Author’s note: This is my first published story. I’ve been getting pestered by a friend of mine (you know who you are) to do so… so I’ve given in.
Disclaimer: In no way do I have any ownership, relationship or connection with A Midsummer Night’s Dream written by the amazing and awesome William Shakespeare, to Harry Potter, or to Supernatural.
In no way do I have any ownership, relationship or connection with celebrities mentioned, even briefly, such as Justin Timberlake, N’Sync, Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt, Jake Gyllenhaal, or Sean Connery.
I’m not making money from this story. It’s make-believe. It’s a good time, happy fun, and adult bedtime story.
Thanks. Enjoy.
I held my breath as the Tribunal emerged from deliberation in their chambers. This was it… his only shot… If he failed, he would never be more than an apprentice. He would become a vagabond among his class. I didn’t want to see that happen. Not for him. Not for his child.
I held my hand to my stomach. Although no one else could tell, I knew. The magic I control is very powerful.
The Tribunal took their seats.
The highest seated member glanced at a piece of paper and looked at my Beloved.
“Justin Randall Timberlake.” He called. “This Tribunal has decided that…”
His voice trailed off for a moment as I remembered meeting Justin nearly two years ago now.
-
It was a cool night… The moon was full and shone brightly down upon the glade. My friends and many others were playing and dancing in the ring. I lazily lay upon one of the toadstools of the ring, watching the others. Willow and Autumn giggled as they floated through the air, passing me by.
“Come dance with us!” Willow called. Her green and orange wings fluttered a bit.
I rolled my head to look at her. “I need to rest. You forget that I’ve been here long before you.”
They continued on dancing, when, suddenly, a loud snapping of a twig caught everyone’s attention. The distant sound of dogs barking was coming closer.
All of the faeries, including myself, scrambled into hiding… and then… there was this… beautiful youth… dark blonde hair… blue eyes like sapphires…
“How dare he interrupt our dance!” Willow grumbled.
“He looks so… scared.” I whispered to my friends.
I tend to act before I think, and I fluttered off towards the young man looking around in a panic.
Autumn rolled her eyes and Willow pinched the bridge of her nose.
Finally Autumn tore her eyes away from me to speak to her friend. “Where do you suppose he gets that from?”
Willow chuckled. “Certainly not his mother.”
The young man was looking around the glade frantically. I hovered behind him and closed my eyes. My body grew bigger, and my wings disappeared.
He noticed me and totally freaked.
“AAH!!” He jumped pretty damn far back. “Who are you?!”
I raised an eyebrow. “Whom are you running from?”
He whipped his head around warily. “Bandits.”
“Bandits, huh?”
“They raided our camp. I was left behind by my master.”
The barking dogs were getting closer.
I glanced in the direction of the barking. “If you want to save your ass, follow me.”
He ran behind me, as I led him to a lake nearby. “Where are we going?”
“Right here. Close your eyes.”
He looked at me with some distrust. Ok. I understood. It’s to be expected right?
“What are you going to do?” He asked.
I looked him dead in the eye. “I’m going to save your life. Now close your damn eyes.”
He heaved out a sigh and did as I’d told him. I held out my hands and a hazy blue bubble formed around him. The bubble began to float towards the water and descended into the lake. He opened his eyes and was about to scream as the water completely engulfed the bubble.
Just then, several dogs and men on horseback came galloping out of the woods.
The man in lead called out to me. “You there! Have you seen a young man pass by here? He’s about your height and age.”
I sat down on a boulder. “I’ve seen no one pass here. Well, unless you want to count you… but a young man? No.”
He grumbled to himself. “Very well. We’ll pick up his trail ‘round the lake!”
And off they rode in the moonlight.
As I watched, the bubble reemerged and landed next to the boulder I sat on. It popped and the guy stumbled a bit.
“How the hell did you do that?” He asked incredulously. “I’ve never seen magic like that before.”
“It’s easy.” I looked at him. “I asked the air to protect you.”
He eyed me suspiciously. “What’s your name?”
I narrowed my eyes just as suspiciously. “What’s yours?”
“I asked you first.”
“I’m older.”
“Ha! I doubt it!”
“Trust me. I’m older.”
“Answer my question.”
“Geez. Demanding little shit, aren’t you?” I slid off the rock and stood before him. “My name is Puck.”
He gasped. “The son of Oberon and Titania?!”
Immediately I was uneasy. “How do you know of Oberon and Titania?”
“All faeries are the sworn enemies of my kind!”
My jaw nearly unhinged and fell to the ground. “You’re a wizard?”
Imagine the sound of screeching tires.
Let me back up a moment. Wizards and Faeries… how should I explain it? Faeries are to wizards as water is to oil. We don’t get along. Something about a stolen this and a stolen that on both sides. The war has been going on for over four thousand years. I never really cared for fighting. Make love, not war. Dad thinks I’m a hashish-smoking hippie.
Needless to say, I’m not a fan. Many had branded me a wizard sympathizer, yet no one would dare say it to my face. It’s not that I sympathize… I just think it’s downright dumb.
And… play.
His immediate expression was that of disappointment. “Well… I’m an apprentice.”
I looked around uncomfortably. “I guess you have to start somewhere, right?”
He kicked the boulder. “I’ve been twice as long at my apprenticeship as my friends who’d started at the same time.”
“Are you… slow?”
