Title: The Time of Our Lives
Chapter Title: Wholesome Family Plot
Rating: NC-17
Random Quote: “Everything’s Eventual” Steven King
She watched the crew run aimlessly around, rushing to fix the last minute errors. How did she end up agreeing to a spot on a Nickelodeon show? She had seen her name in lights and was not really thrilled with that out come. To many people, to many demands, not enough privacy and yet here she was waiting to be the “out of place cousin that was going to move in with her weather man uncle after her mother had died and her own father went crazy.” Such a wholesome family plot that was.
Lena Gourley rubbed her neck and sighed, this was going to be a long day. Her hair and make-up were finished and it was barley 6 am. She had felt a little odd even trying out for the part, she was nearly 23 and the part was for a 17 year old girl in high school. Granted 22 was not that old but there had been 17 year olds in line for the audition, she knew this because they had told her while they asked for her autograph. That did not make her feel any better about being there.
She had several roles as various female action heroes but she could not seem to get away from her Emmy award winning role in a movie that was written based on the events of her childhood. She played herself and won an award for being Lena Gourley. To her that had not seemed right either but her agent was thrilled, as was her brother. Her parents had long since stopped talking to her, they felt she was wasting the schooling they had spent so much money on, schooling she had never wanted. Though now she was going back for her PHD in psychology, the schooling had saved her life in more ways than one.
The warmth of a hand on her lower back caused her to jump and the reason she had even agreed to try out for this role looked her right in the eyes. Drake Bell. His slightly crooked smile and sparkling ebony eyes pulled her from her hateful thoughts of Hollywood.
“Hey, Lena?”
“That’s me. Drake I assume?”
“Yep. Are you excited about today?”
“Do you want an honest answer?”
“Well yeah.”
“No I’m not excited, I got in about two hours ago, flew on the Red Eye from Pittsburgh, I haven’t slept in over 24 hours and was attacked by a group of teeny boppers in the air port. My driver here smelled like old cheese and I was poked in the eye about seven times during make-up. I’m excited about the prospect of sleeping in my hotel bed. Then when we have a day off I am excited about finding a place to reside that isn’t a hotel. I’m not excited I’m rather miserable and I am sorry about that.”
His eyes were wide in shock but then he just laughed. “Well I’m excited that you are here. I nearly died when they told me you were going to play Gina. I loved your character in “Death Strike.” Do you really fight like that or did you have to learn it for the movie?”
“I fight.” She was trying to be nice but she could not bring herself to be civil. All she wanted to do was get this day done with and all he seemed to want to do is talk. It annoyed her beyond belief. She was actually happy when the director called the cast to places.
She stood on the “outside” of their front door her arms full of stage luggage with broken latches. The idea was that when she entered the luggage would slip from her arms and their contents would spill out on to the living room floor, a gag that was grossly over used but still brought laughter when it was done correctly.
Her character was Josh’s biological cousin, Drake’s step cousin. Her mother, according to the script, was killed in a car accident and her father called her “Uncle Walter” and asked if Gina could live with them for a time while he got things under control at home. Which Lena took as he lost his mind and Lena’s character made him think too much of his dead wife. Then again this was never really stated and Lena had a problem reading too far into fictional characters and creating lives for them that really just did not exist. It was her only out in this business, it kept her mind running and that’s what she needed.
The crew proceeded to dump a few buckets of water on her small frame and she shivered. A very long day indeed. A doorbell rang and she heard Josh run for the door screaming, in his usual fashion, that he would get the door. He did that too much, it took away from the humor of the scream, she thought. The door opened before her and she stomped her wet frame into the living room area.
She was suppose to fall forward onto a mat and the luggage was to spill out all over the ground, but what things that are suppose to happen very rarely do. The water that covered her body dripped onto the hardwood floors and the heels she was in were not conducive to walking on wet hardwood. Lena took a step and flew backwards, the luggage shot up into the air and all she could do was squeak in a panicked fear. She watched helplessly as her feet flew out from under her, her body parallel to the ground. She did not even have time to react enough to put her arms behind her to brace herself and she slammed down on the ground with a loud thud. She covered her face with her arms as the luggage came pouring down around her.
“CUT! Lena are you ok? That was Fantastic WONDERFUL! I wish you had told me you were going to go back instead of forward we would have moved the mat. INCREDIBLE! We are taking that one. Fantastic! I known you were the perfect person for this role so creative, so independent…”
“So sore I can’t feel my ass.” Lena added as Josh helped her to her feet. Her hand went to the back of her head where she felt a large lump from where her head hit the hard floor. ‘Nice’ she thought to herself and as she straitened her cloths. She laid back down on the ground to finish the scene, longing for lunch break.
“Ouch! At least I didn’t pack my knife set.” Stage laughing followed her line and she and Josh started to pack her bags back up, broken latches and all. She couldn’t wait for lunch.
Several hours later she sat alone picking at her salad and reading her abnormal psychology book for her on-line test she had at the end of the week. She felt the presents of another individual and looked up. Drake sat across from her, the same crooked smile as he had earlier.
“The shots are going really well today, don’t you think Lena?”
“Yeah.”
“Are you ok after what happened this morning? That looked like it hurt.”
“My ass is black and blue and I have a knot the size of a baseball on the back of my head but other than that I’m ok. I hate shoes.”
“Shoes?”
“My shoes were wet and I slipped. But apparently I am ‘wonderful, incredible, creative, and independent.’ What he left out was clumsy.” She gave him a shy smile and closed her book.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“What’s it like?”
“What’s what like?”
“Your life, your career. You were like the biggest thing since Angelina by the time you were 21. What is that like?”
“I didn’t like it. That would be why until now I basically fell off the face of the Earth. I hated the people, the fans, the cameras in my face all the time, I like to be alone and by myself and that wasn’t going to happen with the way I was going. I needed to breath and I couldn’t do that. If you like having fans hide in your bathroom or laying in your bed with the lights off waiting for you to come home, then it was a wonderful life. I wasn’t to into that idea. Some creep killed my cat.”
“Damn, why did he kill your cat?”
“She killed my cat because she didn’t like how much attention they got from me. I always get the weirdoes. The crazy farm folk if you will.”
“I’ve never heard it put that way before but ok. So I’m guessing this all started happening after Tears of Pain?”
“No after the Emmy, the SAG, and the Oscar. I don’t get it. I really just don’t get it I won awards for playing myself Lena Gourley. I won awards and fame for living a painfully dramatic life. That to me just doesn’t make sense.”
“People love suffering. I don’t know what else to say but that.”
“I guess.”
“Are you ready to finish up for today?”
“Oh yeah I’m ready I need to ice my ass and head.”
Drake reached over and felt the lump on the back of Lena’s head. He shook and head and smiled again. “That’s a biggin. I can’t believe you fell like that. I didn’t even know that it had happened until about an hour afterwards. I feel bad that I wasn’t there. Let me make it up to you.”
“What are you going to rewind time?”
“No, but I can take you out for dinner and drinks this weekend.”
“Oh can you?”
“Yeah I can.”
“Alright, Saturday night then. What say you?”
“Aiy. That’s what I say.”
“Alright Captain Jack I will see you Saturday. Where around here is a good place to buy a car?”
“I’ll pick you up.”
“That works too.” She smiled and gathered her things.
He sat back in his chair and ran his fingers through his hair. He smiled, Lena Gourley had agreed to go out with him. Now all he had to do was plan the perfect night out. One she would not likely forget anytime soon.
