Natalie is my orginal character. I do not own AFI nor do I make money off this. This is fiction writing for the enjoyment of others.
Natalie had only been working at this restaurant for a short time, and she was convienced it was the pinnacle of hell. It was a small vegan restaurant down the road from her new apartment in Marina Del Ray. It was closing time and she was just anxious to get out as quick as she could to go home and soak in her bath tub. As she was putting the broom away in the closet, she glanced up at the mirror on the door. She had her black and blonde hair pulled back into a low ponytail, you could really see the deep red streak she had put in just last week. Everyone had always said she looked so classic, she played to that a lot when she put on her make up. Thick eyeliner, and ruby red lines-although it had faded since she had worked a double, and her cheeks were barely kissed by the peach blush she had tried to put on during her “break.” Natalie was adjusting her hair when she heard the bell on the door ring, and growled to herself. You can never turn away a customer, even if it is 15 minutes before closing. She walked through the kitchen and out into the beat-nick looking dining room, it was so dark in their. It sent a bad message to people saying that all Vegans were evil. (Well some can be.) It was a gentlemen sitting in the corner both were the people like to sit to hide themselves, and what he was hiding from at this hour, who knew? She grabbed a menu and a pack of silverware from the bar and headed over to him with as much smile as she could muster. He was wearing a red shirt and jeans and his arms were completely covered in tattoos, and his black hair in a strange sort of cut but it was cool it was like a one sided layer cut but it was just straight down and the longest loch was just below his chin. She walked up and sat a menu in front of him and the silver beside it, taking out her pen and pad not looking up at the guy. Although she saw that he had his sunglasses on, what a dork. Who wears their sunglasses at night, and yes the song popped into her head were it would surely be the rest of the night. ( For those of you out of the loop-Corey Hart: I wear my sunglasses at night)
“Hi there, my name is Natalie I’ll be taking care of you tonight, I’ll give you a minute to look at the menu while I bring you your drink.” She vomited out for the millionth time today.
“Just a water, please.” He glanced up at her and returned her half hearted smile.
“Ok” she wrote a big ‘W’ on her pad, she had to turn all her sheets in at the end of the night otherwise she wouldn’t have bothered. She walked towards the bar to get the water. She called to Frank in the kitchen to prepare him for a order coming back. They were the only ones there so, they manned the place alone tonight. She put the water on tray and carried it to his table. He had taken his glasses off and sat them at the edge of the table, his face was turned to the wall as he was talking on the phone to someone. He gestured with his arms with a sentence and knocked them off the table, she sat his water down and bent down to pick them up and gravity did not play in her favor and everything fell out of her apron. She knelt down to pick everything up and she felt her shirt rise in the back.
“ I’m going to have to call you back.” He said. “ I like your tattoo on your back.”
“Thanks, “ Natalie said. Not looking up, picking up the loose change and straws that fell out of her apron. Pervert! She thought. “ Sorry, I’ll be with you in a minute, I’m almost done.”
But he had knelt beside her helping her gather the rest, ok now she felt bad for the whole pervert thing. She put the quarters, nickels, and the few things small things he found in hands and handed it back to her.
“Thanks so much I….” she looked up and knew she went into a small state of shock.
“Holy fuck, your Davey Havok from AFI.” She said in as much excitement as she could after working a double shift and could think of nothing more than going home but as of this moment not anymore. “Hey”
“ Hey yourself, that black bunny is awesome that you have on your back. Did you get the idea off our new album?” he asked as he stood and grabbed both her hands to help her up.
“ Not to disappoint you, but my first pet was a black bunny named Polly, I loved her so much that when I turned 18 I got her tattooed on me.”
“ Not the slightest bit, cute though.” He said and smiled.
She had gone into blubber mode, she had no idea what to say, and she just stood there smiling.
“Wow” he said. “You have the most amazing eyes I have ever seen.”
Sadly enough, it wasn’t the first time she had heard that. It was almost her trademark and every guy who she had ever came in contact with tried to weasel in some cheesy pick up line about her eyes, customers frequently made comments about them.
“ Thank you, I try.” They giggled. “ Um, well do you want to me to take you order now, um we have an awesome vegan fajita or…” she stammered fumbling in her apron to find her pen and pad.
“Oh yeah” he sat down opening the menu hastily searching for what he had in mind to order.
