Skye, the Last Prince of the Vampires
Chapter One: The Rescue, and Strange Encounters
Skye smirked to himself as he walked towards the courtroom. There was a trial going on, but he did not really give a damn what it was about. The only thing that Skye wanted to do was cause a little bit of chaos, and now he knew how to do such a thing. Now, the human pop icon Michael Jackson was on trial, and Skye would soon put a stop to this nonsense. He was a Vampire, yes, but nothing stopped him from walking in the light. This was because he was a day walker.
Just then, Skye saw the men standing at the door. They were the typical image of the bad police officer stereotyped on what the humans called a television. Since the two overweight police were only concerned about stuffing fluffy doughnuts down their throats, Skye knew that this would be an easy kill, but he could smell the sugary blood from where he stood, and he knew that he wouldn’t like it one bit. Nonetheless, business was business. Whether Skye liked to kill the junk food eaters or not, the job was necessary.
In a flash, the young Vampire was upon one of the men, his razor sharp fangs extending as he brutally bit down into one mortal’s neck. Skye gagged on the sugar in the officer’s blood, which really was far too sweet from all the doughnuts and a slight hint of chocolate, but he continued until the man was completely dead. He repeated the process on the other police officer and then wiped away the blood from his lips, making a disgusted face. Once he was finished, his fangs retracted back into a pair of normal-sized canine teeth, if a bit on the pointy side.
After the two police officers were disposed of, Skye summoned a burst of power from within to create the speed required to get into the courtroom. He managed this easily, slipping through the door unnoticed as one of Michael Jackson’s fans slipped out the door, and relaxed his grip on the burst of power, allowing it to sink back under his skin. It was not long before there was a scream from the other room, and Skye smirked. Everything was going according to plans. He would rescue the mortal known as Michael Jackson, and he would kill anyone who got in his way. As if on cue, instant chaos erupted within the courtroom. People all ran over to the source of the scream, and were appalled by what they saw there. Some sick freak had drained and consumed the blood out of the police at the door! Skye only grinned to himself under his black hood.
Skye was very pleased with his accomplishment, and was quite amused with the human reactions. Everything was going according to his plans, and now the one thing left to do was to go and grab the human pop idol. He spotted Michael near a wooden desk, standing nervously and cringing in fear. Michael had no clue what was going on, because he had been sitting there the whole time. He could see a black-robed figure approaching him, but he did not dare to move because he was still on trial. The judge too was in a panic, dashing this way and that and trying to restore order to the courtroom. Amidst all this chaos, nobody else noticed the deathly pale, black-robed, hooded figure that was walking towards Michael, but Michael could clearly see him. Something just could not be right.
People dashed in front of him and around the room, occasionally blocking his view, but Skye admired the sight of the frightened man before him. All the vampires of his clan knew that Michael had a skin disease that would make him appear blotchy and infected with something contagious, but Skye could see no trace of it through the thick layer of cosmetics that Michael had to wear to cover the splotches. The result of the makeup was smooth and flawless white skin, but there was still a hint of a peach color in it, distinguishing the mortal‘s skin from the Vampire’s.
Michael’s hair was black as night, despite him being nearly forty-eight in mortal years. His eyebrows were arched in an odd fashion, but not unattractive, and were evenly spaced around the pale and unnaturally thin nose that Michael had given himself. The lips, however, were full and reddish in color, and looked very kissable. Lastly but surely not the least, Skye focused his own gaze on Michael’s brown eyes. Those dark and sexy eyes that were almost black in appearance seemed to call out to him and draw him closer like a moth to the flame of a candle, or in his case, a Vampire to blood. The dark eyelashes that framed them did nothing to alter their beauty. Now he was just dressed in a formal black suit, but Skye did not bother taking in the details of his clothing.
Skye reached out and grasped Michael’s wrists, causing the taller, older human to cry out in fright. Skye knew that his hands were deathly pale, ice cold, and had a grip like steel, but he also knew that Michael could not see who was underneath the hood and could not tell what was about to happen. There was, however, no time to lose, as Michael’s cry had alerted everyone that he was in danger, and a crowd of angry humans was approaching Skye, police in front with gleaming silver-toned guns in their hands. Skye swept the taller man off his feet and over his shoulder with lightning speed, and dashed from the courtroom with an evil and very pointy smirk on his face. He had accomplished what he’d set out to do, and his clan would be most pleased with his catch.
