A/N: Okay so this is something that just sorta came to me in a moment of supposed lack of muse. It's taken some from real life, so I hope there aren't any weird coincidences to scare you guys off. This comes from me and my plot bunnies. I have no idea where this is going, if it is even going anywhere. I just thought I would post it and see what you guys thought.
Summerset is based on my childhood/teenage hometown, and the people in it are as well. I've just tweaked some of the details and such for the MCR fandom (which works really well, surprisingly). I just had this idea come to me and had to write it down before it drove me crazy.
So saying all that, here's the story. If I get positive reviews, I might see if the story continues. Hope you guys enjoy! *big hugs*

Walking back into her old hometown was something Cara Morgan never thought she would do again. After her mother and younger brother had been killed by a burglar while she was finishing up her junior year of college, Cara had sworn off the small town. She hadn’t felt bad about leaving behind her stepfather and younger sister, as she had never been particularly close with her much younger sister, or the man whom she had despised for most of her teenage years. No, the little town of Summerset held too many bad memories for Cara, and she had walked away from it seemingly never to return.
And yet, five years after the tragic incident that left her with no real ties to the town, Cara found herself driving back down the two lane main street. The town looked exactly as she had remembered. The stretch of small tourist shops on each side of the street, bustling in the early afternoon rush. The large Baptist church nestled in the shady patch of grass across from the town pharmacy, still run by the same family that had started it decades ago. As she continued to drive through the small town, Cara passed the elementary school where she had went as a kid, smiling as she saw her old high school close behind it, although now it was the middle school, as the town and area around it had grown enough to merit building a new high school elsewhere.
Rather than turning down the road next to the schools where her old house was, she continued, passing the town library and veterinary office. Within a few minutes, she had almost reached the interstate and the end of the sleepy little town of Summerset. Part of Cara told her to keep driving and leave the little town behind. After all, she could make it back to the house that she shared with a few friends within a few hours, if she turned onto the interstate and kept going. Instead she pulled into the parking lot for one of the grocery stores, where she had worked over the summers between years at school. One of her mother’s old friends had somehow managed to get Cara’s sister to get back in touch with her, mentioning something about some things that she felt needed to be cleared up.
Cara walked into the grocery store and headed up to the front desk, knowing that would be the place to find Margaret. As far as she could remember, Margaret had worked at the grocery store. She had worked there when Cara’s older stepbrother worked there, and had worked there when Cara had worked there as well. Cara had even been best friends with Margaret’s daughter in elementary school, before Cara had been moved ahead a year. And sure enough, Margaret was at the front of the store, rushing around joking with the regular customers, her face a little more lined and her hair a little lighter than Cara remembered. But that is to be expected with the time she had spent avoiding Summerset.
The moment Margaret noticed Cara, her face broke out into a larger grin and she rushed over pulling the girl into a tight hug. Cara thought that Margaret was also a bit shorter than she remembered, but could have been mistaken, as Margaret had always been a shorter woman. Margaret held up one finger before rushing off for a moment, before reappearing with a smile on her face.
“Cara Morgan, you have no idea how good it is to see you again. Come on, I told Jason I’m taking a smoke break, so we can go outside for a few minutes. Let the devil run his own store.”
Cara laughed at the old joke about the store manager being the devil incarnate. It certainly brought back some memories. But with memories, her mind always tended to go to one in particular that she would rather ignore. So instead of dwelling on the past, Cara followed Margaret out of the store and over to one of the picnic tables set up outside of the deli area of the store. She could remember when she would spend every lunch break sitting at these very tables eating a rushed lunch while her nose was buried in a book for the long summer months. She sat down with a smile, shaking off an offer of something to drink from one of the vending machines, as she wasn’t that thirsty. In fact, all she wanted to do was to just find out what Margaret had to tell her and get out of Summerset and back to her life that she had worked so hard at getting started for herself.
“How are you doing, Cara? And answer honestly. All that I could get out of Janie was that you were living with a guy you met at school and some friends.”
Cara nodded with a smile thinking about the guys that she lived with. Sure it was pretty chaotic living with three guys, but then again with her job she was out of town a pretty good deal of the time, and they were good roommates.
