"Good job tonight, Gee," Frankie said as he loaded the last of the gear into the My Chemical Romance bus.
"Thanks," Gerard replied, watching some guys from a band famous enough to have their own roadies board their bus with a handful of groupies. He leaned against the bus and lit up a cigarette, sighing as he exhaled. It was the second week of their first Warped Tour, and Gerard was still a little star struck. Insane giggling erupted from the bus parked two down from MCR's, and Gerard glanced up to see his little brother being carried around on the shoulders of some dark-haired, tattooed and pierced guitarist-type.
"Hey Frankie," Gerard asked absently, nodding in his brother's direction. "Who are those guys with Mikey?"
Frankie stood up and looked toward the other bus. "Oh, you can't tell me you haven't met The Used," he answered, plucking the cigarette from Gerard's lips and taking a long drag.
"Hey, get your own fucking smokes," Gerard snapped, snatching his cigarette from between Frankie's fingers. "And no, I haven't met them."
Frankie grinned in response and pointed toward Mikey. "The one toting your brother around the lot is the bass player, Jeph. The blonde leaning against the bus is Quinn, the guitarist... and the scruffy-looking dude giggling like a mad man is Bert, the lead singer. Branden must already be on the bus."
"Right, right," Gerard said, nodding. "Wait, where was I when you met these dudes?"
"Probably holed-up in your bunk, bent over your sketchpad," Frankie replied, giggling as Gerard stuck out his tongue at him. "They came over and introduced themselves after the first show. Bert really wanted to meet you. He said our band rocked... but I told him you were in your 'I'm-a-dark-and-moody-artist' mode, so it should probably wait." Gerard shot him an icy look. Frankie just grinned and continued. "Anyway, Mikey and I wound up hanging with them for the rest of the night." He grabbed Gerard by the arm and started pulling him toward the other bus. "Come on, I'll introduce you now."
"Yo, McCracken!" he called, waving as they approached. Bert glanced up, still giggling, and Gerard's stomach did a somersault. Those were the bluest eyes he'd ever seen, eyes glowing with a tinge of madness, set in a face that couldn't be a day over 20.
"What?" Bert asked, then grinned as he saw who Frankie was dragging behind him.
"My friend here thinks you have a nice ass and would like to autograph it for ya," Frankie teased, stopping next to the bus. Gerard smacked Frankie on the back of the head, laughing a little as he turned toward Bert.
"Gerard Way," he said, smiling as he extended his hand.
"Bert McCracken" he answered, taking Gerard's hand and kissing it, bowing low. Gerard pulled his hand away and let out a small giggle. "My, my, cute and charming," he said, winking at Bert.
"Stop it!" Bert replied, batting his eyes coquettishly before dropping the act and continuing. "Seriously, dude, your band fucking rocks. You're fucking amazing on stage."
Gerard smiled shyly. "Thank you... I'll have to catch your next set so I can shower you with compliments," he said, kicking at the ground nervously.
"Awesome!" Bert grinned. A slightly awkward silence fell as they stood by the bus smiling at each other, neither on of them knowing what to say next. Quinn looked back and forth between the two of them, smirking slightly. "Uhh, you guys want to come in for a beer?" he asked, blessedly breaking the silence.
"Sounds good to me," Frankie replied as he followed Quinn, Bert, and Gerard onto the bus. "Hey, you coming?" he called to Mikey, who was still being carried around the bus by a very tired looking Jeph.
"Be right there," Jeph replied, then proceeded to trip over a particularly large piece of gravel. Both were sent sprawling to the ground in a heap of limbs and glasses. They managed to untangle themselves, giggling through the entire process, and joined everyone inside.
"That's not fair," Gerard whined sarcastically as he topped the bus stairs and took in his surroundings. "Your TV is bigger than ours."
"Too bad Bert always has Spiderman playing on it," Quinn said as he took two beers from the mini-refrigerator and passed them to Gerard and Frankie. Bert looked a little embarrassed at Quinn's revelation of his penchant for comic book movies.
Gerard studied him, intrigued by Bert's sudden nervousness. "Hey, there's nothing wrong with that!" Gerard replied, feigning offense. "Maybe I should ride with you sometime." He winked at Bert, realizing about five seconds too late how suggestive what he'd said must have sounded. Bert paled, blushed, and changed the subject. "So, uhh... what do you guys do when you're not making kick-ass music?"
