Part I
This Wait for Destiny Won’t Do
The night was calm and cool as the light breeze blew through his hair. He was the bass player and lead singer of the All-American Rejects, better known as Tyson Ritter. He was walking the near deserted streets of Austin and was stunned when he saw the enormous crowd of people standing outside of one of the local bars. The crowd was fairly out of place, as the rest of the street was empty. Wonder what the deal is. He thought to himself as he pushed his way through the crowd and walked into the bar. The music dazed him as his gaze worked its way to the young woman singing on the small stage. He listened closely as her voice washed over him. Damn this girl is good. She’d be a great opener especially the way she’s packed all these people into this bar. Suddenly the song ended and the girl on stage looked out into the crowd.
“Thanks for coming tonight!” She screamed. “I’ll be back tomorrow for all you fans out there! So good night!” She screamed and headed backstage. Tyson was now sitting at the bar. He turned to the bar tender.
“Who’s that girl? The one who was singing.” He asked. The bar tender looked down at him.
“That’s Piper McCoy. She plays here every night for one week out of the month. The crowd loves her.” He replied. Tyson thought to himself a second and then decided he’d buy her a drink.
When Piper came out into the audience she was stopped by one of the security guards. She was a little surprised when he told her that a young gentle man at the bar had invited her for a drink. She walked over to the bar and the bar tender pointed him out to her. She took at seat next to him, but didn’t see his face. He then looked up at her and she almost fell off the barstool in astonishment.
“Holy shit, your Tyson Ritter!” She screamed. “Tyson from All-American Rejects!” Tyson smiled.
“Yeah, I was walking around, ‘cuz I had a free night and I heard your music and decided I wanted to meet you.” He stated. Piper was shocked. “Your stuff is really good.” She was now about ready to pass out. Tyson had just told her that her music was good.
“You really think so? Gosh, it doesn’t even compare to yours. I love you guys’ stuff. The stuff you write is just, just wow.” She smiled; still slightly shocked that she was sitting next to, let alone talking to, Tyson. He looked her over and it hit him that he was very much attracted to her. He liked her brown hair and her chocolate brown eyes. They were such a big contrast to his pale blue ones.
“You know we’re looking for a new opening act, if maybe you had a demo that you could give me. Then I could play in for the guys and see what they think.” She practically choked on her drink.
“Are you for real?” She asked.
“Yeah, I like your music, or at least what I heard of it.” He replied, casually. She thought a minute and then pulled a demo CD out of her bag.
“Well, this is what I’ve got on me. It’s only like three of my songs, but if you need more my numbers on the CD and you can call and I can get my back up band to come and we can play for you guys.” He smiled as he took the CD from her hands. They continued to talk as the night went on. He realized that he wasn’t only attracted to her physically, but that he was beginning to like her personality. It was like they almost immediately clicked.
It was early spring the second time he saw her. Piper McCoy was now a rising star. She had walked over to his bus to meet the additional members of the band she was opening for. The problem with this picture was that her boyfriend, Luke, was always by her side. Luke Robinson was the guitar player in her backup band. Tyson was stunned when she practically skipped on his bus to meet the guys. Nick, having known Tyson since a party in high school, knew the look Tyson got when he saw a girl he was into. He nudged Tyson in the arm. Tyson turned his gaze to Nick, who wore a huge smile that said ‘I know you think she’s hot’. Piper was now standing in front of the group of guys and was ready to introduce herself and her boyfriend.
“You must be Piper.” Nick jumped in, as Tyson was kind of speechless. She smiled.
“Yup that’s me. I’m totally psyched about opening for you guys. I fully love your music and your lyrics are like amazing!” She said excitedly, shaking Nick’s hand. Then she remembered Luke standing beside her. “This is my boyfriend Luke Robinson.” She stated. Nick looked back at Tyson, who was now looking at the floor. He had heard her music and had become greatly intrigued.
“Well, I’m Nick and this here is Chris, Mike, and you already know Tyson.” Nick said as Chris and Mike shook hands with Piper and Luke. Tyson just smiled and then mumbled something about having a date with a groupie and left. Piper and Luke stayed to talk to the guys for a bit longer.
Tyson walked off the bus and into the cool night breeze. He began to walk towards a bar where he was going to meet some groupie whom he couldn’t remember the name of. Upon getting there he ordered himself a drink and waited for his date to arrive. She was late, as all of them always were. When she finally stumbled into the bar, Tyson was on his way back to the bus. He decided to just walk right past her, not that she would have noticed him; she was completely wasted.
Meanwhile on the bus Piper and Luke were still in conversation with Nick, Mike, and Chris. Piper had just asked what the deal was with Tyson just walking off like that.