“Yeah, Mikey offered to let me live with him and his brother that first summer. Besides, I’m out of town a lot with my job, so I can’t really complain. I have a nice roof over my head, plenty of company, and I actually feel like I have a real home again. Yeah, it’s pretty wild living with three guys, but they have their moments.”
Margaret raised an eyebrow a bit suspiciously before taking a sip of her own drink. “Three guys? By my count you just said this Mikey guy and his brother. Or are there two mysterious brothers?”
“Frankie might as well be related. But no, Gee and Mikey are the only siblings. Frank is just one of their friends who knew them for years before I moved in. They’re a crazy bunch, but I love ‘em. After all, they saved me from being thrown out on my own or going back to live with Clyde and Janie.”
Cara sighed, trying not to focus too much on the memories of the chaos she had found herself in after she had been told her mother and brother had been killed, leaving only two people in her immediate family, neither of whom she was particularly fond of, alive for her to go back to. Margaret felt bad to see such sadness in the younger girl’s eyes, and she reached out covering Cara’s hands in her own.
It had been a tragedy when Grace and young Jacob Morgan had been found murdered in their home, just weeks before Jacob’s high school graduation. Cara’s stepfather and younger sister had been visiting her stepsister and running some errands, when a burglar broke into their house and stole everything worth any value after killing Cara’s mother and brother. The police had searched for months for anything, but eventually gave the case up as the evidence died away with time.
The murders were so gruesome that despite not having the money to do so, Cara’s stepfather carefully burned out the inside of the kitchen and living room where the bodies had been found, and completely rebuilt. Why he didn’t move to another house, no one knew. He simply refused to move, saying that it was what Grace would have wanted. Although Cara doubted that fact, but she would never voice that. She had also never set foot on the property afterwards.
“Then I’m glad you have such nice friends, Cara. It’s good to hear that you’re taking care of yourself and being taken care of. But you’re probably wondering why I asked you to come talk to me, aside from so I could just see how you were doing.”
Cara nodded, eager to find out what was the point of the meeting so she could get as far from Summerset as she could. She hated the memories, and even more, she hated the feeling of helplessness that always came from the sleepy little town.
“Well, I wanted to let you know that with my daughter Audrey married with plenty of help for herself and Paul well enough on his way in the world, I’m naming you in my will. Paul and Audrey are still there, but I want to leave you some things.”
“But Margaret, you’re not nearly old enough to be writing a will. Is something wrong? You aren’t planning on offing yourself are you? Because you should seriously rethink that. It’s not a pleasant experience, trust me.”
Margaret merely shook her head, holding up a hand to silence Cara. Although Cara’s mention of suicide startled her a bit. But then again, Cara had been through quite a lot in her years. “Cara, child, calm down for a moment. In answer to your questions, I’m not going to ‘off myself’ as you put it. But I made out a will because I’m dying. I didn’t want to tell many people, because it’s a rare cancer and it won’t be noticeable until I’m gone. I’ve lived long enough, so I’m not worrying with fighting it. I just wanted you to know that as I’ve always thought of you as a bit of an extra daughter, you’re included in the will.”
“No, I won’t let you. You can’t die too. I knew I promised to stay away from Summerset for a reason. Everyone I care for dies. It’s a death town. I won’t be sucked in. That’s why I got out as fast as I could, Margaret. It wasn’t because I went to the best school I could, or any of that nonsense. I was running. Ever since I was free to make a few choices of my own, I’ve fought to get away from this go nowhere town. So you can’t suck me back in by saying you’re dying. I won’t have it. I’m sorry, but I have to leave now. I have a meeting with a business partner and can’t be late.”
Without a second thought, Cara jumped up and walked off towards her car, determined to get as far from this damned town and this time, stay away for good. She wiped angrily at the tears that had started to roll down her cheeks as she started her small car and quickly drove out of the parking lot and away from the store, cursing at herself for coming back to Summerset in the first place.
Without realizing it, Cara had somehow been speeding and muttered another curse as she heard a siren from behind her. She sighed and pulled over, determined to try and use the distress card as a way to keep from getting a ticket that would force her to come back to this town again. Although as the police officer walked up to her window, she recognized him as a friend she had went to school with and smiled, hoping to get it easy.
