"So... this is who you want for Kei?" He portly man picked up one of the photographs scattered across the table and peered closely. "He looks familar.."
Gackt leaned forward, a cat-like grin spreading across his face. "I'm sure he does. This is Takarai Hideto, a very talented, very popular rock artist."
A light seemed to dawn in the other's eyes. "You mean Hyde, from L'Arc~en~Ciel?" He dropped the picture with a wrinkle of his bulbous nose. "A rival??"
"Perhaps, yes, you could say that. He is very recognisable, being the vocalist for Laruku for many years now, and has a very successful solo career going for him now." Gackt pushed more pictures and articles towards the other man. "But just look at him!" He picked up a more recent magazine that featured the newly bleached idol on the cover. "He's... perfect. He IS Kei."
The executive snorted softly. "I just don't see it." He fingered the magazine idly with one meaty finger. "Although...."
"He needs to be Kei." Gackt's eyes, colored a fake blue, narrowed in an all-to familar gaze.
The manager sighed and dropped the magazine on top of the others. "Alright. I'll try to contact his people sometime this afternoon and we'll see what they say, ok?" He gave a sidways glance at the stubborn singer. "I hear you mention him and his band quite often. You and he never....?"
Gackt held up a hand. "No, never." He looked out the window of the studio. "We've met on a number of shows and at many events, but always in a large crowd, with dozens of other artists gaining equal exposure. I'm sure he doesn't even remember ever meeting me."
The other man stood to leave. "Wait", Gackt stopped him. "Actually, if you can, find a number where I personally can reach him, even just for a brief minute. I want to ask his involvement in my project personally."
The older man nodded slowly. "Very well, I'll see what I can do," and turned and left. Gackt laced his fingers infront of his face, chin resting on top, and grinned.
"Stop, stop." Hyde threw his hands in the air. The others quieted as the shorter man tossed his pic and guitar on the leather couch lining the wall of the studio and headed towards their drummer.
"Yuki, what do you think if we increase the speed on the beat here," he indicated a page back on the sheet music, "and again here. Do you think that might make the tranistion at the end a little easier for Tetsu?"
Yukihito nodded silently, twirling the drumsticks between his long fingers. "Could give it a try." He knocked a few beats out at the faster pace. "I think it sounds a little better this way, though I think if someone would le our other guitaist get some sleep for once, he wouldn't be having trouble concentrating in the first place."
Ken blushed a deep red as the others laughed. Tetsu snaked a probing arm around his lover. "Oh, I think we both were at fault last night. Why Ken and I couldn't keep our-"
"Tetsu!" Ken growled.
Hyde chuckled behind his hand, then retrieved his guitar, strapping it around his boney shoulders. "Please," he begged jokingly, "I really don't need to hear about last night's exploints, especially this early in the morning."
There was a knock on the studio door and a head popped in. "Gomen nasai, but there is a phone call for Haido-san on line two." With a bow, the namel;ess man popped out.
Exchanging puzzled glances the others watched as Hyde walked across the room and picked up their extension. "Moshi moshi".
"Haido-san?" asked a voice that not in a million years did he expect to here. Hyde couldn't stop his heart from skipping a beat.
"Hai." he managed, his mouth for some reason not wanting to cooperate.
"Gomen nasai if I am interupting anything just now, but your manager gave me this number and he was unsure when you would have a free moment."
Hyde shifted his weight and leaned against the wall. "It's ok. We has just paused a moment anyway."
"You may not remember me, though we have met many times, briefly over the past few years." Came the voice, slightly anxious now. "My name is Camuei Gakuto."
Hyde's stomach did several daring somersaults in his body. "Ah! Of course I remember you, Gakuto-san. How could I not?" he fidgited slightly, rubbing his bare arm. "What can I do for you?"
"Well, you see, I have a rather interesting proposition for you, somewhat unique." There was a slight pause. "I know you are otherwise engaged at the moment, but perhaps we could discuss it over dinner? Say, sometime within the week? You must be horrbily busy right now, what with your new album hitting all over the world, and I would certainly not want to inconvenience you, but I think you might want to hear what I have to say."
