“You have a patron,” Madame said, sticking her face into the room. Heather and Li looked at each other in confusion. Madame’s tone was never that grave and angry, unless… Understanding dawned, and the women groaned. They put down what they had been doing and stood up.
Sure enough, three young men burst through the door. The two on the ends supported the man in the middle, who was very obviously drunk.
“Ooooh, girls,” he slurred. “Therezaprettyone and, and, oooh, shezgotnicerack.” He giggled insanely.
“Yeah,” one guy said, grinning devilishly. “And they’re just for you.”
The drunk guy tried to look serious. “They say I’mmm sehxy onda interrrrnet, yaknow.” Li and Heather said nothing and kept smiling. “Youthink they’ll takeder clozeoff fer me?” he whispered loudly.
His buddy on the left laughed. “Dude, they’ll do whatever you want.”
The drunk guy suddenly turned pale. Li grabbed a small trashcan and put it under his face, but just a second too late. He passed out as the guys supporting him made disgusted faces. Heather directed them to lay him on the veiled bed in the back, and both of them wiped their hands on their shirt almost like they were wiping their hands clean of the man on the bed.
“Well, we’re out of here,” one cheerfully said. “His girlfriend’s a frigid little bitch, so when he wakes up, do us all a favor and show him a good time.”
They turned and left, and the women sank into overstuffed chairs with a sigh. “Great,” Li said sarcastically, “just what I wanted. A drag and drop.”
Heather grinned. “Hey, it’s not so bad – at least we have free time until he wakes up!”
Josh came to very slowly, but he didn’t open his eyes right away. His head felt like someone had been beating on it with a steel hammer, and something told him that if he opened his eyes he’d just explode.
He felt the softest sheets he’d ever been on, and realized that he heard the voices of women in the room. Two women. And they were talking about – oh God, they were talking about sex right there in front of him. He didn’t consider himself a prude by any means, but he just really didn’t wanna hear two women giving each other tips on positions right now. Ugh.
Josh sat up slowly, his head cradled in his hands. He moaned at the pain as the jackhammer beat faster, and the women’s voices suddenly became very quiet. Gentle hands suddenly stroked his hair and his back like a mother’s to a child.
“Are you okay?” one voice whispered.
“I’ll get you some Tylenol and go ask the bartender what we should give you,” said the other voice, who gave him one last reassuring pat on the back and left.
“Ahh, fuck, where am I?” he said, his eyes still closed. “Whose hotel room is this? ‘Cuz I know it’s not mine.”
“Well, the voice whispered, “you’re, uh, um… definitely not in Kansas anymore.”
He rubbed his temples. “That doesn’t help.”
“Okay, well,” the voice stumbled, “you’re in Beijing.”
“I know that,” Josh said, quickly becoming vexed.
“Thank God,” the woman said with relief. “Li’s back. She’ll tell you.”
He finally opened his eyes, and he discovered that he was on a platform bed covered with luxurious ivory sheets. In front of him knelt two women, both with concern written all over their faces. One was obviously Chinese, with deep brown eyes and long hair that was as black as onyx. The other had a pale, peaches and cream complexion with waves of blonde hair. They were both beautiful.
“Li,” the blonde one said, “I explained everything to the last drag and drop. This one’s yours.”
Li took a deep breath. “Two of your friends got you ridiculously drunk and left you here, betting that you’d freak out when you woke up. We call this a drag and drop. Thank God, it doesn’t happen often. But, yeah… you’re gonna want to kill your friends here in a minute.”
Josh was confused. “Why?”
Li and Heather exchanged glances. “Ever seen Moulin Rouge?”
“Of course. What’s that got to do with this?”
“Well, you know Nicole Kidman’s character Satine, and what her job was?”
He shrugged. “Yeah, she was a courtesan.”
Li just sighed and looked at him in response.
“Pull the pin, throw it, and the grenade hits in 5… 4… 3… 2…” Heather said quietly.
Josh glanced from Li to Heather, and suddenly realization dawned. His eyes got extremely wide, and he drew the sheets up around him and scooted back on the bed. “You’re… you’re… oh my God, they left me in a… Fuck!”
Li grinned, arched an eyebrow and opened her mouth, but Heather jabbed her in the stomach with an elbow. “Yes, you’re in a brothel. The best one in the world, actually, and I’m not just saying that. You still have all your clothes on, we didn’t peek at you, and the worst thing that happened while you were passed out is that Li cheated at poker.”