“I’ll have the Tempeh wrapped in grape leaves with the artichoke side, please dear.” He said and folded the menu back and handed it to her smiling. She wrote fast and took his menu, and smiled big for him. She walked back to the kitchen contemplating if what was going on was real. Was she waiting on Davey Havok and conversating friendly with him? You know that feeling that you’re being watched? It suddenly rushed over her, a few feet from his table. When she turned to the computer to put the order in, she saw a swift movement of hair and Davey scooping up his cell phone quickly. She just grinned and continued to put the order in. She ran back to the kitchen to Frank and with wide eyes explained who the order was for. To her dismay, he had no idea who I was talking about. While he was cooking reality set in and she was almost done with her cleaning except for rolling the silverware, crap. She threw her head back and walked over to the dish washer to get the dry silverware tub and carried it like a grudge to the table near the bar to roll, grabbing the napkins from the lower shelf on the way. She had just got settled in and rolled a few when Davey sat next to her with his water and cell phone in hand, sunglasses on his head.
“Need help?” he asked.
“Oh no thanks though, hold on I have to go lock the door its 9 o’clock.” She went to the cash register and grabbed the key out. She was beginning watched again, although she had no discreet way to look and know for sure, until she heard the clanging of silverware on the table. Davey was rolling the silverware into the linen napkins like a pro even though she asked him not to. She walked hurriedly back to the table after turning the sign to close and clicking the door locked tight.
“I thought I said…” she began.
“I know but, you look like you had a rough night, you seem like you might appreciate a little help now and then.” He said.
“How do you know how…” she asked a little puzzled.
“I wasn’t all was a glamorous rock star.” He said. She nodded and sat down and started rolling along with him. They began that small talk with the lovely question he posed first of how long she had lived there. It was kind of obvious she wasn’t a true Californian, she still had a hint of her southern accent left in her voice from growing up in a small town in North Carolina, she had moved there after high school five years ago to pursue an acting career which obviously wasn’t moving fast enough.
“ORDER’S UP!” Frank called from the back and dinged the bell. Natalie rushed up for the back grabbing his plate from the window and sprinkling the garnish on. She pushed the silverware aside and sat his plate in front of him.
“Eat, now, I’ll get the rest.” She said. He seemed hungry he dug in immediately with no protest whatsoever. But they kept up their conversation. He seemed very interested in her, when she would say something funny he would brush her bare shoulder, or when he was confused about something her would put his face in his hand, and put his hand on her thigh and lightly patted her between each leg of his questions. When she answered to his likely, he would slowly return to his food. Finally, she finished the tons of silverware and Davey was full. Just minutes earlier, she was in such a hurry to go home and now she didn’t seem to care so much. She was really enjoying her conversation with Davey, and her tiredness seems to disappear while she was talking to him. She was totally relaxed around him now, through the laughing and the outburst of “OMIGAHS!” when they agreed on something extremely. Frank came out of the kitchen with a disgruntled look on his face, so she let him out of the door to go home.
“I guess its time for you to go home then?” he asked.
She sighed, “Yeah, “she said a little meek as she was printing his receipt from his credit card. He got up to sign it; he bent over the bar scribbled a few things and folded it in his hand. He looked at her like he wanted to say something but then shook his head.
“It’s really been a pleasure talking to you; I mean really, you’re an amazing person.” He said curling his fingers out and over the paper in his hand.
“I have to say, you have been the most pleasant customer I have ever waited on.” She said folding her arms across her chest. It pumped her breast up through the black spaghetti strap tank top she was wearing, shit, don’t entice him. Of course he glanced a bit; he pursed his lips and sighed, then scratched his head looking around nervously.
“Let me hit the lights and we can get out of here,” Natalie said.
She walked behind the bar and to the very back of the kitchen, the smell of bleach hitting her in the face from Frank mopping the floor before leaving. As she clicked the lights she heard Davey tapping the counter with a pen. Walking back through complete darkness, she could just make him out by the street light as he seemed like he was talking to himself, it was really cute.
“Ok, well I need that paper in your hand, please sir.” She said.
“Don’t call me sir,” she spoke a little softly with a look of clemency.
“Why?” she said. He moved closer to her, oh crap, she thought. He’s really close, just how comfortable did they get and she not realize it. He took her hands, he hand soft hands, and he must have used the lotion in the bathroom when he washed his hands after his meal.