He was now more than puzzled, but also very curious as to Gackt's cryptic proposition. "Ano... I believe tomorrow night I'll be free for the evening, if that would be convenient for you?"
He could hear the quick shuffling of papers. "Hai, that would be perfect. Have you ever been to that new American-style resterant, Pleasure Paradise, downtown?"
"No..." Hyde said slowly, "but it certainly does sound... interesting.""
"Good." he could almost hear the other man grinning. "But it should be fairly empty on a Monday evening. Would 7ish be ok with you?"
"Just fine. I will see you then." They exchanged goodbyes and he slowly replaced the reciever. Hyde took a deep breath, letting all that had just transpired slowly sink in. Three pairs of eyes, and several raised eyebrows followed him as he resumed his place on the sofa.
"Well??" Tetsu asked." Who on earth was that on the phone that has your face all flushed?"
Hyde flicke back his long bleached hair from his eyes. "That.. that was Camuei Gakuto." He shook his head in amazement. "He claimed to have a unique opportunity to offer me, and wanted to discuss it over diner tomorrow night."
"Gakuto..." Ken grinned. "As in, ex-Malice Mizer, turn international superstar? THAT Camuei Gakuto??"
"Hai."
"The one you always w-"
"Hai." Hyde cut him off, a dangerous glint in his eyes.
Tetsu rubbed his slightly stubbled chin in thought. "Very interesting indeed...."
He sat at the bar, idly sturring the olive in his dry martini round and round. He always tried to arrive a good 10 minutes early to any engagement, just in case unexpacted complications should arise. And in his life, they often did. At least taking any of his bodyguards had not been necessary, though Bruce had been very vocal about his oppoinion in the matter. But he had had none of it, because, ultimatly, he was still The Boss, and he really didn't need a third person to ruin this for him.
So Gackt sat on his barestool, alone in the quiet bar, and waited.
Hyde pushed open the glass door and peered inside the spacious resteraunt. A very faint hint of new paint filtered through the smells of various spices and scents fom the foreign food they served. The rooms, sectioned off many times over, was brightly lit, though Gackt had been correct in that they housed only a few dinner guests just now. He shrugged off his long leather coat, handed it to an attendant, finally spotting is appointment, already sitting at the bar off to the side, nursing a mostly finished drink.
"You beat me here." He teased "I hope I have not kept you waiting too long."
Gackt stood and bowed his head slightly. "No, I always make it a point to be two things whenever I'm with someone. I am always early, and always prepared. Shall we?"
A waiter appeared and led them through the resteraunt, towards in the back where there were even less people to notice them. The walls, painted and textured to look like old, chipping brick, were nearly covered in various American history paraphenilia, all hung or nailed in various strange ways. Records, instruments, photographs, toys, paintings; all arranged in seeming random fashion. It was sort of interesting to look at, if a bit overwhelming.
They where shown to a dimly lit corner of the resterant, nearly hidden behind a large, fake pot of plants, and given menus.
"I would, if I may, recomend the shrimp gumbo," Gackt said offhandidly, " if you are in an....adventurous mood."
Hyde looked up from his menu, but said nothing.
"Or perhaps the grilled chicken w/ steamed veggies and slice of apple pie?" Gackt set down his menu with a slight grin. "But I think I'm going to have the 4oz. steak and mushrooms."
Hyde grinned that wide, slightly sheepish, toothy smile so many fans adore the world over. "I beleive I am feeling quite... daring tonight."
The waiter appeared with their drinks and took their orders and menus. Hyde took a modest sip of his burgandy, letting the sweet smell of the wine linger under his nose.
Gackt watched as Hyde licked his lips slowly, and he felt, deliberatly. He shifted in his seat, suddenly feeling a bit hot.
"So.. this proposal of yours..?" Hyde asked.