Outside, there was a group of six similarly dressed Vampires waiting for their leader to return. They smiled brightly as Skye approached them, and soon all seven of them began to run in great, leaping strides. Police came frantically running out the door to try to catch them, but it was no use. Mortal legs were simply no match for the much more powerful legs of a Vampire.
Michael could not believe the speed at which he was moving. Whoever these people were, they moving were far too quickly for them to be human. He let out a pained noise as the person carrying him ran roughly over a bump in the road, then closed his eyes and waited for the chaos to stop. The swift and furious pace soon eased into a smooth, slow rate of travel, and much to Michael’s surprise, the person carrying him was now singing one of his own songs, titled “You Are Not Alone,” in a sweet and melodious voice that carried on the wind. Hearing this song preformed so beautifully by another was soothing, and the cool breeze on his face was rather relaxing after breathing the air of a stuffy courtroom. The position he was in had also shifted at some point so that he was now cradled in this person’s arms. In addition, he could lift the hood if he wanted. If only he was not so relaxed…. If only he could fight back…. Michael closed his eyes and fell into sleep.
Michael awoke in the bedroom of somebody’s house, his eyes fluttering open slowly and his senses taking in the feel of satin against his cheek. He closed his eyes, wondering if it had all been a dream, and then realized that something was scratching terribly against his skin. A glance down at himself told him that this was not even his own bed, and since when did he wear a formal suit to bed anyways? As for the satin, it was more luxurious than anything he had ever had as bedding material. It was blood red in color, and it was very rich in contrast to his pale makeup-colored hand.
He sat up and saw that the quilt was black, and turned his head to see the black satin pillowcases that he had been resting against only a moment before. A look above him told him that he was in a king-sized four-poster bed that had a red velvet canopy above it, and red curtains all around him. The wooden posts, headboard, and footboard were made of rich mahogany wood, very expensive and hand constructed in appearance. Whoever owned this place was either very wealthy, or knew how to find and carve mahogany into furniture. Overall, the bed alone was breathtaking.
A pale figure with long, soft-looking red hair and snow-white skin suddenly poked his head through the drapes. The eyes of the figure were a pale silver-blue, and flashed in the dim light of the room. He was richly dressed in robes of sapphire blue and black velvet and Michael was startled when the image of a prince from the middle ages flashed into his mind. He did not have long to think about this, however, because the pale figure approached him and sat at the end of the bed he was laying on. There was something unnerving about all of this. Michael drew his knees up to his chest, and watched in silence as the figure turned his gaze upon him
“Do not be afraid of me, Michael. I shall not harm you.” The young man said softly; in a smooth and flowing voice that made Michael almost want to melt into the mattress. “I am Skye Silverstar. I rescued you from a very cruel fate.” The redhead reached out with a pale hand slowly, and then drew it back as though he was afraid to touch the human. His fingernails were rather long, and cut to a pointed shape, polished in black. Skye did not want to frighten the man even more so than he already was.
Michael, however, was not afraid. He reached out slowly and touched the pale hand, feeling smooth and soft flesh against his own. He was startled that one so pale could be so warm and healthy to the touch at the same time, and yet he was not that surprised. This man was much better than the one who had grabbed him with hands of ice. Somehow, Skye made Michael feel like he belonged in this odd little place. He felt strangely at peace, which was a surprise because of the recent past events. Something about Skye told him that he was safe.
“My prince,” a voice said softly. Another figure appeared at the gap in the curtains. He was not very tall, but it did not seem to matter one bit. “The federals are now looking for Michael Jackson… they are most concerned.” This figure had a soft, but clear voice. His long, shining white-blonde hair glowed like moonlight and his dark blue eyes shone like sapphires. He too was pale like death, and Michael was surprised. Not only were there two people like this, but each one also seemed to have great respect towards the other. The pale blonde-haired person then caught sight of Michael and gasped.
“Oh! I was wondering when I would actually get to see you in person. There were rumors flying around that you were here but I thought nothing of them!” Michael raised an eyebrow, and then the figure blushed. “Oh… how very rude of me not to introduce myself! I am Alexander Moonshadow… I have been working in Skye’s service ever since I was a very small boy, but I always loved your music… I used to listen with Skye… back when he was ill. It is an honor to meet a person with such a lovely voice, Mr. Jackson.” Alexander reached out his slender hand, with nails that were just as long as Skye’s, but painted silver. Michael shook it, his large, strong hand easily swallowing up the small and slender fingers of the pale youth. Both shared a small smile.