“Ray, long time no see. How are you?”
“Cara? My god, it’s been forever. What are you doing back in Summerset? I thought I heard you moved off completely after the accident with your family. ... I really am sorry about that, you know.”
“Yeah, I live in West Cran now with some friends. I just came by today because Margaret wanted to talk to me about something. I probably just got a little upset and wasn’t paying too much attention to anything.”
“Listen, I’m not even on duty right now. My shift finished an hour ago, I was just heading to grab some lunch. How about I just not even bother with your speeding? But if you’re not doing anything, I would love to chat with you and catch up some. Paco’s is having a special deal today, if you’re hungry.”
Cara smiled and nodded at the mention of catching up over lunch at the local Mexican restaurant. Sure, she might run into family there, as her stepsister had married one of the owners of the restaurant. But the thought of catching up with one of her high school friends was more appealing at the moment. Even enough that she wouldn’t be completely against spending more time in Summerset.
“Okay, I’ll follow you over. My very own police escort for the moment.”
Ray laughed and nodded before jogging back to his car and heading to the restaurant. Cara smiled as she followed him along. The two had been good friends in high school, had even tried dating a few times, but contented themselves to friends. Although she didn’t think he would be the type to become a police officer, especially in Summerset. When they were in high school, Ray had seemed almost as eager to get out of the town as Cara had been. But then again, time changed things, she was proof of that. Back in high school she had dreamed of becoming a teacher at her familiar school and helping her favorite teacher. And now that was the last thing in her mind.
As she pulled up to the curb outside the restaurant in town, Cara shook her head wondering what she was doing back here. She had gotten what she came for, so why was she hanging around a town she despised? But the mop of unruly hair of her friend reminded her. She couldn’t pass up a chance to catch up with one of her close friends from a time when she was a lot less complicated.
Cara smiled as the waiter brought their drinks out to them and took their order before heading back to the kitchen. She took a sip of the margarita and sighed, letting the taste calm her for a minute. She laughed with a shake of her head as she noticed Ray staring at her. At her questioning gaze, he laughed and shook his head.
“I just didn’t know you drank. I still remember when you swore off all drugs, calling them ‘vile tools of the devil’, I think.”
Cara sighed laughing. Yes, that had been a long time ago. “Yeah, but I grew up quickly, Ray. Now I don’t bother with the devil and god. I drink, but normally only at home with the boys. And I don’t come back to Summerset.” She took another drink before pointing to Ray. “But what about you? I remember when you were almost as hot to get out of Summerset as me, and wouldn’t have become a cop if your life depended on it.”
“Touché. But then again, we all change. After I heard about the thing with your family, I knew that I wanted to do anything to help. So I decided to become a cop and try to help find the guy who did that to you and your family.”
“Wow, Ray. That’s really sweet. You really didn’t have to do that though, you know that?” Cara felt her eyes start to water at her friend’s kindness, even after they hadn’t spoken in years.
Ray merely shrugged before taking a sip of his tea. “I know. But it was just something I had to do. And I’ve grown into it now. I guess I just needed to get out of Summerset to realize how much I love it.”
“You too, huh? I can’t believe it. This town has sucked you in as well. It’s this sick and twisted cycle. Once you’re a part of Summerset, it never lets you leave. Thankfully I escaped. But what a price to pay. I’m not going to hold it against you, Ray. I just thought you would be one of the ones to escape.”
“Cara, it’s not that bad of a place. I can understand that you have some bad memories here that push you away, but it’s not all bad.”
“Ray, I’m not arguing with you. Let’s drop the point and just have a good lunch. When I leave, we can swap numbers, but I’m going back to West Cran, and very happily might I add. I have a home there, and people waiting for me to get back.”
By the sigh, Cara could tell that Ray wasn’t entirely ready to drop the topic, but thankfully he conceded and the conversation continued, just skipping over the debate about the merits and/or downfalls of Summerset. And when they finished lunch, as Cara said, they exchanged phone numbers and promised to keep in touch. Cara almost ran to her car and left behind the small town of Summerset, hoping it would be the last time she saw it ever again. But fate doesn’t work the way we would like sometimes.
