, all along his long walk home after he left rehearsal. //God, I so *hope* he's the type that does more than just look!...// he prayed to himself privately. Arriving home, he took the stairs two at a time to his room. Rummaging through his drawer, he found a CD that contained one of the band cuts and popped it out its jacket. He went and shut his door, then jammed a door jamb under it so no one could interrupt him. He sat back down on the bed, but instead of putting the CD into the player, he changed his mind and set it aside. He stroked his hand downward under his balls and gently massaged upward. Flipping his pant button open, he began sliding his other hand down underneath the denim fabric. Closing his eyes, he found himself once again looking into those seductive green, eyes. He began to moan softly and allow himself to fall back onto the bed. Rolling slowly over onto his side with his back to the door, he pumped himself into a nirvana-like climax.

Four months later:
"I'm just sick of this garbage!" said Darren.
"We're making money, Doze!" protested Daniel. “I don’t understand what you’re on about...”
Darren was unhappy with the direction the band was taking. More to the point - not taking. And Daniel had turned out to be one of those look-but-don't-touch homophobes that Darren had feared he might be. Not that Darren had ever really come onto him in a big way after being privy to his homophobe jokes and barbs. The innuendoes had basically put up “the red light” for him. Most importantly, he was frustrated with their lack of musical progress.
"We're never going to do anything special as long as we're doing other people's crap and these songs are crap - that's why we're not getting the better bookings. That's why we're playing these dives, getting crap wages, and sometimes not even getting paid, period."
"Oliver knows what he's doing. He's been doing this a lot longer than us, Darren..." Daniel assured him, hesitantly.
"He may have more experience, but no, he doesn't know, Daniel. I know he's your brother, but I know you see we're no closer to doing a record deal than when we started. You don't cut a record doing other people's material – it’s just common sense!"
"Well, listen. Maybe if we sit down with Oliver when he's in a good frame of mind..."
"You know it won't work...how many times has he said, "Yehr, but we've got to walk before we can run...I know we can move faster than this, Daniel...you and I are the only ones here with any real ambition ...the rest are just too scared, or content with the rut we're in!"
"Nobody's an overnight success, Darren," replied Daniel pragmatically.
"That's not true...some people are stars before they're eighteen..." he immediately shot back.
"They've probably had a lot of money backing them...we have to earn ours first -"
"No, we've just got to be ready with the right stuff, and get the right people to hear it...our sets are full of junk that only a few people really want to hear. If we go down to the Regency tonight where they've got a sold-out crowd with a big cover charge, you're going to hear first-rate pop, not the crap that we do...
"Okay...you're right...but what do you suggest? Oli's not going to change."
"Let's move on and do our own thing!"
"I can't do that to my own brother, Doze..."
"Then you're going to do the rock bar circuit and become a drunk," he stated matter-of-factly.
"Doze...that is such bullshit!"
"Anyway, I've had it. Two weeks, and I'm gone.." Darren insisted.
"You can't be serious..."
"I'm dead serious..."
Daniel saw the determination in his eyes. "Even if I left...how would we survive? I couldn't live at home, because my parents would kill me for doing that to Oli after all the time and money we've invested..."
"You know, Daniel, I'm surprised...I thought you were more grown up and independent. I mean, look - you've had jobs since you were young," he lectured.
"And don't forget it was Oli's girlfriend that got me one of those..."
"So you're going to live out the rest of your future on Oli's say so, because his girlfriend got you a job?"
"I feel bad that you're going to leave, Dozer, but I'm not bailing out on Oli like that..."
"You don't have to...you can give him a month's notice...give him time to find someone..."
"I don't know..." But Daniel knew he was not about leave his only paying job simply on the chance that Darren and he might make it big.
~ ~ ~
A month later:
Darren had given up his shifts at Woody's, to play with the band, but now that he was unemployed again, getting re-hired was no problem at all - no one ever stayed more than a month because of low wages and pure boredom. Theft among evening staff was high and Darren was reliable.
He was totally bored working at Woody’s and wondered often, if he had not made a huge mistake leaving the band. But he knew `Red Edge' was going nowhere and that he needed time away from their music and more time with good pop musicians. That was where the money was; that was where the future lay, if he wanted to be Australia’s best – which he was certain now, that he did. He wanted everyone to know his name. Playing smoky bars was hardly the answer. Finding other people with similar ideas had been more difficult than he expected.
To his surprise, Daniel came into Woody's one evening. Darren felt very pleasantly surprised and pleased to see him.
"We meet again!" grinned Darren. They shyly exchanged smiles and hugs. They had not been in touch since Darren had left the band. Neither had called the other, standing on pride, even though each had missed the other a good deal since going their separate ways.
"You were right..." Daniel said ruefully. Darren immediately picked up on Daniel’s troubled expression.
"What happened?" he asked, concerned.
