“Giving up on love”
Aly Michalka sighed as she slammed the front door, another in a series of endless dates had just gone down the dumper and spectacularly so. She knew her sister would be waiting in the living room of their family home.
“So how was it?” AJ asked springing up from out of nowhere.
Aly was used to her sister’s unexpected appearances.
“Horrible, heinous, hellish, do you want me to continue down the alphabet of adjectives?” Aly asked.
“Another one?”
“What do you expect, this town is full of obnoxious pretty boys who are obsessed with themselves.” She said.
“I thought you and Jason were going to make it work.” AJ said.
“Jared. And it wasn’t going to work, he was a vegan and he took me to a carnival.” Aly said sneering the last word as she remembered the mustard on the sleeve of her white tunic dress and the fact that some kid had spit gum in her hair on the Ferris wheel.
“You got something against carnivals?” her sister asked.
“No, only the fact that the only guys interested in me are circus freaks.” She stomped ahead up the stairs.
“Aly are you home?” her mother Carrie asked.
“Yes.” She said through clenched teeth.
Her mother came out of the bedroom she shared with Mark Aly’s father.
“Date didn’t go well?” Carrie asked.
“It went peachy…” Aly said.
“I’m sure you’ll have better luck next time.” Carrie said soothingly.
“There isn’t going to be a next time, every since I was fourteen I thought it would be cool to have a boyfriend. And since then just look at the losers I’ve went out with since then. Casey, the Buddist. Ryan the skaterboi. Adam the cheapskate. Leonard the geek. Finn the goth queen.” Aly said listing her boyfriends on her fingers.
“I blame you for that.” she pointed at her sister.
“What? You went out with him…” AJ snickered.
“He was your friend first.”
“I told you not to go out with him.” AJ defended.
“You never said he was GAY! Not that that’s a bad thing but that was a waste of his time and mine.” Aly said.
“Who’s gay now?” Mark asked coming out of the bedroom.
He looked like he’d been sleeping, Aly felt badly for waking him because she knew he had to be at work early.
“Finn…” AJ explained, “Aly’s rating about her relationships.”
“Again?” he asked.
“What do you mean again? Daddy…” Aly whined, “I do NOT talk about this all the time.”
Her family just looked at her with the same expression, maybe she DID talk about her romantic failures.
“I think I’m going to take a break from dating, focus on singing for a while…that’s all…” she concluded.
“Oh, joy. Maybe all these random guys can quit calling the house all the time and disappearing after you dump them.” Mark said.
“I’ll be glad of that too.” Carrie agreed.
“It’s not like I’m prostituting myself or anything, I’m trying to find the one. Seventy percent of women search their entire lives for true love and never find it, I don’t want that to happen to me.” Aly said.
“Aly, honey I think your right maybe you should concentrate on your career right now. You and AJ have a good thing going. Boys shouldn’t interfere with your dream.” Mark said.
“Dad’s right boys are a waste of time.” AJ said.
“That’s only because you don’t like ANY.” Aly countered.
“Your father didn’t mean that boys were a waste of time.–” Carrie started.
“Yes I did.” Mark cut in.
“No, you didn’t,” Carrie smiled gently, “When the right guy comes along you’ll know it. I promise you that Aly.”
“I don’t know, I’m giving up on love. It’s all a pathetic waste of time.” Aly said heading down the hall into her bedroom.
She didn’t bother turning on the light but instead flipped on her radio and flopped down on her bed.
It was past eleven so slow jams were playing on the local radio station. When she heard a sappy love ballad she wanted to flick the radio off, but that meant she would have to sit alone I the darkness reminded of how alone she was.
She rolled over and went to sleep with a defiant scowl on her face. She woke up to the sound of the demo she’d made with her sister playing, it took a few minutes for her to realize that it was actually playing on the radio and not on the CD.
She screamed falling out of bed, which brought her mother and sister into the room.
AJ began to ask what was wrong with her and her mother began a rant about sleeping in her clothes.
“LISTEN!”
They stopped their rants to hear the song.
“OH MY GOD!” AJ screamed.
“Is that Rush?” their mother questioned.
“Yes!” Aly squeaked.
They all jumped around the room.
“That was the new single by the up and coming sister act Aly and AJ, they are from right here in Los Angeles.” The radio announcer said once the song finished.
“I know this is very exciting for you girls but you two need to get up and get ready for school.” Carrie said.
“This has got to be the most exciting moment of my life, except for when I watched a clip of Madonna performing Like a Virgin on the ‘84 VMA’s. That was exciting in another way entirely.” AJ giggled.