Frankie swallowed his mouthful of beer and replied, "Oh, not much. We mostly engage in wild orgies with other bands we meet on tour."
The bus roared with laughter, except for Bert, who just laughed nervously and glanced at Gerard, who had landed on Frankie's lap when all the other seats were taken.
"Shh, Frankie!" Quinn giggled. "You're scaring the newbie." He flicked his bottle cap at Bert, hitting him between the eyes.
"Shit, dude! That fucking hurt!"
"Aww, I'm sorry cupcake," he said, sending Bert a classic puppy face.
Gerard studied Bert's face, smiling inwardly at the blush that was creeping up his neck and across his cheeks. "Newbie?" he asked, pretending he didn't know what Quinn had meant.
"Yeah, our little Bert is going through his 'I'm not gay, I just kiss boys' phase," Jeph answered, throwing his arm around Bert's shoulders.
"Dude, would ya shut up!" Bert snapped, glancing at Gerard and Frankie nervously.
"Hey, its okay man," Frankie said soothingly. "You definitely don't have to worry about Gee and I having a problem with it. I'm what I like to call an 'Equal Opportunity' kind of guy." He laughed, making the quotation symbols with his fingers. "And Gee here, well... he's just a flat out fag." He tickled Gerard's side, making him let out a high pitched squeal. "See?" he asked jokingly, winking at Bert.
Bert grinned, visibly relaxing. Frank took the last swig of his beer and yawned, knocking Gerard from his lap as he stretched. He stood up laughing and extended his hand to help Gerard up.
"Well, I'm gonna head back to our bus. I don't think I could do a night up after how hard we rocked this afternoon," he said as he headed for the door. "Mikey, Gee?"
"Yeah," Mikey replied. "I'm tired too. That piggy-back ride took a lot out of me." He giggled and ducked as Jeph moved to hit him in the back of the head.
"Well, I guess I'm outnumbered then," Gerard said, smiling at Bert as he followed Frankie. Bert stood up quickly, following them out. "We should do this again," he said, almost questioningly.
"Definitely," Gerard replied too quickly. There was a small, awkward silence. "How about tomorrow night, when we get to the hotel?"
"Sounds good," Bert replied, unable to suppress another grin.
"It's a date then." Gerard returned Bert's smile and clapped him on the back. "It was nice meeting you, kid."
"Dude, you can't be that much older then I am," Bert shot back.
"Ahh, but its not age that makes one a kid, my friend," Gerard said, his face a mask of seriousness, the twinkle in his eye the only thing giving away his jest.
Bert giggled, a blush once again coloring his face. Man, I could get used to that sound, Gerard thought as he turned to walk back to his bus. "Bye," he called over his shoulder, shooting Bert a final grin. Bert grinned and waved before climbing back onto his own bus.
Gerard led the way back, humming to himself, a slight bounce in his step. Mikey caught Frankie's eye behind Gerard's back, nodded in his direction, and grinned.
~*~*~*~ Gerard awoke the next morning in the best mood he'd been in for a long time. He hopped out of his bunk and headed for the front of the bus to find everyone else already awake. Frankie was sprawled across the floor, watching Matt and Ray engage in a vicious game of Halo. He squeezed past them on his way to the fridge, humming a light tune. He grabbed a soda and plopped down beside Mikey, who was curled up in the corner of the couch, his face buried in a comic book. He threw open the bus window and smiled, breathing in the warm, desert air.
"Damn, it's a beautiful day," he said, lighting up a cigarette. Mikey smirked as he turned a page, Frankie snickered, and Matt and Ray dropped their controllers, turning to gape at Gerard in unison. Gerard noted their shock, and turned to face them, grinning.
"What? Am I not allowed to be in a good mood?"
"Its just... you've been moping around since the start of the tour," Ray answered, his expression still stunned. "Why the sudden change in mood?"
Gerard shrugged and turned back to the window, continuing his humming.
"Don't worry, guys," Frank chuckled, stealing a drink of Gerard's soda. "He's just happy because he smells fresh meat."
