~*~i don't own anything in here except Charlie. every one else owns themselves, as far as i know. i also don't own the city of Rancho Cucamonga. and wouldn't want too if you paid me~*~
Sari sat by herself at the table, hurriedly trying to stuff her meal down her throat while she had the chance. She didn’t pay any attention to the people around her, looking only in the direction of the bathroom every few seconds.
“Excuse me miss, but you seem to have dropped this.” Said a smoothly accented voice behind her.
She turned, wide hazel eyes narrowing at the interruption in her meal. She barely saw the man handing her the napkin that had drifted out of her lap, “Thanks.” She turned back to her club sandwich, twitching the sleeves of her peasant blouse over her wrists.
“Did you just get released from jail?”
She turned and glared, “What?” she decided instantly she didn’t like this man. He’d already insulted her and he was tall and skinny with deep green eyes. And she had taken to hating men who were tall and skinny with green eyes.
“You eat like a prisoner.” The man said calmly.
Sari blushed and tucked her golden brown hair back behind her ear, “I have never been to jail-” except for that one time, and was only for a few hours and entirely not my fault, “But thanks for the lovely compliment.” She said sarcastically.
“Well then pardon me for asking, but why do you eat like your food is going to be ripped from you?”
She heard a noise and turned to the people approaching her table, “This is why.” She gestured.
“Dylan still hasn’t pooped.” The woman said concerned, carrying the most adorable six month old in the history of the world.
“Still?” Sari reached her arms out for the baby, who went to her burbling happily, “What are we going to do about you?” she asked, smoothing out her skirt and nuzzling the baby’s cheek.
Dylan said something in her incomprehensible baby language that sounded happy and tried to grab Sari’s plate.
“Dylan!” Sari moved it out of her reach, resigning herself to the fact that her meal was over.
“Here, give her to me. Come on Doll-face.”
“Go on to Auntie Charlie and let Mommy finish her food.” Sari gladly handed the kid off to her “Auntie Charlie.”
“Auntie Charlie” was Sari’s best friend. They’d known each other since high school and she was Dylan’s unofficial Aunt. More like Daddy, but people looked at them weird enough when they took the baby out with out them calling her “Dad.”
Charlie was a petite Psychobilly girl. She had long black hair with thick Bettie Page bangs. She wore a black cardigan with red cats on the shoulders and narrow cuffed jeans ending in black and red creepers. She also had half sleeves tattooed under the sleeves of her cardigan a piercing in her septum and two in her lip. She had others, but those were the ones easily seen.
She grabbed the baby and sat her on her lap, kissing her noisily, making her giggled and pull Charlie’s hair.
“Owwie!” she yelped, “Dylan, let go please?”
The baby released her hair and moved on to grab her necklace instead.
“I see why you eat like a felon now.” Came the voice from behind Sari again.
Sari looked at Charlie and rolled her eyes, making a face about the man behind her.
Charlie tried to cover up a giggle and looked behind Sari to see who was intruding on their meal and insulting her best friend, and almost dropped the baby.
Sari did not like the noise her friend made when she saw the annoying guy behind her. She raised her eyebrows and gave her a questioning look.
Setting the baby in the highchair, despite her protests, Charlie kicked the diaper bag under the table, “Umm, I couldn’t find, the, thing, that I was looking for.” She bent over the bag and pulled Sari down with her.
“What the-” Sari began, but she cut her off.
“Do you have any idea who that is behind you?” she whispered frantically.
Sari shook her head.
“That’s Ville Valo.” Charlie whispered fiercely.
Sari lifted her head straight into the table, “Fuck!” she rubbed her head and came out from under the table more slowly. Her eyes bugged out when she found Dylan playing with Ville.
He was making faces at her and she was letting out her sweet baby chortle and babbling at him. To the best of her knowledge, the only people Dylan had ever laughed for were herself, her grandparents and Auntie Charlie.
Charlie’s eyes were in danger of falling out of her head as she witnessed Ville Valo, of HIM, making her niece laugh. He made a particularly gruesome face and she burst out laughing as well.
Sari was further surprised when he asked, “What’s her name?” letting Dylan grab his finger. Most people thought she was a boy.
“Um, Dylan.”
“Dylan. What a lovely name.” he cooed at her, “You’re such a pretty girl.” He smiled at her, eliciting another toothless grin.
Sari instantly reversed her opinion of him. Anyone who liked her kid and was liked by her kid was held in high regard.
“How old is she?”
“Six months.”
“Really? She’s very active.” He gently pried her fingers from one of his bracelets.
“She’s a genius.” Charlie said proudly puffing up her chest as if she’d birthed Dylan herself. Not that she would have ever. Pregnancy had been traumatizing enough second hand.
Ville laughed.
“Um, no offence Mr. Valo,” Charlie began, “But what are you doing all by yourself at Applebee’s in Rancho?”
“Ville, please.” He said absently, “We were passing through on the highway, but the bus broke down. I left the guys at the hotel and decided to go for a drive. I got hungry and ended up here.” He shrugged.
“Oh.”
“Would you care to join us?” Sari asked, much to Charlie’s horror.
He grinned and slid next to her in the booth without breaking Dylan’s hold on his thumb, “I’d love to eat in the company of three beautiful ladies.”
Sari blushed. Charlie looked like she was going to pass out.
“So what are your names?”
“Sari. That’s Charlie.” She added when it appeared Charlie had lost all powers of speech.
“Pleased to meet you both. He shook hands awkwardly with his left hand as Dylan still held his other prisoner.
The waitress went to Ville’s table with his order and looked confused for a second when she found him in a different seat.
“Thank you.” He gifted her with one of his stellar grins and accepted his food.
