The party raged on around her as she stood on the stairs. She wasn't quite sure if it was the music or her heart that was pounding deafeningly in her ears. The two girls in front of her chatted animatedly as they waited. She didn't know how they could be so relaxed she thought as she began fussily straightening her shirt. What in the hell am I doing here? She thought as others joined the line. A thickly muscled and tall black guy came up beside them on the stairs. He was dressed in an expensive suit and handed them each a glossy photo.
"Here you go" he said as he passed her one.
"Uh thanks," she said with a forced grin as the bile rose in her throat. Oh god was she going to puke? She reflexively put a hand over her mouth.
"You ok," The big guy asked her as laid one of his massive hands on her arm.
"Yeah, I am fine" she said weakly as her stomach churned again. She thought of just turning around and walking out. She didn't have to do this. She would just embarrass herself. Her friends would be disappointed yes but they didn't have to know she coped out. She could just tell them she didn't get a chance to met him thats all. She had actually turned to go back down stairs when the big guy taped her shoulder.
"Lets go, its time" he said with a reassuring smile.
She felt her knees go weak and her feet wouldn't respond to her commands. Oh god that is all I need is to fall she thought as she struggled to put one foot in front of the other. They seemed to weight a ton.
When she reached the top of the steps, she had entered a room that looked very much just like a normal bar. There were round tables scattered about and a bar over against one wall. The lights were turned up bright, for the pictures she thougtht absently. As she waited her turn the guy in the suit walked over to her.
"You will be fine" he said with that reassuring smile again has he lightly patted her shoulder.
"I don't know about that" she said forcing another weak smile. What in the hell was she doing? She was 25 not 15 and she was out of her mind for doing this.
The girl that had been in front of her smiled big for her picture as she sat beside probally the most beautiful guy in the entire known universe. She hugged him smiling as she got up.
"Hey I'm Chad" The guy with the other girls camera said to her as she stepped up. "You got your camera ready?"
"Uh yeah," she juggled her stuff nervously trying not to drop everything. She handed him the camera."All you have to do is push the red button at the top" she said pointing to it.
"Ok great," he gave her a toothy smile as she went to sit down on shaky legs.
"Hi" her dream guys said with a shy smile.
"Hey" she said back looking down at the table top. She passed over the standard picture to him.
"So what's you name?" he asked
"Kristy," she said to the table "with a K" she added hastily not looking at his face.
He began to write in his untidy left handed scroll.
He paused at the end of her name. "Y or I?" he asked his marker perched to finish the name.
"Y" she almost stammared and somewhere a flash went off.
"Hugh?" he said leaning closer to hear her better over the loud music.
"Y" she said more clearly for him "Sorry, Southern accent" she added with a weak laugh.
He laughed with her and polished off the enscription. There you go he said handing her back the glossy pic. She looked at it with reverency.
"Smile, you two" Chad said from across the table.
They smiled as the camera flashed then she got up from the table. She didn't even look back at him.
She retrieved her camera from Chad and walked away. My god she was suck a freaking dork. This was definitely not how she picture meeting the guy she had always really......well......loved. There was just no other way to put it, freakish or not, she had loved him since she was nine. She walked over to a quiet spot in the corner and put her hands over her face. Oh god she had blown it. Her one chance to meet him. Way to go Krispers, the girls will be so proud, she thought in disgust.
"Is it that bad?" she heard from somewhere around her.
"Hugh?" she lifted her head and looked around. The other girls were already crowed and chatting animatedly with the guys.
"Was it that bad?" she heard again. This time it was from her left. She looked in that direction and saw the wide smiling face of the massive and exquisitely dressed black guy who had given her the picture earlier.
She gave a nervous laugh "Well I guess I could have passed out in front of him" she said with a slight shrug.
"I have seen it done," He said moving over to stand beside her and face the room.
"Oh I am sorry" she said angling toward him and sticking out her hand hoping against hope it wasn't dripping with sweat "I am Kristy" she finished with a huge smile. Her checks were starting to ache with all of the smiling that seemed to be warranted.
"Hey, Kristy I am Brian but everyone pretty much knows me as Bubba" He said enclosing his massive hand over hers and gripping it strongly.
"Oh so you are Bubba, Its so nice to finally meet you. I have heard lots of good stuff" She said enthuastically still smiling and hoping to get her hand back soon. He released her hand and smiled back easily.
"really?"