"Excuse me," Gerard retorted, kicking Frankie playfully in the ribs. "Did you ever think I just genuinely enjoy the scenery? Arizona is a beautiful state."
"Whatever you say, man," Frankie said, conceding the argument to Gerard with a grin.
"Uh uh, no way," Ray said, pausing the game. "Who is it?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Gerard laughed, shrugging again as he turned back to the window.
"Bullshit!" Matt exclaimed. "You didn't say a word when Frankie took your drink!"
"He's right," Ray added. "You usually bite his head off when he takes your stuff. So, what the hell happened between yesterday and today?"
"I'm telling you, nothing," he laughed as he flicked his cigarette out the window. "We just hung out with some guys from another band last night." Matt and Ray smirked at Gerard, eyebrows raised. "That's it, I swear!"
"Yeah, I'm sure," Ray teased.
"Like I said, boys," Frankie chimed in. "Fresh. Meat."
Gerard rolled his eyes. "Whatever."
"Aww, Gee, that hurts right here," Frankie pouted, tapping his chest with two fingers.
Gerard giggled in spite of himself, then asked, "How long 'til Phoenix, anyway?"
"Um, like three hours, I think," Frankie answered as he returned his attention to Matt and Ray, who had resumed their game.
"What's the matter, Gee, got a hot date?" Mikey asked from behind his comic book.
"Can it, Little Brother!" he snapped, although there was a definite smile playing at the corners of his mouth as he pulled on his headphones and returned his gaze to the passing scenery.
He spent the rest of the ride in a daze, unable to get his mind off Bert. Why am I so excited about hanging out with a guy I barely know? he thought. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with those big, blue eyes framed with long, dark lashes. Or those perfect pink lips that just beg to be kissed. Or that adorable laugh. Or the way he blushes every time I smile at him. Or that wild hair I'd love to see all tangled and sweaty after I've-Fuck! His thoughts were interrupted by a pillow whacking him in the face.
"Snap out of it, dude, we're at the hotel," Frankie said, laughing at Gerard's startled expression.
~*~*~*~ Gerard paced back and forth across his hotel room, gnawing on his fingernails as he waited for the rest of the guys to arrive. It was his turn to have a room to himself, and he'd gotten a suite, so he told everyone they could hang there. God, I feel like a high school chick waiting for her prom date, he thought as his stomach leapt at the sound of knocking on his door.
"Gee, quit floggin your log, we're here with the booze," Frankie's familiar voice rang through the door. Gerard opened it, laughing as he let Frankie and Mikey in.
"Where are Matt and Ray?" he asked as they dropped three brown paper bags onto the dresser.
"Oh, they decided they'd rather eat Mexican food and play video games all night," Mikey replied as he stretched out along one of the beds.
"Right.." Gerard said, grinning.
Frank looked like he was about to come back with one of his token smart-ass remarks, but was interrupted by another knock.
"Let the games begin," he said, rubbing his hands together as he ran to the door.
"Are you the gentleman who called Private Ryan's Rock N' Roll escort service?" Quinn asked as Frankie opened the door.
Frankie erupted into giggles. "Yes, our lonely, brooding front man needs to be shown a good time," he answered, his face completely serious. "I didn't know it would be a two-for-one special, though." He winked as he shut the door behind them.
"Well, we figured, one for each of the Way brothers, right Mikey?" Quinn teased as he stretched out beside the younger brother. Mikey giggled and smacked at Quinn's arm playfully, blushing slightly.
"Oh no, two weeks into Warped Tour and already my baby brother's turning into a groupie," Gerard sighed melodramatically, catching Quinn's eye and grinning. "Where's the rest of the band?" he asked, turning toward Bert, who was still standing in the doorway with both hands stuffed into the pockets of his hoodie, looking nervous. Gerard motioned for him to sit down.
"Oh, they were so excited about sleeping in a real bed they decided to turn in early," he replied as he took a seat on the edge of the unoccupied bed.
"Oh well, more for us, right?" Gerard grinned, taking a seat next to Bert.
"Right," Frankie agreed as he rummaged through the paper bags. "Okay, guys, I have an excellent idea for how we can dispose of all this fine tequila." He pulled a DVD from one of the bags and turned to face everyone. "I have season one of Viva La Bam, so why don't we make a drinking game out of it?"