Aly rolled her eyes she wasn’t looking forward to school. They went to a really great upscale private school which unfortunately, Jared and a lot of Aly’s other flavors of the week attended as well.
She stomped into the bathroom that adjoined her room with her sister’s. She showered and shampooed her hair remembering the gum in it from the night before and got ready for school, she was thankful that it was her senior year of high school and she’d decided that college was definitely not in her future at least right now.
She dressed in her uniform she felt like an extra in a Britney Spears video every time she donned it. She went downstairs to find her mother and sister enjoying breakfast.
“Hey Aly…want some French toast?” AJ said around a mouthful of the food.
“No, thanks…I’m going to have a glass of milk.” Aly said going to the fridge and pouring herself a glass of milk.
“Let’s go Squirt.” She told her sister once she’d finished her milk and her dry toast.
She grabbed her bag off the counter.
“Coming…” AJ mumbled around another mouthful of food.
“Have fun at school girls, I love you both.” Carrie said.
Aly drove them to school, the only available parking spot was next to a black Mercedes Jeep. Jared’s car, and what luck he hadn’t yet gotten out of it.
Aly parked her little sliver Lexus, next to it and sighed relenting to the conversation she knew they were going to have.
“I’m going to go find Miley and Emily.” AJ said, getting out of the car when she saw the driver’s side door of the Mercedes open.
“No, you are not leaving me here– ” Aly said.
“Hey Aly.” Jared sidled up to the car.
“Hi,” Aly said fighting the urge to roll her eyes she smiled instead.
“I had a great time last night…” Jared said smiling.
He was really cute, she should have known better than to pick a cute one. It would make what she had to do harder when she saw the hurt and confusion in his big blue eyes.
“Uh, about that…” Aly had some practice with break ups, she’d ended so many relationships before they began, she was the only girl she knew who’d been out on 600 dates and hadn’t yet gone to second base.
“I didn’t have such a good time.” she revealed.
“Is it because of the mustard?” he asked.
“We’ve got nothing in common.” Aly stated.
“Is it the vegan thing?”
“Yes, and the mustard and your hair and EVERYTHING! It’s me Jared, not you. I really don’t want to date right now; I’ve got some stuff going on.”
“Are you doing this because you and your sister have a record deal now?”
“What?”
“Are you dumping me because you think you have a shot with Orlando Bloom or something?”
“What are you damn loopy?” she asked.
“Don’t play innocent with me, Aly you’ve always been stuck up. You didn’t notice me until I joined Varsity Track. You’re a grade A bitch.”
“And here I was trying to let you down easy. You stupid, self important, arrogant, nature freak, you’re sitting alongside my car telling me that I’m a bitch. You haven’t seen me be a bitch yet Jared. Now get the fuck away from me before I LOSE IT!” she shouted.
“Bye.” He said walking away.
She sighed; she didn’t want things to end this way. She got out of the car and walked, into the school just as the bell was ringing.
She found Colby Johnson her best friend leaning against her locker wearing his modified school uniform the blue plaid pants with suspenders connected to them with a button up white oxford shirt on and wing tipped shoes on his feet and a bow tie around his collar. His blue blazer was slung over his shoulder. He had sweat around his unruly curls and he was sunglasses inside. Typical Colby fashion she smiled as she made her way down the hall.
“What it do Baby? I heard the new song I love it.” Colby said.
“Hey Colby,” she said.
“I take it you talked to Jared.”
“Yes, I had a wonderful conversation with that prick.”
“He made the mistake of calling me a bitch, now I have to devote all afternoon to his social ruin.” Aly said.
Colby wore a concerned expression that Aly could see despite the glasses on his eyes. He knew she hated the break ups.
“I think what you need now is a hug from your best friend and some congratulations.” He said.
She smiled and moved closer to him sliding her arms around his neck, and his arms went around her.
“You’re so good to be Colby, you’re the best friend a girl could have.” She whispered in his ear before softly kissing his cheek.
Classes went by with ease with Colby’s help that is; ruining Jared’s rep was surprisingly easy. For some reason Aly seemed to command a score of girls, in school that she wasn’t really friends with a bunch of mindless drones who all were really sweet she was sure, that were only concerned about the latest gossip, in her life and everyone else’s.
All she had to do was mention that he was a horrible kisser in the girl’s room and it was all over school. She’d dropped hints that he was boring and that she thought his package was small, a rumor which Colby confirmed was really true. She couldn’t help but giggle over that.
After school Colby needed a ride home, he’d totaled his truck again and she had to give AJ’s little friends Miley and Emily a ride home. She liked to call them Heckle and Jeckle. They went to studio to meet with Mr. Savage at their record label.
