“It’s not Tuesday what the fuck is he doing here?” Zack ranted as loud as he could without the sound carrying to the main floor. Brian shook his head, “I dunno. It looks like a party, he came in with like ten other guys.” He pulled Zack the rest of the way backstage and gave him a light peck on the cheek, “I already told Bruce and Rocky, they’re watching ‘em.”
Zack sighed and nodded. Thursdays were supposed to be easy days. The room was rarely half filled and even then the guys that were there were the usual drunks that kept to the rules so the wouldn’t be kicked out. Tuesday. That’s when this pig was supposed to show up. Angrily he tossed his bag onto his makeup station and started pulling things out. He had thirty minutes to calm himself before he would have to go out and deal with the man they had all dubbed ‘Pig’ and his rowdy friends. His skin crawled at the thought of him or any of his cohorts putting their grubby paws on him in any way. But he knew they would and the sooner they did the sooner Bruce or Rocky would kick them to the curb and he could go back to his regulars.
He tried to keep his features neutral but he could feel his nose wrinkle in mild disgust; Brian stalked past him muttering about needing a shower and in his mind Zack groaned. Either they were being very sly with their touches or Bruce and Rocky had to deal with something and weren’t in the room. He closed his eyes as the music started and then finally schooling his face he walked out onto the stage.
Pig saw him first, he always did. He was creepy like that. His greasy brown hair was tied back with a rubber band freeing his reptilian eyes from obstruction. Zack had learned the first night Pig had come in to not look him directly in the eye, while his coy looks worked with other guys Pig had actually climbed on the stage before Dan, the security that night, could grab him and kick him out. He felt his nose wrinkling again and he slowly turned a circle to give him time to get his mask back in place. When he came back around Pig had a small smile on his lips, possessive almost; like he was telling everyone that looked at him, see that, it’s mine. Mine, mine, mine. his pug nose, that had contributed to his nickname, was cherry red from years of hard drinking, his round cheeks were rosy as a flush crept across his face. Zack slowly stripped his shirt off to hide his disgust. He knew he turned guys on, that’s why he had a job, but the thought of this man jacking himself off in the bathroom while thinking about his set made him a little ill.
He got his shirt off and teasingly started to unbutton his pants, all of Pig’s friends went insane hooting and hollering shouting that they’d give him a five hundred dollar bonus if he went home with them. He turned his grimace into a coy smile and pulled his zipper down. He swept his eyes over the crowd almost automatically searching for the guy that had, had the most to drink or that looked like he was feeling free with his money. If he wanted to pay his half of the rent and get dinner those were the ones he needed to please. His eyes landed briefly on three men in the back; there was a tall one with messily cut raven hair that fell alongside his face, another one Zack had to do a near double take on was almost as short as his friend was tall at first Zack thought he was underage but he was holding a shot glass which meant he was at least twenty-one. The Club was a stickler about checking and verifying age, they caught enough crap from social groups that didn’t want a male strip club in their city. Female strip clubs were fine but not male ones. Zack laughed at their hypocrisy when it wasn’t threatening his job.
The Club, unimaginative as the name was, had the best male strippers in the city. Mostly because they were one of three male strip clubs, the other two were closer to the slum area where The Club’s patrons would not be caught dead visiting. The building was fairly large, the main room could easily fit sixty people and the bar area had room for another twenty. The dark wood of the tables and chairs dimly reflected the low white, red, and blue lights.
The white lights were for the stage, they were the brightest lights in the house but still only a soft glow that left enough shadows on the dancer’s bodies to incite whatever dirty thoughts the patrons wanted. The red lights illuminated the main floor, mostly the first semi circle of chairs and tables so security could keep an eye on the more rowdy customers. At the back and up two steps was the bar bathed in a soft bluish light where most of the patrons spent their time between dancer’s sets.
On the left side of the bar was a door with an Employees Only plaque that every perverted patron wished to go through. The back hallway held the manager’s and owner’s office and a small side room with a metal framed bed and lumpy mattress fully stocked with condoms and lube. Contrary to the plethora of rumors surrounding the room only rarely did anyone ever use it for sex. Mostly the dancers used it as a quiet place to lay down during a long shift and take a quick nap.
The row in front of the stage was the only sets of tables in a semi circle around the stage, the rest of the tables were set up in staggered lines that gave everyone no matter how tall or small a clear view of the stage. The interesting group of three was on the fringe of the group but still obviously part of it. The small man was sitting contently on his taller friend’s lap; he wasn’t really watching the stage but the others in their group with a smile that was half amused and half disgusted. His dark brown mohawk added to the illusion of his youth and Zack found it disconcerting so he turned his attention to the third man, quite possibly the most interesting one.