“I am very flattered by all of this attention that I am getting, but do call me Michael. You have no need for formalities, Alexander. I am not like the other celebrities out there,” Michael said with a smile, and Alexander nodded a bit, nodding furiously and stammering that it would not happen again. At this obvious sign of discomfort, Michael covered Alexander’s small shoulders with his hands, and pulled him into a hug to show that it was perfectly all right to be a little nervous. A shy smile from the youth was all that he needed to be reassured that the little blonde-haired man would be fine. As Michael let go of him, Skye cleared his throat, effectively grabbing both of their attentions.
“Alexander, do be a dear and fetch the rest of the clan for me? They must meet our honored guest.” Skye said softly, and then added in Alexander’s direction, “As for the federals... they can just come over here and bite me…. That is… if I don’t bite them first.” At this comment, Alexander let out a snicker, and Skye smiled at him, before continuing and gesturing towards Michael. “They’ve been harassing this poor soul for years for things that he’s never done. He is considered to be an outcast, just like each and every one of us was at one point.” Skye turned to Michael with a warm and friendly smile on his face. “What do you say? Do you want to be protected?”
Michael could hardly believe his ears. These people were going to protect him. There was only one thing to do, and that was to accept the protection offered to him. He smiled to Skye, and gave a slight nod. The pale man nodded, and then beckoned him to follow. Michael did not know about it yet, but this amazing adventure with the youthful man known as Skye Silverstar had only just begun.
Michael followed Skye and Alexander into a small circular chamber of black stone. There were a dozen chairs set around the room, three to each quarter, and carved out of stone. All had thick, soft, plush black velvet cushions on them. A thirteenth chair stood in the middle of the room, it had a higher back and rotated freely with the powers that Skye and the others of his clan had. It was somewhat like a council room, and currently, the other chairs around the room held at least eleven hooded people. There only was one chair not occupied by someone, which Skye indicated that Michael should seat himself in and get comfortable. Michael nodded to the pale man and took his seat, not knowing what was to come. He was surprised to find himself sinking into it comfortably, even though a strange room and even stranger people surrounded him. Everyone wore black robes, and had the same long fingernails as Skye and Alexander did. The nails of the people were painted silver, white, gold, red, violet, or black. Hoods covered their faces, but there was a glitter of eyes, reassuring Michael that these were not monsters, but friends.
One of the figures rose from its seat and approached him, or so he thought. He was about to get up out of his chair and offer a handshake when the figure spoke not to him, but to Skye, who was standing nearby. The voice, obviously male, spoke in a soft, barely audible voice, though Michael did catch a “greetings, my brother.” The figure backed away slowly, and returned to his chair. After this, Skye clapped his hands to get the attention of everybody in the room. At first, nobody paid him any attention.
“May I have your attention please, everyone?” Skye asked when the people did not settle into their seats. Everyone sat then, and he continued. “I am sure you are all aware of our special guest, and now it is time to introduce yourselves to him. I pray that you will be respectful, and will not try to harm him.” With this, he indicated that the person nearest to him should start. The figure rose, and removed his hood. His pale-as-death skin was a stark contrast to the thick raven hair that fell to his tailbone in a smooth waterfall, and the sparkling emerald eyes that shone out from beneath thick, dark eyelashes and finely arched brows. He stood at a height of six feet and three inches tall, and he spoke in a deep, rich, heavily accented voice.
“I am Helios Ikari, the resident blade master. It is my sole responsibility to teach this group how to fight utilizing blades, swords, spears, and daggers. If you can name a bladed weapon, I can teach you how to use it in the most lethal way possible… however, I will not lie to you that most weapons are heavy, and place a great strain on the arms and shoulders of the weak.” Helios smirked, an arrogant sort of smirk, and Michael did not think that he liked him so much. Nonetheless, he stood and shook the man’s hand, which had long and slender fingers, was stronger than his own was, and had many calluses on the fingers. This man’s nails were the color of freshly spilled blood, and were really quite frightening. After a pause, seeing Michael’s expression, Helios spoke once more. “I only come out at night… usually. You will not run into me unless you happen to have a night of insomnia.” Michael let out a sigh of relief.