“Because you are too good for that.” And he rolled the paper in her hands and smiled. She let herself breathe again and gave him a nervous pursed smile. She couldn’t cash in till tomorrow anyway, so she stuffed it into her apron and turned towards the door.
“Shall we?” she asked.
“Yeah” he agreed.
They walked to the door in quiet thanks to the awkward moment they just had even though it was a nice thing to say. She hit the buttons on the alarm and pushed Davey out of the door with a “ GOGOGOGOGO”. It was always in her routine to remove her apron and take down her hair as soon as she hit the door, and Davey was watching intently even though she really wasn’t paying much attention.
“Your hair is really long and thick, its beautiful,…” he said. Then hesitated to say, “ Its matches you perfectly.”
“ Thanks, I. Thanks” she stammered out. “ I…well come on you know your gorgeous.” She paused. “ Well I guess this is good bye.”
“I guess, yeah” he said nervously. “ Do you need a ride or anything? I mean my car’s right there, I can, you know.”
“ Oh it ok there’s a bus coming around, I drive but trying to save money, gas prices and all. Thank you very kindly for offering.”
“ You take the BUS! As gorgeous as you are, this late at night, no please let me take you so I can sleep tonight. Please.” He begged. She seemed like she couldn’t say no to those beautiful brown eyes. Was this an attempt to spend more time with her? She had no idea why she was hesitating, this hot famous guy was offering to take her home and she was refusing, WHY? (Ask yourself..Would you?)
“Alright, sure you don’t mind?” she asked timidly. He had crossed in front of her, hit the button to deactivate the alarm on his black SUV, and opened the door for her to get in. She smiled and rolled her eyes walking towards him, he extended his hand to help her in. Damn, she thought, he could pass for a southern gent. It smelled of lavender in his car, the plush seat felt so good on her back side seeing that she had been on her feet most of the day. He got in and cranked the car and a hardcore band that she didn’t recognize was blaring out of his speakers. Not that she didn’t like loud music but at this moment it was not pleasant. He immediately hit the mute button and winced.
“Sorry” he said. “ Now, where do you live?”
“Summer Winds Apartments, on Beach Blvd, you know where that is?”
“Yes actually, I have a friend from here which is why I am, and he lives on a court down the road from you. So off we go.”
They drove from a bit and chit chatted about the band that she heard and she asked him questions about his career choice. She loved listening to him talk, he was so articulate and he cared desperately about what he did. She wondered if he put that much effort into everything he did, maybe even making love to her. Where did that come from she thought? Then came the roller coaster of thoughts, was he thinking the same thing? Do I just want him because he is who he is? No, not at all. Surely they had made a connection when they spoke. Was she just thinking this because she had not had sex in 4 years and it had been the one and only person she had ever been with? If they did do it, would she be good enough for him? AAAAAHHHH she had to stop or she would start sweating. They pulled into her complex and she pointed him to the back where her apartment was, she was lucky enough to have one that was facing the beach. He pulled in next to her black jeep wrangler, she was bit taken aback when he turned the car off. He looked at her and smiled nervously, she returned it. They seemed to be doing a lot of that tonight. Here came the roller coaster again, ask him to come up? Did he want to? Would he think her promiscuous? Then it derailed.
“Any plans tonight?” he asked finally.
“No maybe take a hot bath, or something, no work for me tomorrow. I have the whole day to do nothing.”
“I’m sure your excited. Yeah, I’m on a little hiatus myself, nothing to do for a while. A long while, especially, tonight.” He said. Fuck the roller coaster just do it Natalie thought to herself.
“Well, no sense in that,” she paused. “ Would you like to come in for some coffee or something?” He seemed to be beaming, she couldn’t really tell it was kind of dark.
“I would love to.” He unbuckled his seat belt and told her to wait so he could open her door. Beep. The car was locked. The walked the pavement to her apartment and up the stairs, third floor, it’s the best as quoted in Pretty Woman, although it was a bitch to move into alone. Natalie was thankful she cleaned up the previous day and her house always smelled good, she was obsessed with the smell of cherry blossom so it was everywhere. It fiddled with her keys trying to find the key to her door, she had to many keys for no reason at all and it times like this it was a bit of a bother. Finally, she found it and clicked the door open.
HA! Working on Chapter 2 right now-to finish. Anyone who wants to wrote this in Davey's perspective please feel more than welcome to do so.
