Distant Lover Chapter One
The full moon shone brightly on the sea below, bestowing it with flecks of white gold. The waves lapped higher and higher upon the soggy beach, carrying with it the glistening remains of jellyfish and sea stars. A lone woman stared out to sea, not really seeing, merely listening to the sound of the waves and feeling the earth’s energy course through her body. She raised her eyes to the full moon and smiled; how she loved nights like this!
“Closer.” The wind whispered in her hair. She strode closer to the waves, leaving little more than a foot between them.
“How you enchant me so.” She whispered to the waves. A surge of energy pulsed in her veins. Oh, to commune with Gaia! The feeling was glorious, exhilarating. She raised her face to the moon, eyes closed to the dazzling glow. She breathed in the sea air, filling her lungs with cold. She felt so at peace, so perfectly still.
“Miss?” came a voice at her side. Her eyes flew open; the connection with Gaia lost. Panic seized her body, making her knees tremble. She was not supposed to be discovered. The only rule set by her dear Ama, broken into sad pieces. “Miss? Are you alright?” the man asked, placing a light hand on her elbow. She turned her eyes to his and found herself locked in his enchanting hazel gaze. “Are you alright?” he repeated, grabbing her shoulder to steady her. She nodded, too afraid to speak. “Why don’t you sit and rest for a while?” he offered. Without waiting for an answer, he took off his jacket and placed it on the sand behind her. He slid a hand onto her waist and grabbed her hand, easing her slowly onto his jacket. “What’s your name?” the man queried, tilting his head to one side. The moonlight set his eyes aflame and made them sparkle like diamonds.
The man’s eyes drew the woman’s attention and her nerves calmed. He had charmed her with his kindness. Perhaps she could trust him. Perhaps there was nothing to fear.
“My name is Taliyah.” The man studied her for a moment, putting her name with her face. She was fairly tall, with midnight hair to her waist and violet eyes. Her skin was sun-kissed, a natural light brown. She had a skinny waist and a flat stomach, but solid looking arms. She was swathed in a sundress, dark green with black splotches. Her jewelry looked exotic, a claddaugh from Ireland, a metal necklace with black and purple beads and a domed bloom that jingled when she moved. A red, black and white anklet adorned her left ankle.
“I’m Gerard. And why aren’t you wearing shoes?” he asked. She laughed, pleasant to his ears. He smiled at the sound.
“I can’t feel Gaia with them, silly!” she smiled at him, observing him for any sign of danger. She saw only his raven hair and his perfect smile. He was clad in several garments she couldn’t identify; it looked nothing like what her people wore. His arms looked powerful, as a man’s should.
“Well never mind then. I’ve never seen you around here before. Do you live in New York or something?” Gerard asked, noticing a shiver that Taliyah was trying to hide. He inched a little closer to her.
“What’s New York? I’ve never heard of such a place. But no, I don’t live near here much of the time.” Taliyah peered at him warily, as if he were playing a trick on her.
“What do you mean? Do you move a lot?”
“Yes, very often. We usually only stay somewhere for a month, two if we’re lucky.” Taliyah smiled then.
“Wow. Do you move all over the country or just New Jersey?”
“My people move all across the world. We just came from the Maldives.”
“Your people?” Gerard was perplexed.
“I’m a…actually I probably shouldn’t tell you.” She looked up at Gerard’s pleading eyes. “Oh fine! I’m a Gypsy.” Taliyah waited for the rejection, for him to shun her. It never happened. He just sat next to her, looking at her face. “You…are going to chase me off?” she asked skeptically.
“No, I would never do that. I take it people don’t like gypsies?”
“We’ve been kicked out of country after country. We’re treated like we’re lower than dirt. To some people, we are. We just want to live in harmony with the people around us.”
“I’m sorry.” Gerard was sincere; Taliyah could see it in his eyes. “What’s it like?”
“Like being paraded in front of a bunch of drunks who want to own you.” Taliyah blurted.
“Huh? What are you talking about?”
“I’m sorry. My father is trying to find me a husband. I don’t love any of the men he’s chosen for me. And none of them want to love me, they just want another trophy to polish and put on their wall.”
“That sounds awful. I’d never be able to do that.” Gerard hugged her to him.
“I hate it, but I have to be married by my twentieth birthday. And it has to be of my parents’ choosing. I have no say in it. It’s the way of my people.” Taliyah rested her head on his shoulder and looked up at the moon. “I must return to my people, Gerard. I’m sorry.” She got up with his help and he put his arms around her waist, her arms landed on his shoulders. Each looked into the other’s eyes, not wanting to leave.
“Do you have to go?” Gerard asked.
“Yes, Gerard, I must. I am expected home soon. My people would search for me and I would hate for you to be punished on my account.”
“Why would I be punished?”
“Because you are not a Gypsy.” Taliyah’s eyes welled with tears. She craved him like she craved her connection with Gaia. It was an instant attraction, the moment she had seen him she had wanted him. “I am not allowed to be with men who aren’t gypsies. I would have my hair cut off to shame my family, and you…you would be put to death.”
“Please, Taliyah, come and live with me. You don’t have to go back if you don’t want to.” Gerard pleaded, his hands sliding up her arms.
“I must! They are my family and loyalty to family comes first. I cannot and will not abandon them. I’m sorry, Gerard, but we can never be together.”
“I…understand. Will I ever see you again?” Gerard tightened his grip on Taliyah’s arms.
“Maybe someday. I will return to this place and find you. Perhaps I shall bring my children to meet you.” Taliyah smiled weakly as Gerard looked away.
“Taliyah?” Gerard’s hand gently cupped her chin, pulling up her face to meet his lips with hers. The kiss was sweet and full of longing, but lingered for only an instant. Taliyah broke away, her tears beginning to fall.
“I must go.” She said faintly. “Ich liebe dich immer.” With that she turned and walked away down the beach, into the darkness and out of Gerard’s life. He watched her go silently, and as she became one with the shadows, he whispered to her ghost.
“Ich liebe dich immer.” With a faint smile on his face, he picked up his jacket and went home.
AN: For those of you who don't speak German, 'Ich liebe dich immer' means 'I love you forever'. There will be more tidbits of worldly languages in which case I will explain what they mean, ok? Oh BTW, when Taliyah mentions her promise to her 'Ama', she means her mother. It originates from Nepali.