The next figure stood, and pulled back his hood to reveal short, messy brown hair. He was shorter than Skye, but only by an inch, and had gleaming hazel eyes. His face was so similar in shape to Skye’s, that it was as if he and Skye were brothers. In only a few seconds, the man spoke up, and Michael’s assumptions proved to be correct.
“My name is Tsunami Silverstar, and I am the brother of Skye and second in command of this group. It is my duty to heal the injured. My art of healing is nothing like any other thing that a human could dare to replicate, and my powers are endless. Feel free to come to me whenever you are injured. I can mend anything from the smallest of scars to the largest of broken bones. You name, it, I can heal it.” He reached out his white-nailed hand and pressed it gently to where a bruise was forming, unnoticed, on Michael’s forehead. His hand warmed up, and then the bruise vanished without a trace. Michael then realized that the man had healed him. He smiled his thanks, and Tsunami backed off so that another person could approach him.
A third figure stood and pulled down its hood, to reveal a young woman barely out of her teens. She stood at a height of five feet and seven inches, which was not very tall, but it was tall for a woman. Her blood crimson hair shimmered in the dull light of the room, and her brilliant emerald eyes glowed in the darkness. She had a somewhat Asian look, with slightly slanted eyes half-veiled by long black lashes. Her lips were red to match her hair, as were her nails. She bowed respectfully to him, not speaking, and Michael mirrored the action with a smile.
“They call me Shiva Zephyra, Michael-san. I am the keeper of scrolls,” The woman said, in a soft and almost melodious tone of voice. He was about to ask her where she was from, but he could see that Shiva was obviously not one for talking, for she had already stepped backwards so that the next person could step forward.
Two male figures with black-painted fingernails came forth this time, pulling down their hoods as one. One had spiky shoulder-length golden-blonde hair and green eyes, and the other had short, messy crimson hair and green eyes. The blonde-haired person stood at a height of five feet and eight inches, the redhead at six feet. They smiled in unison, and Michael began to get a little worried about their possible state of mind. As if they noticed his obvious discomfort, both of them stopped with the act, and the redhead stepped forward… only to make a weird series of signs with his right hand similar to sign language. The blonde-haired person also walked up to Michael, but he spoke in a soft and friendly voice, translating the symbols.
“He says that his name is Sethra Azurite, and that he is much honored to meet you, but he unfortunately cannot talk due to a severe case of laryngitis.” Michael nodded his understanding and sent a look of sympathy at the redhead, who smiled in thanks. Michael then turned to the translator and politely asked for his name. The young man blinked at Michael, and then he remembered that indeed he had not told him who he was. “Oh yes, I forgot. How rude of me. My name is Daisuke Moonshadow, and I am Alexander’s older brother.” The blonde-haired man blushed in embarrassment because he had forgotten to do something so basic.
After Sethra and Daisuke had backed away, another female walked up to Michael. She was only five feet and three inches tall, but she made up for it with the look of sheer determination in her dark brown, almost black, eyes. Her hair was white-blonde, but the color of her eyebrows and the roots that were slightly showing told him that her true hair color was a rich chocolate brown. She did not smile, but nodded politely, looking like she really wanted to run away. He somewhat understood. Perhaps it was because of what he had done to his face that some people looked at him with such fright in their eyes.
“My name is Merridy…” She said to Michael, then politely bowed and backed away swiftly before anyone could notice the flat tone she had used on him. Michael was somewhat upset by this, and almost did not want to meet the next person out of fear that he or she would react in a similar fashion. This self-conscious feeling did not last very long, however, for it was time to meet the final five people in the group. Shoving his thoughts aside, he stood and waited politely to greet the next person. Michael hoped that Merridy was the only one who did not like him.
Three figures rose as one, and one of them was very tiny. They all revealed their faces, from the tallest one (six feet and one inch), to the shortest (four feet and three inches). The tallest figure had a shocking mess of violet hair, and black-painted nails, looking as though he was just entering his mid twenties. His brilliant brown eyes flashed with knowledge and strength. The man smiled brightly, reddish lips parting to reveal straight white teeth. This was Davis Shinigami, eldest of the Shinigami brothers.
