Three Times Chloe Should Have Kissed Lisa (and the one time she did)
---
1.
Curtain call of that first concert (one night thing, ha!), and 16-year old Chloe finds herself happy and breathless with excitement. She sang, she sang and people loved it. Everyone is smiling, congratulating the other and trying to see each other over the enormous bouquets they receive.
There’s a hand on her shoulder, and she turns to see Ms. Kelly (“Lisa,” she’ll remind Chloe later with a gentle smile) grinning at her. “You did wonderful,” she says, her hazel eyes liquid pools of joy. It’s something about the music, Chloe knows, that makes them all like this. Even Maeve, whom Chloe doesn’t really get along with, seems different.
“Thanks, you too.” Chloe says back, smiling just as wide.
They both are looking at each other, and for a brief moment, Chloe would like to lean in and kiss Ms. Kelly ever so softly, just a tiny gentle peck on her smiling mouth. And then, then Chloe wants to kiss her again and again and again…
“Brilliant job ladies!” David crows from the doorway, and the moments is broken as Maeve and Orla race over and hug him, squealing giddily and most unlike themselves. Ms. Kelly grins at Chloe again, squeezes her shoulder and then goes over to David to hug him too.
For the rest of the night, Chloe keeps thinking about how much she really, really wants to kiss Lisa Kelly.
2.
New York City, their rehearsal for their first concert of their tour and Chloe is going to be sick. It’s one thing to be performing in front of your countrymen, but another thing entirely to perform onstage in America. Audiences are different here, Mairead tells her that morning over breakfast. Mairead would know, seeing as she’s been here before.
Now, leaning against the wall of the green room, Chloe is beginning to wonder if this was a good idea in the first place. She misses her family, misses the weather, the damn time zone; hell, she misses proper tea with breakfast in the morning, not the swill the hotel was trying to pass off as tea.
There’s wetness on her face, and Chloe realizes she’s crying. Damn it, she’s crying. She sniffles and wipes at her eyes with her sleeve, but it doesn’t do any good. Her shoulders shake with silent sobs as she slides down the wall and hugs her knees to her chest, burying her face in them. She just wants to go home.
Someone sits beside her and puts an arm around her shoulder, pulling her into their lap. Chloe unconsciously curls into it, her hands making fists in the person’s shirt and cries more.
The person starts humming softly, and Chloe gives a tiny start as she realizes who it is. She opens her eyes to see she’s in Lisa’s lap, and Lisa is humming something that sounds like a lullaby. She starts to get up, but the look in Lisa’s eyes keeps her there. She lays her head back on Lisa’s chest, blushing even as she cries.
“I remember my first tour,” Lisa says after Chloe manages to stop crying. “It was with Riverdance. I was 23 and scared half to death even though I’ve been singing my whole life.”
Chloe listens to Lisa’s heartbeat, the rumble of her voice in her chest and thinks that she could stay here forever.
Lisa puts her hand under her chin and tilts her eyes up to look at her. “You’ll be fine Chloe,” she tells her, smiling. “You’ve survived this far, haven’t you?”
Chloe nods and Lisa chuckles. “The nice thing about being on tour is that you can demand proper tea. Flatley had to have it every morning and demanded we all drink it too, so I know you can get it if he can.”
Chloe giggles and sniffles, wiping her eyes with the corner of her sleeve. “Thanks.” She says.
There is a pause, and Chloe realizes just how close she is to Lisa, and if she leaned forward just a little bit she could…
“Hey, are you two coming to rehearsal or are you going to sit in here and cry like a bunch of old grannies?” Maeve stands there with her hands on her hips, semi-glaring.
Chloe opens her mouth to retort when Lisa says, “we were waiting for you Maeve.”
The blonde huffs and walks off, causing the two to erupt into giggles. Chloe stands and helps Lisa up, and then is surprised when she’s pulled into a hug. She returns it, reveling in their closeness.
Lisa smiles, “Come on,” and Chloe follows her onto the stage, thinking that she really, really wants to kiss Lisa.
3.
It’s somewhere in the United States again, Colorado this time. Chloe is 18 and walking back to the bus from her dressing room after a show when she sees Lisa sitting in one of the chairs staring at her phone.
She walks over to where the woman is sitting and gently touches her shoulder. “Hey.”
Lisa looks up at her, and Chloe can tell she’s been crying. “Hi.”
“You all right?” Chloe asks, sitting down on one of the chairs and cursing whoever it is that’s making Lisa cry.
After a moment, Lisa shakes her head.
“Is everything ok?” Chloe asks as she reaches out and puts a hand on Lisa’s knee. It is then that Lisa breaks. She hangs her head and begins to cry, her shoulders shaking in hard sobs that echo in Chloe’s mind. It throws the younger girl for a loop mostly because Lisa is the strong one. Lisa’s the one whole holds them all together. Chloe just wants to pull the woman into her arms and hold her. She can’t manage that, so she maneuvers a bit and puts an arm around Lisa’s shoulders, holding her as best she can.
Lisa sobs like her heart is breaking, and Chloe is wondering if it really is when Lisa manages to whisper, “Scott had an affair… He’s moving out of the house and going with her…. The boys… the boys are with my mum, thank God… he said that I put my career and the boys ahead of him and… he couldn’t be with me anymore…”
Chloe remembers the one time she met Scott. He’d had this look she’d wanted to wipe off of his face. Now she wants to punch it off of him, and then beat him into a bloody pulp. “Lisa, he’s daft. Any man who thinks you should put him above everything else is an idiot and doesn’t deserve to be married to anyone.”