“I mean, I would have thought he woulda at least said hi or something. He seemed so nice when he came to my gig and asked me to open for you guys. He acted like he’d never met me before.” Nick noticed the hurt in her voice.
“He’s just tired from the show and all.” He stated, trying to cover for his friend. He knew that he liked Piper because she was all he talked about for a straight week after meeting her in that bar in Austin. They all turned when the sound of the door was heard. Tyson walked in and mumbled a goodnight and continued to walk until he reached his bunk. Piper turned to Nick.
“Talk to him. He looks kinda upset.” She said to Nick as Luke practically pulled her up off of the couch. “Night guys.” She stated walking off the bus with Luke. As they were walking Luke turned to her.
“Why are you so worried about him?” Piper stopped dead in her tracks.
“Because if Tyson doesn’t feel good the show gets canceled. We open for the show. Make sense?” She shot back at him.
“Don’t get smart with me. I hate it when you do that.” She let go of his hand and stormed onto her bus. She had just been stating a fact, not being smart-mouthed. She couldn’t stand how he was so overly territorial.
Nick walked to the back of the bus. He was worried about Tyson and knew that he probably needed someone to talk to. Sure enough, as he often was when he was upset, Tyson was laid back on his bunk listening to his portable CD player. Nick sat down and Tyson opened his eyes having felt the cheap mattress shift. He slipped off his headphones and looked up at his friend.
“What?” He snapped. He’s really hurting. Nick thought, knowing Tyson to be a person who doesn’t usually snap at people.
“Dude, don’t try to fake it. You wanna talk?” He asked, hoping Tyson would confide in him. Tyson picked up his pillow and covered his face with it. Nick could hear his muffled scream of frustration.
“Why the hell does she have to have a boyfriend? Why the fuck can’t this one girl be single!?” He screamed, having removed the pillow and thrown it across the room.
“So, you like her, don’t you?” Tyson’s features softened at the question.
“Man, I haven’t even known her that long. I mean I only talked to her once at that bar and then on the phone, but there was just something about her. Why is it that I finally find a good looking girl who’s not a complete air-head, that she has to be dating some cocky ass guitar player?” He was now sitting against the wall of the bunk. Nick turned to him.
“Already calling the boyfriend bad names are we? How long had you been talking to her on the phone?” Tyson had never told him.
“Since the day after I met her. We really hit it off. Now I see she was just playing with me.” Nick gave a slight chuckle and received an evil glare from Tyson.
“She wasn’t playing with you, or at least not from the way she asked me to talk to you before she left. Luke noticed too, and by the way he pulled her off the bus I would say that relationship is going down the drain.” Tyson smiled as Nick stood.
“She was worried about me?” Tyson asked. Nick nodded and walked out leaving Tyson to wallow in his thoughts.
A few weeks had gone by before Tyson actually got up the nerve to go and talk to Piper. She was sitting on her bus watching television alone, since Luke had gone to the store to get a few things he had forgotten. He casually walked onto the bus and found Piper in front of the television.
“Hey.” He whispered softly, taking a seat next to her on the couch. She looked up at him meeting his baby blue eyes with her own.
“Finally something other then a grunt or mumble.” She replied. “You’ve acted like I’m a leper or something since I walked onto you guys’ bus.” He was now looking at the floor.
“Yeah, sorry about that. Had a lot on my mind. So, you looking forward to the show tonight?” He had quickly changed the subject in an effort for her not to ask what he had on his mind.
“I’m nervous. It’s a big crowd and they’ll be expecting a lot from me. I just hope I can deliver.” Tyson’s gaze had again settled on her.
“You’ll be fine. No sweat. Now then what are you watching?” Someone or something had started singing.
“It’s Alvin and the Chipmunks. It’s like the best cartoon ever!” She replied looking him over before he had the chance to notice. They both sat for a while just enjoying each other’s company and watching cartoons.
Tyson stood backstage. The night was still young and the concert was in full swing. He watched as Piper sang. Damn, she’s so passionate about music. Damn she looks beautiful. He thought as Piper finished her first song. He watched as her facial expressions switched due to the suddenness of the now upbeat tempo. He felt someone behind him and he turned to see Nick standing there.
“She’s really damn good.” Nick stated as Tyson turned around.
“Yeah, and beautiful, too.” He turned back, realizing what he had just said. Nick smiled.
“Man, you so want her in the pants.” He declared, receiving a punch in the arm from Tyson. Nick ran off as Tyson began to watch the stage once more. Piper looked over at him and smiled, having finished another song. She received a warm and loving smile in return from the singer standing back stage watching her.
