I board my humble craft. The waves are surprisingly soft today, gently cresting into billows of foam. All I want is to let the smell of ocean air clear my head. God knows I need it. I slide off my shirt, and let it fall to the deck. My paling skin is in desperate need of the sun’s attention, and it will receive it in abundance today, once it has fully risen. It is still early yet.
I feel my aching muscles complain loudly as they clench while I tighten the rope that holds the sails taut. This used to be so much easier. Then again, MANY things used to be easier. Time truly does march on, I suppose.
I love it here, my summer home off the coast of Italy. No one knows about it. Except you, of course. This was once our secret hideaway, but that was before…
I lay upon the deck, boat rocking gently like a cradle on the waves. The sun glows hotter now that morning is in full swing. I sit up long enough to apply some tanning lotion to my arms, chest, and the places of my back that I can reach without assistance, and I lay down once more. I set the alarm on my expensive, digital watch, the one you gave to me not so long ago. I know I’ll fall asleep, and I’d rather grow golden from the sun, not burnt. Soon, sleep does come. And the dreams.
I see you, sitting at the bow of this very vessel. Your skin is glowing from sunlight, glistening with sweat. Your longish hair sticks to your face. You look so completely serene. I attend to the sails, then sit beside you. Your head rests on my bare chest, and your arm wraps around my waist. “Can life truly be so perfect?” you ask. I simply smile. Your lips find mine, and our tongues lock, wrestling for dominance as our hands wander.
I adore the feeling of your skin. I adore the scent of you. The wet sounds our kisses make. The taste of sweat and sea spray as I suck at your nipples. The sight of you relishing my affections.
BEEP..................BEEP..................BEEP..................BEEP
I awaken softly, set the alarm again, and turn on to my stomach. Sleep drags me into its murky depths once more.
I see you now, sitting in precisely the same spot on this boat. Only now you are anything but serene. “Richard, is something troubling you?” Of course something is. You were in New York for months, never calling me, never writing me…Having no contact with me whatsoever. Then, out of nowhere, you demand we come here. I am so delighted just to see you again, I readily oblige. Foolish me…I never question why we’ve gone so long without contact.
You simply gaze out upon the ocean. Your muscles are taut, as if you are ready to spring out into the waves at a moment’s notice. I reach out and begin to rub them, trying to ease your tension. I feel them tighten more beneath my hands, and you wriggle away from my touch. You rise and walk to the stern of the sailboat.
“Richard, what is it?” You hold your chin thoughtfully, as a tear slides down your cheek. The blood in my veins is like ice water as fear chills me. “Say something, Please!” “Till…I can’t do this anymore.” “Do what?” I ask, rubbing your shoulder. You reach and throw my hand off of you. “What is THIS, then?” I ask, pained by your rejection.
“Till…I met someone…”
The dagger is thrust into my chest.
“Who?”
“Her name is Caron.“
And now the dagger is twisted, slowly.
“Oh?” I ask, trying to seem unaffected by your declaration.
“We are getting married.”
And now the dagger is removed, and my still-beating heart is removed with it.
“Oh…” I turn, leaning against a nearby mast, in hopes of aiding my trembling legs in keeping me upright.
“Till, I am sorry but…” And now, you cast my blackened heart into the waves, “…this is how it must be.”
“Yes…” is all I can say.
BEEP....................BEEP..................BEEP................BEEP
I sob onto my hands. I am so cold, so alone. I sit up, sobbing more deeply. I curse your name in the witness of the sun and the sea. Everyone wonders why the ideal of ‘faith’ is like bile in my mouth…I’ve nothing LEFT to believe in…
I see someone, a man, on the shore waving madly. I squint my eyes against the sunlight, and see you. My heart leaps! I rub my burning eyes, and look once more, and see it was merely a mirage. A young woman runs up and embraces the young man who is obviously not you. It SHOULD have been obvious to me it wasn’t you…that it couldn’t, wouldn’t have been.
I stand at the edge of the ship, looking down into the sea. Life abounds within, fish and various ocean creatures. A solitary tear falls as I look up to the sun which no longer offers me warmth. The sky which no longer shares it beauty with me…just like you. One step, then two, and I feel the sea offer me the last kiss I’ll ever share, as an oh-so-welcomed darkness overtakes me one last time.
“…this is how it must be.”