"Yeah, and I really wanted to thank you for adding a post to the JK-UK message board, it means more than you know to the girls to feel that they are actually acknowledge in all of this." She said with a hand on his arm.
"Oh, you post on the message board?" he asked enthusiastically "What is your name there?"
"its Krispers" she said with that huge smile again. That must be a nervous response she thought absently as she felt her cheeks cramp. When he raised his eyebrows at her she just laughed and added "don't ask"
"Wasn't going to," He said with a chuckle and his hands raised in a I won't go there gesture. "I will have to get on there tonight and see what you replied to me"
"it was probally just me kissing your butt" she said with a slight chuckle.
"My butt?" he said looking back at his own.
"Sorry, I guess you wouldn't understand that joke" she said with a fake laugh. Way to go dumb ass she mentally smacked herself.
"I really like it over there, it was so nice of Liz to add me on" he said with pride in his voice.
She laughed as his emotion. It was so great to see one of the team actually wanting to communicate with the fans.
"It is really nice over there, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. So much better than the alternative" She added with a roll of her eyes at the chatting girls.
He laughed hard and when she cocked her eyes brows at his response he only laughed harder and added "Ok so now you can't ask"
"Wouldn't dream of it, but you have made me curious" she added knowing exactly what he meant.
There was a pause in the conversation that allowed her to notice the music from down stairs and she bounced along. She stopped abruptly when she noticed Bubba's attention shift. Out of the corner of her eye she saw her dream guy start to walk over and her insides froze. She chanced another glance without moving her head and yes, oh god yes, it was him and he was coming straight at her. All time seemed to slow down as she watched him progress to where they stood. She was afraid to move.
"Hey" he said practically to her back and she told herself that he was talking to Bubba. Don't be stupid she said, he was just talking to Bubba, not you. The easiness that her chat with Bubba had created shattered into a million irretreavable pieces. Don't be stupid. Don't say or do anything stupid. She kept reminding herself.
They all just stood there for another moment and the visitor had to actually shift to come into her line of vision.
"hey" he repeated shyly this time. His earlier confidence was gone at the sight of her reaction. "You haven't introduced yourself yet" he said with his hand out in greeting so she was sure he meant her this time.
"Oh hey" she said with the slightest shake to her voice as she nervously tried to wipe her sweaty hand on her pants without notice.
"Its Kristy," she said grasping his hand and noticing his grip was almost as strong as Bubba's.
"hey Kristy, I am Jordan".
Her sarcastic side wanted to say no shit Sherlock, that's why I am here but she slapped that comment down and tried to come off like an average human being that was not about to pass out.
"Sorry about the late introduction, but you looked pretty busy over there" she said gesturing her head to the crowd now engulfing Chad and Payton, the promotor.
He shifted his upper body to glance in their direction and when he turned back she noticed him roll those beautiful brown eyes at Bubba. Bubba responded to his expression with a soundless chuckle that made him shake.
There was an odd moment of silenced as her mind raced with possible conversation topics. She was so socially inept she thought frustratedly. He was a total stranger, well almost, and she had no clue what to say to him except that she was totally obcessed with him. She wanted to smack herself again, that was confirmation she was the freak that she had always fought hard not to be.
For some reason God decided to smile on her and sent the topic of baseball to the front of her mind.
"Oh!" she almost shouted him in relief. "congratulations on your team winning the series! They so deserved it!" She finished with a little too much bubble in her voice as she nervously attempted a conversation starter.
"Oh thanks," he said in relief himself "the curse is finally broken"
"They finally did it, alright" Bubba laughed at their awkwardness. "but I enjoyed the playoffs so much more than the series" he added looking from one to the other trying to do his part.
"Your right" she said "they were more exciting"
There was that silence again. She looked around frantically for something to jog her mind about what in the hell to say to him. She was shocked when he looked at her and spoke
"If don't mind me saying so" he continued without pausing for an answer "You have the most beautiful dimples" he finished looking at the floor. Bubba reacted first to the comment and almost gaped at her. The comment had floored her and that was evident. She blushed, she knew she did, and was actually shocked at his apparent shyness.
"Oh thank you, I have always admired yours too" She added with out really thinking about it and feeling the heat continuing to rise in her face.
"Always?" he jerked his head up at her with a curious raised eyebrow "Just how long have you been a fan?"