“Did not,” Li muttered.
“So relax. Nothing happened. We would never do anything to a sleeping or drunk man.”
“Unless he was narcoleptic,” Li said seriously. Heather struggled to keep a straight face, but it didn’t work, and both women snorted and giggled.
Josh was not amused. Here he was in a friggin’ brothel, and they’re cracking jokes. He glared at them.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” waved Li. “Look, your clothes are a bit… nasty. Apparently whatever you drank didn’t agree with you. So why don’t you head for the bathroom and take a quick shower, and we’ll get you fresh clothes.”
He gave them a look that loudly shouted “I don’t trust this”.
Heather rolled her eyes. “Nobody’s gonna peek or follow you in, and the clothes we’ll get are kinda like scrubs. Just more comfy. It wasn’t your choice to get sent in here, and we know that. We’re just trying to help you. That’s all.”
Josh let go a little of the sheets and narrowed his eyes. “Nobody’s gonna look? You swear?”
“We promise,” they said in unison.
Li left to get a fresh change of clothes for him, and Josh turned his attention to Heather. “Nobody’s going to know I was here, right? Because I really can’t let-“
“No,” Heather said, smiling. “Nobody will know. I wasn’t kidding when I said that this is the best brothel in the world. It looks like a tall office building, and the only people who get past the guards are the people who are on the guest list. And if you get in, you’re either very famous or very rich. They have an arrangement with the Beijing police. Anyone who has a camera within 100 feet of this place gets shot on sight. No paparazzi.”
He stared in shock. “Really? Shot?”
“Yep. It’s because of our clientele. None of them can afford to be seen here.”
“Do you guys keep, uh, busy, or is this just, yknow…”
Heather smiled again. His naivete was adorable. “We’re always busy. 12 floors of busy. People come here from all over the world for different reasons. Some want the obvious. Some want to feel powerful. Some want to get out anger. A lot of them come here just to talk, believe it or not. We’re not allowed to leave the building, so we usually don’t know who the hell they are, and they love it.”
“People actually come here just to talk?”
“Mmm hmm. We have every kind of woman imaginable, and we all have our specialties. And although we’re all trained in how to give pleasure, there are girls here whose specialties have nothing at all to do with sex.”
“So what’s your specialty, then?”
Heather grinned widely and patted him on the knee. “Nothing you need to know right now,” she said with a wink.
Li came through the door carrying towels and folded white clothing, and she was chatting amiably with a cute brunette. Josh drew in a sharp breath, and Li laughed. “Don’t worry, hon. We had Yakko and Dot there, but we were missing Wakko here. She’s with us.”
“Dammit, when do I get to be Dot?” said the brunette, grinning.
“When you pull your head out.”
The new girl giggled. “The contortionist’s that way, babe.” She fixed her grin on Josh. “Hey, wanna see a hooker jump?” She quickly goosed Li, who yelped and hopped a little in surprise. Li wasn’t the only one surprised; Josh had gone back to a shocked stare.
“Geez, Jen, will you tone it down?” Heather said reprovingly. “The guy’s gonna give himself an ulcer if he gets any more shocks today.”
“Please forgive me,” Jen said. “Too much sugar.”
Josh relaxed a tiny bit as Li handed him the pile of linen. He nervously headed for the bathroom and entered after giving a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure nobody was following him.
As they heard the sounds of water falling to the shower floor, the three women relaxed together on the huge bed.
“Damn,” Li said quietly. “I wish that one had come in willingly.”
Heather frowned in thought. “I would never want to pull something on someone and have them regret it later, but… maybe, if we play our cards right, he’ll be willing on his own to find out what our specialty is. No tricks from us, though.”
“Looks like he needs it, too,” Jen added. The other two nodded in agreement.
The first ten minutes that he’d been in the shower, he’d barely noticed the water. He spent it listening for a telltale creak in the door or whispering, or maybe even the mechanical whirring of a video camera’s movement. After that, the heightened senses brought on by nerves and fear started to wear out, and the warmth of the water began to soak in.
He let out a deep breath and let himself just think. Li was right – he was going to murder his friends when he got home. He was going to chop them up into little tiny pieces, balls first, and THEN murder them.
At least the ladies he’d been stuck with were nice. He couldn’t be completely sure that they hadn’t peeked or something while he was out, but the more that he thought about it, the more sure he was that they didn’t. For one thing, he had thrown up all over his shirt, and for another thing, he was pretty sure that they had no idea who he was.