Lisa looks up at Chloe, “But why is he with another woman? What did I do to make him leave me?”
“Lisa, you didn’t do a damn thing, ok? You ARE a good mother! You call them every night and every morning. You send them souvenirs from every place we ever go. You’ve even brought them with you! The boys love you so much. Sure, they miss you, but they love you and understand that this is what you love! And Scott, well… he couldn’t understand that you love singing. Singing is who you are, and he couldn’t accept that, so he hopped into bed with the first floozy that called him the best dancer since Michael Flatley and decided to run away with her.”
Lisa has stopped crying and when Chloe finishes her rant she’s smiling. “I’ve met Flatley and trust me; he’s the worst dancer alive; anyone is better than him.”
Chloe blushes, but Lisa giggles and sniffles. “Thank you Chloe.” She turns in Chloe’s arms and kisses her on the cheek, hugging her. “Thank you so much.”
Chloe’s heart is pounding as she holds Lisa close. She smells like vanilla and something else Chloe can’t place, but it makes her dizzy with want. She could kiss her. She could pull away and lean down and kiss her right now and it wouldn’t matter if Lisa had any feelings for her at all, she could kiss her and the world would be right.
She even pulls away and looks down at Lisa, whose face is mere inches from her own. God, she wants to kiss her. She looks so beautiful and perfect even in tears that Chloe feels herself drawn to the woman.
Lisa doesn’t move. She lets Chloe move closer, now watching the blonde tentatively lean towards her. They’re barely a centimeter apart now, and Chloe can feel Lisa’s breath on her face as she tilts her head, closes her eyes and…
Someone opens a door to their left and Chloe’s eyes fly open. She catches Lisa’s eyes, and she realizes what she was about to do. She was such an idiot! Lisa was an emotional wreck and she was about to… to…
She stands up quickly. “I… uh… I’m sorry!” she gasps before she flees, hearing Lisa call after her.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid…” she chants as tears blur her vision and she races up onto the bus. She throws herself onto her bunk and buries her face in her arms, crying.
There’s another weight on the mattress, and she looks up to see Mairead sitting beside her. Chloe whimpers and crawls into the other blonde’s lap, crying as the fiddler gently strokes her hair.
(And the one time she finally did)
Lisa pins her against the wall, and Chloe struggles for a moment until Lisa says in her ‘mom’ voice, “Stop it.”
They’re in New York City and Chloe has been avoiding Lisa ever since they started the tour. All she can really think of was how they almost kissed in Colorado (almost a year ago), and she’s 19 now and has a ton of time to think about it. She thinks about it so much that she can’t even look Lisa in the face when they’re on stage.
“Chloe,” Lisa’s voice says, low and dangerous, and Chloe really does stop struggling and finally looks Lisa in the eyes.
They’re still that gorgeous hazel that haunts the girl in her sleep, but they’re filled with something… something that Chloe is afraid to name but she really, really wants to.
“Chloe, why did you try to kiss me?” Lisa whispers, her breath tickling Chloe’s ear. “Tell me why you tried to kiss me.” She says again, squeezing Chloe’s wrists. “Tell me, because it’s been driving a wedge between us and I want to know why.”
Chloe can hardly breathe. It feels like her heart is going to pound out of her chest as she stares at Lisa. Finally, she says softly, “Because I think… no, I know that I’m in love with you.”
Lisa’s eyes widen slightly, and she relaxes her grip. They’re both staring at each other; pressed against the other in a hallway that anyone could walk through at any second.
Chloe’s quite sure she’s going to faint; she feels dizzy and light-headed and her vision is blurring. But just as she’s really sure she’s going to, Lisa breathes, “Oh, Chloe” and—
Dear sweet god! Lisa is kissing her!
She doesn’t respond for a moment or two. Lisa starts to pull away, but Chloe’s mind springs into action, finally. She tilts her head and kisses back, her hands moving and cupping the small of Lisa’s back and pulling her closer. After a moment or two more, they pull apart, and Chloe gasps quietly, “But you—“
Lisa laughs gently, nuzzling Chloe’s nose. “I’m a woman who is quite possibly in love with you.” She smiles and then kisses Chloe again, this time nibbling on her bottom lip. Chloe moans and opens her mouth, letting Lisa’s tongue in to tangle with hers. She digs her fingertips into Lisa’s back and with a push switches their positions.
There’s a giggle to their left, and they quickly break apart, Chloe stepping in front of Lisa to protect her.
Mairead stands there, grinning like an idiot. “Well, I just came to tell you two lovebirds that rehearsal starts in about two minutes.” She grins again, every bit the sprite she portrays on stage. She winks, and then disappears.
Chloe can’t help herself- she collapses into giggles. She laughs and laughs until warm arms slide around her waist and Lisa rests her chin on her shoulder. It feels so perfect and right, and Chloe melts into her arms, the tension of the past few days drifting away.
“We better get to rehearsal.” Lisa murmurs, nuzzling her ear. “Though now I wonder how I’m going to keep my hands off of you…”
Chloe turns around and kisses Lisa quickly, “I’m sure we’ll manage somehow.”
