‘Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes’, the words crept across the room. Aiming them directly at her son, Margaret glared at him.
’Mmmm’ he smiled, ‘But they taste so good’.
’Gerard you promised’ she scolded, throwing the packet toward him. Half smiling as he caught them and winked, turning to face the window she stared after him as he walked down the gravel path. ‘Will he ever quit?’ Margaret asked her husband, as she walked over to kiss him affectionately on the cheek.
’One day, probably no time soon anyway. Certainly not in light of recent events.’
Margaret sighed, leaving her husband to his paper and walked into the kitchen to put the kettle on.
’Gerard mate, glad to see your home’ a voice called.
’Paul! How have you been’ Gerard hugged his old friend close to him. ‘How did you find me?’
’I saw the papers and knew you would come back here. How long are you here?’
’Only a week or so, but I need it.’ He sighed, running his fingers over his chin, he pulled out his cigarettes and offered Paul one.
’So what happened?’ Paul asked timidly, ‘you need to talk about it, easier than letting it build’
’I came back from filming, came back early to be with her. I found them in our bed, and that’s all I can remember, I went crazy. Smacked him, howled at her, then stormed out.’
’The papers painted an ugly picture’
’Well I expected that, that’s why I’m here’
’Well, at least you didn’t marry the bitch’ Paul smiled, nudging Gerard softly. Gerard half smiled and stared at the floor, collapsing against a wall he perched, rocking his body softly, inhaling every few minutes. Paul watched tears form on his friends face and pulled him in for a bear hug.
’I just thought she was the one’ Gerard whimpered. Feeling emotion rush through him, ‘I’ve felt nothing but hate and anger these past few days and now… all I feel is sadness. I didn’t now she was unhappy’
Paul just held him close and smiled, ‘God I missed you, but I didn’t want a blubbering wreck back’
Gerard blinked, wiping his eyes and smirking, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry. It just hit me, I mean I don’t know. I’m a mess a real mess. I’m home trying to smile and pretend I am fine, I’m an actor. I can do this’
’Not in front of me you don’t have to. So what are you going to do now anyway?’
’Life wise, I have no clue, career wise keep on filming. If I’m not busy I will go mad, I know I will’
‘Take a break Ger, you work far too hard, we should have a night out. A nice boys one.’
’I remember those nights out, I woke up with a bitch and a hangover, forget it’
’Come on, get her out of your system, have a drink, meet a girl. Bounce back to Hollywood and show them some woman wont beat a Scot’
’I really don’t want to Paul’ Gerard smiled, staring at his friend, ‘Really not feeling up to it’
Gerard stood in the club staring around him, ‘Paul did I mention I really don’t want to be here’ he shouted to his friend.
’Yeah’ Paul hollered back, ‘Several times, here’
’What is that?’ Gerard cried staring at the blank tar like liquid glinting at him in the dark.
’Black sambuka, chug it’
’I hope you said chuck it, because that isn’t going down my throat’
’Worst things have?’
’Such as?’
’I haven’t forgotten the vinegar, now drink.’
Gerard scowled, and put the glass to his lips, mentally saying farewell to sobriety he chugged it back and grimaced as it burnt his insides. Instantly h felt it taking effect, and 3 shots later he found himself feeling much better. Leaning in the bar with Paul staring as the woman danced all around them. Out the corner of his eye he saw a girl embrace Paul, kissing him wildly she stared at Gerard, instantly he knew she wanted him to leave them alone and he obliged. Walking away from his friend he stared around the club, nothing much had changed since he went left. Same regulars, same lights and the same music as far as he could tell. Once this club had been the hotspot for him and his friends to get laid, now it seemed a sad shadow of his former past. Turning to look for Paul, he saw him kissing the girl and groping at her, ‘it seems some people never grow up’ he laughed to himself, walking to the coat section and collecting his jacket.
Thanking the doormen, he walked out in the crisp night air and marvelled at how clean it tasted, picking up his pace he headed back home. Lighting up another cigarette he stopped along the promenade and stared over the river, his heart didn’t feel broken, the sambuka wouldn’t allow that, but he felt mildly better than he had in days. Inhaling sharply, he coughed and spluttered, staring at the cigarette he frowned and threw it to the floor, extinguishing it with his foot, he decided perhaps that chapter of his life should close as well. Pulling his collar up he started walking once more until he heard a sharp scream. Stopping he listened intently, another scream pierced the air, followed by a cry for help. Pulling his hands from his pockets, he ran toward the sound. In the dark it was hard, but he could make out a woman crying in an alleyway, someone had her pinned and he could see the mans hands grabbing at her. Without a thought Gerard rushed down the alley and grabbed him, throwing him backwards, he stepped forward once more. The man jumped and stared at the menacing figure, grabbing at the floor he crawled up and ran away. Gerard waited until he had vanished and turned to face the shivering girl. Kneeling down he brushed her hair from her face, and frowned as she jumped back.
’Here let me help you’ he soothed, lifting her to her feet, behind him he could hear the pounding of feet, and knew her cried had attracted other men. Not wanting to be found in this situation he smiled once move, ‘Look after yourself’ he spoke softly then ran off down the alleyway, darting along the back roads he found himself on the high street and found his bearings before heading back towards his home.
’Miss are you ok?’ a man asked, pulling the frightened into the light, ‘what happened? What’s your name?’
’Elizabeth, Elizabeth Ericsson’ the girl stammered, staring into the dark.
’Which way did he run? Who was it?’ the man demanded, following her eyes, ‘Did he head down there?’
’they both did’ she cried, feeling her knees leave her once more, the man held her steady, ‘One man, saved me. But then he left, ran after the other one’
’Who was the other one, did he do anything to you? Do we need to call the police?’
’No, the other man came in time. I will be fine, just a little shaky. Thank you’
’Well at least come back to my pub and have a shot of brandy, then ill pop you in a cab home’
’Thank you, you are kind’ she smiled, holding onto him as he walked her to a safe place. Glancing over her shoulder, she tried to piece together the last few minutes, ‘Who was that shape in the shadows?’ She muttered to herself.