He snorted. There were three prostitutes – excuse me, courtesans - out there who were more honorable than 95 percent of the people at his record company. Go figure.
He got done, toweled off, and put the clothes on. Once again, they were right. They looked like scrubs, but they were made of very soft, thick cotton, and they were amazingly comfortable. Without thinking, he checked himself out in the mirror to make sure that he looked halfway decent, and then pushed the bathroom door open with a lot less apprehension than he thought he’d have.
“Well, there you are!” said Jen cheerily. “We were beginning to think you’d drowned.”
“Naah,” Josh said, grinning easily. “I did need that, though. I feel much better. And thanks for the clothes, Li.”
Li raised an appreciative eyebrow. “No prob. And you do seem to be feeling much better.” Josh just grinned widely in response. “Now sit your butt down. We’ve got an idea for you.”
“And it doesn’t even require a saddle,” Jen piped up.
“Shut up,” Heather said, elbowing Jen.
“ANYWAYS,” Li said, eyeballing the other two girls, “we know how you can get your friends back.”
Looking serious for the first time, Jen spoke. “You have to realize something first, though. We are not paid at all, ever. So we get nothing out of this idea. Nothing at all.”
Josh nodded. “Go on.”
“It’s quite different for your friends, though,” she said with a mischievous smile. “They get billed in fifteen minute increments. You see where we’re going with this?”
Heather leaned forward and chuckled. “Hit them where it hurts – their wallet.”
“So stay with us,” Li said, smiling. “We have the entire floor, so there are plenty of empty, furnished rooms you can have. The kitchen can make you whatever you want. We have books, music, one of the Playstation 3s that won’t even be released until next year, and we know every card game known to man. And,” she said with a backward glance at Heather, “I do not cheat!”
“Yesshedoes,” coughed Heather.
“Allthetime,” coughed Jen.
“And we play a mean game of Truth or Dare,” said Heather, grinning slyly. “But you wouldn’t be the type who’d be up for that.”
“It’s okay,” Li said, patting Josh on the knee. “We understand. Some people are just…”
“…Safe,” Jen finished.
Josh arched an eyebrow. “Oh, so you think I’m some Boy Scout. Totally unadventurous.”
Heather plopped down on the bed and smiled up to him. “Hey, it’s alright! If that’s how you are, then that’s just how you are!”
“We see it all the time,” said Li reassuringly.
“I am not a Boy Scout!” Josh said indignantly.
“Which medal does he get for coming here?” asked Heather with a grin.
“I dunno, but the badge has cherries on it…” Jen joked, and all three women exploded into laughter.
“Fine!” yelled Josh. “I’ll do it, and I’ll kick your asses at it.”
“Oh, good,” Jen purred. “We can have fun with this.” They all clambered up onto the bed, making a circle.
“I call first,” said Heather. “Clockwise. And house rules apply.”
Li smiled dangerously. “We have two rules. One: anything goes. Two: You can pass if you’d like, but if you do, you have to do something that the rest of the group decides on. And it’ll most likely be something you’ve never done before. So I wouldn’t pass if I were you.”
“Alright! My turn. Josh,” Heather said, grinning, “truth or dare?”
Josh stared her down. “Truth.” Jen giggled, and josh could swear that he heard “chickenshit” come from somewhere.
“How often do you… let’s say… play solo?”
Josh was confused. “Play solo?”
“Play pocket pool,” said Li.
“Spank the-“
“Okay, okay! I got it!” said Josh, turning a bit red. “Well, um… I’m on tour a lot, and, uh… my girlfriend doesn’t really like to, um, uh…” He sighed. “A lot more than I’d like.”
“My turn!” said Li. “Jen!”
Jen folded her arms. “It’s a bit too early in the game for me to start taking your dares. Truth.”
Li leaned forward and gave her an evil smile. “What were you yelling so loudly the other night with that bald guy?”
Jen put her face in her hands. “I should’ve shut up and taken the dare…” She sighed and sat up straight. “He wanted me to be his mommy. I’m not going into any other detail. Don’t make me. Just when you think you’ve seen it all…” She shuddered.
Heather made a disgusted face. “I think I know what you mean. Did it involve…?”
Jen stared at her like she was communicating something. “Yes.”
Heather groaned loudly and flopped back onto the mattress. “Neeeext!”
Jen grinned. “Moving on. Josh. You know the drill.”
