Gackt stared gloomily out of the window. Surprises were quite nice, but sometimes they could be quite unwelcome. He’d been working so much lately, that taking a break seemed quite out of the question.
“Gac-chan? Are you unhappy?” Hyde’s voice shook him from his thoughts. “You have been working so much, you do need time away.”
“But America? Why?” Gackt bit back a harsh remark. “Why this place you are taking me?”
“They say it is a place where celebrities here take vacations. I thought you might welcome some quite time.”
That was quite true. Living in a house with others does tend to get quite tedious. Time to one’s self seems very little, if there is any at all to be had. Gackt did think the break as nice, but just at the wrong time.
The car drove through snow so deep that the drifts on th sides of the road were taller than most men. They nearly obscured the scenery. They soon turned down a small lane, and to a resort. The driver got out of the car and opened the door. Gackt blinked at the sudden brightness and hastily put on a pair of sunglasses.
“Agh.. So bright..” He held up a hand to block the light from his face. “ It’s not sunny, why so bright?”
“Snow, Gac-chan. It makes it much brighter than it seems.” Hyde replied simply. “Makes it beautiful, too.”
True enough, Gackt’s eyes had adjusted to the brightness, and he could see the resort was in the middle of nowhere. Off to the side, nestled in amongst trees and small hills were small houses. A clomping of hooves could be heard as a horse drawn sleigh appeared from stables not too far behind the building they stood in front of.
The driver began to load the luggage onto the back of the sleigh and helped Gackt step into the seat. Hyde had gone inside as Gackt sat down. He picked up a blanket and looked at it. As the car disappeared from sight, the sleigh driver turned back.
“It’s cold here, the blanket is to keep you warm. I’m going to take you and your friend on a small tour of the grounds, then to your cabin.” Gackt wrapped up in the blanket, and looked at the driver. “Your friend should be back, just be patient.”
Soon enough, Hyde walked out holding a small item in his hand and a paper. The driver helped him inside. Gackt unwrapped the blanket and allowed Hyde to sit next to him. The driver made sure both were guarded against the chill then snapped the reigns. The horses began to walk slowly, their ears flickering in the breeze. Large snowflakes began to fall, though the only sound
to be heard was the dull thud of hooves on snowy ground, and the bells on the sleigh. The driver pointed off to the mountains, and both men looked.
“Over there is the Ski Lodge, but I doubt either of you may find that interesting. At this time, we have quite a few celebrities, and they tend to show off. In your cabin will be a list of numbers for you to call for things. All cabins have groceries stocked once a week. Yours was stocked this morning. If the weather gets bad, we have had power outages, but all cooking and heating is gas, so hopefully you won’t get too cold.
“What about food? Won’t it go bad?” Gackt surprised himself by speaking.
“If you don’t constantly open the freezer or fridge, things should keep. If you are unsure, just put them outside in the snow. Current daytime temperatures are around 28 degrees so your food should keep nicely. Just make sure you put it in the plastic boxes to keep the wildlife out. We don’t expect many outages now that we have underground electrical lines. That keeps the snow from knocking it out.”
Hyde and Gackt exchanged baffled looks. The driver laughed and explained.
“Sometimes the snow fall weighs down tree limbs, and they fall onto the lines. We have had some heavy snows this season so far, and power has stayed. We don’t expect anything, but just be aware it can happen.”
Both men silently gave thanks for learning English. The driver seemed to ramble on about the location of the stables, the large cabin used for dining, and various points of interest. He took a turn down a freshly plowed path. A small cabin came into view, completely obscured from the rest of the resort. Gackt looked at the cabin, a small smile on his face.
“You didn’t tell me it was this secluded. I could have brought Beru(1).” He smiled. “She would love to play in the snow.”
Gackt turned to look at Hyde, smiling at his friend. His back was turned to the cabin, and Hyde kept his face expressionless. A figure circled around the sleigh, keeping well out of sight. Hyde chuckled in spite of himself. Gackt looked out at the thick tree line surrounding the cabin. He turned back to Hyde.
