“Kell? Do you think that’s a good idea?” Jason asked as his sister sat in the backyard, staring at the trees.
“I think so,” she smiled. “ I mean, that was the point of being here…” she motioned around her new home in Nashville. “To work on my music. I figure a random amateur night to test a couple of new songs would be cool. No publicity, no label people. Just me, Aben, and the audience.”
“Ok,” Jason sighed, realizing how so unlike her it was, but glad that she was ready to share it with the world. “I’ll set it up.”
“Jay, don’t worry. I figure Aben and I can just show up at the Wild Horse on Tuesday and go from there.”
“Ok,” he laughed. “Kelly Clarkson taking part on an amateur night…doesn’t sound fair.”
======
Carrie and Stephanie sat on the couch watching little Evan playing with Ace. Carrie always relished the time she got to spend with her sister and little nephew.
“So, you look exhausted…” Stephanie began. “…want to get some rest?”
“No,” Carrie suppressed a yawn. “Believe it or not, after being in the studio all day, I’m wired. We should do something.”
Her sister smiled knowingly. “Well, we could go out on the town?” She knew Carrie was too much of a private person to go out on the town. To her doing something was more along the lines of a slumber party, or a movie night.
“Hey, there’s an idea,” Carrie perked up. “Do you think Josh can watch Evan?”
“Absolutely.” Stephanie got up to call her husband.
======
A few hours later, Carrie, Stephanie, Tara, and Lindsay were ready for an impromptu girls night out.
“So, Carrie,” Lindsay asked, “Where do you want to go?”
“Umm…y’all can choose, just not Tootsie’s!” They all laughed as they remembered their last adventure down Broadway. It figured that going down one of the best known bars in Nashville was bound to attract attention, something that Carrie seemed to shy away from when with friends.
“Oh,” Carrie piped up. “And no Coyote Ugly either! It’s full of pervy frat boys ogling the girls and hitting on anything that moves. Besides, I’m not feeling the dancing on the bar tonight.”
“How about we just head in that direction and see where we end up?” Tara offered. “It’s a Tuesday, I don’t really think there’ll be that many people out and about.”
=====
Jason paced waiting for Kelly. “Are you ready yet?”
“Almost!” Kelly yelled from her room.
Jason laughed as she came to the living room. “Ok, I don’t get why it takes you that long to get ready. I mean, you’re just wearing jeans and an Aerosmith tee.”
Kelly smirked. “Boys. It’s not about that. I was just making sure this was the shirt I wanted to wear tonight. Besides, I needed Ashley to finish my makeup. Which is pointless. I’m not going as Kelly Clarkson tonight. I just want to be Kelly the girl from Texas.”
Jason rolled his eyes. “OK, sis. I get it. No Grammy winner tonight. Just Burleson Kelly. So, where’s Aben?”
“He’s meeting us there,” Kelly said as she grabbed the keys. “Let’s go.”
“Are you nervous?” Jason asked as she shifted under his gaze.
“A little. I’m always a tad apprehensive whenever people first hear a new song,” she admitted honestly.
“Then, why are you doing this?”
“Because,” she sighed, “I want to know if I can still do this. I mean, I know I can, I love my music. I guess I just need pure feedback from normal people. Not those who are looking at my songs with dollar signs behind them. You know?”
Jason nodded, “I got it. Well, let’s go show you that’s right…”
=====
Kelly, Jason, and Aben met with the manager at the Wild Horse Saloon to sign up for amateur night. Matt couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw her.
“Kelly Clarkson?” he smiled nervously. “What the heck are y’all doing here?”
Kelly smiled. “Oh, not a whole lot. I was wondering if there was any way I could take part in your amateur night. “
Matt broke out in a laugh. “Last I checked Grammy winners aren’t really amateurs…”
Kelly chuckled. “Well, true. I really have been working on some new material and wanted to play it for an audience to see the reaction. A new approach… besides, don’t you think it’d be fun?”
“Definitely!” He flirted. “Pretty girl with the pretty voice. By all means, you got a spot. But I’ll put y’all at the end of the show as a surprise to the audience, I don’t think it’s fair for you to compete.”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Kelly joked. “The only talent show I ever won was Idol…”
“What?” Matt shook his head. “You aren’t serious?”
Jason laughed. “She is. The closest she ever came was second at the Johnson County fair.”
“Huh, never knew that.”
=======
After having to wait for Carrie to figure out what to wear, and finally settling on a vibrant pink spaghetti strap dress, they were finally heading down 2nd Avenue.
“So, where to?” Tara, who was driving, asked.
“Wild Horse?” volunteered Lindsay as she looked out the window. “I think it’s amateur night or something. We can laugh at the bad singers.”
Carrie giggled. “Ha, says the girl who makes dogs howl!”
“Hey, now, not everyone can sing like you…” Lindsay whined. “Besides, the deal is, I write, and you sing.”
“I was just kidding. Yeah, it could be fun. But if it sucks, y’all are takin’ me somewhere fun…”
“Deal,” Tara smirked, and whispered, “Tootsie’s…will see you soon.”
