It had been years since I had been home to Los Angeles. I think in a way, I tried to stay away from the city. The only reason I was coming home this time was to bury my father. I tried to close my eyes and get a little sleep before the plane landed but the turbulence shook me awake. I wrapped my arms around me in a tight hug. In the corner of my eye, I saw a head of brown hair wiggle in the seat. “Ian sit still. We are almost there baby!” He looked up at me with those four year old brown eyes. “Want to get off!” I grabbed my pride and joy and sat him on my lap. “See the lights. That is LA! Auntie Susie is so excited to see you.” I kissed him as he laid his head on my shoulder.

The plane landed smoothly at LAX. Susie said she would be there to greet us. I was excited to see my old friend. We walked off the plane. Ian held my hand tight. I then felt him let go. “AUNTIE SUSIE!!!” He ran over to my old friend. She picked him up and swung him around. “I missed you peanut!” She showered him with kisses. “Stop it Auntie.” She smiled and put him down. I ran over to her. “Hey girl!” We hugged as Ian pulled on my leg. “Want to go, momma!” We both laughed as I put the little impatient boy in his stroller. As I pushed him through the terminal, Susie whispered in my ear. “God, he looks so much like him.” I turned to her in a frantic flash. “Don’t say that. Please, don’t say anything like that again.” Susie half-heartedly smiled at me. “Dani, it is so obvious. You can’t hide it especially to the guys when you see them.” I felt my heart stop at that moment. “What do you mean see the guys?” Susie hugged my shoulders. “I was talking to Sean and he said that everyone is getting together for the holidays and that it would be wonderful to have you there.” I stopped in my tracks. “DID YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT WHAT I WOULD WANT?” I could feel the tears in my eyes. I was not ready to see him. Susie stood directly in front of me and wiped the tears out of my eyes. “Dani, I know this will be difficult for you, but it is time. Don’t you think he would want to know his son? It is not fair Dani to take that from him.” I shook from her kind embrace. “He did not want kids. Ian would be in the way of his career. That is why I did not tell him. It would break my heart to see Ian hurt. I can’t do this, Sus.” She smiled and started to push the stroller. “We will talk about it later.”

Susie’s house was located in a nice suburb of LA. It had a park across the street that Ian immediately picked up on. “PARK! SWINGS!” I kissed his forehead as he struggled to get free. “PARK! MOMMA! PARK!” I dragged him to the stairs of Susie’s house. “OK OK. Susie we are going to the park. ” We ran over to the park hand-in-hand. He ran up to a bunch of kids. I sat on a park bench and wrapped my sweater around me. Every once in a while, those brown eyes would look at me and smile. My heart melted at every look. Then fear took over my warm heart. I knew deep inside that he looked like Orlando. I tried so hard to forget that but the more and more Ian grew he took on his father’s appearance. In the distance, I heard my name. I turned around to see Elijah and Sean coming towards me. Elijah picked me up and swung me around. “Dani! I missed you so much!” I hugged him tight. He put me down only for Sean to pick me up. “Hey beautiful!” He put me down on the soft grass. “My God! I missed you two fools. How are things going?” Elijah smiled big. “Things are great. I am so glad you came for the holidays. It just wouldn’t be the same without you.” I smiled big. I started to say something when a small hand pulled on my pants.

“Momma?” I saw two set of eyes drop to the little boy next to my leg. Sean immediately dropped and talked to the little angel hiding behind my leg. Elijah looked up and searched my eyes. “Dani?” I stopped him knowing far well that he knew my secret. “Ian, this is Elijah and Sean. They are two friends of mine.” Ian came out from hiding and took Sean’s hand. “Good. Come push me.” Ian dragged Sean over to a swing. I sat down on the park bench and pulled my legs up to my chest. “Dani, does he know?” I looked at Elijah’s concerned face. I tried to act stupid. “Who?” Elijah pointed to the little carbon copy of his father. “Dani! You know who. He doesn’t does he?” I swallowed hard. “Lij, look, no Orlando does not know. When Ian came along, Orlando said that marriage and kids were not in his plans. I could not do that to him. I also was protecting my son.” Elijah face turned to anger. “From who Dani? You and both know that Orlando would never hurt that boy … especially if he knew that was his son. Do you know that it broke his heart that you just up and left? It took him years to get over that. I am not sure that he is even completely over you. Now, you show up with his child, the child he knows nothing about. That is not fair, Dani!” I felt the tears welling up in my eyes. “Lij, please I need you to be my friend. It is difficult for me to be here. I also know that the subject will come up and I need you to be there for me.” He hugged my shoulder and kissed the top of my head. “You know I am always here for you.”