He gave her a direct, challenging stare. “Dare.”
She crawled forward until they were nose to nose on the bed. “You’re gonna regret that.” She backed up a little and smiled. “You are going to go down to the third floor and tell the first woman you see that you lied yesterday.” The other two girls immediately burst into hysterical laughter as Josh gave Jen a very confused look. “Come on, gorgeous,” she said with a wink. “Get moving.”
Josh was still completely puzzled, and the three women led him to an elevator giggling. Someone goosed him on the ride down, but when he turned back to see who had done it, all three had completely innocent looks on their faces.
When the elevator doors opened, he saw what looked like a hotel hallway, and they stepped out. A few women milled about, but there didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary about them.
“Come on, go ahead,” Jen whispered. Someone gave him a light push.
One woman stopped and started laughing. “You three. There’s only one reason you would be down here. I’m off duty!”
“It’ll just take a second, Nikki,” Jen pouted. “You know we love you.”
Nikki sighed. “Fine.”
Josh approached her timidly with wide eyes. He had no idea what to expect. “I, uh, I’m supposed to tell you that I lied yesterday.”
From out of nowhere, the woman spun around and kicked his legs, making him painfully sink to his knees. She grabbed a handful of the hair at the back of his head and jerked it back. “You did what?” she snarled.
“I – I – I really didn’t lie, I swear…”
She jerked him up to a standing position. “Don’t you lie to me,” she growled. She reached down between them and put the front of his pants in a vise grip. “I don’t like to be lied to.”
“Alright, alright, I lied my ass off, and I’m fuckin’ sorry, just let me go!”
Nikki grinned, let his crotch go, and gave him a kiss. “Sorry, babe. I owed her a favor. You’re cute. If you ever happen to need…”
Josh pushed away, wide eyed. “NO.”
They got back onto the elevator. The girls quietly giggled, but Josh was silent. When they reached the room, Jen ran out in front of Josh and stopped him. She put her arms around his neck and smiled.
“Aww, I’m sorry if that was too rough, I really am,” she said. “It was all in good fun. I didn’t mean to upset you.”
Josh grabbed her waist and pulled her to him very roughly. He put his face so close to hers that their lips were about to meet. “You. Are. So. Dead,” he whispered, and then pushed her away with a smile.
Li and Heather catcalled as they both walked back to the bed.
“My turn,” he said slowly. “And I’m defining it whether you like it or not. All of you. Truth.” Heather, Li and Jen glanced at each other, but they didn’t say no. “You’ve been dancing around the topic of your ‘specialty’ or whatever all this time. I wanna know what it is.”
“Alright,” Li said. “We’re teachers.”
“Teachers? What do you mean?”
“Sometimes someone will come to us because they feel that their knowledge is a bit inadequate. Sometimes they want to learn how to please their lover better. A lot of them are the sons of very powerful people. They get sent here as a graduation gift, and we teach them what we know.”
Josh looked from one girl to the next. “So you guys are Sex 101 or something like that.”
“Sometimes,” Heather said shrugging. “Sometimes someone wants to be schooled in more adventurous things. Our job is to know all of it.”
“We’re like a walking, talking Kama Sutra,” Jen said, grinning.
All Josh could muster was a surprised expression and a “Well. Okay.”
“My turn again! Josh! I’m picking on you again, duckie.”
Josh snorted. “I’m not doing another dare until my knees stop throbbing. Truth.”
“When you got dropped off, one of your friends said something about your girlfriend, well, not treating you right.”
He blinked. “They did?”
“Well, actually, they called her a ‘frigid bitch’,” Li said helpfully.
Josh’s expression darkened.
“Aww, come on now,” Heather said. “We’re still women, and maybe we could help you out a bit. It’s not like we’re gonna leave and tell someone or something.”
Jen nodded. “Just think of us as Dear Abby… but naked, and with toys.”
That made him crack a small smile. “Alright, what the hell.” He took in a deep breath. “My girlfriend is a very pretty actress. We’ve been together for about two years. And I like her and all, but…” He spread his hands to show that he didn’t know what to say.
“But something isn’t right,” Heather said.
“Yeah. Sometimes she acts like she completely loves me, and sometimes she acts like she’d rather be getting a root canal.”
“Are you more famous than your girlfriend is?”
Josh looked down. “Yeah.”
“And would I be right if I guessed that the loving side of her comes out when there are cameras around?”
