Ray checked himself in his full-length mirror to make sure his tight jeans and even tighter tee shirt combo wasn’t making him look too fat. Of course, it was difficult not to look fat when standing next to Mikey Way, the epitome of heroine-chic. He glanced at the reflection of his boyfriend in the mirror behind him and smiled, still amazed that someone as beautiful as Mikey wanted to be with him.
Ray had been dating his best friend for almost two months now, and he couldn’t remember a time in his life when he felt happier, despite the blows to his self-esteem going out with him often caused. He took another quick glance at his own reflection and decided he looked as skinny as he possibly could, then left his room to see if Bob was somewhere close to being ready.
"Woohoo! REM takes the stage in exactly three hours and counting," Ray said cheerfully as he bounded into his roommate’s bedroom. His smile faded when he found Bob stretched across his bed in a pair of faded sweats and a baggy tee shirt, staring at a Cheers rerun.
"That certainly doesn’t look like proper concert attire to me," Ray said, looking at his friend with concern.
"Yeah, I don’t think I’m gonna go," Bob replied without taking his eyes from the screen.
"Bob, why?" Ray asked, almost whining. "You have to. Its gonna be so much fun!" he continued, bouncing a little as he flashed what he thought was his most convincing smile.
"I’m not feeling very well." Bob smiled up at his friend, but his eyes were full of barely masked pain as Mikey appeared behind Ray and wrapped his arms around his waist, kissing the top of his head.
"Are you sure?" Ray asked as he smiled and leaned back to give his boyfriend a proper kiss. Bob turned his eyes back to the TV, his smile gone.
"I’m sure."
"Alright then, if you’re sure," Mikey said in a voice of disappointment that was barely genuine.
"I’ll bring you back a tee shirt or something," Ray said, smiling as Mikey led him toward the door. He kept his arm around Ray’s waist as they left the apartment building and made their way down to the street.
Neither of them noticed Bob watching them walk away from his bedroom window.

Mikey and Ray smiled at each other and added their lighters to the sea of flames surrounding them as REM began to play the opening to Everybody Hurts. Mikey draped an arm around Ray’s shoulders as they both swayed along to the music. When the song ended and the band moved into Losing My Religion, Mikey leaned in close to Ray’s ear.
"Do you remember when you played this song to me?" he whispered. Ray looked up at Mikey, his eyes shining happily.
"How could I forget. That was the night we got together." Mikey smiled and leaned in for a soft kiss. Ray smiled against his lips and pulled him closer, thinking there was no way his life could get any more perfect.
When the concert was over, they made their way back to Ray’s apartment hand in hand, Ray talking animatedly about how perfect the show had been.
"God, doesn’t Michael Stipe have a beautiful live voice?" Ray asked as they entered the apartment. "Oh, hang on, let me check on Bob," he said, his voice lowering to a whisper as he peeked inside his roommate’s bedroom. Bob was asleep, propped against his headboard with an open book lying across his chest. Ray smiled and closed the door quietly, then went to his own room where Mikey was waiting.
"Oh man, and the atmosphere!" Ray continued as he stepped into his bathroom and grabbed his toothbrush. "Wasn’t it nice to be able to show our affection without worrying what other people might think?" he asked after spitting a mouthful of toothpaste into the sink.
"Ray?"
"Hmm?" Ray finished rinsing his mouth and grabbed a nearby towel.
"Shut up."
"Why?" Ray asked as he dried his mouth and hands, turning to Mikey with a hurt and confused expression. Mikey was leaning against the doorframe, grinning at him languidly. Ray’s question was answered when Mikey stepped forward and pulled him into a hungry kiss.
"That’s why," Mikey said as he led Ray to the bed and gently pushed him onto his back.
"Oh." Ray smiled up at his boyfriend as Mikey stretched out over him and slid his hands under his shirt, removing it.

Ray yawned and stretched, smiling as he remembered the previous night’s events. He rolled over and reached out to curl up with Mikey, his arm falling onto an empty mattress. He opened his eyes to see Mikey sitting at the edge of the bed, staring at a spot on the floor and frowning as he smoked a cigarette.
"Morning Baby," Ray smiled, watching Mikey’s mouth as he took a long pull off his cigarette. Mikey grunted something unintelligible in response without taking his eyes off the spot on the floor.
"Mikey, what’s wrong?" Ray asked, propping himself up on his elbow.
"Nothing," Mikey replied as he crushed his cigarette out in the ash tray he was holding.
"Bullshit. What is it?" Ray asked, sitting up completely. Mikey quickly brushed the hand Ray placed on his shoulder away and stood up, pulling on his clothes.
"I’ve just been thinking," he said when his head came back into view. He sat back down on the bed and turned to Ray, who was now looking at him with a mixture of fear and concern. "Maybe we should go back to being just friends, ya know?"
"What?" Ray asked, completely stunned. Mikey sighed and ran a hand over his hair, avoiding Ray’s eyes, which had grown wide with shock.
"Look, its not that I don’t love you. I do, just… not the way I should."
"Why?" Ray wailed, bursting into tears. "Why, Mikey? I thought you loved me! Is there something wrong with me? Why?" he cried between sobs.
"Dammit Ray, there’s nothing wrong with you!" Mikey snapped, then pulled Ray into an awkward hug. "Oh shit, Ray, please don’t cry. I just don’t feel the same way you feel, and I can’t keep pretending I do just to keep you happy."
"But I love you!" Ray wailed again, sobbing against Mikey’s chest.
"I love you, too. That’s why this is so hard. I just need some time by myself. Can’t we just go back to being best friends?" Ray pulled back, tears still spilling from his eyes as he stared at the blankets in front of him.
"Please, Ray?" Mikey’s voice sounded desperate. Ray’s sobs ceased and he nodded without looking up, sniffling when Mikey lifted his chin and looked into his swollen, red eyes.
"We’re still on for that movie Friday, right?" Mikey asked, smiling his best sweet smile. Ray nodded and returned the smile weakly, watching as Mikey stood up and grabbed his jacket and keys.
"I’ll call you in a couple of days," he said as he left the room, closing the door behind him. Ray waited until he heard him leave the apartment, then collapsed across his bed, sobbing into the pillow that was still covered in Mikey’s scent. His head snapped up when he heard his bedroom door open.
"Oh, Ray," Bob said as he rushed to Ray’s side and handed him a cup of hot tea. Ray sipped the tea then put it aside, collapsing onto Bob’s shoulder.
"I was so happy!" Ray cried. Bob ran his hands up and down Ray’s back soothingly as Ray’s body shook with sobs.
"I know, Ray," Bob whispered, resting his cheek on the top of Ray’s head. "I know."
