Chapter 1:
Her golden skin glimmered in the California sun as she walked down the beach’s sidewalk. Her black and blonde hair was pulled up messily on the top of her head, and her sun glasses fell down her nose. She wasn’t tall, she was not in between, and she barely topped 5’1’’. Her frame was covered in tattoos; there practically was not a place on her body that didn’t have ink. She had her ears gauged, and a tiny stud that adorned her right nostril. She was wearing a pair of black shorts, her black low tops, and a black tunic top, and had her messenger bag slung carelessly over her shoulder.
She stopped in front of one of the many shops that lined the boardwalk in Huntington Beach. She stuck the key in the front door and opened the door and walked in to the darkened shop and locked the door behind her and threw on the lights. The clock that sat at her desk blinked 10 AM; it was only a half an hour before she had to open the doors to the public. Walking around, she turned random lights on, and flipped the stereo on and stuck a CD in the player. She organized the waiting area and when she looked at the clock it was 10:29. She walked to the door and unlocked it, and flipped on the open light.
The first person to walk into the shop was not a customer, but an employee.
“On time,” the guy said
“Like usual,” she chimed in, “Can you start scrubbing tubes, please? I need to finish this stencil.”
“Of course.”
“Thank you Adam.”
“You’re welcome Reagan.”
Reagan looked back down at the light table and was finishing a sketch of a pin-up girl. She made her final touches of the sketch when she heard a crash from the behind her. Adam came flying from the back of store, and she swung around in her chair. The two inspected the window to the front of the store. The window was broken, and glass was everywhere.
“Disrespectful little skate punks,” Reagan said grabbing the phone off her light table, “When I was their age and I skated, I never broke shit and caused trouble.”
Adam looked her and smiled slyly at her and she looked up at him grinning at her.
“Alright, I never caused trouble on purpose.”
Reagan dialed 911 and was told that the cops were on their way to her shop. She thanked the person on the other line. Adam was already cleaning up the glass when she put the phone back on the charger. The bell rung signaling that someone had came into the shop.
“Is the owner in?” An officer asked
“That would be me,” Reagan replied
“We already caught the kids who did this,” The officer continued, “Just a bunch of kids, the officers who caught the kids have already called their parents, and we will follow up with you on their punishment.”
“They don’t need to work it off, that’s fine. That window needed to get the decal redone on it.”
“Alright then miss.”
The officers walked out of the shop, and Adam finished sweeping all the glass from inside the store, while Reagan swept the glass from outside the shop window. She came back in and threw the glass in the trash can that was underneath her table. Reagan pulled her hair down and let it fall around her shoulders.
“Alright, I am going to finish up this stencil.”
Adam went back to the back of the shop and Reagan heard him turn the water which signaled that he was scrubbing tubes. Reagan continued to work around the shop, waiting for her 12:30 appointment. She unpacked some of the new supplies that had come in last night before she closed the shop. She put everything in its rightful place when she heard the bell ring. She looked up from what she was doing and it was one of her regular customers.
“Hey Jake!” she smiled
“Hey.”
“So do you want to take a look at the final sketch?”
“Of course.”
They walked to her desk once again and she pulled the sketch out of her drawing book and laid it on the light table. The two looked it over and talked about the sketch for a couple of minutes.
“So are you ready?” Reagan asked
“I was born ready,” Jake chuckled
“Alright, let me go make the stencil and get my set up going,” she smiled, “Can you give me about ten minutes?”
Jake just nodded his head, and took a seat on the couch and grabbed a magazine off the coffee table in front of him. She walked into the store room/copy room/cleaning room, and stuck the sketch into the copy machine. She waited and made a couple of copies to make sure the stencil was perfect. When she finished that up, she went to the front again and set up her machine, and her inks. She pulled on a pair of black latex gloves and waived Jake to the chair. He pulled his shirt over his head and Reagan applied the stencil to his rib cage.
“Lie down and stretch your arm over your head,” she said firing up her machine. Jake clenched his teeth when she applied some A&D, and then she pressed the moving needle to his skin and started going over the stencil lines. She worked in perfect concentration, conversing with Jake or humming the song that was playing over the shop speakers.
About an hour and a half went by; she had just finished the shading and was half way though color when she heard the door’s bell jingle. She stopped the machine and sat the gun down, and looked up. Standing there were two guys, Reagan stood up and took her gloves off.
“Hey guys what can I do for you?” She greeted
“Just looking to get some ink,” The shorter of the two said to her
“I got about 20 minutes left here, do you mind waiting?”
“No problem,” they both said taking seats in the waiting area.
Reagan sat back down and put a new pair of gloves on and fired up her machine again.