He twiddled his thumbs. “Yeah.”
“No physical affection, right?”
“Right.”
Li sighed. “Josh, I don’t think we need to tell you what’s going on or what you need to do.”
He swished his foot. “I know.”
“Then do what you need to do,” Jen said softly. “Life’s too short to live unhappily.” She got quieter. “We know better than anyone.”
Josh looked up. “Do you guys actually like what you do?”
The three shared glances again, and this time Li spoke. “I love it when it’s just the three of us. These are my best friends. And every once in a blue moon, we get someone in here who really wants to learn because he completely loves his girlfriend and wants to please her. That I don’t mind. But everything else…” She shook her head.
“We didn’t ask to join this business,” Heather said. “We’ve been in it since, well… it’s been a while. None of us have ever been able to get out. And now that we’re here, we have no chance of ever getting out again. Hell, we don’t even get to see the sun anymore. So trust us. Don’t get sucked into something that drains your soul. You go live, and just promise that you’ll bounce back here every once in a while to talk.”
A look of pity crossed Josh’s face. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered.
Jen reached up and stroked his cheek. “It’s not your fault, sweetheart,” she said, smiling gently. “And before you start worrying about it, we don’t mind having you here. We like you. So don’t worry. You’re fine. Just fine.”
Josh blushed.
“Well, gee, Heather,” Li said, grinning, “thanks for the buzzkill question.”
Heather laughed and hugged her. “No problem, babe. Now! My turn again.” She shot a glance at the other two, who nodded in approval of something unsaid. “Josh. Since you defined yours, I’m going to define mine. You’ve been dared to let us teach you something. Think of it as a gift.”
“Uhh, but I’m sure I, uh, have it all down pat.”
The women giggled. Li moved up toward him and took his hand. “Haven’t you ever heard the expression that when you think you know it all, you’re nowhere near it?”
“And where does that leave you three walking Kama Sutras?” Josh snorted.
“We’re the exception to the rule, my dear,” Li said. “Now, you need a quick assessment.”
“Assessment??”
“Yup. Kiss me.”
“Kiss you?” Josh said, bewildered.
Li sighed. “Yeah. You see these things?” she said, poking his lips. “You pucker them up, and then you put them against mine, and then…”
“I know how to kiss!” Josh said indignantly.
Li stuck her face into his. “Then prove it.”
Never one to turn down a challenge, Josh moved in as quickly as a bolt of lightning and kissed her. It was a bit rough and angry until he remembered that he was kissing a lithe, beautiful young woman who professed to know how to please him in ways he could only imagine. It got quite a bit easier kissing her after that, and composed thought gave way to baser images.
Li broke the kiss off and gave him a sultry smile. “We’re going to teach you how to drive a woman absolutely mad. They’ll be knocking down your door in droves by the time we’re done with you.”
“Hmm. Well, sorry, ladies, but they kinda already are.”
Jen smirked. “And why, exactly, do they?”
Josh cleared his throat and sang. After five minutes, the song ended, and he opened his eyes to find the three women leaning forward, hanging on the fading reverberations of the last note.
“Wow,” Heather breathed. “That was…”
“Incredible…” said Jen quietly.
“Honey, if you’re anything like that in bed, then we give up. There’s nothing left to teach you. I mean, damn, boy,” Li said in amazement.
“Thanks,” he said, grinning.
“Well, now!” Heather said brightly. “Lesson time. You’re not ready, though.”
Josh shot her a confused look.
She grinned devilishly. “We may have the paper, but your pencil’s not out.”
He turned red and groaned. “I can NOT believe you just said that.”
“You’re completely straight, right?”
“Yes!!”
Heather turned to Li and Jen. “Then there’s one thing that never fails to work. Girls?”
The other two grinned, got off the bed, and stood in front of him. They smiled at Josh and then at each other. And before Josh knew it, the two women were passionately kissing each other. He stared openmouthed while they became a melding of fair skin and long hair.
Heather moved up behind him and ran a hand down his chest. “So did that work?” she breathed into his ear.
He could only swallow and nod.
The kiss ended and Jen walked up to him. She crawled back up on the bed and sat on his lap. “The first and most important lesson – tease her. Mercilessly. Make her beg for you. The longer you can keep from giving her what she wants, the better it’ll be later. Now… show me what I mean.”