"Hai, down to business then." He reached under his seat and opened a small briefcase Hyde didn't even realize the other man had been carrying. He produced a good sized stack of papers, perhaps an inch thick, bound at the top with a large clip. The top page, contained only 4 words; Moon Child and below it, in English, Camuei Gakuto.
"A long time ago, I began writing a story." Gackt tapped the manuscript fondly. "I had to work in my spare time for many years, but eventually, I finished it. It went through many revisions and rewrites, heavily influenced on my suroundings and the people I counted close friends at the time. But I was finally happy with my creation." He removed his violet sunglasses and placed them in the breast pocket of his suit. "But the next step in my dream was to turn it into a movie."
Hyde nodded slowly, trying not to show his dissapointment as he started to realize why he had been called here. He took a larger sip of his wine.
"All throughout this writing adventure, I have had very specific people in my mind for certain characters, though I never really allowed myself to believe that this day would finally come, to be in a position to work with these people. I poured alot of my soul and personality into one of the main characters, Sho, so I would really like to portray him on the Big Screen. But I still need one more thing to complete this...." He took a deep breath.
"I need you, Haido-san," he nearly whispered. "I need you to be my Kei."
Hyde nearly choked on his wine. With an embarrased cough, he carefully set his glass on the table and whiped his mouth. Before he could say anything, their waiter appeared w/ their dinners. Gackt ordered 2 more glasses of wine and they were left alone once more.
"I think..." Hyde said. "I think I'm a tad confused."
Gackt grinned sheepishly. "What I ment to say was, I want you to star in my lead role, as Kei. He is a vampire who befriends a boy and over the next 10, 20 years or so, gets caught up in his life and loves."
Hyde propped an elbow up on the table, hand infront of his mouth; a typical pose he was completly unaware that he did so often. "I don't... I don't know what I was thinking when you asked me here," a lie... "but I was certainly not expecting an invitation to act in a movie." Which was true, he told himself, If anything remotely innocent in nature had even crossed my mind, I figured he was going to ask me to invest in some grand sceme of his, as just another financial investor with a well known name. Hyde shook his head in amazement. "You can't possibly be serious about this."
Gackt took a small bite of his steak. "Hhnn.. Very nicely done. A treat." He set down his fork. "Of course I am serious. You are Kei. I wrote that character with you specifically in mind. He can be no one else."
"Are you out of your mind?" Hyde cried, only a little jokingly. He leaned forward across the small table for two. "I am not an actor, I am a singer. I do not know the first thing about acting!" He waved a hand dismissivly. "I will ruin it."
Their volume was starting to attract the attention of the few other patrons in the dining room. Gackt leaned forward as well, keeping his voice low. "All you have to do is act naturally, be who you are every day of your life. I am not asking for an Academy Award winning performance here. This character.." He looked the shorter man dead in the eye. "He was modeled after you in every way I could possibly imagine. He is you, and you are him. No one else could tell his story like I know you can."
Hyde suddenly became aware of just how close they were sitting. He could barely breath as his heart beat nearly into his throat. He licked his lips nervously and gazed up into Gackt's ocean blue eyes. "I'll... I'll have to think apon this. Perhaps..." his eyes drifted saway a moment, then jerked back up. "Perhaps we can meet again, soon?"
A wide smile spread across Gackt's face as he cleared his throat and he slowly leaned back in his chair, idly swirling bits of forgotten food on his plate. "Well, I have several long, boring meetings taking up most of my day tomorrow," his hand paused, fork in mid-air, "but perhaps, if you would not mind another late night meeting, you could stop by my house for a bit. I could fix us some home-made chili, if that would," their eyes caught again, "please you? Then afterwards we could discuss this movie business in more detail." He returned his attention to his meal. "I have all my notes and storyboard ideas with me at my home anyway."
Hyde took another deep swig of wine. "I'm afraid this may take alot of... convincing on your part." he said through his glass. " Just to give you fair warning. I would not lightly agree on something like this for just anyone."
A knowing smirk turned the corners of his mouth northward. "Oh, don't worry, I'm pretty good when it comes to convinceing people to see things my way." he said. "I almost always get what I want."