The medium-sized person stood at a height of five feet and ten inches. He had shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes that were pale to rival Skye’s own. There was a warm and kind look about him, and Michael thought he was rather handsome, with a long straight nose and a bright smile almost similar to Michael’s own smile. After a brief introduction, with a shake of the man’s leather-gloved hand, Michael learned that this young man’s name was Zagato.
The youngest, standing at four feet and three inches, was Taichi. He had big blue eyes that glowed like jewels, and he was only a child! The little boy bounded up to where Michael stood and gave him a massive around-the-waist hug with childlike enthusiasm and energy. Instantly, Michael’s heart melted at this gesture and he bent down to envelope the little one in his arms. This child was as adorable as any other child might be, and Michael had always loved kids. Really, this child was no different from anyone else Michael had met, except for his pale-as-death skin. Taichi gave him a bright smile, which Michael eagerly returned.
When the next of the black-robed figures did not stand but remained silent, a final tall figure walked over to Michael and pulled down his hood. He had his long, golden brown, wavy hair pulled into a thick ponytail at the nape of his neck. His warm honey-golden eyes pierced Michael’s soul as their eyes met, and he sensed the worried thoughts flitting around in Michael’s head like thousands of little birds. Wordlessly, the brown-haired person pulled him into a quiet embrace; soothing away the singer’s fears effortlessly in his warm and strong arms. This man was only three inches taller than Michael was, and there was a pleasant smell coming from his body. A quick and silent sniff told Michael that the scent was mint, hinting at a little bit of cinnamon.
“I am Cerus Strife, the resident chef… though I doubt that you will want to stay” The man said as he released Michael. He then added, when the others had not, “Don’t worry about Merridy’s behavior from earlier on… She’ll feel guilty about it later tonight and she will come and apologize to you… she did that to all of us before we told her that we all respected her and that she should do the same for us. Generally, she heeds that rule… but today she has been in a bad mood. I think it has something to do with a certain blonde over there.”
Cerus indicated the hooded figure that had not stood with the silver-painted nails of his left hand, and it turned out to be Alexander, for he pulled down his hood and stalked over to Cerus. His too-feminine face looked highly amusing as Alexander tried to glare, and before Michael could stop himself, he let out a short, harsh chuckle. This only earned Michael another glare, but the glare somewhat backfired on Alexander as he only laughed a bit more. Blue eyes narrowed dangerously, and Michael was jolted out of his humor when suddenly an unseen, but slightly painful force smacked him right in the center of his chest. The force knocked him lightly backwards into the chair in which he had originally been sitting. Alexander had just struck him, and he had not even seen it coming!
“Next time you laugh… please do it around someone who doesn’t have a fifth-level black belt in Karate. It might be considerably less painful.” Alexander said smugly, rising smoothly out of the fighting stance he had lowered into when he had knocked Michael backwards. “Or… you could always take my glares a bit more seriously, and I might go easier on you. However, my actions were completely unacceptable, and I sincerely apologize for hitting you. I just don’t appreciate being laughed at and I tend to get too touchy about it.” He walked over to Michael and gently helped him back out of the chair before turning away in shame. It was impossible, Michael knew, but it even seemed that Alexander’s hair drooped when his shoulders slumped.
“So, what do you think?” After seeing Michael interact with the others of his clan for an hour, Skye now stood beside the singer bombarding him with questions. The crimson-haired man was now absently tracing invisible patterns on Michael’s shoulder with one long fingernail. “Do you like this group?” At Michael’s nod, Skye asked just one more question. “What do you think of our powers?” At this, Michael paused and looked thoughtful. Yes, he had enjoyed meeting all the people, but he was surprised that all of them had powers. Helios had proudly demonstrated his swordsmanship by sparring with Davis. The two men had been blurring all over the room, gracefully twisting, dodging, and jabbing their swords at each other until Helios spun easily around Davis and held the blade of his sword to the other man’s throat. Taichi and Zagato persuaded the rest of them to play dodge ball, and none of the people escaped Taichi’s swift throwing arm and deadly accuracy. The activity was all a blur, and the sight was incredible to behold.
