Ville’s face was bright red as he glared out of the window. He couldn’t bring himself to turn his head and look at his lover, a fact that Bam Margera was painfully aware of.
“Babe? Come on, babe.” He tried to coax the older man into a conversation. Ville didn’t budge. The only thing that betrayed the fact that he was a man and not a statue was the stiff way he lifted his burning cigarette to his mouth.
There was silence in the car for the next fifteen minutes. Bam grit his teeth. He didn’t want to be the first one to break. April could have told you that he was stubborn to a fault. He always had to be right.
But when it came to Ville, that was a rule he was willing to break, if it meant that he wasn’t mad anymore.
“Will you at least tell me what I did wrong?” Bam cried as they got into the house. Ah, those seemed to be the magic words. The stony expression faded from the Finnish man’s face and became one of anger.
“You mean you really don’t know? I really have to tell you?”
“Well, since I’m not an X-Man and I can’t read your mind, and even if I was a superhero, I wouldn’t want my power to be mind reading; yeah!” Bam shouted. He hated it when Ville was like this.
It was almost as bad as living with a woman. He hated playing all these little ‘Guess What I’m Thinking’ games. There was no way he could win! It was just sheer misery!
“The way you behaved in the restaurant was deplorable, Brandon.” Ville said in a low tone.
Oh, grand, just grand. There was a three point vocabulary word and his birth name in there. He knew he was really in for it now.
“What do mean? I just acted how I always act!” Bam tried to regain some ground here. If Ville hadn’t yelled at him before, he couldn’t yell now. Could he?
“Right, flicking olives at me, eating your salad with your fingers, drinking wine right from the bottle, eating your steak with your hands… this is all unacceptable behavior, Bam!”
“Well, goddamn, you never said anything before.”
“Love blinds you, I guess.” He grumbled. Bam’s heart stopped in his chest.
“Are you saying you don’t love me anymore?”
“What? No! No, no! I’m not saying that at all.” Ville rushed across the room and hugged the younger man.
“I’m just saying that if this is going to work, we need to work on a few things.”
‘We’ being Bam. ‘Working on a few things’ being him doing whatever Ville told him to. But somehow, Bam was okay with that. As long as it meant that the singer wasn’t going to leave him.
**
The first lesson in manners began that evening. Ville sat Bam in a chair and spread his napkin in his lap.
“Why is it there?”
“So you don’t drop food in your lap. If you need to wipe your mouth, you lift it up and dab.”
“Okay,” Bam rolled his eyes.
And then Ville served him soup. He had to tell Bam three times not to slurp. When the skater decided it would be easier just to lift up the bowl and drink from it, the singer almost had a heart attack.
“What’s wrong? I’m drinking quietly!” Bam protested when Ville set his bowl back down on the table.
“You can’t drink out of the bowl. That’s what spoons are for.”
“But I end up slurping on spoon.”
“I know,” Ville sounded incredibly tired with this whole business already. Finally, he served Bam a plate of spaghetti.
Giving him long, sticky noodles was generally a bad idea. Bam began by picking a forkful up, tilting his head back, and dropping it in. Ville instantly stopped him, showing him how to twirl the noodles around the fork.
“But that’s boring!” Bam protested.
“That’s polite.”
Bam sighed. He looked miserably down at his plate and began to listlessly twirl to get his bite. Ville smiled as he ate. And then looked up, and saw the sheer despair etched on Bam’s face.
Don’t give in, he told himself. He’s being a drama queen, like usual. Don’t give in. Let him act like this.
It was only when the younger man looked up and gave him the bravest smile ever that Ville broke. He put down his fork and walked around the table, wrapping Bam in a warm embrace.
“Oh, sweetheart, I love you for doing this for me. You can stop now. I’ll just take you as you are.” Ville kissed the side of his head. Bam grinned.
“Can we order in pizza, then?”
