How many cold mornings have we shared, my friend? Both rowing into the misty darkness. Muscle tensing, pushing, pulling. Cold water splashing softly, ripples fading away into hazy distances. Sunrise always seemed only a vague promise. I was prisoner of my own shadows and you were quiet. We nodded good morning and that was enough. The rest? Nothing but the still water around our boats. The saline scent of the wind.
I knew by heart your routine. Every little gesture you made when you were carefully preparing the nets. Checking to see if everything was alright. Then the waiting. Shivering in your boat as I was shivering in mine. So cold. Not even a smile passed between us. How many silences have we shared, my beloved friend?
Night’s heavy vapors banished by Sunrise. Peace.
If in our village our houses and wives and children smelled all like fish, the sea smelled clean, like salt and sun. On the water everything seemed simple and clear like a teardrop.
We always drifted away from each other, but never too far. I didn’t need to see you to feel you.
And how many stormy waters have we fought together, my beloved? Thundering skies and furious waves. The fear for your life was the only thing that kept me from the temptation of the abyss. I don’t even remember when it happened that I…
I…
In quiet afternoons, caught between the treacherous mirror of the water and the burning sun, I let my sinful nomad thoughts reach you. Desire. Adore.
While gutting fish and cleaning it in the salted water, I discovered Fantasy was cheap. You were safe. So close, yet perfectly unreachable.
So I built castles in the air for you. Imagined kissing your sunburned shoulders, running my fingers through your hair, licking your sweat, tasting your lips. Make love until you screamed.
Somewhere, at the end of the sea… But sea never comes to an end…
The seagulls circling our boats wanted our fish – they cried and didn’t care.
I never knew the exact color of your eyes. I never looked long enough, for fear of losing my soul.
I never told you anything. I was not a man of words. Only a fisherman.
I was torn from my comfortable senselessness by your drowning. I dreamed. Your face under water. Your eyes bluer than the sea.
I ran to the shore and screamed your name. Only the coarse voice of the sea called back and seagulls wailed. But I yelled like a madman all the words I never dared to think, nor tell you before. It was then that I knew that I loved you, Richard. Why didn’t you wait for me? It couldn’t be, it was unbearable… I needed you so bad…
Richard, my love and pain…
I did the only thing I knew. I drank. I drank for days. Wandered like a ghost on the shore, waiting for a sign. But God was nowhere to be found.
Dark tides swept my lost soul into the sea of your loss, Richard...
Until…
One moonlit night my cloudy eyes fed my despair with the image of you, my beloved drowned. Swimming towards the horizon line, careless and gracious like a marine god.
I threw myself in the water, trying to get to you, touch your flesh, put my finger into your wounds. I swam till my muscles caught fire and my lungs screamed.
But the more I tried, the further you got. Through the salt and tears my eyes recognized your shape, the graceful strokes of your arms in the water. My lips whispered your name. You turned and laughed at me. So pale and beautiful under the moonlight. You had seaweeds in your hair and a ring of shells tight around your neck.
And then you swam away. You didn’t seem to get tired… Tired, like old, defeated me. But I loved you more than I needed energy to get back to the shore.
I dipped my lips into the water and kissed the dirty sea… And the sea kissed me back with the kiss of your lips, Richard…
The next day…
Instead of the never-ending tenderness of death…
I woke up naked on the shore. With your taste in my mouth.