That kiss had put Josh well beyond the point of coherent thought, and he simply complied. He reached up and hooked his fingers in her hair and drew her in for a hungry kiss. She moved her lips across his jawline and up to his ear, and whispered. “Use your hands more,” she said softly, “and don’t go straight for the usual places. Tease me.”
He trailed his fingers down the nape of her neck and down her back, and quickly wrenched her shirt off. Still pressing his lips against hers, he put his hands near the low waist of her skirt and traced upwards slowly.
His fingers found the bottom curves of her breasts and moved slowly across them. He began to lightly kiss down her neck at the same time as his fingers inched their way up towards the tips of her breasts. Jen parted her lips, breathing heavily and fully expecting, wanting him to play there, but he retreated, roughly sliding his palms back down her abdomen. “Oh, very good move,” she breathed. “Very good.”
She lifted herself off of his lap just enough to swing one leg around so that she straddled him. “If I told you that I wanted you – wanted you badly – what would you do?”
He put his hands on her waist and pushed her backwards onto the bed. Kneeling, he shoved the hem of her skirt up. She smiled as she watched him discover that she wasn’t wearing anything underneath. Josh shoved his palms up her thighs and wrenched them apart. He took one finger and lightly traced up to where her thighs met without touching the tiny bit of flesh that ached to be touched. She moaned and twisted, gritted her teeth and arched her back, but he didn’t give in.
She finally sat up and pushed him away with both hands. With a growl, she yanked her skirt up and jumped off of the bed, stomping past the other women and muttering curses. She left the room with a loud slam of the door.
“What did I do?” Josh said, frowning.
Li smiled and clapped slowly. “You got an A, that’s what you did. You teased her so well she’s cussing. Pretty good.”
“Fuck, she’s not the only one who got teased,” he muttered under his breath.
“Now lesson number two starts,” Heather said with a sly smile as she climbed up onto the bed. “Need any help getting ready for it?” she said with a grin as she slowly unbuttoned her blouse.
Josh tried to say no, but nothing came out.
She crawled up toward him, her tousled blonde hair falling in her eyes as she pulled his shirt up over his head. “Not bad,” she murmured as she eyed him appreciatively. “I love this,” she said, running her fingers over the dark hair on his chest.
Heather moved to straddle him like Jen had, but turned around so her bare back was flush with the skin of his torso. She interlaced her fingers with his and drew them around her waist. “Now apply lesson number one,” she whispered, “but do it gently. Slowly. Lovingly. And talk to me.”
“Talk to you how?” he breathed, intoxicated by the smell of her hair and the feel of her skin.
“Talk to me like you’d talk to a lover. Tell me what you love. Start at my head and work your way down. Use your hands and your lips to talk as well as your voice. Whisper. Keep your lips near my ear.”
He untangled his fingers from hers and stroked her hair back from her temples. “Your hair’s so gorgeous,” he whispered as he softly swept the strands across her shoulders. He placed a soft kiss where her jaw met her ear. “And you smell so good… so… I dunno, girly.”
Heather giggled. “Let’s try another adjective there, shall we?”
His hands ran down her arms. “I don’t know exactly what that smell is, but I could breathe it in all day. And your skin… God, so perfect. Smooth. Like silk,” he whispered into her ear as he brought his fingers back up her arms and slid them up her neck. “Beautiful face,” he murmured. “Like an angel.” More soft kisses down her neck. Heather tilted her head back and sighed.
“So perfect,” he whispered hoarsely as his hands traced her collarbone, and she felt the heat from his fingertips travel to the soft weights of her breasts and lift them. This time he didn’t avoid it – he gingerly rolled both tips between his thumbs and index fingers, and Heather drew in a sharp breath at the intensity of it.
“I want you,” he breathed quietly into her ear as one hand snaked its way downwards. Heather opened her eyes and gasped at the sensation of his fingers finding their target.
“Li, please,” Heather moaned. “Please sit this one out?”
“You just won your second A, Josh,” Li said, smiling.
“At least let me help,” Heather whined. “He fucking knows enough!”
“I can’t take much more of this, Li,” Josh said quietly.
“Alright. I think you’ve earned yourself enough of a passing grade. Ladies?”
Heather smiled and pushed Josh down on the bed. She got behind his head, got on her knees, and then pulled him up so that his shoulders and head were resting on her thighs. Jen had come back some time ago. She positioned herself on her stomach, almost perpendicular to him, holding herself up with one hand that draped over his chest.
