Kimberly’s Daughter: A Modern Day Romance
Part One: The Man with the Coffee Mug
Katie was a beautiful young blonde who’s hair was blowing around in the backseat of a car pulling up to her apartment complex. Kimberly was another beautiful blonde, who parallel parked her car perfectly and got out, opening the back door and unbuckling Katie from her car seat. “It’s time to go make supper, sweetie.”
“Okay, Mommy.”
She’s cute.” a young guy with a coffee mug said, walking by. He smiled at the toddler, who laughed, before disappearing into the apartment complex across from theirs.
Kimberly stood there for a moment, a slight frown on her face. Then she locked the car and started walking up the sidewalk to her building. She had learned to be wary of men at the age of eighteen, when her boyfriend had left after finding out Kimberly was pregnant. The two boyfriends she’d had since Katie was born hadn’t given her much hope for the other gender.
“TV boy.” Katie said as her mother opened the door to their building.
“Yes, baby, you can watch TV when we get upstairs.” Kimberly said, not even thinking that her daughter knew something about the man with the coffee mug that she didn’t.

“Why were you talking to Kimberly Cratin?” Julia said when she saw Matt next. She was the next door neighbor who was too damn nosy for her own good, but had her occasional moments of kindness.
“Kimberly Cratin?” Matt asked, unlocking his door. “Who’s Kimberly Cratin?”
“The slut with the kid.”
Matt stared at Julia. “And you know she’s a slut how?”
“She’s a single mother.”
“One of my best friends in college was a single mom.” Matt said, pushing his door open and shutting it behind him.

For the next three evenings, when Kimberly was getting Katie out of the car, the same man always appeared, always with a coffee mug, and always saying something about Katie before smiling and disappearing into his building.
On the fourth day, Kimberly grabbed his wrist. “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
The man turned to look at Kimberly. “Excuse me?”
“Why are you always here when you live in the other building? And why do you keep saying things about my daughter? You’re not going to get me in bed that way.”
He stared at her, anger and disgust apparent on his face, mouth slightly open. He moved close to Kimberly, a little too close for her comfort, but she didn’t pull back. “One of the women I work with lives here. I run lines with her.” he said in a low, dangerous voice. “I like kids and I thought I was being polite, but if you want to think that I’m some kind of asshole that’s trying to get in your pants by saying your daughter’s cute then you think that.”
She didn’t see him for the next two days.

The third day, she did. And she left Katie in her car seat for a moment, walking up the sidewalk to meet him. “I’m sorry I said that to you.” Kimberly said. “I really am. I just . . . I mean, I’m not used to guys saying nice things about Katie. I guess I was just . . . being a paranoid bitch. I’m really sorry, I just . . . don’t think sometimes.”
The man smiled slightly. “I guess it could seem that way. Most guys don’t say things to kids they just randomly pass. And I forgive you, on one condition.”
Kimberly raised an eyebrow. “And what could that be?”
“Have dinner with me.” he said. “I have a business dinner in a few days and I’m supposed to find a date for some reason I can’t figure out. You’d look cute in a cocktail dress.”
Kimberly tried to fight a smile. “I guess dinner couldn’t hurt. When is it so I can find a sitter for Katie?”
“Friday. I’ll pick you up at five thirty.”
She laughed. “Pick me up? We live across the street from each other.”
“It’s an expression.” he said, smiling. “I’m Matt, by the way.”
“Kimberly.”
“Mommy!” Katie yelled from the car. “Go inside now.”
Kimberly laughed. “I better go. I’ll see you tomorrow, I take it?”
“Yeah.” He smiled. “See you later, Kimberly.”
