They sat together, shoulder brushing shoulder. The tears fell, warm and sweet from Ville’s eyes.
“One more time?” he whispered.
“One more time,” Bam nodded. The two boys stood up. They wrapped their arms around one another and began to sway to music only they could hear. Perhaps it was in the beating of their hearts, or maybe it was in the way their eyes locked.
Let me be your hero.
Would you dance,
If I asked you to dance?
“You know we don’t have to do this,” Bam said softly as he felt Ville’s fingertips dig into his back. The older man shook his head.
“I can’t do this anymore.”
“I know,” Bam swallowed. “I know, babe.”
Would you run,
And never look back?
They stopped their swaying and simply stood together, locked in an embrace that seemed both too tight and not enough at the same time. Bam’s eyes closed for a moment, and if you didn’t know better, you would swear that he was in pain.
Ville was struck again by how beautiful the boy was. Even with this expression of hurting, he was walking art. Before he knew what was happening, tears began to fall down his cheeks again.
“Don’t!” Bam yelped. “Don’t start crying, please.” He begged.
“Why shouldn’t I? Why shouldn’t I cry?”
“Because then I’ll start crying.” Ville pulled the younger man into a crushing hug. Their hearts seemed to be pounding against one another. All he knew at that moment was that he never, ever wanted to let go.
Would you cry,
If you saw me crying?
Would you save my soul,
Tonight?
The two of them finally broke apart, both feeling a pain that was physical. They couldn’t bear to be completely parted, and so their hands still clutched at each other. Ville took the fingers of one hand away from Bam’s.
He tried to steady himself as he reached for the face he loved so well. Every time he touched the man it was like the first time. Bam turned his face up, took the caress like it was a tender kiss.
Would you tremble,
If I touched your lips?
Would you laugh?
Oh please tell me this.
“My poor darling,” Bam murmured. He kissed Ville softly on the lips. For some reason, the touch made him want to cry harder.
“I love you,”
“I love you, too.” Bam smiled. He took both of the singer’s hands again. “Let’s go. I don’t want to put this off any longer.”
“No,” Ville agreed.
Now would you die,
For the one you love?
Hold me in your arms tonight.
They made their way up the creaking stairs, silently as they could. They had no desire to awaken the other sleeping people in this house. They bypassed Bam’s room. Missy was lying there, asleep.
Oh, God, Miss. This was so unfair to her. But, Ville told himself, life had been unfair to all of them. There wasn’t much that could be said or done about it. They continued on to Ville’s room.
His suit for tomorrow was pressed and cleaned, hanging on the back of his closet door. Bam refused to let himself look at it. It would only remind him of his own tux in his bedroom.
A tux he would not wear.
They gingerly lay down on the bed, stretched out next to one another. Bam reached out for Ville, and their lips met.
I can be your hero baby,
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever,
You can take my breath away.
“Are you ready?” Bam asked, when they broke apart for air. Ville nodded, just once.
“I’m ready.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” and so the skater reached into Ville’s nightstand and withdrew a bottle of pills. He shook out a few. Automatically, the singer opened his mouth. The tablets were placed on his tongue, a holy communion of things that were never meant to be in the first place.
The plastic bottle was placed into his hand then. He repeated the promise with Bam. They lay together for a few minute, holding hands.
“Are you mine, Bam?” he asked quietly.
“Forever and always.”
“Good.” It didn’t matter if it was true or not. In these moments, words were unimportant. It was actions that spoke in loud screams.
“It’s time for the next dose.”
“Yes,” Ville hesitated. He put a few of the smooth capsules in his mouth and then bent to kiss Bam. The man understood, and immediately he opened his mouth. Their tongues mingled as the pills were transferred to the younger mouth.
Would you swear,
That you’ll always be mine?
Would you lie?
Would you run and hide?
They repeated this process several times. Everything had taken a beautiful cotton candy sort of quality. They knew now that the end was nearing. Suddenly, Ville’s mind filled with all the things he’d never said.
“Bammie?”
“I’m right here, Willa.” The skater seemed to appear from the gray mist that had taken over the vision in those jade green eyes. He curled close to Ville.
“I’ll always be here.”
“I’m scared.”
“I am too.” Bam confessed. They said nothing, only held each other tighter.
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don’t care, you’re here,
Tonight.
The time was passing slowly, like molasses running down his skin. He could feel his heart slowing in his chest. It felt pleasant, almost like sinking into a warm bath or slipping between warm sheets.
“Ville?”
“Yes, sweetheart?” he said. It sounded like he was speaking from underwater.
“I love you.”
“I love you too. More than you know.” He kissed the cool forehead. He felt the head rest on his c hest.
“I love you so much.”
“Good,” Bam said softly. Ville managed to look outside. The midnight blue sky was just beginning to lighten to a dark gray.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
The sky was slowly, slowly staining pink and lavender. It was beautiful. Not the most beautiful thing that Ville had ever seen though.
That was resting in his arms. He let his eyes drift shut. Bam stirred against him, and he tightened his grip on the other man. He could not let this go. Even if Bam’s heart stopped first, even if he ran ahead to wait for Ville in whatever came after this, he could not let go.
Bam was his.
Bam would always be his.
No matter what rings were on his fingers.
Oh,
I just wanna hold you.
I just wanna hold you.
Oh yeah.
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
Well, I don’t care.
You’re here tonight.
They held each out right up to the last breath, the last heartbeat. They laid there together in Ville’s bed, locked in an eternal embrace. It was Missy who found them the next morning, lying close and snug like that.
She stood in the doorway of the room, looking at the two of them.
Fallen angels who had managed to grab onto one another on the way down.
It was beautifully unfair.
I can be your hero baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
Oh yeah.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
She slowly walked across the room to stand next to them. He would have been her husband today; she mused as she reached out and touched his cold cheek. She saw Ville then, his face resting against Bam’s.
“I suppose I was wrong.” She said to them. “He always did belong to you. I was wrong to try and take him from you. I shouldn’t take what doesn’t belong to me. I know that now.”
And she bent and kissed them both on their icy cheeks. She had to go and find April, had to go and prepare for the tears and mourning and whispers and misery that was soon to occur.
But as Missy stood in the doorway, she stopped and turned.
“I am glad he had someone he loved with him.”
I can be your hero.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
You can take my breath away.
I can be your hero.