The girls parked and made their way to the Wild Horse, laughing along the way as some people made a double take whenever they recognized Carrie. She’d smile and pretend she wasn’t her.
Upon entering, they realized that it may be hard for them to go unnoticed. Carrie convinced them all to go up to the second floor and hide there for a while. She figured that once the audience was there, they could make their way down and hide on a side table.
They enjoyed the first few acts, but were growing a little bored. “Girls, why don’t we head to Fuel?” Tara smiled. She was ready to score a hottie for the evening.
“Ha,” Carrie scoffed. “Not really my kind of place. Why don’t we wait for a bit? Let’s go downstairs and find a quiet corner. Who knows what’s coming next…and I think it’s almost over, anyway.”
Carrie directed her girls to right side, next to the horse statue. “Here we go,” she smiled. “Nice, close, and quiet.”
====
The MC, TJ, came on to the mic. “Hey, thanks to y’all for comin’ tonight. We’ll be announcing the winner in a sec, but before that, I was just told we’ve got a pretty nice surprise for y’all. All the way from Texas, here’s…Kell and Aben!”
Aben came out and took his spot next to the amp. Kelly walked past him and took a seat on the stool at the center of the stage. She smiled at the crowd, cleared her throat, and began
tentatively: “Frozen…forgetful again…The part where I lose my head…
And sing where I’m supposed to speak
But instead…I see him listen again
I’m stuck with these cards, I guess…
Leaping from this cliff in my thoughts
I fly like a stone’s in my heart
Drowning in doubt… for what reason?
I see...so patiently…drenched in all of this shit…”
She scanned the crowd and noticed that everyone stared curiously. She could feel them enjoying her song, and she gained more confidence as she continued.
“I can’t escape…I’m ready now… ohhhh, oooooh, ohhh
I’m ready now… ohhhh, oooooh, ohhh
I’m ready now….come get me
Fearless...with cape in hand
Conquer what I need to mend
Little girls get so broken
But I sit so patiently…drenched in all of this shit
I can’t see no sky
I’m ready now…ohhhh, oooooh, ohhh
I’m ready now… ohhhh, oooooh, ohhh
I’m ready now….come get me.”
=====
Carrie stared in awe. “That voice sounds so familiar,” she thought. “Oh, y’all…that’s Kelly!”
Her friends looked at her confused. “What?” Tara asked not taking her eyes away from the stage.
“Clarkson,” Carrie clarified. “That’s so Kelly Clarkson!” She was getting excited at the idea of seeing her perform.
“But why,” Lindsay began, “would she be here during amateur night?”
“I don’t know. But that’s definitely her, I could recognize that voice anywhere,” Carrie beamed, proud of herself.
“Hey, you know, “ Lindsay teased. “It almost sounds like you’ve got a crush on her.”
“Ha,” Carrie laughed. “You’re funny. But no. Seriously, when I first started, all everyone would talk about was how great she was, how I should pay attention to everything she’s done, blah, blah, blah.. I mean, at first, I was getting sick and tired of hearing all about her, but when I met her at Clive’s party , she was just as nice as everyone said. And if it weren’t for her, I might not have ended up on that show...”
“Alrighty…” Lindsay smirked. “Still sounds like a crush!”
“Hey, now. Come on, haven’t you been reading, I go through boys like it’s nothing. Anthony, Tony, Chase…I couldn’t even tell you who the next victim they have me paired with is…”
=====
As Kelly finished that last note, the audience erupted into a huge applause, which completely caught her by surprise. “Thanks, y’all. And for the record, I’m gonna cheat and do a second song. It’s called One Day, and I hope you enjoy it.”
The lights dimmed, a lone spotlight on Kelly as she began and scanned the crowd.
“You don’t know…how you shine
I guess no one told you, so let me be the first
To show how I, love you eyes…when you smile
Can’t resist you…even when I try…
One day….you’ll see
One day….you’ll believe me”
She noticed the blonde, standing at the edge of the stage. “Wow, she looks so much like Carrie, that’s weird, “ she thought as she continued.
“I don’t know why they left
I will never understand foolish hearts….and careless hands
I’m not like the rest of them…
I’ll be here forever…til my last breath
One day…you’ll see
One day…you’ll believe me
One day…you’ll know
One day….I won’t have to show you
Carrie went closer to the stage, she wanted to be sure that really was Kelly. They locked eyes as Kelly continued her song:
“All I know...is that I’ve found…what I’ve been looking for
Held you once, and I took a chance…and asked for a little more
You don’t know, how you light every room or how you shine
I guess no one ever told you…so if you don’t mind
One day…you’ll see
One day…you’ll believe me
One day…you’ll know
One day….I won’t have to show you…”
Aben finished strumming and was drown out by the crowd’s applause and cheers. Kelly smiled in shock, hopped off the stool, waved at the audience and left the stage as tears were beginning to form.
“That was awesome!” Jason greeted her with a hug backstage. “Wait, why are you crying?” He asked protectively.