Li finally got on the bed with the other two women. She very quickly disrobed and straddled Josh at his knees, pulling on the drawstring to the white cotton pants that were now very clearly showing his arousal.
She stuck her long fingers underneath the waistband and pulled it down, moving the pants down to his knees. “Now you just lay back and let us take care of you,” she purred. “This I’ll enjoy.”
“No teasing,” he panted.
“No. No teasing.”
Almost simultaneously, the women moved. Josh found Jen’s lips against his, Heather’s hands against his chest, and Li very slowly easing herself onto him. The full-body sensation was almost too much to handle.
His mouth still at Jen’s, he moaned as Li began to move her body ever so slowly up and down against him. Josh’s hands grabbed Li’s backside and squeezed tightly as the rhythm began to accelerate. Fingers stroked and pulled at him on his chest. A tongue hungrily swirled against his. The goddess on top of him began to moan and swing her head from side to side, her onyx hair brushing his muscled sides. Friction, heat, and energy began to build from all points in his body.
Lips were now brushing, sucking, biting his neck and shoulders, and wordless, guttural sounds came from his mouth. He could feel the heat of the Sahara. Every cell, every atom in his body was alive, crackling with energy and an incredible, delicious pressure that threatened to swallow him. He was stone. He was rain. He was Icharus, flying too close to the sun. And then, as a scream, a prayer to some unknown god emanated from him –
Supernova. Universes being born. The blinding brilliance of a thousand suns.
When his tentative grasp on the stars finally faded, he lay breathing, feeling warm bodies against his, and hearing nothing but the blissful, calming sound of the beating of many hearts. The soft rhythm lulled him to sleep.
Several hours later, the three women woke, but a body was missing from the entanglement of limbs. Li, Heather and Jen sat up slowly, their usual smiles missing and their faces empty.
“I guess he had to go,” Heather said quietly. “It’s too bad. I liked him. I was hoping he’d stay longer.”
Faces were blank and cast downward, and the silence roared. They’d never shared their desperation about their lives with anyone other than each other, and certainly never to a patron before.
“What did we think was going to happen?” Jen whispered. “It’s not like he was going to go running off with three call girls.”
“God, I wish that he could have…” Li said softly.
Silently, they got up and began to clean the room. The linens on the bed were changed, which was a hard task for them. The ivory silk held echoes of the first man in many years who had actually seemed to care for their welfare.
Wordless communication passed between the trio, and the sheets were gently folded and placed in a trunk that held the girls’ few personal belongings. They desperately needed to hold on to a link to the kindness that he had shown them. It would give them hope that they could somehow get out of being forced to give away their bodies. Last night was the first time in a long time that they had given themselves willingly. And if he ever returned, which they prayed that he did, they would do it again. And again.
They finished and sat staring at the floor, not wanting to acknowledge the elephant in the room. They knew that sooner or later, Madame would open the door smiling, leading yet another man into their midst. Most likely, he’d be a sixtyish, fat, bald American businessman who wanted to get what his nagging, aging wife refused to give him anymore. They instinctively knew that every time they heard the turning of the door’s handle, their breath would catch in their throat and they’d pray to whatever god was listening that the man led in would be Josh. Unfortunately, they also knew that the held breath would be let out in a sigh of disappointment.
The “sooner or later” proved to be sooner – they heard footsteps down the hall, but they weren’t the soft footsteps of Madame. They were hard, angry footsteps, and a man’s voice shouted irritably.
The door slammed open, and an enraged Chinese man pounded his way into the room. He let out a string of undecipherable syllables and pointed at them.
“Li,” Heather said, fear plainly in her voice, “what did we do?”
“He wants us to get dressed and pack our belongings right away,” she said shakily.
“Oh God, not another transfer, please, not another transfer…” Jen said hoarsely. Heather put her arms around Jen and clutched her tightly.
Another long string of Mandarin followed. “He says that he is an agent of the brothel’s owner and that we are to obey him right away or face the consequences.”
It wasn’t a hard task, considering that all that they owned was in that one small trunk. They quickly dressed and stood at the ready, chins raised defiantly in the hopes that this short, loud man wouldn’t see the fear there.
He barked for them to follow him, and the three women held each other’s hands for dear life as the elevator descended. They were greeted with a sight they hadn’t seen in years – the stark, cold lobby of the brothel. And close, so very close, the front doors and the knowledge that they would never pass through them again unless it was as chattel.
