Gerard/Frank
- - - - -
The sun was beginning to set in majestic purples and reds; it would have been a romantic setting if it weren't a preface to a nightmare. The sounds of distress filtered through the large group of people that Gerard and his friends had decided to travel with.
Frank jogged beside him with Bob, Ray, and Mikey following. The highway's degrading pavement made for a tricky obstacle course; they had to rely on one of their friends to steady them if they stumbled.
Gerard now regretted ever listening to Ray's suggestion of free food and protection. They had camped up with morons.
"Fuck!" grumbled Bob, running behind him on his left, voicing all of their thoughts. "This is just fucking great!"
Fuck was right. They should have been at their destination hours ago. Hunting lodges were a perfect three days walk from each other, with basement shelters in between. Some how between the last safe house and the lodge they had lost their way.
If they didn't do something quickly, they were going to be dead by the end of the night. Getting eaten or taken to a Farm was something Gerard didn't want happening ever. He couldn't say he enjoyed his life, but he liked being free and alive too much, and he knew the others felt the same.
Frustratingly, the road ahead became steeper and eroded, causing the frantic group to slow their pace to safely travel down the declining hill. Gerard slid down a few inches ahead of Frank before taking his hand in a sweaty clutch, "Careful."
They supported each other as they scrambled back to flatter ground. Then were off again jogging at a quick pace, the darkening sky spurring on their dwindling energy.
"Do we stay with them or go?" Frank asked, still clutching Gerard's hand, letting himself be dragged along. "We have less than an hour to find anything."
Mikey laughed from his place next to Bob. "Didn't I say they were good for nothings? They have no idea what the hell they're doing!" Gerard heard Bob snort with agreement.
"I'm sorry guys, I should have never suggested that we hook up with them." Ray huffed, apologetically from the rapid pace they had under taken.
Frank spoke for all of them when he looked over his shoulder. "Man, you didn't know they'd turn out to be a bunch of dumb motherfuckers."
"Yeah," Mikey gasped. "You were just trying to help us, nothing wrong with that."
"But-" Ray tried to disagree when Bob interrupted.
"Ray, shut the fuck up, it isn't your fault!" It was left at that, even if Ray still didn't agree.
They went on quite for a few yards before Frank again asked with an air deprived voice, "So are we staying or bailing?"
Gerard couldn't decide what would be the best course of action for them as they continued on close together with a pack of panicking travelers. Sure, they could continue on with the people they were with now and hope they found shelter or go on their own and lessen the risk of being a midnight snack.
"Gee?" Mikey called out to him hoping to dredge up an answer when Gerard kept silent for too long. Why the fuck did he always have to have the answers?
"I don't fucking know Mikes! Ok? I have no fucking clue!" Gerard yelled, not looking back to see how his words had hurt his younger brother. He didn't have time to feel guilty; he had to think of something, because he was the leader. They relied on him to have the answers and the knowledge to keep them alive, even if he never asked for that responsibility.
Frank's hand tugged on his. "Hey." He pulled again when Gerard ignored him. "Hey."
"What?" Gerard about snapped after giving the other man a quick glance. 'Please just leave me alone Frank, I don't have a fucking clue as to what we should do, so just leave me alone.’
Frank gave his clammy hand a squeeze, trying to give him a sense of comfort Gerard in no way felt. "It's ok if you don't have all the answers, you know. You're only fucking human, Gerard," Frank panted.
He snorted, "Sure, Frank." He chanced a quick look to the sky. Anxiety boiled under his skin at the sight of the sun just winking over tall tree tops. "Like that's going to keep us from dying right now."
A sigh was all he got from the other man. They both knew that right now was not the time to have this argument, or any type of argument. They needed to keep their wits about them if they wanted to survive the night.
Sweat made his light summer clothes cling to his body, chafing him. The rolling hills of the Appalachian mountain's mocked Gerard, their winding roads and high tree tops. 'You're going to die,' the rocks of earth seemed to whisper. The thought made Gerard even more determined to find a way out of the mess they were in.
Then, as they ran near a hill covered with large oaks and tall aspens, the answer came to him. The trees! The trees with their thick foliage and bordering branches would be a good enough place to hide than fucking nothing.
He pulled Frank with him off the road and up the hill to where the large oaks sat waiting for them. He yelled back to the others his voice cracking. "Come on, we gotta to get to those trees before it's too late!"
Glancing back for only a second to make sure they were following, Gerard shoved Frank in front of him. "Run," he said into the shorter man's ear and gave him a push forward.
Frank gave him a look, then rushed ahead to the giants with their crowns of green. Mikey passed Gerard quickly, Bob right behind him. Ray panted as he caught up with Gerard.
