Part I
Stillwater, Oklahoma has and always will be a small town of drunken parties filled with college kids. It’s the home of Oklahoma State University, but even with all the college parties and college kids running around Nick Wheeler was still drawn to music. At a young age he began to have an attraction to his sister’s music collection. She would often catch him in her room listening to her music collection trying to imitate the musicians on the albums. It wasn’t long after this that Nick began to play guitar; he had always had a certain love for it. After mastering guitar he moved on to include drums to his expertise. This addition landed him in his first band as he entered high school. He also landed his first crush on a very special girl. He watched her everyday as she walked in his English class. She sat across the room from him and he would often be caught watching her as he was now. He watched as she brushed a stray piece of hair behind her ear. She completely captivated the young guitarist. She was all he ever thought about, well her and his music. He wanted nothing more then for her to actually notice him for a change. Of course, she never did.
“Mr. Wheeler?” Said a familiar voice. Nick was in a daze watching the girl he desired. “Mr. Wheeler!” The voice screamed. Nick snapped out of his daze as the class erupted with laughter. Blushing, he looked down at the book on his desk. “Mr. Wheeler, if you’re quite done staring at Miss Monroe, would you please read for us.” The voice of his teacher had said her name causing Nick to turn an even darker shade of pink as he began to read. This event seemed to happen quite often, but Miss Monroe, or Lexie as most people called her, was yet to notice that Nick was more then just a garage band geek, as she liked to call him.
After school as Nick walked home with his friend and band member, Mark Angus. He couldn’t help thinking about the incident in English. Mark snapped his friend out of his thoughts.
“Dude, Nick; earth to Nick!” Mark screamed causing Nick to look up. “We got band practice tonight before the gig right?” Mark inquired.
“Yeah, we do, like always.” He replied and paused to think before continuing. “You think Lexie’ll be there? At the party I mean.” Mark gave a slight laugh.
“Nick, it’s not really her scene. Is she all you ever think about?” Nick smiled.
“Lexie and music my friend, Lexie and music.” He replied as the two young boys continued to walk.
Nick woke up and looked at his clock. He had to blink a few times before the digits came into focus. He quickly jumped out of bed.
“Shit!” He screamed. He grabbed his drumsticks and shoved them in the back pocket of his jeans. He was late for practice due to his nap and particularly to his dream of Lexie on a nude beach somewhere in California. He quickly grabbed his Guns and Roses shirt and pulled it over his head before slipping on his red high-topped chucks, and running out the door. He ran as fast as he could to where the party was to be held, and where his band was sure to be practicing at this exact moment. He burst into the house and made an extra good effort at not being noticed, but as luck would have it, Mark caught him after he knocked over part of his drum set.
“Nick, what the hell took you so long?” He asked rather pissed off. Nick was trying to set his drum set back up once again.
“Well, I sort of dosed off. Sorry, man.” He replied sitting down, now ready to rehearse. So, that’s exactly what they did. They rehearsed until people starting showing up. Mark called a ten-minute break so that the guys could mingle for a bit. A young girl walked over to Nick.
“Nick, hey! You guys sound great.” She exclaimed.
“Hey, Skye! What are you doing here?” He asked hugging her. The young girl was Skye Davison, his closest girl friend. She knew about his obsession with Lexie, but little did Nick know, she had liked him for years.
“Well, I couldn’t miss your gig. Plus, my gay ass brother is here, so I tagged along.” Nick smiled. It meant a lot that she had come to his gig and he knew how much she hated her brother.
“You drove in the same car with your brother for me?” He asked.
“Yeah, all for you, Nick.” She stated with a bit of sarcasm so he wouldn’t know she really meant what she said.
“Thanks, Skye.” He said giving her a kiss on the cheek. Fortunately for Skye, Mark called Nick back to his drum set before her cheeks turned the dark blush pink that they now were. If only he knew. She thought to herself as Nick sat down at his drum set and his band began to play.
