The cold light of the moon shone there where the sky was open, casting a gentle, yet eerie light upon the sinister scene.
“You have got to stop coming here…”
The ruins of a house. Once a happy place.
Now the winter was leaving, but there was still a tinge of it left in the cold night-air. Every shaky breath he drew made small clouds of condense, and the ground was still covered in dead leaves and the typical frost clung to it, as if refusing to let go.
“Adam.”
He moved closer to the house – or what used to be one. This place made him feel sick, and he hated the view before him. Still, he kept coming here, as often as he could. Now it had been a while, and that made him feel bad, worse than actually being there did.
“I wish you could listen.”
Adam didn’t know why, but he felt that by coming here, he could relive the trauma, and therefore not forget. It was twisted, completely backwards, and of course he wished none of it had ever happened in the first place, but now that it had, he wanted to remember. One day, he swore, he surely would either go insane or get over it. Right now, however, neither was even close to becoming his reality.
“Go back.”
Swallowing hard and taking another breath, he had gone through what had used to be the main-door. Then he had stopped dead in his tracks.
Adam was jerked back to reality by the ghostly sound of the swans’ harsh cries. He immediately knew what they were, but the sound still sounded haunting, at least out here.
He looked around again. He couldn’t believe he once had loved this place. It all seemed so far away now. Like a memory that he had made up.
He searched the ground inside the house, narrowing his eyes because of the extremely dim light. He found the candles, lighted a few and sat down on the ground.
Psychiatrists would most likely say that this was a very mentally unhealthy thing to do. Staying there, dwelling in the past. He just had a very strong, very certain feeling that he needed this.
“It’s been five years.”
They never knew what actually had happened there. The fire had apparently simply broken out from nowhere. Both the fire department and the police were unable to figure out the source of the fire.
“I hate to see you like this.”

Earlier, only a few days after they had first settled into the small house, Jade had been talking about some strange feeling he had about the place. To begin with he had only talked about it like it was something entirely normal, but as the days went by, he started to act more and more oddly. He had kept more to himself, and pulled away when Adam had tried to get closer, if only for a hug.
Adam had not known how to respond, or how to behave about it, because this was something that he was not able to explain. All he knew was that something was making Jade act out of place, like he was constantly on edge. Sometimes it even freaked him out. More than once had he woken up in the middle of the night to an empty bed, and with Jade gone.
The first time he found him staring out the window, and quite distracted. It had not been a problem getting his attention, but Jade would not answer Adams questions to why he was up or what was going on. He once mentioned seeing something that looked like a small child, a little girl, out in the forest, all alone, but he immediately excused it with his lack of sleep the past nights.
The night before they left – or rather `was supposed to leave´ - Adam had yet again woken to an empty bed. This time it was not because of Jade leaving, but of a rush of icy cold air. He had gotten up to see what caused it, at the same time looking for Jade. He had thought that the other had might not be able to sleep again - Jade periodically suffered from insomnia, it seemed - but as soon as he had gotten out of bed, he saw that the door to the house was open and Jade was definitely not around.
He had rushed out, not knowing quite where to go. They were in the middle of the forest, and he honestly was not that familiar with the place. Following the road was probably a good idea, but he had figured that if Jade was having a fall-back and was sleep-walking like he used to when they were younger, then he was probably not following the road, and certainly not here. Instead, Adam had gone down the small path down to the lake.

He had been determined they would go home as well. But then they had gone back to the small house and found it in flames. Jade had stopped dead in his tracks, before storming forward toward the house.
“Jade! Are you out of your mind?!” Adam could not believe his boyfriend was about to run into a burning house.
“She’s in there… I have to help her!” His eyes had been dazed, but Jade himself resolute, and he run like the wind and was gone with the blink of an eye.
Remembering all of this, Adam found himself going toward the far end of the ruins of the house, like he did back then, when the walls were still there, if only just.
He had not been able to see much through the smoke, and tried his best to cover his mouth and nostrils from the fumes. He felt his way through the living-room, spotting Jades shadow.
He had woken outside, in the forest, on moss-covered ground. He felt sort of dizzy, and yet strangely aware of every sound, every movement. Jade was right there beside him. He was weeping, not looking at him, but curled up against the trunk of a tree, hugging his knees.
He asked him what was going on, what that had been there inside the house.
But Jade had not answered. He just stared with glazed eyes into thin air, his expression blank. Adam went over to him, again putting a gentle hand on his lower arm. Jade made no sign of noticing his presence. He looked so lost. So instead of nagging, Adam sat down beside him, just letting him have silence, as the embers of their dream went out.

“You need to come to terms with what happened. Doing this will never help you. Go back, go back where you belong.”
Would Adam ever be able to let go? Was this how it would be?
What actually happened inside the house that night, Jade could not explain, even though he had been there, seen it. Now he hoped he would never have to see that place ever again. He did not want to have to go back there. He did not want to relive what happened that late summer-night.
“Her eyes were like iced fire.”
The words spilled from his lips without being directed at anyone, they had no purpose. They were both just a sentence, and a questioning one, because all of this was one big mystery. There was even a dilemma, because he wanted to know the truth, and was at the same time scared of it.
All he wanted was peace now. For everything to disappear. Even memories. His soul was weary.
“I don’t know what it’s like, but…if there’s a light, follow it.”
He did not expect an answer. There was no reason for that. Instead he turned and went down the path.
Peace…
It was such an easy choice, and he was determined to take it. The water below was calm and quiet, and seemed to draw him in. Whatever soothing depths hid beneath that glassy surface…
“I’m coming after you.”