The short man yelled for a guardsman to follow, and the three women were pushed through the great oak and glass doors, and the guardsman trained his gun on them. They huddled and whimpered as the man said something angrily and loudly.
Jen and Heather traded confused looks as Li began to loosen and stare. The confusion just got worse as they watched the man turn and stomp back into the building. The guardsman remained.
“Li, what –“
“He said our debts have been paid,” Li breathed. “We’re free. Completely free.”
Both of the other women stood silently in shock.
“He said we have to leave right away and never come back. And if we do, or if we talk about this place, we will be shot.”
“Free…” Heather whispered.
“Oh, God,” Jen said hoarsely. “What do we do now? We have nowhere to go, no money, nothing to eat…” There was no good answer. They simply held on to each other as if they would blow away with the wind if one let go.
“Walk!” the guardsman yelled.
So the women did the only thing they could do. Without shoes, and with the balmy wind whipping their hair, they walked away from a place that had been their life for many, many years. They walked into the uncertainty of the sun’s light.
After a while, the building grew small and they finally approached a busy road. By then the three were silently crying for things lost, things gained and things yet unknown. Cars sped by, and well-dressed pedestrians chatted on their cell phones, oblivious to the black hole of fear that threatened to swallow the women whole.
Not knowing what else to do, they sat on the sidewalk and watched as the happy people went in and out of the shops lining the street, carelessly swinging their purchases. One woman struggled under the weight of many bags; a chauffeur helped her dump them into the trunk of her parked limousine. A similarly loaded man did the same.
The very pretty, petite brunette slipped into the limo’s back seat as the man, obscured by the open trunk, spoke with the chauffeur. Heather squinted and slowly stood up.
“Get up,” she whispered. “Girls, GET UP!”
The other two stood uncertainly, but when they followed Heather’s line of vision, their hearts stopped beating. The trunk shut, and standing there comfortably clad in jeans and a t shirt was Josh.
He moved to open the other door of the limo, but stopped suddenly. Standing across the road from him was a triumvirate of beautiful women – a blonde, a brunette, and an exotic Chinese woman.
He ran across the street, almost causing an accident. Breathlessly, he finally reached the other side and leaned over with his hands on his thighs. “What – when did they let you out?”
“About an hour ago,” said Li, quietly. “But we don’t know where to go and what to do. We have nothing.”
Josh had glanced downward and spotted the red, raw feet that they had gotten from walking over uneven, rocky gravel. “Goddammit, they didn’t even give you shoes,” he said angrily. “Not to mention, they were supposed to call me.”
Heather frowned. “Call you?”
“Yeah, they said they’d call me when you were ready to go so that I could pick you up. I was just in that store with my friend Lucia buying you all clothes, because I knew that you didn’t really have any.”
“You were buying us clothes?” Heather whispered incredulously.
“Hold on, I don’t get it – why were they supposed to call you?” asked Jen, trying to squelch the rising hope within her.
“Because I paid your contracts off,” he said, smiling. “I got up before you did and went to find whoever was in charge. Boy, was he pissed, too, but when I offered him double what his asking price was, he agreed real fast. I wanted to have everything ready for you before they brought you out, but it looks like they didn’t do what I asked.”
“So we belong to you now,” Li said in clarification.
Josh blinked in disbelief. “Hell no! You belong to nobody! You’re free, just like you should be.”
“But – but – what are we supposed to do now?” Heather stammered.
He smiled. “I need some assistants. Like ‘get me some coffee and go over today’s schedule’ kind of assistants. And I was hoping that you might want the job.”
They didn’t know what to say. Their limbs seemed frozen; each woman was absolutely sure that someone had put something funny in the water and that they would wake up any minute now.
The limousine had turned around and pulled up to the sidewalk. The chauffeur opened the door, and Josh hopped in. “Come on,” he said, grinning. “You’ve all got nice, cushy hotel rooms, and there’s even a spa in there. Let’s go get you three taken care of.”
As each woman entered the limousine in awe, they hesitated and gave one backwards glance towards the prison that they had left. And, each in turn, they smiled and felt a new strength well up within them from the knowledge that no one could ever own them again.
Li was the last. She stared defiantly at the pinprick on the horizon that was the brothel.
“C’mon, Li, before I’m eighty!” Josh said jokingly from the car. He got partially out of the car and stretched his hand out toward her.
With one last triumphant smile in her former prison’s direction, Li placed her small hand into his large, warm one and stared into the shining, deep brown wells of her future.