That was it, he asked. He had just asked the dreaded question that would shatter her flimsy coolness she had been trying desperately to portray. Now she really was going to seem like a complete freak.
"well...." She thought carefully of how to say it "I have been a fan ever since I saw you step into a spotlight with a hat pulled low. Then you grabbed your mic, spun around and began singing my favorite song" She thought that was as unfreakish as she could go with that memory as it played in her mind. The thought of it made her jump inside. She was actually standing beside him! She couldn't believe she was actually talking to him!
His response jerked her back to reality.
"Oh you mean this?" He said with a laugh as he executed his infamous spin.
Her head seemed to whirl as if she had just spun around herself. Oh god, what the hell was he doing? She thought desperately. Is he actually flirting with her? She wasn't quite sure and the prospect of it seemed to unsteady her.
She waved her hand in bubba's direction.
"If he keeps that up much longer, you will have to carry me out of here"
Bubba only grinned and then laughed with them as she pretended to fan herself.
Her mind back in her head again she remember her only mission for the night.
"Oh goodness, I almost forgot. I need to give you a hug and a kiss from all of the girls at JK-UK." She said with a come here gesture.
He leaned over and offered his cheek and she smacked a kiss against his stubble and half hugged him with a breif pat on the back.
During the hug he said "Ok, Ok, I know I need to get my cute little butt over there to see them" he finished releasing her in a take it easy gesture.
At that moment two things struck her. The first was his incredable smell. Not one that came with cologne but just with the soap he used. She would never forget that smell. The second was that he had actually quoted something that someone had posted on the message board. The thought of him actually reading the stuff that they posted about him sent a wave of embarrassment through her. She was so taken back by his gesture and response it didn't occur to her that they rarely used actual names on there. When she thought about what he had said she was shocked. She wasn't trying to berate him at all, she was just trying to make normal conversation.
Bubba noticed her confused expression and tried to reassure her efforts buy leaning over and grimacing extravangantly at Jordan's backside and adding "Its not really that cute"
Oh my yes it is she though to herself, but only chuckled at Bubba.
Jordan tried to look at his butt and fake a hurt expression at Bubba. When he straightened he smiled at her laugh.
"So I don't get a hug and kiss from you then?" he said grinning almost devilishly at her.
She really didn't think before she responed. That look had sent her tempature rising and she need to get off the subject quickly before she jumped him. "What another one?" she said looking in the direction of the chatting girls. Some of them had become aware of his vacancy and were glancing over curiously. So jealous she thought confidently.
He noticed where she was looking and understanding came across his face "well, your right. We don't want to make the others jealous now do we?" he said making a motion over to the group.
She didn't think, she didn't even miss a beat. She opened her mouth and totally embarrassed herself forever in one swift motion "Oh well, I guess my plan for laying you out on the floor is out now". She had said it so plainly, he almost cricked his neck when he jerked his head around to look at her. She smiled as innocently as she could managed and shruged her shoulders in a what gesture. A blush began to creep slowly across his face. That was when the gravity of her statement hit her and she begain mentally kicking herself again. Shit why did she say that? Oh god this was the proof that she really was a freak.
After a moments pause he gave a shocked and nervous laugh "Yeah that wouldn't....er....be quite far to the rest of the girls" He said regaining his composure as the blush finally began to subside.
She glanced almost terrified over at Bubba who just kept on smiling and rocking on his heels with his hands behind his back, like it was all just business to him.
Chad walked over, leaned in and said something to Jordan who smiled and nodded. Damn his smile was beautiful. She looked down quickly at the floor when his gaze met hers in complete surprise. Fuck it all, he had caught her looking.
"Oh Chad this is Kristy" Jordan said with a quick gesture over in her direction.
"Whats up" he said with a jerk of his head and then gave her an apraising once over.
"Nice to meet you" she said and brushed her hair out of her eyes aggitatedly. His gaze over her had made her really uncomfortable, almost slimy.
Chad caught the sparkle of her diamond as she moved.
"Nice ring" he pointed out absently
"Thanks" she said with her hand held out so that everyone could see. That damn snake in the grass she thought angrily. He had done that on purpose.
Chad grinned at her apparent annoyance. "So wheres hubby" he said almost sarcastically.
"He's at home," she said cooly and avoiding Jordan's questioning gaze "because as you well know, what happens in Chapel Hill stays in Chapel Hill" she finished looking him dead in the eye determined to piss him off.