He was definitely not paying attention. He was scribbling in a notebook apparently oblivious to the loud music, the vulgar shouts of his other friends, and even Zack himself. He felt a bit slighted that the man wouldn’t pay attention to him. That was really the only reason most guys came to The Club; they wanted to see him. Yet here this dark haired man sat writing in his little notebook not paying a lick of attention to him.
Fleetingly he thought about jumping off the stage and giving the man a personal show but seeing the hungry looks in the others’ eyes he decided he didn’t want to risk that particular confrontation. His point was emphasized when he finally stepped out of his pants and three different pairs of hands reached out to grab his boxers. Playfully he swatted them away when he really wanted to stomp on them. There were cries for him to take all his clothes off and he ignored them. Maybe one day but for the moment he was too shy to reveal himself to a room full of strangers. His black boxers were a size to small for him and very uncomfortable but it gave everyone something to look at and usually got him extra tips in the hopes they might convince him to take them off.
Brian had no qualms about being naked on stage; before the health code guys had looked the place over he had even gotten himself off, but apparently that was a good way to spread STDs so the owners told him to stop so they wouldn’t get shut down.
He glanced at the Oblivious Man again but now he was simply staring at the notepad, like he didn’t know how to go on with his thought. Zack wanted to throw something at him. But with his head finally raised a little more Zack could see the fine boned features of his face. High cheek bones and from what he could see, full red lips; his brow was furrowed in thought and Zack had a feeling that once his face was free from stress he would be very attractive. He would have to remember him and tell the guys; some of them were single and looking.
While he was distracted with his Oblivious Man someone reached out and squeezed his ass. He yelped and jumped away from the stage and saw Pig looking at him happily. Bile rose in his throat and with a flick of his wrist he asked the DJ to skip part of the song and get him closer to being done. Now he knew why Brian needed a shower.
Brian was waiting for him when he all but ran off the stage, “I saw you jump. What’d he do?” he glared at the front room and Zack pulled him toward his dressing area, “Grabbed my ass. I wasn’t paying attention.” He kicked himself again for his lapse and then shuddered and vowed that after he had rubbed his ass raw he would never get distracted like that again. He slipped inside his dressing area and thankfully pulled the too tight boxers off and put on the correct size while he and Brian continued to talk.
“I swear it’ll be the happiest day of my life when he gets banned.” Brian said. Zack nodded though he knew his friend couldn’t see, “No shit. Him and his friends.” His thoughts wandered to Oblivious Man and he astonished himself by thinking he’d spoken too soon. Brian echoed his thoughts with a smile in his voice, “Well, I don’t know about all of his friends.”
Zack buttoned his pants and stepped out and rolled his eyes when Brian flashed him a toothy smile. Brian was one of the ‘single and looking’ guys Zack had wanted to tell about Oblivious Man. He started to tell Brian but brought himself up short, he wasn’t so sure he wanted his friend to know. He shook the thought from his mind but still changed his question, “Have you gotten dinner yet?” he pulled on a shirt and a hat while Brian grabbed his own disguise and shook his head, “I was waiting for you.”
They walked out from backstage and avoided the rowdy group and headed over to the bar to get something to eat before their next set. They couldn’t eat much or else their stomachs would stick out on their next set so ‘dinner’ was more like a snack of cheese fries and cokes. Patrick set their orders in front of them and then went to refill drinks for the regulars. Zack glanced at the rowdy group every now and then while he at a fry and tried to recall where exactly Oblivious Man would be sitting. He found the tall guy and his apparent boyfriend but the seat next to them was empty. He wrinkled his brow as he thought and came to the conclusion that he had indeed found the man’s seat, he just wasn’t there.
“Looking for someone?” Brian asked with fake innocence. He knew Zack had sworn to never date a Club patron again after his last disaster but he still continued to try and hook his friend up. Zack rolled his eyes, “No.”
“Uh-huh. You seem awfully concerned about that back row.” He snatched one of Zack’s fries and gave him a sly look; he had noticed Oblivious Man too.
“I’m not looking,” he grabbed one of Brian’s fries, “for anyone. Not here, never here, and for the moment not now.” His last relationship had ended badly for both parties, more so for Zack since he had wound up with a fractured jaw and a hundred different bruises; his ex was sitting in jail for domestic abuse. Brian knew that, Brian was the one that had dragged his semi-conscious body away from his ex and called nine-one-one. Brian finally sighed in defeat reached out and lightly ran his hand over the still fading bruise along his temple, “I know. I just want you to be happy.”
The flicker of anger that had sparked to life when Brian had pushed him disappeared with his touch; he nuzzled his hand and smiled, “I am. Just don’t leave okay?” under the playful words was a sincere plea. One of his fears was that Brian would find a guy and leave him.
