CHAPTER ONE
Sofia lifted a hand, pushing back the blades of dark hair falling across her small face. September winds rushed coolly through the narrow side street. While her escort locked the car, her eyes travelled with trepidation up the old, beautiful exterior of the building. It was hard to believe this housed a modern recording studio. As her escort proffered a hand to the doors, she noticed a discreet plaque that confirmed she was in the right place. Once again, she wondered how she got here. The streets of Rome. It was a world away from the modest charity work she did back home.
Eyes glazed over, she was completely out of touch with her surroundings. Autumn in Rome. Recording a song for charity. With Josh Groban. Was she absolutely certain this wasn’t just a really long, very beautiful dream?!
“Sofia?” A warm hand lingered on her arm. Lifting her head, she stared up into the face of her inquisitor, focus slowly returning. Dark brown eyes smiled. Josh nodded behind her,
“They’re ready for us to do another take.”
“Oh.” Putting down the cup of water, she stood, pleased and on edge as he remained close. She was stood inside a small booth, which was made of clear plastic from the waist up. To her left was the sound booth, where the engineers sat and opposite her, stood Josh, in his own booth.
The engineer issued a few friendly instructions and they were ready for a take. Breathing steadily, she composed herself, trying to remember everything the voice coach she had spent last week with, had told her. Halfway through the harmonies, Josh began to laugh. He’d made a mistake,
“Sorry,” holding up a hand to the engineers, he turned his smiling face to Sofia and rolled his eyes, “don’t you hate it when that happens?” She couldn’t help smile. He was so natural and down to earth. It was a delight working with him.
Another take and Josh waved a hand. He bantered with the engineers. It was the passionate part of the song. They’d spent two days in the studio. She’d not realised how long it took to create one song. This was the beginning of her second week in Rome and from the modest but pretty hotel, to the food at the café she’d found to eat at, everything was a delight. She’d seen some of the sights. Josh’s assistant, Meg, had taken her out a couple of evenings. She enjoyed the days most, because that was when she was with Josh.
As she listened to him discussing technical details with the engineers, she found some corner of the studio to stare at. Out the corner of her eye, she could still make out his tall, lean frame. The dark curls, the long fingered hands, shaping his thoughts as he expressed them. She hadn’t bothered with denial. She was thirty years old and had been single for two years. Not only did she love his voice and find him funny and sweet, she had enough lust bubbling up inside her to put a football team in intensive care. It wasn’t a crush. Those were for teenagers. She wanted him with the depth of feeling only a woman knew. And he had no idea whatsoever.
“I get it, I get it!” Turning to Sofia, his smile softened when he found her eyes misted over. Her face peaceful and still. She did that a lot. Wandered off somewhere. Clearing his throat, he smiled as she blushed, “they want us to put more passion in our voice on the second line,” he informed her, winking briefly before lowering his head. Sofia cleared her throat, looking over at him ready for the music to begin. He said they had to sing looking into each other’s eyes, as it was a duet, because people would be able to hear it in their voice.
Sure enough, when the line came around, Josh sang with all his heart, suddenly throwing himself up against the perspex and writhing as though he were trying to make love to her, through it. She burst out laughing, ruining the take. Which of course had been his intention. The engineers jeered at him, waiting for them to do another take. Before they could, Josh’s laughing face fell on his assistant Meg, who’d wandered in while the recording light was off. She was on her way out, when Sofia lifted her head from the lyrics page and smiled warmly at her,
“Meg. There’s nothing in the diary for tonight, is there?” Turning back to Josh, Meg frowned,
“You have some things to approve, no visits though, why?” The artist smiled winningly,
“Can I do them tomorrow? I haven’t spent any time with Sofia outside the studio. I want to take her to dinner.”
Sofia tried to keep her mouth from falling open as he looked over, kind of sheepishly she realised in shock. Eyes seeking, he lifted his shoulders tightly,
“What do you think? Would you like to go eat once we’re done here?” Sofia nodded, because her voice took a moment to work,
“Sure… that would be… sure, I’d like that,” she replied, “I don’t have anything really smart to wear though,” Frowning, Josh shrugged,
“It’s fine, McDonalds just off the Spanish Steps is really accommodating with their dress code.” Rolling her eyes, she sighed,
“What time?” He grinned, when some of her edge came back. Good. She felt stronger like this. It was time to stop fawning over him, like a puppy. A tall puppy with beautiful eyes and long legs that did justice to jeans, in all the right places. Focus… she caught the tail end of a small place he apparently loved, nearby. Great. Smart but casual clothes then, “eight is good,” she added, when he suggested a time.
Meg said she’d collect the paperwork and bring it to the studio tomorrow. They returned to recording, and Sofia finally began to grasp the harder parts. Which she was pleased about. Singing in another language was new to her. The next couple of hours flew by. She was grateful. Because whatever happened when she got home, she could worry about later.
She was going out to dinner with Josh. It would probably be a perfectly innocent evening, but the idea of them being alone was making her excited. She’d actually have a legitimate reason to stare into those eyes across a small table for a few hours. What she really wanted to do right now was run around the studio squealing…