“So how do you find our fair city?” Charlie asked, recovering from her momentary dumbness.
“It’s very,” he paused, searching for the right word, “Suburban.”
Charlie giggled.
Sari laughed, “Yeah, there’s nothing here but track homes and tweakers.”
He looked puzzled, “Tweakers?”
“Meth addicts.” She clarified, voice turning bitter.
“Oh.” He said simply and changed the subject, “We’ve passed through this way a few times, but never actually stopped. I always wanted to know what could possibly be on a street called ‘Etiwanda.’ Turns out not much. A Taco Bell and some houses.”
“I wouldn’t expect any band to ever stop here. There isn’t much in the whole town, least of all any venues. There’s a few in the neighboring towns, but none actually in this city, or Upland, or Fontana, or this far north in Ontario.” Now it was Charlie’s turn to sound bitter.
“That’s tragic.” He agreed.
“Completely. Charlie’s been bitching about that since junior year.” Sari rolled her eyes.
“With good reason! Do you know how hard it used to be to get a ride out to the Showcase?” she pouted.
“No. I used to be the ride.”
“Yeah, but you don’t like punk.”
“Shut up.” she said, throwing a piece of turkey at her friend.
“Oh come on!” she tossed it to the side, “Keep your meaty grossness off me!”
Ville watched the exchange between the obviously old friends with a smile as he picked at his pasta, “You don’t eat meat?” he asked, noting her salad.
“Nope.” She made a face.
“Weirdo.” Sari said, “It’s not natural.”
Charlie stuck her tongue out and started playing with the baby, telling her what a horrible person her mommy was.
“I’d have to agree. If we weren’t meant to eat animals,” he popped a piece of chicken in his mouth, “they wouldn’t be so tasty.”
Sari giggled, “That’s what I keep telling her.”
“So what is there to do for fun around here?” he asked, changing the subject yet again.
“I have no idea. I’m in bed by nine.” She shrugged, “There’s the mall, or the other mall. And down the street in Montclair, there’s another mall.”
Ville smiled, “So many malls. Don’t you do anything else?”
Sari adopted a valley girl accent, “Well this is the valley.”
He burst out laughing.
She laughed again, “Seriously, there’s not much to do here but get drunk or get high.”
“Where’s the best place to get drunk?”
She gestured to Dylan, who was yelling at Charlie for not giving her a sip of her soda, “How the hell would I know?”
“I guess you don’t go out a lot.” He sipped his drink.
“Not after nine.” She smiled at her baby.
Charlie’s cell phone rang and she excused herself from the table to answer it.
Ville took over entertaining Dylan and Sari took the opportunity to finish her meal. She looked up when Charlie returned, “Goin’ out tonight?”
She nodded, “Later. Most of the guys are working till ten.”
“So obviously there’s something to do here.” Ville looked at Sari accusingly.
Charlie blushed, “Um, not really. We’re just going to play…” she mumbled something.
“Play what?”
“D&D.” she said, quietly, looking at the ground.
“What’s that?” he looked puzzled.
“Dungeons and Dragons.” Sari clarified, “That geeky role playing game with all the dice?”
“Oh.” He looked at the Psycho as if she’d grown two heads.
Charlie stuck out her tongue, “What? So I play Dungeons and Dragons. At least I’m going out.”
“I’ve never made fun of you!” Sari held up her hands.
“Can I see your tattoo?” Ville interrupted before they could get into another old married couple argument.
Sari shrugged and moved aside her shirt to expose the tattoo on her shoulder blade.
“Nice. It’ a crow?”
She gasped, “Really? Everyone thinks it an eagle!”
“Eagles aren’t black.”
“That’s what I say!” she pointed to Charlie, “She’s the one you want to talk to about ink.”
Ville looked at her interestedly.
Charlie shook her head, blushing deeply.
“Come on, show me. Are they shit?” he asked.
She got offended, “No!” she rolled up the sleeves of her sweater to expose her tattoos.
The first one Ville noticed was the large pink razorblade on the inside of her forearm. He raised an eyebrow at her.
She blushed deeper, “Um, I like Razorblade Romance.”
“That’s nice. I like that it’s pink.” He said genuinely, “I wish I had a camera!”
“I do.” Sari said and waved Ville over to sit next to Charlie.
Ville sat next to Charlie, holding her arm against his chest tattoo out, and making a face as she snapped a picture. He returned to his side of the booth, “I love HIM tattoos.” He turned to Sari and wrote something on a napkin, “You’ll e-mail me the picture right?”
Charlie couldn’t wipe the grin off of her face.
Sari rolled her eyes at her friend, “Of course I will.” She grabbed the baby when she started to fuss, pulled out her phone and checked the time, “Oh, its bedtime isn’t it love bug?” she said gently and slid out of the booth when Ville got up, “It was nice meeting you.” She said.
He held her free hand, “The pleasure was all mine, believe me.” He shook Dylan’s hand as well, “It was nice meeting you as well little lovely.”
She gifted him with a grin and buried her face in her mother’s neck.
Charlie waved shyly, pleased when he grabbed her hand and shook it as well, “Nice meeting you Ville.”
“It’s always nice to have a pleasant meal with lovely ladies and a closet fan.” He laughed and turned back to Sari, “I’ll be expecting that picture.”
Sari thought it was just her imagination, but there seemed to be something more behind his words. She just nodded, “I promise I’ll send it tonight.” They paid their check and left.
~*~so what do you think? if you couldn't tell, there's a bit of self insertion, but i changed everyone's name. i promise it will get more interesting, and i have a few suprises. Sari herself is the beta on this one, so hopefully there will be less mistakes than i have had historically. review please?~*~md