Mikey was already helping Frank reach the lowest branches as Bob monkey-ed his way up ahead into the tree when they caught up. Gerard grabbed their dropped gear and shoved it with his own under a thick bush of mulberries, making sure to grab his weapons before Ray stuffed his own bag next to the others and followed Gerard back to the tree the others were attempting to climb.
Frank was letting out a string of curses as he tried to pull himself up onto the closest branch, Mikey was urging him to hurry and was kicked in the face by Frank's booted foot for his efforts.
Looking on with worry at the very few branches that would be thick enough to support all their weight, Gerard shared a glance with Ray. They were so fucked.
"We need to split up," Ray suggested. Gerard frowned at the idea. "Hey don't worry, you stay with Frank and Mikey can come with me."
"Sounds like a plan to me" Mikey said, giving Frank's foot a push up.
Frank groaned as his head hit unforgiving wood. "Mikey, You sonofabitch," he growled, but Gerard was relieved. At least the guy was finally climbing the tree.
Ray nodded and jogged off to another tree close by. He climbed up as easily as Bob had. Mikey gave Gerard a hug, "Hey, no worries. Ray and I are both packing. You just take care of Frank."
Swallowing, Gerard could only nod as he watched his brother run off after Ray, leaving him to swing up after Frank. 'They'll be ok, they have to be ok', he thought as he pulled himself from branch to branch.
"Stay close to the trunk, Frank," he told his friend once they had gotten up far enough. Frank gave a small nod before following the advice. Bob had maneuvered to a branch lower on the other side of the thick trunk, already tying himself securely to the oak.
Making sure the branch supported his weight along with Frank's, Gerard pulled himself up behind the other younger man. Frank gave him a small glance as he hugged brown bark.
"Are Toro and Mikey going to be ok on their own?" Bob whispered up as he pulled out a hand gun.
"They have their equipment," Gerard murmured, confirming that his own weapon was fully loaded. "It's Frank we have to worry about."
Bob sighed. "Yeah."
Frank didn't say anything, just pressed his face further into the trunk of the tree. He said nothing to the other's comments about his obvious need for protection, even if he felt any type of embarrassment.
Gerard noticed how quiet Frank was as he wrapped a thick leather cord around the two of them and the tree. "You ok?"
He got only a sharp nod for his troubles, but he left it alone. Frank always got like this during the night and Gerard didn't blame him. Especially after everything the younger man had gone through. So he tied the knot securely in silence.
Once he was done, Gerard wrapped his arms around Frank's middle and waited for the thin veil of light to finally disappear.
Frank's breathing became raspy and short moments after the stars appeared and the sky blackened. Gerard tried to keep him calm by pressing his chest into Frank's back more firmly as he nuzzled his face into a sweaty neck. They couldn't afford to make a sound or movement. Nothing to give away their position to the monsters now cavorting in the night's skies.
They only had to wait an hour for the screams to fill the thick summer air. Frank gave a small whimper, pressing himself further against the oak. Gerard could only press kisses of reassurance to the shivering neck in front of him and make his hold a little tighter.
The heat, heavy against their skin, had brought the smell of death from yards ahead of their hiding place. The unfortunate souls that were trying to escape the blood bath, brought a smell that was so strong and thick, it gave Gerard the sense that they were sitting in the middle of the carnage he knew was happening.
Frank panicked his way through half of the night before passing out. It brought only a small amount of relief to Gerard, as he was left to hear the screams echoing up into the trees alone. Thank god they left those dumb motherfuckers to their fate.
It was only their rotten luck rearing it's ugly head moments later when three frantic boys smashed their through a patch of bushes less than a yard from their trees, tripping and throwing sharp glances behind them.
'Fuck!' Gerard thought, as he waited for whatever was following to come crashing through the bushes as well. He shifted, trying not to disturb Frank as he pulled out his gun and released the safety. He wouldn't go down without a fight.
Thankfully someone must have listened to his desperate prayers and nothing followed the fleeing boys. Returning the safety, Gerard placed his weapon back in its holster. Bob made a motion to the kids under them. Gerard nodded. He hadn't heard anything following them. Plus, Bob would have felt guilty for not helping them if he had the chance.
The boys were right under them and about to pass by when Bob called out to them to climb up. Gerard looked on as they scrambled up a few branches down from his and Frank's. They looked to be in shock and Gerard didn't need to imagine what they'd just been through. Luckily, Frank never woke up.
The newest additions to their tree were smart enough not to make a sound; he could only hear their heavy breathing and sniffling. That too quieted down to nothing after a few minutes. They quickly fell asleep, Bob nodding off right after. Gerard stayed awake the rest of the night for anything that might have followed the boys, but nothing came. It was only as the stars started dimming that he let his eyes close.
