Ville rolled over. He smiled as soon as he saw Bam was lying next to him. He was still deeply asleep. His lips were parted, and Ville could hear the breath that passed over them.
He closed his eyes again, smiling to himself. The sky outside was still dark, and there was simply no reason to be awake. But of course, when he opened his eyes again, his bed was empty. He swallowed. This was not unusual when it came to Bam.
That boy was simply a busy person, he told himself. He had places to go, things to do, people to see. Ville just wished that Bam would take him with him.
But he always comes home to you, a little voice said in his head. Ville smiled as he put his feet on the floor, shuffled towards the bathroom that had been given to him by Bam, so he wouldn’t have to share when he came to the Castle.
Of course, lying on his dresser was one single, perfect red rose. His heart melted as he picked it up and smelled it.
Bam never left without making sure there was some reminder of him in the room.
Turn it inside out so I can see,
The part of you that’s drifting over me.
And when I wake you’re, you’re never there.
But when I sleep,
You’re every where.
You’re every where.
Ville stepped into the shower. Bam’s razor and comb were resting on his bathroom counter. He found himself contemplating these items as he rubbed shampoo into his hair. How had it come to this?
When he first met the skater, he thought that he’d found a wonderful friend. And when he woke up in the boy’s arms, he knew then that friendship wasn’t enough. It never would be.
But he could never let himself believe that it would come so far. He couldn’t have let himself think that he’d be spending every night in those tanned arms that cradled him so tightly.
“It’s almost insane.” Ville said out loud to the showerhead as he rinsed his hair. He stepped out of the shower, tied a towel around his waist. He picked up Bam’s comb and ran it through his own hair.
“You’re not who you seem to be.” He said softly.
Bam gave off the appearance of a real tough guy, a real jerk, in it only for himself. But one only had to notice the way that he looked at Ville, notice the way he put his hand on the man’s skin and they’d see the truth.
Just tell me how I got this far.
Just tell me why you’re here,
And who you are.
‘Cause every time I look you’re never there.
And every time I sleep you’re always there.
When he was done grooming himself, he walked to the living room. He smiled as he saw his picture up on the wall. He was everywhere in this house, or at least memories of him were.
He sat down on the couch to read a magazine.
Ville didn’t see himself here. All he could see was Bam. He could only see the way Bam sat on the couch, hogging most of it for himself. The way he leaned over the pool table, lining up a shot. The way he took the stairs two at a time, always in a hurry.
Everything seemed to be breathing Bam.
‘Cause you’re everywhere to me.
And when I close my eyes,
It’s you I see.
You’re everything I know that makes me believe.
I’m not alone.
I’m not alone.
The day wore on, and still, Bam had not returned. Dunn had filled him in, saying he was off doing something with Dico. Ville sighed inwardly. He wanted Bam near him. This feeling of longing was almost choking him.
He played along with the others for the day, going for rides on the four wheeler, playing pool, sharing cigarettes out by the pool in the warm summer sun. He stared out into the water, watching the way the sun sparkled on it with a frown.
It would be unfair to say that he’d never loved anyone before. But it would be untrue that he’d loved anyone the same way that he loved Bam. He knew what love was, but this feeling that held his heart tightly and took his breath away was completely new. Ville exhaled a lungful of smoke thoughtfully.
“When did you say he’d be home?” He asked Dunn.
“Uh, pretty soon.” The bearded man checked his watch. Ville nodded and sat back in the shade. Best not to think about it.
I recognize the way you make me feel.
It’s hard to think that you might not be real.
I sense it now,
The water’s getting deep.
I try to wash the pain away from me,
Away from me.
They dragged themselves back to the Castle, hoping to chase the heat away with the air conditioner. Ville flopped on the couch and folded his arms behind his head, staring up at the ceiling.
He maintained that position for a few minutes before he realized that this was the way Bam lay when they were hanging out on the bed, watching television. He blushed and wondered if anyone else would notice.
It took his a few more minutes to realize that he’d put Bam’s cologne on this morning, and had walked around all day smelling like him. He hadn’t even known it at the time.
‘Cause you’re everywhere to me.
And when I close my eyes,
It’s you I see.
You’re everything I know that makes me believe,
I’m not alone.
I’m not alone.
“Willa, hey. Willa. Wake up.” Someone was shaking his shoulder. He grunted and turned away, burrowing deeper into the couch. The voice chucked and stroked back his hair.
Was it…? No, it couldn’t be. He couldn’t finally be home after waiting all day. Ville tentatively reached out and touched the hand that was touching his face. Fingers laced and palms met.
“You’re home,” his voice was thick with sleep.
“Where else would I go?” he opened his eyes and found himself staring into deep blue pools. Pools he could lose himself in. Pools that floated in his dreams, always just out of his reach.
“You were gone all day.” He sounded like a child. Without thinking, he reached his arms outward, reaching for the one thing that he instinctively knew could make him feel better.
“Ville,” Bam murmured in his ear as he hugged the older man to him tightly.
And when I touch your hand,
It’s then I understand,
The beauty that’s within,
It’s not that we begin.
You always light my way,
No matter where I go.
I hope there never comes a day,
No matter where I go,
I always feel you so.
They fell into bed that night, hungry for one another. Fingers worshipped skin as mouths whispered sweet words of love that never seemed to wear out, no matter how many times they were repeated.
The two men curled close to one another; even as they slept they did not release one another. It was as though they felt more secure in being alive when they knew the other was near.
Ville smiled as he nuzzled Bam’s chest. Even when he closed his eyes, he still saw Bam. Bam was engraved behind his eyelids. The Finnish man knew he was completely in love, but he wouldn’t have changed it for the world.
He inhaled deeply, taking in the scent of Bam. Even though he wore the man’s cologne, he couldn’t quite capture the smell of him. All he knew was that it was addicting, intoxicating.
“Love you,” Bam murmured.
“Love you, too.” He said softly.
‘Cause you’re everywhere to me,
And when I close my eyes,
It’s you I see.
You’re everything I know that makes me believe,
I’m not alone.
‘Cause you’re everywhere to me,
And when I catch my breath,
It’s you I breathe.
You’re everything I know that makes me believe,
I’m not alone.
Bam lifted his head again, his eyes locking with Ville. He reached out and let his fingers trace the lip that sang for him time and time again. Ville smiled then, loving the way his touch felt.
“I really do love you, you know that, right?”
“Of course I know,” Ville answered.
And he did.
There in that moment, he was sure that Bam loved him. He knew that the way he felt was true love. He knew that he had Bam with him, and that Bam had him. It was the most perfect feeling he ever had.
You’re in everyone I see,
So tell me.
Do you see me?