They all laughed attempting to ease the increasing tension and she exchanged a playfull glance with Jordan that made Chad raise his eyebrows.
"Oh its almost time to start" Chad said glancing at his watch. He walked back over to chat with the promoter.
"Well I better round up these ladies" Bubba said excusing himself with a sigh of dread.
"So you live around here?" Jordan asked her as he moved into Bubba's vacated position.
"No, I live in Charleston, South Carolina" she replied and just realized that they were completely alone.
"Charleston? How far away is that?" he asked
"about 5 hours" she said noticing how easy it had become to talk to him.
"wow thats a long drive just to see me" he laughed.
Thats what you think she thought to herself. "well if you came to Charleston then I wouldn't have to drive" she said easily with a cool grin.
"maybe I just will" he added returning her grin.
She was hoping against hope that they were sliding into that familiar first meeting flirt that occured with random guys at a bar. She finally felt comfortable and not like passing out. He is just a normal guy she thought confidentally and that was ok. In fact, it made him even better in her eyes. They both relaxed in to chatter and she noticed that an old Marky Mark and the funky bunch song came on in the background.
How fitting she thought and smiled to herself. He was looking at her odd smile and seemed about to question it when his name was called.
"Jordan" Damn it was that medaling Chad again "we have got to get ready"
"Yeah ok," He started to walk off. Looking back at her he said with a grin "hope you enjoy the show" and strolled over to Chad.
"Oh don't you worry your pretty little head, I will" she said to herself as she watched his cute butt walk away.
She took one more look around to absorb it all and let out a tense breath. As she turned toward the stairs to leave she heard him sing the chorus to the song at the top of his lungs.
"What a guy" she said shaking her head as she slowly made her way back down to the pulsing crowd.
When she got to the bottom of the stairs it was absolute chaos. She passed Bubba on the way and sent him a huge smile. He only winked at her with a knowing chuckle.
The partying crowd were drunk as hell and chanting Jordan's name. She managed to squeeze inbetween two drunk girls infront that looked young enough to be in high school. They were screaming their heads off to no one in particular. Jordan started the show with his latest, well 4 years ago hit, and the crowd began to move and sing along. Everyone was so into the show they kept shouting out old favorites to play. Two guys behind her even had homemade I LUV JK tee-shirts on. He did a few old songs and then sat down at the keyboard to do some slow tunes. People seemed to couple up just like at the school dances and move drunkenly along to the songs. After the slow tunes Chad got the crowd pumped up again by spinning and scratching some records and then said that Jordan was going to show off some new stuff. They were chatting back and forth about whether or not they crowd could handle just how hot they were going to get when Chad did something that almost made her heart stop. She had thought she had caught Jordan's eye several times during the performance but couldn't be sure he was actually looking at her. When Chad decided that the crowd could handle the new hotness he annouced "Because what happens in Chapel Hill, stay right here in Chapel Hill" and then Jordan spun around an pointed directly at her with a laugh. They went into her favorite new song Don't Cry. The two girls beside her couldn't believe that Jordan actually pointed at her and asked if she was with him with drunken slurs. She only grinned and said cooly "I am only his east coast girl friend" They paused a moment in confusion and then resumed their screaming and trying to grab at him. He did another new selection and then finished off with the crowd two biggest requests. After he finished the drunken group was so charged up that Bubba had to actually carry Jordan off the stage and back up the stairs. The crowd slowly disapated from around the stage and began to move as Chad stayed on to DJ for their dancing.
Her head was spinning and her insides tingling after her first solo Jordan show. She was so excited she didn't know what to do. Forgetting herself for a moment she actually reached for her cell phone to call....oh thats right who was she going to call, all her friends were an ocean away.
She decided to use the restroom before she left and of course there was a long line filled with drunk girls. She waited patiently, recounting every moment in her head. As she was leaning against the wall she saw Bubba emerge from the stairs, Jordan in tow behind him. Her heart leapt into her throat. She kept her eyes on Jordan and he actually looked at her and mouthed bye as he almost ran out the door. She couldn't catch her breath. She put a hand to her chest and sighed up against the wall, which warrented some wary glances from the party girls but she couldn't care less. This by far was the best night of her life.
On the short drive back to the hotel she was reliving every minute of the encounter. She had to make sure she took note of everything because she knew her friends would want to know everything. They would ask she laughed to herself, if they could only see her now!