“You know I’m a crier.” She wiped the tears away. “I guess it just felt good to see people liking my songs. It’s like I’m standing there naked, waiting for approval.”
“Aw, well, they approve...besides,” he teased, “you think you’d be used to this by now.”
“Well, I am, but it’s still a nice validation. You know, as long as I know that someone out there likes my music, I feel like I can put up with all the crap, just to share it with them.”
Unbeknownst to Kelly, there was a certain blonde making her way backstage.
“Kelly?” Carrie asked tentatively.
Kelly turned around, “Yes?” she asked surprised. She stopped dead in her tracks when she noticed the gorgeous blonde smiling brightly at her. “I knew it was you,” Carrie stepped forward. “My friends didn’t believe me…that was just….amazing…”
“Thanks,” Kelly glanced down at her hands nervously.
“No, I mean it,” Carrie clarified misunderstanding her actions. “I really, really loved it!”
Kelly chuckled at the enthusiasm. It wasn’t really how she imagined Carrie to be. She’d had this image of the goody two shoes, little miss perfect, shy and quiet.
“So, what brings you here? I mean, you sell venues left and right. Why are you doing amateur night at a Nashville club?”
“Well, honestly, after everything I went through last year, I just wanted the chance to test out my new songs. I wanted the pure feedback from normal people. Does that make sense?” the Texan smiled shyly.
“It sure does,” Carrie reassured her. “To be honest with you, I wish I could to that myself.”
“What do you mean,” Kelly asked with a slight head tilt.
“Well, that was cute,” Carrie smiled to herself before answering Kelly. “I mean, I wish I could be out there, in front of the audience, exposing myself and writing my own songs like you do. I guess, not all of us are capable of that…”
“Aww, come on,” Kelly reached for Carrie’s hand. “That’s not true. You have an amazing voice. Trust that. I really think that you could be an amazing writer if you had some time for it. I know you’ve written songs. ”
Carrie was completely caught off guard and flattered. “Well, thanks,” she blushed, still feeling Kelly’s hand on hers. “That means a lot coming from you…I still don’t get how you can do that.”
“It’s really not that hard. I mean, it’s scary as hell, but once I get out there and connect with the audience. Even if it’s that one person on the third row, it makes it all worthwhile. That’s why I’m doing this tonight. But anyway, what are you doing here?”
Carrie smiled. “Oh, we really just came out on a whim. I was done recording and my sister and some friends wanted to come out for a bit.”
“Well, I’m glad you did,” Kelly smiled brightly. “It’s really great to see you!”
“You too,” Carrie finally let go of Kelly’s hand. “You know, maybe we could hang out some day?”
Kelly laughed. “Why, Carrie Underwood, are you asking me out?”
Carrie laughed and shook her head. “Ha, no. Besides, I don’t do the asking out. I believe that falls to you,” Carrie teased.
“Oh, does it now?” Kelly gave back. “Duly noted. But you know , that’s how rumors spread.”
Carrie laughed. “This is true. “
Kelly smiled, and pretended to be serious. “But really, would you go out with me?”
Carrie looked at her slightly confused. “Is Kelly flirting with me?”
“Well, not like that. You know… girls’ night out or something casual. I finally caved and bought a house here, but most of my best friends are back in Burleson. I mean, not that I don’t have friends here,” she babbled nervously. “It’d just be cool to hang out with people I don’t work with, you know?”
The blonde was completely taken by the babbling, thinking Kelly seemed a tad shy and no unlike what she pictured she would be one on one. “Hey, I know. It’d be really awesome to hang out. But you should know that I’m really private person. I don’t really do the club scene that much…”
Kelly perked up. “Oh, I love you!” She teased. “I so don’t either. I mean, find me a little hole-in-the-wall where no one knows who I am or doesn’t care, and I’m so there. Shoot, I have more fun sitting at home, playing pool with my brother and Ashley.”
“Who’s Ashley?”
“Oh, she’s my best friend, stylist, confidant, and everything else. But contrary to rumors, not that…” Kelly laughed. Carrie looked at her curiously. “Oh, it’s ok. Trust me, I’ve heard it all and it doesn’t really bother me.”
Jason cleared his throat. “Um, Kel, do you want to get going?”
Both Carrie and Kelly woke up from their conversation. “Not yet, Jay.” She turned back to Carrie. “Carrie, this is my brother Jason. Jason, this is Carrie…”
“Underwood,” he smiled. “My pleasure,” he extended his hand.
“Nice meeting you. Well, Kelly, it was great seeing you, but I think I should be heading back. My friends are out there waiting for me.”
“Oh,” Kelly couldn’t hide his disappointment. “Well, ok, can I have your number?”
Carrie laughed. “So you can ask me out, huh? I’m on to you..and yes.”
Kelly blushed as she handed Carrie her phone so she could add it to her contacts. Carrie entered her number, and called it from Kelly’s phone. “That way, I can have your number…who knows? Maybe I’ll ask YOU out.”
Kelly laughed. “Well, alright. Can’t wait!”
