"She's in a coma, we don't know if she's brain damaged until she wakes....but that could take months, years. I advise you to consider turning off her life support," A doctor informed the couple. The only information they had received in over four hours, was this. While heartbreaking, it was somewhat of a relief to at least know what condition she was in. Bam sighed, ran his hands through his hair, as Ville curled up into a ball and bit his knuckles.
"Ville...what do we do?" Bam whispered. In his heart, he knew, he wanted to turn of Evy's life support, he knew there was no hope.
"She'll wake up, I know it!" Ville whispered, determination lacing his words. Bam gulped, looked at the floor and played with his fingers. Taking a deep breath, he answered his husband honestly, knowing the reaction he'd receive.
"I don't think she will...you heard what the doctor said..." He muttered, not looking into Ville's shocked, widened eyes. He knew, without looking, that Ville was shaking his head, running his hands through his hair.
"No...no...Brandon, NO, she will wake up...she will, she has too....she's my baby, she will wake up I tell you, will will will..." Ville was speaking so fast, that only Bam understood what he was saying. Bam sighed, gripped Villes hand. He was shaking violently.
"Ville...baby...I don't want her to suffer...." Bam whispered, this time daring to looking into Ville's deep green orbs, that had become shallow and empty in the face of his daughters tragic accident.
"She c-can't feel a-anything.....s-she's a-asleep Bammie....asleep...Bammie p-please...I can't, j-just c-can't turn it o-off...please....g-give her a c-chance...." Ville pleaded. He couldn't believe that his little Evy was so close to death, in his heart, her name was a sign, a sign that she would wake up...one day... Bam nodded, knowing if he denied his husband the choice of turning off Evy's life support, he'd lose his love forever.
"Ok Willa, It'll be ok, I promise....we'll give her a few weeks, yeah?" Bam whispered, pulling Ville into a comforting embrace. Ville nodded, before bursting into fresh floods of tears.
A few weeks, turned into a few months, and, eventually a year. Ville visited almost everyday, until the band managed to get him to record the next album. It seemed to help him, give him strength, especially since every song on the album was about his Evy. While Ville was pouring his heart and soul into the album, also entitled Evy, and caring for his daughter, Bam was still convinced they had to turn off her life support, but every time he'd bring it up, Ville would snap at him. Their marriage was falling apart, they were growing apart...
"Ville, she's not gonna wake up, she's dead, she has been for a year...." Bam cried, on what would be Evy's 14th. Tears were pouring down his face, he didn't want to admit it, but he knew it was true. If Evy were ever to wake, she would have done it already.
"Brandon, this is our daughter you're talking about. I know she will wake up, we just have to give her time!" Ville protested, unable to believe that Bam had such little faith in their daughter's life.
"Ville, I know...I wish what I'm saying wasn't true, I really do, but..."
"But nothing Bam. Today is our Evy's birthday, and we are going to celebrate." Ville said firmly, although he was noticeably shaking. Bam sighed and nodded.
"Ok Baby, I'll meet you there...I know you have to go pick up her presents and shit...." Bam whispered, keeping his head down. What was breaking his heart even more that his daughters condition, was his husbands reaction, and behaviour towards it. Evy did not need presents, she needed a release from the life that was keeping her bound in agony, the life that she would never truelly live again.
Bam arrived at the hospital five minutes later, he had a plan in mind, and h knew he had to put it into action then and there. He had to turn off Evy's life support.
Siting by her, he grasped her hand in his, kissed it, and began to talk, knowing he had to tell her his plans before he went through with them, or hed be forever plagued with guilt.
"Sweetie, Baby girl, I'm sorry, I really am." He whispered, pausing so his emotions wouldn't take over. "I wish there was another way, I really do...you had so much more to live for...." Again Bam paused, this time to wipe his eyes, in that instant, he missed the tiny flicker in Evy's otherwise motionless eyes. "But Baby, your not gonna wake up, it's been a year darling and....and I can't cope....and....and....I d-don't want t-to...b-but I h-have t-to..." Bam sobbed, his eyes closed as his body shook violently with sorrow. Again, he missed a tiny movement from Evy, her nose wiggled like it used to every morning as she began to wake up. "I'm sorry Evy...." He whispered, finally able to control his tears. Without letting go of her hand, Bam reached out for the switch that would end her life. He turned the machines off, the noise of them stopped, but Evy's heart continued to beat, but he didn't notice, in the doorway, stood Ville.
"Bam...." He whispered, eyes wide. Had Bam really just killed their daughter? "No...no....turn it back on!" He cried, rushing over to where Bam was sitting. Bam stood up, held him back.
"No, Ville, No...she was dead....is dead, Ville we should have done this a year ago!" Bam cried out, he was angry, his pent up grief from the last year finally flowing free.
"She wasn't dead...you just killed her Bam...." Ville screamed, causing both the pair to miss a groan from Evy. "I want a divorce!" He whispered, ducking his head. "I don't think I can love you anymore..." And with that, he turned and left the room, Bam, eyes wide, cried out, went after him.
"No...Ville, NO!" He screamed, but, as he reached the door, he heard it. A soft groan, a groan of pain and misunderstanding. He turned and his eyes widened. Evy's eyes opened. "EVY!" He screamed, rushing back into the room. Evy eye's were darting around the room fearfully, but the tube in her throat prevented her from saying anything. "Its ok darling, I'll get a doctor..." And with that, he rushed into the corridor, "SOMEONE, ANYONE PLEASE! MY DAUGHTER JUST WOKE UP!" He screamed, not realizing that Ville had heard every word. Doctors rushed in, went straight to Evy. The next few minutes flew by in a flurry of doctors checking Evy, asking her questions, doing tests, all the while Bam held her hand, all the while Ville stood unnoticed by the door. He had been right all along, his Evy was awake....but his husband had tried to turn off her life support...what should he do...
"W-willa?" Evy asked, as soon as she and Bam were alone. Bam bit his lip, but tears still flowed from his eyes.
"Baby, Willa is..."
"Right here." Ville said, stepping into Bams sight line. Evy smiled, and Ville rushed to her side, scooped her up in his arms. "Oh my darling Baby girl, your safe and awake and alive..." He whispered as he felt Evy cling to him. He didn't notice Bam slip out of the room.
"What...day...is...it?" Evy asked, struggling between each word. Ville sniffed, looked into his daughters eyes.
"November 3rd, 2012. Darling, its been a whole year since the accident," He whispered.
Ville found Bam an hour later, in the waiting room, drinking coffee. Bam looked at his feet a Ville approached him, bit his lip to stop the tears, but was unsuccessful...
"Bammie...she woke up....I knew she would...." Ville whispered, hi voice full of emotion. Bam nodded.
"I'll talk to my lawyers in the morning..." He croaked out. Ville pulled him into his arms.
"I don't want to lose you Bammie...we were just het up....over Evy....over something that should never have happened..." Ville whispered, his breath tickling Bams ear just like it had a year ago. "I understand why you turned off her life support....and I'm sorry I snapped at you so much recently...I love you Bambi" There were tears in Villes eyes by this point, but Bam wiped them away.
"And I'm sorry for not believing you, for turning it off...Baby, I love you, lets just pretend none of his ever happened..." Ville nodded at Bam's words, and kissed his passionately.