“We are not alone, are we?” Gackt could see foot prints in the snow, but he hoped they were from the grounds keepers when the cabin was prepped for their stay. “Someone is here.”
Gackt turned again, this time he could almost feel Hyde holding his breath. Slowly he turned to look behind him when a large, poorly formed snowball sailed up and hit him square in the face. He took off his sunglasses and wiped the snow from his face. Hyde sat next to him, howling with laughter. From just behind the trees, You stepped up, laughing. From behind the sleigh,
Chacha stood up. Snow covered his hands as he formed another snowball. Gackt glared at Chacha for several seconds, then laughed. He scooped up some of the snow and turned to Hyde.
“Oh, no.. I didn’t know.. I promise..” Hyde shrieked as Gackt stuffed the snow down his smaller friend’s shirtfront.
He vaulted off the sleigh and gathered up a large amount of snow. He paused, noticing how nicely the snow packed. He formed a ball and turned around. First he faced Chacha, then turned back to You. You started to run, but Gackt took off after him. Catching up with his best friend he threw the ball. The snowball made impact on the back of the violinist’s head. Gackt never paused, but turned to chase a now running Chacha. The guitarist flew across the snow, running as if demons were chasing him.
Gackt paused long enough to gather up more snow. Then he took off running again. In no time, he caught up with the blonde. He grabbed him around the waist and both tumbled to the ground. Gackt took up a fresh handful of snow and dropped it in Chacha’s face.
“Ha Pay back isn’t so nice ” Gackt grinned then stood up. He held out his hand. Chacha took it and stood.
Hyde stood by the front of the cabin. You stood next to him, both laughing.
“You really should have seen the look on your face, Pu-pu. You looked as if you were gonna kill someone.” Chacha smiled. “It’s cold out here, let’s go inside. I don’t think we have eaten yet, and dinner might be nice.”
You rolled his eyes as they made their way into the cabin. To be truthful, they hadn’t eaten yet, Chacha’s memory wasn’t faulting him. Inside the door, the driver was setting down the last load of luggage. Hyde took out his wallet and handed the man a few bills. The man smiled and nodded to them.
“You boys have a nice vacation.” He started out the door, then stopped. “If you need anything, just ring the main office, we’ll get someone out here.” He left, closing the door behind him.
Gackt peeked around the entry way. He’d already pulled off his coat and was hanging it on a peg, then began to pull off his boots. The others were doing the same. He walked through the rooms, smiling to himself. There were four large bedrooms, a large living room, a spacious kitchen. The bathroom really took him by surprise. A shower stall was in one corner of the room, and a large tub took up half the wall next to it. He left the room and went back out to join the others. Hyde was standing outside one of the bedrooms.
“We think you should have this one. It has fewer windows, and all.” Hyde smiled. “It has it’s own bathroom, too. The only room to have one. We all thought you should have it.”
Gackt smiled as Chacha and You carried his luggage into the room. Gackt sat down on the bed and began to remove his cold and now wet clothes. Playing in the snow was fun, but not when one had expensive clothes on.
“Pu-pu, why don’t you go take a hot bath while we get some food ready?” Chacha wrapped an arm around Gackt’s shoulders.
“We all were playing in the snow, we should all do so. We don’t want to get sick on this vacation.” Gackt replied.
Gackt finished undressing, hanging the clothing around the room to allow it to dry. He walked into the bathroom, but stopped hearing footsteps behind him. He turned and saw Chacha hanging behind the others.
“Something bothering you, Onee-chan?” He asked his friend
“Well, two showers and four people? That’s not good, half of us get a hot shower, the others have to wait.” Chacha sighed. “I’ll wait. It’s okay. I shouldn’t have hit you with the snowball.”
“Why don’t you just join me? It really isn’t a big deal anyway.”
Chacha grinned and began to undress. His movements, slow and deliberate, keeping his friend’s attention. Gackt fought hard to peel his eyes away. Chacha watched Gackt walk into the bathroom then grinned.
“This shower will be hot, I’ll make sure of that."