In the middle of Nick’s set a young boy came and stood next to Skye in the front. His eyes were glued to Nick’s band. He stared as they played. Skye turned to him.
“You a fan?” She asked. The young boy turned to her.
“What?” He asked. Skye rolled her eyes and turned back to the stage.
“Are you a fan? You’ve been staring at them for the last few songs.” She screamed over the guitar solo.
“I gotta get in that band!” He screamed back. Skye smiled to herself. She knew how badly the band needed a bass player. She grabbed him by the hand and dragged him to a slightly quieter location. “Hey!” He screamed. He was no older then fourteen and at a party with high school students. Getting pulled off by some strange girl definitely was not on his list of things to do. Tears were beginning to well in his baby blue eyes as they both came to a stop.
“Look, do you play bass?” Skye asked him. The young boy thought a second.
“Yeah, I play bass!” His excitement was rising. Skye smiled.
“Well, what’s your name? Mine’s Skye.” She replied trying to make the young boy feel a little better after noticing the tears that had welled in his eyes while she was dragging him away from the band he had been staring at.
“Tyson Ritter.” He replied. He continued to talk to Skye about the band. Little did Skye know, but Tyson had never even picked up a bass guitar before. He was going to have to spend his entire Christmas break teaching himself how to play, but it would all be worth it in the end. Tyson had a good feeling about this band; a very good feeling.
After Nick’s performance was finished he met up with Skye. The first thing he noticed was Tyson standing next to her. He shot Skye a questioning look.
“Skye, who’s the kid?” He asked wiping a trail of sweat from his forehead. Skye smiled.
“You know how you keep telling me that you need a bass player?” He was beginning to catch on to what she was getting on about.
“Yeah, go on.” He replied.
“Well, Tyson here plays bass.” Tyson smiled, he didn’t quite know what he was getting himself into.
“Serious? You really play bass? Are you any good?” Nick asked. Tyson was going to have to lie more then just once to get into this band.
“Yeah, of course I play bass.” He replied. Nick smiled. He had finally found a bass player. Now his band could be complete and sound ten times better. Hopefully, in Nick’s eyes, having Tyson aboard would land his band better gigs then just the small town high school parties. Things were beginning to look up, but they looked even better when Nick spotted Lexie.
“Hey, Skye, fill him in. I’ve got something I’ve got to do. I’ll be back in a second.” With that said he headed over to Lexie. As usual she didn’t notice him until he tapped her gently on the shoulder. “Lexie?” She turned having heard her name. She smiled at him and her smile melted him. He was nothing more then jell-o now.
“Hey, you were pretty good tonight, but didn’t you know the grunge look went out like five years ago.” Nick smiled; nothing she could say to him would make him change his mind about her.
“Yeah, well it goes with the music style. So, did you enjoy the show?” It had taken almost all his courage just to come up to her. He really had to play his cards right to keep the conversation moving.
“It was all right. Not exactly my taste. I’m not really into the whole gay ass grunge band thing.” She replied, snottily and then walked off. It was one thing to insult his clothing but it was an entirely other thing to insult his music. He forgave her as quickly as humanly possible when she turned to him once more and smiled. He just merely smiled back. Skye was now standing beside him.
“Yeah, you diss me and your future bass player to talk to that bitch Lexie. Gosh, everyone knows the only reason she’s here tonight is to flirt with my brother who doesn’t give a shit about her. I can’t believe you sometimes, Nick.” She was genuinely upset.
“Skye, relax. I know you hate Lexie, but she’s really cool once you get to know her.” He replied, defending the girl he supposedly loved.
“Nick, would ya listen to yourself! She doesn’t even know that you exist!” Nick just shrugged off her statement.
“One day you’ll learn, Skye.” With that he kissed her on the forehead and walked off to join Mark and to get a hold of a Bud. Skye was upset and went off to find her brother so that she could get home and away from Nick for a while. How could he be so fucking stupid? She thought to herself, walking through the crowd of people. She really did care about him and she couldn’t wait for the day that he’d see Lexie for what she really was.
