Ryan Dunn sat in his hotel room with a sorrowful expression on his face. It was his birthday, and no one had remembered. Not his family or any of the Crew showed any sign of remembering what day it was. Bam and the rest of the Crew had spent the majority of the morning sleeping off hangovers from the night before, then, decided to hit the pub again when they could move. They did ask Ryan to join them, but he declined the offer, preferring to sit alone in his room feeling sorry for himself.
Ryan had just turned on the TV and was flicking through the stations when there was a soft knock at his door. With his mood, Ryan didn’t feel like company, so he just ignored it. There was another knock, and then a familiar voice called his name through the door. Great, Bam’s here, wonder what he wants, Ry thought angrily. He really wasn’t in the mood for any of his best friend’s nonsense.
He slowly rose and answered the door. Standing in front of him was his friend, grinning like an idiot.
“You didn’t think I’d forget your birthday did you Random?” Bam said.
“It seemed like it.” Ry replied sullenly, walking back to the bed and flopping down on it.
“I take it you don’t want your present then?” Bam asked in that cocky voice that always made Ryan’s dick jump. He knew the feelings he had for his best friend were wrong and that Bam would never feel the same way, but at the same time, just thinking about the younger man felt so right.
“Well, do you want it?” Bam asked again, interrupting Ryan’s thoughts. He shrugged in response.
Bam walked over to the bed, and lay down next to his friend, who promptly turned his head away.
“C’mon Ry, don’t be like that. You know I wouldn’t forget your birthday.” Bam said, in an attempt to coax Ryan to look at him. “I never would.” He added, voice lower, huskier than normal, although, Ryan wasn’t sure if he was imagining the huskiness or not.
“Ry, please look at me.” Bam all but begged, “I’m sorry if it seemed like I’d forgotten, but I didn’t. I just didn’t know if I could go through with what I promised myself I’d do tonight.”
At this, Ry turned his head slightly towards his best friend. He was interested in Bam’s promise to himself, although, as much as he hoped it would be Bam’s need to express his more than friendly love for Ryan, he knew it was unlikely.
“Ryan, please look at me” Bam repeated, his voice cracking.
Hearing the tears in Bam’s voice, Ryan shifted so he was facing the other man. Bam’s normally clear blue eyes that danced with mischievous thoughts were now clouded with misery. Ryan had never seen Bam look so unhappy. But unhappiness wasn’t the only emotion Ryan could feel coming from Bam. He could detect a hint of fear. Or was it nervousness, he couldn’t tell.
“Ry…” Bam began. He really didn’t know how he was going to say this, but he’s made a promise to himself that he’d tell the older man on this date. All Bam hoped was that he wasn’t going to ruin his best friend’s birthday. “I don’t know how to tell you this but I know I have to. I know nothing is going to be right until I tell you. I know that I’m going to be miserable if I don’t tell you this, I hope it doesn’t ruin your birthday.”
“Bam, how could my birthday get any worse? You’re the only person who remembered.”
“Oh, what I have to tell you could very well ruin your birthday. It could ruin everything. Our friendship, all the skating stuff with Element, everything that’s happening with Jackass. What I have to say could ruin everything.”
“Bam, there isn’t much you could say that would ruin our friendship. Just stop overreacting and tell me what’s going on.” Ryan said.
“I’m not overreacting, but if you’re so sure that what I have to say isn’t going to wreck our friendship, fine, I’ll tell you. I’m gay Ryan.” Bam said, standing up and walking to the other side of the room.
Ryan tried to keep his expression as neutral as possible. He didn’t want Bam to see how happy this revelation actually made him. Unfortunately, Bam took his look of neutrality to be a look of disgust.
“See! I told you it would ruin everything! You think I’m sick! You think there’s something wrong with me! Everything’s going to be ruined now! Everything!”
“Bam, Bam, calm down. I don’t think you’re sick. Honestly, I don’t.” Ryan crossed the room and grabbed Bam to stop his pacing. At the contact, Bam immediately looked at his shoes. “Bam, look at me” Ryan said softly. Bam slowly raised his gaze to meet Ryan’s, his eyes brimming with tears threatening to overflow.
“Do you really mean that?” Bam hiccuped, “I really don’t make you sick?” A single tear slid down Bam’s left cheek, and Ryan used every bit of his will power not to wipe it away.
“No Bam, you don’t make me sick.” Ryan said, making sure he kept eye contact with Bam the entire time. He let go of Bam’s arms, went and sat back on the bed and motioned for Bam to join him.
As Bam sat on the bed, Ryan turned to face him. “I guess since you just trusted me with what I can only assume is your biggest secret, perhaps I should return the favour. Bam, the reason I’m so okay with you being gay, is because I’m bisexual.”
Bam stared blankly at Ryan for a second. Ryan never seemed anything other than straight. Sure, Bam had gay mannerisms, but Ryan, he was the straightest person Bam knew.
“Ry, I won’t pretend I’m not shocked, because I am. I don’t think anyone would have guessed it. I certainly wouldn’t have, but I’m sure everyone will still love you all the same.” Bam babbled, because this extra bit of information about Ryan made it easier for him to reveal his real present.
“Uh, Ry, I have one more confession to make” Bam stuttered. He’d suddenly become nervous. Bam knew what he was about to do. He knew he had to do it.
“Okay…” Ryan responded with a bit of apprehension in his voice. Ryan was nervous of what was to come. He knew what he wanted to be coming next, but he didn’t let himself get his hopes up about it.
“Ry, me telling you about my sexuality wasn’t exactly your birthday present” Bam told the older man, shifting closer as he spoke. As Ryan turned to ask what his actual present was, Bam pressed his lips to his friends for a split second before moving away and whispering, “Your birthday present is my love Ryan, it always will be.”
