The woman tries futily to smooth the wrinkles in the skirt of her dress. Her eyes dart around the room nervously. She runs a hand through her soft, silver streaked hair. She pulls out a compact to check her makeup, running a finger over the fine crow’s feet adorning her eyes, the prize for years of worry…worry on his behalf.
The reporter enters quietly.
“Sorry I’m late. Berlin traffic is brutal this time of day.” he apologizes.
“Don’t I know it. It’s quite alright.” she replies, with a soft, friendly smile.
The reporter sets up his electronic recorder, and sets it on the plain, white table between them.
“Shall we get started?” he asks.
“Let’s.”
“Ok, here we go. Khira Li Lindemann interview, August 15, 2022. Ok…My first question…Why memoirs…Why now?”
“I felt it was time. Time for the world to know about him, and who he REALLY was. Everyone seemed to have an opinion about my father, and they were very rarely ever the right one.”
“Aren’t you afraid that fans of your father’s band might be upset by the things you have to say about him?”
“I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true, or that I couldn’t confirm by my father’s own journals.”
“So, your allegation that he had various affairs with men is factually founded?”
With that, Khira took a shaky sigh.
“Yes. He did.”
“And how long did you know about these affairs? Did you know about them when you were a child?”
“I knew that the way he interacted with men was different than the way other fathers did, but I didn’t fully understand until I was well into my teens.”
“And his band mates?”
“Yes, them too. I eventually realized the dynamic of their relationship was very different than just friendship.”
“Tell me about the first time you realized this to be the case.”
“I was about 14 or 15, I forget now. I was following my dad on tour with his band. I had just gotten back to the hotel after a shopping trip with my Uncle Schneider…”
“Excuse me…Uncle?”
“I called all my father’s band mates ‘Uncle’…”
“Ah, ok. Please, continue…”
“I went in search of my father, and found he wasn’t in his dressing room. I kept looking, and heard noises coming from my Uncle Till’s dressing room. The door was cracked, so I looked inside, and saw him kissing my father, romantically. That’s when everything began to make sense to me.”
“You maintain that your father had relationships with all of his band members?”
“At one time or another, yes, he did. After some years, though, they all settled down into their own relationships, and he remained a bachelor.”
“So, your father was very…active sexually?”
With that, Khira sighed perturbedly.
“Look…I know everyone has the idea my father was a coke snorting, alcoholic faggot, but there was so much more to him than that. He loved me with a passion. He protected and provided for me with everything he had. And in his band mates, I found a sense of family many children only dream of. I was raised in an environment of love and kindness. When I wrote these memoirs, I wanted to directly address all the evils attributed to my father, and cast them aside. I wanted to shine the spotlight on his heart, and how good it really was.”
The reporter nodded solemnly.
“How did your father die?”
“He overdosed on cocaine at home.” she replied, tears beginning to softly flow.
“How did you feel when you heard the news? How did you get through it?”
“I was devastated, but I knew it was going to happen. After their last album, and their breakup, he went on a downward spiral none of us could pull him out of. That band, well, music in general was his life. He felt useless without it. I was only able to make it because of the love of my uncles, and my husband. They have been an invaluable source of love and support.”
The reporter clicked off his recorder.
“Well, I think that’s everything. Thank you so much for your time.” he said, shaking her hand.
“Thank you.” she replied softly, blotting tears.
They both rose, and left the room.
A man a bit older than she waited outside in an old, wooden chair.
“Did it go alright, darling?” he asked, scooping her up in his arms.
“Same old questions about my father’s sex life, but otherwise, it went well.”
He laughed softly.
“Notice that no one ever wants to know about who MY father slept with.”
She laughed along with him.
“Well, Emil…look who your father WAS.”
They embraced, and kissed softly, leaving arm in arm.