"Oli got into a fight with one of the owners because he wouldn't pay us, and his partner jumped in. And then I jumped in, and...we were all charged with `assault'!
Darren was momentarily taken aback with surprise. "Sorry to hear that!" he offered, his voice full of caring. Genuine. Daniel realized then, just *how* much he'd missed Darren.
"Do you still want to do something together?" Daniel asked, feeling quite vulnerable and not doing a good job of sounding needy. There was the strong possibility that Darren had something else lined up now.
"You've quit?"
"Yehr! Ever since that incident, Oli and I are barely speaking to each other. Things weren't that good after you left, because he was badmouthing you, and I was defending you."
"Oh - you were...*defending* me?"
"Yehr," Daniel let go a small smile.
"Well...there would have to be some conditions..." Darren answered thoughtfully. in a no-nonsense tone.
"Conditions?? Like what?" Daniel asked edgily.
"You'd have to dye your hair lighter...and we'd have to share an
apartment, because I can't afford not to do a share..."
Daniel laughed but then studied him closely. Yes, he was serious. Sharing a small place sounded quite...*intimate*. "And it would have to be small,” Darren added, “Because I'm only doing twelve hours a week here - until we can afford something better..."
"How small?" Daniel eyed him somewhat apprehensively.
"You'd have to sleep with your cock up my ass!" quipped Darren mischievously. He was unmercifully teasing an obviously anxious Dan with his unique brand of wicked playfulness.
Daniel's shocked stare could have bored a large hole through Darren.
Finally composing himself, he answered "You realize just how *much* cock that would be, now?. He licked the salt off his upper lip. “I doubt you've got *room* for what I pack!!" Daniel found himself answering with equal wickedness.
It was Darren’s turn to feel self-conscious. He blushed so hard, he thought he would faint on hearing this unexpected, totally audacious comeback. Noticing Darren's embarrassment only served to arouse Daniel. His eyes misted over with raw desire. If they weren't stuck in a public place...
Catching the hungry look, Darren felt reassured and surprised himself by speaking evenly. "Well we'll see...won't we?" playing along, feigning a coolness he did not feel. His hands turned clammy and he began to perspire above his lip as his eyes burned with desire. His hand went reflexively to his throat and his fingers unconsciously began to trail downward toward the opening of his shirt. Daniel watched this movement intently. along with the liquid glow of his eyes.
"Some advice then..." Daniel boomed. "You better start practicing! You could start with a medium-size cucumber and..." Dan fixed him with an unblinking yet lusty gaze, letting him know he meant business. Was not simply leading him on. Darren gulped reflexively as a flood of wanting washed through him like a tidal wave. He found himself gripping the counter viselike, for balance. "Think I'd like a bite of that "Adam's apple" too..." Dan persisted, watching it bob intriguingly as the singer had gulped. He was enjoying Darren's mounting state of sexual turmoil.
"Stoppit!!" Darren hissed at him embarrassedly, blushing profusely at the explicitness of Daniel's spoken desire.
"Once I've started, I don't stop! -" Daniel warned him, starting to grin lasciviously, still admiring of just how red in the face he had caused the singer to become. "just so you know" Daniel's excitement continued to climb watching the effect his words were having upon Darren, his neck now displaying beads of perspiration, as he tried to calm himself. He had ceased looking like a “poofter” to Daniel and had transmuted instead to the perfect object of his lustful desires: Hot, invitingly ready. Wordlessly and endlessly *sexy*. He wanted every bit of him. Without thought, he leaned forward over the counter, demanding to feel those petal-like lips part to meet his own...
But Darren stopped him short with a firm hand held to his chest. "Customer!..." he whispered ominously. Sure enough, a thin, black-haired youth approached the counter, seemingly oblivious what had almost transpired.
"Ya got any 'Led Zeppelin'?" the kid asked Darren, ignoring Dan.
~ ~ ~
It was their first evening together in their new, small apartment, in their new queen size bed:
"We haven't even got a name for our new band..." commented Daniel, stirring from his orgasmic stupor, turning to face Darren questioningly.
"We'll call it...'Bliss'..." his new lover responded after a moment of hesitation. He adjusted their pillow more comfortably so both could share. As Daniel's cock began to ooze very slowly out of its new `guest quarters', his eyes again fell shut.
"'Bliss'?...hm-m-n...could live with that, I guess...." He spent a few more moments reviewing the name in his head, idly stroking Darren’s hair. He then slid his arm protectively around his warm body, giving his shoulder a small squeeze.
"Or...maybe..." Darren added after a few minutes more thought.
However, Daniel had began snoring quietly into Darren's back and Darren realized he was talking to himself. He glanced across the room, quietly studying a fresh bowl of bananas for the third time. //Could have been tense, if I hadn't practiced...// he reflected, his eyes closing drowsily. Drawing in a breath of satisfied contentment, he too, finally drifted off into a relaxed, deep sleep.
