Chapter One2
“Friend or Foe?”
“Have you seen the shampoo?” Lena said her bare body dripping from head to foot as she peaked out the door. She had been in the hotel shower for nearly five minutes before she realized there was no shampoo in the bathroom. She hadn’t bothered to cover up, the room was warm and Julia wasn’t paying attention anyway.
“It must still be in my suitcase,” she said looking at her idly, “I’ll get it for you.”
“Thanks.” Lena said as she handed her the bottle. “Are you okay?”
Julia had a discontented look upon her face, as if she’d rather be somewhere else. She looked up at her friend with a forced smile. “I’ll be okay, don’t worry about me.”
Julia returned to the bed where she had been watching TV, not that she had understood much of it because it was in English. She flipped through the channels lazily catching only bits and pieces of what was being said. She missed Russia, where the people spoke her language, where she knew how to get around, and where her little daughter Natasha lived.
“I don’t think you’re okay…” Lena said sitting beside Julia. She had finished in the shower and was wrapped up in a white towel. She wrapped her arms around Julia and rested her head on her shoulder. “Please tell me.”
“You don’t have to hold me, we’re alone.” Julia said irritably.
“Julia! Why are you talking like that?!” Lena said letting her go abruptly.
“I don’t know…” Julia said laying her head on Lena’s lap sleepily. “I’m just sick of all this…”
“Do you mean the tour?” Lena said putting a hand on her head affectionately.
“The tour, this country, the act, everything…” Julia said with an agitated sigh.
Lena was quiet while she stroked Julia’s head. She wasn’t worried much, Julia had a tendency to get pissed off or upset easily, but she could tell that she was homesick. Over the years Lena had come to know Julia so well that she could tell what she was thinking by the way she looked at her, or by the way she sighed.
"Lena?" Julia said sitting up and looking her in the face.
"Yes?" she responded curiously.
"I don't know what I'd do without you..." she said wrapping her arms around Lena and hugging her tight.
Again Lena said nothing, but this time it was out of mild shock. Julia was acting very strange; something must really be bothering her. Perhaps she was really homesick? Did she miss her boyfriend? Did she miss Natasha?
"We really should get to sleep; we've got a long photo shoot to do tomorrow." Lena finally said.
"Yeah, you're right." Julia said lying back onto the bed as Lena got up and finished getting dressed.
Half an hour later Julia was fast asleep, or at least she appeared to be, and Lena lay awake worrying about her. She missed the usual wild and exciting Julia. What had happened to her? She wasn't even pissed off like she sometimes got, she was just depressed. Why?

"You've been on tour for nearly six months already. Are you homesick at all?" the American reporter asked quickly after fighting his way to the front of the press conference crowd.
"Yes we are very homesick." Lena said in English. "Julia more of all."
Julia looked at her with a slightly irritated expression, but said nothing. She wasn't in the mood to try and remember the stupid language anyway. She simply looked at the endless sea of flashing lights and swaying microphones with a weak smile.
"Julia?" the same reporter shouted above the crowd. "Your baby, Natasha, is still in Russia, correct?"
"Natasha" and "Russia" was all Julia caught as reporter shot out the question. She turned to Lena as if to say, "Help?"
Lena went ahead and answered the question for her, "Yes. Natasha stays in Russia and we miss her very much."
"What exactly is your relationship with Julia's daughter, Lena?" a blond haired reporter yelled waving at them furiously.
"Well...?" Lena said looking at Julia quickly. Julia hadn't understood a bit, in fact she was staring off into space in the other direction.
"I love Natasha as if she was my daughter as well." Lena said shortly.
The crowd buzzed with excitement. Julia awoke from her daydreaming and looked at Lena.
"What did you say?" she asked worriedly.
"That will be all." Lena said shortly to the crowd. "We've got a photo shoot to get to."

“Lena put your arm around Julia…” the photographer said gesturing quickly. “Yeah, around her shoulders…”
Lena obeyed but Julia groaned. “Are we almost done?!”
The photographer looked at her indignantly but shook it off quickly. “Alright let’s take a break for today!” he said so that all the dozens of people working around him could hear as well.
“Finally!” Julia said standing up angrily. They had been shooting photos for nearly three hours and Julia was sick of it. They had posed in more positions than she could count.
“Julia?” Lena asked putting her arms around her as she looked into the mirror of their dressing room.
“What?” Julia said closing her eyes tiredly.
“What’s bothering you so much?” she said clinging to her affectionately.
“I wish you’d stop asking me that!” Julia said angrily. She pulled forward out of Lena’s hug and began to adjust her makeup. Her face was blank, but Lena could sense frustration in her behavior.
“I only ask because I’m worried about you.” Lena said sitting down beside her and watching her as she tried to act as if nothing was wrong. “I love you.”
Julia looked at her for a moment and then turned back to the mirror. “Why?”
“Why?!” Lena said astounded. “Why are you acting this way? That’s what I want to know!”
“Acting what way?” Julia asked disinterestedly.
“Acting so distant of course!” Lena said throwing her hands up with aggravation. “You were always the one who wanted to hold my hand! You were the one who liked to kiss me in public! You were the one who was always so proud to say that you loved me!”
“And?” Julia said protectively. “So what?!”
“You don’t anymore.” Lena said disappointedly. “It’s like you want nothing to do with me.”
“That’s not true.” Julia said looking away again.
“Then what is?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?” Lena said teary-eyed.
“I mean I don’t know!” Julia yelled at her. “I just don’t know!”
“I won’t stand this anymore!” Lena said standing up so suddenly that the stool she had been sitting on went crashing to the floor.
For a brief moment they looked at each other with a mix of rage and shock. Then Lena stomped out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Julia simply crossed her arms on the makeup counter and lay down her head.