“Never.” He said kissing his cheek. He looked at his watch and sighed, “I’ve gotta get ready again.” He took one last sip of his coke and then headed toward the back to get ready. Zack sat and almost subconsciously glanced over to see if Oblivious Man was back. His seat was still empty. Scolding himself for giving into a petty infatuation he resolutely turned back to the rest of his fries.
Someone slid into the seat next to him and he glanced up and his heart nearly stopped, Oblivious Man was next to him ordering a shot of whiskey. He tried to still his heart and tell himself to ignore him but his eyes found their way over to him again and again. His arms were colored with a dozen different tattoos and Zack could see the gentle swell of muscles over his shoulders and chest with the tight shirt he was wearing. Staying true to his name Oblivious Man didn’t pay any attention to him. He swallowed his shot and then turned to look at the group he had come in with when the noise picked up again.
He muttered something and shook his head before he finally took notice of Zack, “Hey, are the fries any good?” his voice was soft and husky and Zack felt a delightful chill run down his back while he answered, “Yeah. The cheeseburger’s good too.” His heart beat accelerated when he met the Oblivious Man’s dark hazel eyes. The man turned back as Patrick asked him if he wanted anything else and Zack had to fight the urge to scream. He didn’t want the man to turn away and forget about him he wanted him to notice him. An image of his soft pink lips came unbidden to his mind and he swallowed thickly and turned to look at the stage where Emil was trying to keep out of touching distance without seeming to do so. Zack groaned internally, now Pig and his friends had some alcohol in them they weren’t going to be as careful of the rules as they had before.
“Animals.” The husky word wasn’t meant for Zack but he turned and looked at the man anyway, “What?” he mentally kicked himself. He was not looking for a relationship, he was taking a break and healing his body and spirit before he tagged himself back into the game of Love. He tried to repeat that mantra but as soon as Oblivious Man’s eyes met his he lost it all. Oblivious Man sighed, “That group. They drag me out to these places whenever they can, make asses out of themselves and then get kicked out.” He thanked Patrick when he slid a hot burger and fries in front of him. He told himself to not ask anymore questions but the man’s voice was irresistible, he couldn’t hear the husky tones enough.
“Why come if you don’t like it?” that actually had him curious. He’d never met anyone who didn’t like a nice strip club. Oblivious Man ate a fry before he answered, “Jimmy and Johnny, the two in the back not paying attention, make me feel guilty for not hanging out with them enough.” He gave Zack a wry smile and ate another fry, “Yet we always end up the same way, me at the bar and them catching an early ride home so they can screw.”
Zack wondered how much he’d had to drink tonight, a hundred different thoughts followed that one and not one of them Zack liked. He was not going to take this man home, he was not going to take him to the back room, he was not going to have sex with him no matter how delicious his lips looked or how soft his skin might be or how good that husky voice would sound screaming his name. He shook his head to clear his thoughts; another thing he wasn’t going to do would be to walk out on stage with a hard on. He didn’t need those animals to see that. He watched Emil hurry off the stage, he had to go back and start getting ready again but he didn’t want to leave Oblivious Man without having at least his real name.
“What’s your name?” he asked in, what he hoped was, a nonchalant tone. Oblivious Man smiled at him and held out his hand, “Matt.”
Zack took his hand and was surprised to feel how rough it was, he bit back a dirty thought before it could grow and also introduced himself, “Zack.” He looked over at the stage when the music started up and saw Brian saunter on stage. His eyes swept the room and landed on Zack and a smile lit his features before he turned back to the howling crowd in front of him.
“I have to go get ready…” he paused and bit his lip he wanted to ask the man to stay but remembering his dislike of strip clubs he wondered if it was the actual strippers that he didn’t like. Matt looked at him confused, “Get ready? For what?”
The choice of telling or not telling was officially gone, he sighed and waved his hand over to the stage and prayed his voice would stay steady, “I’m on after Brian.” His tone was a little heavier than usual but Matt didn’t know him so he didn’t know. He looked at the stage and then at Zack, “You’re a stripper?” he didn’t sound accusing and Zack felt some tension leave his shoulders and nodded. Matt snorted, “Score one for mom.”
Zack blinked, “What?” now he was definitely wondering how much Matt had, had to drink. Matt looked up at him with surprisingly clear eyes and explained, “My mom said I’d wanna date a stripper.”
A/N:
So I realized, as I was reading over this, that the whole time-space continuum has been totally fucked up in this story and I decided to fix it. So now everything has been fixed and I'm rushing back to Forget to Remember and I'll see ya'll soon =D