"Do what?" Quinn asked, sitting up.
"Okay, Gee will take a shot every time someone says 'fuck', Bert's word will be 'shit', Quinn, you can drink every time April says 'Are you kidding me?', I'll drink when Vito says something unintelligible, and Mikey, since you're such a lightweight," he shot Mikey a grin, "you have to take a shot for every minute Compton Ass Terry is onscreen."
Bert collapsed in giggles. "Man, how'd you come up with this shit?"
Frankie smiled as he slid the first disc into the DVD player. "Oh, we've been doing this for years with different movies," he replied as he grabbed the remote and took a seat on the bed with Quinn and Mikey.
Six episodes, forty shots, and eleven trips to the bathroom later, everyone was sprawled across both beds, laughing hysterically.
"Damn, this was a good idea," Bert laughed on his way back from his fourth trip to the bathroom. As he tried to lay back down on the bed, he tripped over Gerard's discarded shoe and landed face first in Gerard's lap, causing the laughter volume to go up several levels. "I'm sorry," he giggled as he rolled over, resting his head on Gerard's thigh as he grinned up at him.
"Don't apologize," Gerard smiled, gazing at Bert warmly as he stroked his long, messy hair out of his face.
"Mmm, this is comfy," Bert said, closing his eyes. "You make a nice pillow."
"You make a nice... person using me as a pillow," Gerard replied, then laughed at his own drunken awkwardness. Jesus, did I really just say something that retarded? he thought through his haze.
Quinn chuckled. "Well, I hate to break this little cuddle-fest up," he said sarcastically, "but its 4:30 in the morning. I don't know about you guys, but I have a show to play tomorrow."
Bert sat up quickly, accidentally bumping his head into Gerard's. "Damnit, I'm a clumsy-ass drunk," he laughed, rubbing his head. "Are you okay Gee? Can I call you that?"
Gerard couldn't stop the huge grin from spreading across his face. "Of course, and I will be if you kiss it and make it better."
Bert swallowed the lump in his throat, then leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on Gerard's forehead. Gerard closed his eyes, fighting to stop himself from grabbing Bert and pulling him into a real kiss.
"I'm sorry," Bert whispered as he pulled away and stood up. Gerard wasn't sure what he was apologizing for, but sent him a reassuring smile as he stood up and followed Bert and Quinn to the door.
"Okay, see you guys tomorrow," he said as they made their way out.
"Yep, see ya," Quinn called over his shoulder as they stumbled to their rooms. Gerard closed the door and turned to his band mates.
"Alright, dudes, I love you, but you have to go," he said as he pulled off his t-shirt. "Its time for this little punk to get some sleep."
"Ya know, I don't know how we're gonna get up in the morning," Frankie said as he stood up, pulling Mikey up with him. "See ya in a few hours."
"Night Gee," Mikey said sleepily as they made their way out of the room.
"Night guys."
As Gerard stumbled to his bed, he stepped on something hard. "Fuck, that hurt!" he slurred, grabbing his foot. He looked down to see one of Frankie's black spacers on the floor at the foot of the bed. Shit, he thought. I better take this back to him or he'll have a panic attack when he wakes up. He stumbled over to the door and opened it, finding himself face to face with Bert, who had his hand raised, about to knock.
"Umm, hi," Gerard smiled. Bert stood frozen for a couple of seconds as if deciding what to do, then reached his raised hand around the back of Gerard's neck and pulled him into a somewhat sloppy kiss. Gerard was stunned for a couple of seconds, then brought his hands to rest on Bert's hips, dropping Frankie's spacer as his tongue ghosted over Bert's lips. Bert gasped and pulled away, dropping his head and gazing at Gerard's feet.
"I'm sorry," he whispered shakily.
Gerard lifted Bert's chin, forcing him to look at him. Bert's eyes held a mixture of desire, pain, fear, and confusion; a look Gerard had worn well when he was Bert's age.
"Please don't be," he whispered, smiling warmly. He placed another soft kiss on Bert's lips, then pulled away to watch his reaction.
"I-I... just had to see," Bert stammered. "Goodnight, Gee," he whispered before turning on his heels and running down the hall, leaving a confused and somewhat disappointed Gerard staring after him from his hotel room doorway.
