Ch 1
Carrie scrolled through the major TV stations before she switched the TV to ESPN. She smiled and shifted around on the couch until she was comfortably laying down. She loved to tour, but she loved it even more when she had a day off. Ever since she had won on American Idol, days off had become more of a wish than a regular occurrence, so when she had some time away from business she just wanted to relax and catch up on things that she had missed.
"Underwood, you are a bitch!” Matt laughed as he walked into the living room and sat down in the chair next to his boss. His laughter increased when he saw his friend continue to stare at the TV. “Ah, sports. I guess I should be glad you didn’t decide to shop.”
"What’s new about that?" Carrie didn’t look away from the screen. She didn’t like to watch the news portion of the show, but she knew that meant the game reports would be on soon. “Did I kick a puppy? Because that’s obviously made up.” Carrie lifted her head to check and see if Ace was in his basket. If she was home, her dog liked to sit with her, so the only other place Ace could be was in his puppy basket.
Matt tossed the magazine in his hands on the coffee table when his friend tapped her hand on the couch to get the dog’s attention. “Obviously.” He knew that Carrie didn’t like to hear what was said about her, so he wasn’t going to give her the details. As her employee, he had made her aware of the opinion published; however, as her friend, his lack of details meant she didn’t have to deal hear the untruthful claims.
Carrie let her hand drop down to the floor when Ace made it over to the couch. She pet the dog for a few moments, and then tapped her hand against her hip so that Ace would know it was okay to get on the couch with her. Once Ace settled down beside her, she looked at the TV and gave a silent cheer that Sports Center had started. “We are so not going out for the next week.”
Matt leaned back in his chair as the previews of the night’s topics flashed across the TV screen. “If that were possible you know I’d be the first person to make it happen.” He didn’t want to talk about her schedule. His blonde boss had four days off, not a week, and one of those days included an awards show. “Tommy called and said your dresses for the event Sunday arrived.”
"Great.” Carrie began to pet Ace again since the dog hadn’t run off. She didn’t have to ask if the dresses were everything that Tommy, her stylist, and the designer had helped her choose for the awards show that she would attend Sunday. Carrie winced at the harsh shove between two basketball players. “Wish I could have seen the rest of that game live.”
Matt would have rolled his eyes at the comment if it had been about one of the girly shows that Carrie watched. “Yeah.” He propped his feet up on the coffee table and smiled as he listened to the commentator on screen. “You should pull a diva moment during the playoffs next January.” Matt struggled not to laugh when Carrie turned her head to look at him. “If they’re gonna call you a diva and a bitch, then you should act it, and the football playoffs are a good reason.”
Carrie laid her head back down on the couch. “You coulda used a better defense.” She chuckled when Matt called her one of the aforementioned names. “Jerk. You be carefully, buddy, or I can just as easily call Tommy and have him spend my free time with me.” Carrie snickered when Ace ran off. “See? Ace agrees.”
”Yeah, I’m sure the dog agrees. The thing probably wants Tommy to come over so that he can get into everything again while you go squeal-y girl with Tommy about clothes talk.” Matt didn’t even see the pillow Carrie had thrown at him until it smacked him in the side of the face. “Real mature, not diva at all.” Matt quickly threw the pillow back at Carrie.
Carrie didn’t speak as the pillow hit her hip, she didn’t grab it either, she continued to watch the TV. She hadn’t even looked away but for a second when she had thrown the pillow at Matt. “Wait until the commercial break. I’ll get ya.”

Carrie wasn’t thrilled that the last few hours of her time off were at a after party, though she had won an award. A win was always good. Carrie looked over the other partygoers as she searched for someone that she wanted to talk with for a while. She smiled when she noticed Kelly Clarkson, but her smile immediately changed into a slight frown. At the last event they had been at together, she had snapped at Kelly. The other Idol probably wouldn’t want to talk to her.
She actually couldn’t even remember what Kelly had said that had made her snap at the other girl. At the time, Kelly’s voice and presence had been one thing too many for her to deal with after a full day of work in the studio and a number of interviews. Carrie had wanted to apologize to Kelly in person, because she had walked off after the incident, but there hadn’t been a chance since the encounter. She took a deep breath as she mentally prepared herself for all the possible reactions the other girl might have, and then Carrie walked over to Kelly.
Kelly tried to ignore the uneasy feeling that had settled over her while she and her best friend, Ashley, had spoken. She had brought Ashley with her because she wanted to have someone fun to talk to at the party, but that had changed the minute Ashley had seen Carrie Underwood. Ashley was upset for the way the blonde country singer had treated her at another awards function, so her friend had left her since she had refused to walk away too. Kelly’s uneasy feelings turned to nervous ones when she saw that Carrie was now next to her. She turned towards Carrie, even though the other girl had hurt her feelings before. “Hey.”
Carrie let out the breath of air she had held on the walk over. If Kelly could talk to her, then she assumed the brunette wasn’t angry with her. “Hey, Kelly.” Carrie smiled and glanced over the shorter girl’s appearance. “You look great. The color suits you.” Carrie was fairly certain someone had told her that black was Kelly’s favorite choice for clothes, but the other girl did look nice.
Kelly smiled because of the compliment, although almost as quickly as she had smiled, she let the corners of her lips relax. “You look great too.” She couldn’t act like Carrie hadn’t been mean previously, but she wouldn’t be rude. It didn’t matter what Carrie thought of her or the way the blonde acted, she didn’t have to lower herself and be disrespectful. Kelly could be, and had been, polite to people that had said treated her worse than Carrie.