“Well, they are interesting, Skye. I did not realize another human could move so fast... let alone a dozen of them,” Michael said. “Then again…” he added, “…I guess it is no surprise considering that you all seem to have supernatural abilities. I remember when one of you carried me here. Whoever it was, he certainly was moving faster than any car could until he slowed down, and his hands were as cold as ice.” Michael paused for a moment, thinking. “He also was singing one of my songs. I wish I could find him and thank him for that… it really was lovely to be swept off my feet.” He glanced around the room, before adding quickly to Alexander. “Your apology is accepted, Alexander. I’m not as fragile as one might think that I am, though I was a bit surprised by the sudden poke in the chest.” He smiled at the blonde-haired man, who looked relieved, whereas before he had been gnawing on his lip hard enough to draw blood. Michael, true to his polite nature, offered a tissue to stop the bleeding. Gratefully, Alexander took it.
“Michael…” Skye began, and Michael turned to him. “That was my voice you heard. I had not realized that I even started singing until we arrived back here… and… well… I am glad you liked it… but I feared that you would not…. as for my hands… I am sorry about that, next time I will take the consideration of wearing gloves… However, I doubt that there will be a next time... I was selfish you know… dragging you here… because of me you could be in serious trouble… maybe even facing a life sentence in prison for all of this” He paused, and Michael urged him to continue. “If you want to go back… then by all means I will return you to the courtroom.”
“I never did think of it that way…” Michael admitted, trailing off before continuing. “…And although I should probably be angered with you, I find myself forgiving you, Skye. You only wanted to help me, and not to harm me any further. For that, I thank you. You are one of the very few who have helped me unconditionally, expecting absolutely nothing in return.” He sighed. “I do, however… have to get back to that courtroom… I hope you understand.” Skye nodded dejectedly, looking ashamed of his previous actions.
“It’s only been twenty-four hours; I can take you back right now if you wish.” Skye said. “Would you like that?” Michael nodded. “Very well then, but I’ll have to carry you. We don’t have cars… never needed them either.” Skye said, and then he added, “Follow me, please.” He led the way out of the room through a different door than the one they had come though in the first place, only to bring him outside into the midst of a deep forest. They certainly had come a long way. Michael’s eyes widened as he glanced around the area, taking in the view. There was not a single road or car in sight, only unspoiled nature for miles around.
“Prepare for lift-off!” The crimson-haired Vampire said in a playful tone that made Michael laugh. Skye then scooped Michael up effortlessly, his slightly shorter height made up for with his immense physical strength. This time Skye’s hands were warm, as he carefully cradled Michael like a child. Instinctively, Michael wound his arms around Skye’s neck and shoulders, leaning his head against the hollow where neck and shoulder met. Skye did not run yet, however, and Michael stared at him in wonder. Suddenly, Skye spoke. “Promise me Michael… promise me that you’ll just think of me whenever you need help… I will be there, for I can read minds and I have established a link with you while you were meeting my friends… I hope you don’t mind.” Skye’s smile was infectious, and Michael smiled back at him, nodding, giving his word that he would always think of Skye, maybe not every time, but in true times of crisis he would call the young man, who the rest of his group fondly called their prince. In truth, Michael could see why Skye was their prince, because something about Skye commanded respect.
“Shall we go, then?” Skye asked, and Michael nodded. With that, Skye darted forward swiftly, moving into a smooth and easy pace as they went back across the countryside to the city where the courtroom was. The police, who were just about to sentence Michael to a long stay in prison if he did not return, jumped out of their chairs as Michael suddenly appeared in front of them. Skye smirked to himself at the looks on their faces, and then swiftly dashed out the door, leaving Michael to his trial.
A year later found Michael alone in his new manor in Europe, with his three children safe in his custody, and Michael was truly grateful. Having the kids around during the day was nice, but somehow he felt alone as well. Nevertheless, even with this depression growing inside, Michael continued to live on and smile as often as he possibly could, for the sake of his children. Michael did not like having to lie to them, but he also did not want the children to know how upset he really was. Sometimes, the truth was worse than a lie.
Sometimes, Michael found himself wondering what his new friend from before the trial was up to, and sometimes he did not. A part of him was curious to see how this mind bond worked, however, and soon Michael found himself thinking more and more about the young man known as Skye Silverstar, but somehow he knew that meeting the young man again might be out of the question because the man was overseas. Suddenly the doorbell rang, so Michael walked down the hallway to open it and greet his guest. There was a slight pause as Michael took in the sight of flushed snow-white skin, a mass of crimson hair, and the sound of heavy breathing. Brown eyes met pale blue ones, and then bugged nearly out of their sockets.