Carrie had to force herself to smile when it faltered because of the cool tone Kelly had taken with her. She couldn’t blame Kelly for the cautious behavior. Carrie took a deep breath and tightened her grip on her purse. “I’m sorry, I can’t act like nothing happened last time. I want to apologize for the way I snapped at you.” Carrie stopped for a moment and looked into Kelly’s eyes so the other girl could have a chance to talk. She hadn’t meant to take over the conversation, she just wanted the chance to make things right between them. Carrie was glad she was alone; she would have been embarrassed for her friends or employees to see her now.
Kelly thought over Carrie’s words for a few moments, and then she smiled of her own accord. She had thought she had offended Carrie that night. She couldn’t wait to tell Ashley; maybe then her friend would stop trash talking Carrie. “It’s all right. I’m happy you apologized, though from now on I’ll know never to bring up parties with you.” Kelly laughed when Carrie’s serious expression changed into a lighter one, complete with a grin.
Carrie had nearly winced when she heard the bit about a party. She was sort of glad she hadn’t paid attention to what Kelly had said when she had gotten snippy with the other girl previously; it would have made her feel like an even bigger idiot than she felt currently. “Well, I’m still sorry. I’m not trying to make excuses, but I just want to say that I was really stressed that night. I had been in the studio, and then there were a ton of interviews.” Carrie sighed and tried not to think about it since she was going back into virtually the same schedule the next day. “And when you-"
Kelly reached out and touched Carrie’s arm so the other girl would stop apologizing. “I said it’s okay, Carrie. You don’t have to keep saying you’re sorry. It’s forgotten.” Kelly pulled her hand back when Carrie smiled at her appreciatively. She understood why Carrie had reacted so badly; a few months ago she might have reacted the same way. Kelly wouldn’t make Carrie apologize for something that shouldn’t even be an issue.
Carrie would have continued to apologize, but she knew from previous encounters that Kelly meant it when the girl declared everything forgotten. “Good.” Carrie nodded her head a few times as she relaxed her grip on her purse. Her days off had given her time to catch up on her rest, and now that she and Kelly were on good terms she could put the whole bad experience behind her and enjoy the last couple hours of her vacation.
Kelly was surprised when Carrie took her hand and led them to the nearby table that she and Ashley had occupied since the party had begun. She didn’t say anything when Carrie let go of her hand to pull out chairs for both of them, she just sat down so that she and Carrie could face each other while they spoke. Kelly glanced around to see where Ashley was, and then she smiled when she saw her friend at the bar. “So…”
Carrie was encouraged by the tiny smile on Kelly’s face. “No one really gets what you and I are going through, ya know?” She and Kelly had always talked at parties, they had exchanged phone numbers with the promise to call each other, but they were always too busy to talk with one another. She wanted to be friends with Kelly. Carrie didn’t want to let the promise fall aside again because of her past behaviors or their careers. “I want to spend more time with you, Kelly. We always say we’re going to get together, and we never do. We have to stick together, right.”
Kelly chuckled at the grin on Carrie’s face, and because the other girl wasn’t talking hypothetically; Carrie’s voice was full of confidence. She liked that Carrie could put the past behind them and be so self-assured. “I did try to ask you to my party.” Kelly let herself laugh when Carrie lightly blushed. “I’m teasing.” She reached out and held Carrie’s hand again so that the taller girl wouldn’t pull away. Kelly had to smile when Carrie called her a goof and continued to hold her hand. “I’m having another party at my house here in a couple weeks. Want to come?”
Carrie would make time for the party if she didn’t have the night free. “I’d love to come to your party.” She was sure she could get to the party since it was in town. She had a few promotional things because of her single, but for the most part she would be in Nashville to work on her album. Carrie opened her mouth to make a joke, but Kelly’s friend Ashley came up to the table. Carrie pulled her hand away from Kelly’s and stood up when she saw the dirty look on Ashley’s face. “Call me when you get the details together.”
Kelly had not missed the unpleasant looks that her best friend directed at Carrie. She didn’t care what Ashley thought, and to prove it, she stood and hugged Carrie tightly. “I will. Maybe if you’re lucky I’ll call you before then.” Kelly sat back down as Carrie walked away with a gentle laugh. The conversation with Carrie had gone better than she had thought it would, and she wouldn’t let Ashley try to say otherwise. “She apologized.”
Ashley sat down in her seat next to Kelly, though she had the juvenile urge to sit in the one Carrie had vacated, just so the blonde wouldn’t have a seat if the other girl came back. “She probably didn’t mean it. You saw for yourself how she was the last time.” She didn’t normally believe what she read in the less reputable magazines, but she believed what was said about Carrie Underwood after the way the country singer had gone off on Kelly.
"Would she have said she wanted to come to my party if she didn’t mean it?” It wasn’t even a question to Kelly. She knew Carrie was sorry and that the girl had meant every word of their conversation. Kelly grinned when Ashley couldn’t come up with a retort for her announcement. “I told you. Carrie’s a sweetheart. Thanks for abandoning me when she came over by the way.” Kelly giggled because she wasn’t serious. If she was anything, she was glad that Ashley hadn’t been around.
Ashley picked her drink up and took a sip as she momentarily reprimanded herself. She should have stayed so that Carrie hadn’t had the chance to fool Kelly with the shy country girl act. “I wouldn’t have stayed back this time if she had gone off on you again.” Ashley shrugged her shoulders when she saw Kelly’s impervious smile. “Let’s hope she’s really the girl you think she is.” On some level, Ashley wanted Kelly to be right, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t yell at Carrie Underwood if the girl mistreated her friend again.