“No! My master refuses to teach me! He wants a servant. Not an apprentice.”
“Well, shit. I’m sorry to hear that.”
He plopped down on the boulder. “It’s not your fault.”
“So what’s your name?”
I watched him eyeball me for a minute. “Justin.”
“Nice to meet you, Justin.” My hand extended out to him.
He hesitated, but shook my hand anyway. “You too.”
A sigh escaped my lips. “How about I teach you magic?” Again with my non-thinking actions.
He eyed me warily. “You would teach me faerie magic?”
“Sure. It’s better for you anyway. Does a body good.”
I watched Justin think about it. “Why should I trust you?”
“Because I saved your life.”
“How can I know this isn’t a faerie trick?”
“You don’t. It’s called trust.”
“Then I’ll pass, thanks.”
I could hear dog barking getting closer again. “Are you sure you want to spend the rest of your life as someone’s slave?”
I could tell he heard it too. “Maybe it couldn’t hurt to have some faith. Keep your enemies closer, right?” He scuttled off the boulder.
“Excellent.” I started to head back to the glade. “So let’s get going.”
“Going where?” He asked following.
“Avalon, of course.”
He was dumbfounded. “You’re taking me to the Faerie Realm?”
“Well, duh. It’s the best place to learn faerie magic.”
“You can’t be serious…”
“Does it seem like we have time to joke?”
“But… they’ll know what I am…”
I stopped short and realized this to be true. I studied him a moment. “I can fix that.” I waved a hand over him and his form began to shrink, as did mine.
Before long, Justin had a pair of fiery orange wings and was the same height as a water bottle. My own wings popped out of my back and I stretched them, once the change was complete. Justin was turning in circles trying to look at his own wings. What a doof.
“You can look in a mirror once we get to my home.” I grabbed his hand and we flew off to the faerie ring.
The funny thing was, some genetic traits are the reverse for faeries. Blonde hair and blue eyes are a dominant characteristic. Justin would fit in more so than I would. That is, if I wasn’t already known as the Faerie Prince. I was a rarity among faeries. Brown hair and hazel eyes. Really weird, to be honest.
The timing was perfect, when we’d arrived. Justin and I touched down on one of the toadstools as the others began twirling and dancing around the ring, faster and faster. A portal suddenly burst open and everyone zoomed in. Justin looked hesitant, but I took his hand and smiled in reassurance.
Justin and I flew in and before we knew it, we were standing on a hill with luscious green grass, and a view of a castle on the next hill.
“This is amazing!” Justin cried. “It’s all so beautiful.”
“Yeah. It is.”
As we approached the gates to the castle, a guard called out.
“Halt! Who goes?!” He bellowed.
I called back, “What’s up, Elmwood?”
“Prince Puck! Glad to see you’ve returned safely!”
The gate opened up and we strode inside. Autumn came running towards us.
“Puck!” She called as she ground to a halt. “Your parents have heard of what you did! They’ve summoned you!”
I looked at her with a half open mouth and a look of irritation, before nodding and heading to the great hall. Justin entered just behind me, and there my parents sat upon their ridiculously large thrones. The entire Court was present, as usual.
We approached and I kneeled down. Justin was awestruck, and I could tell he was hesitating to kneel to the Faerie King. So I smacked his knee and he immediately kneeled next to me.
“Puck,” Oberon said with his usual commanding tone, “what’s this that I hear of you helping humans again.”
I stood up and Justin followed suit. “I did what I thought best, Father.”
“But why do you insist on helping these creatures?”
“They need it.”
One member of the court snorted. “These humans are not worth our time. They are beneath us! They’re almost as bad as those despicable wizards!”
I was getting pissed. That was Wormwood. He pisses me off in general. Doesn’t matter what. I just don’t like his attitude. He’s such a damn snob.
The irritation was evident on my face as I turned to speak to him. “That’s right, Wormwood. They’re beneath us. Even the little girl you’d begged to set you free from her net. If you’re so superior, how did you get caught?”
“A minor inconvenience that will never happen again, I assure you.”
“Or the time you were caught by a simple housewife tending her garden?”
“My attention had lapsed for but a second!”
“You are a fool, Wormwood! You think that you are better and grander than the humans because you’re weak among your own people!”
“If you were not the prince, I would cut you down with but a wisp of my magic!”
“I dare say, try, Wormwood.”
“Enough, children.” Oberon commanded. His demeanor softened a bit. “Puck, you are free to do as you please.” He chuckled. “Even your crusade to help the humans.”
Titania finally spoke, “Who is your friend, child?”
I forgot my anger and looked at Justin. Then to my mother I spoke, “This is…” I couldn’t say his real name. No faerie would name their child that. However, the current child-naming fad was more on the human side. “…Tristan. Tristan Oakleaf.”
Titania smiled gently at Justin… Tristan… you know what I mean. “It is a true pleasure to meet you, young one.”
Justin bowed. “The honor is mine, Majesty.”
She laughed. “Such wonderful manners.”
“His wings are absolutely breath taking!” said a young faerie girl as she stepped forward and ran her hand across them.
I angrily took his hand and pulled him to the opposite side of me. “Admire them as you wish, but from your own place.”
“Ho, ho!” laughed Oberon. “Puck has finally taken a love interest!”
I managed to hold it together, but Justin had a bit more trouble hiding his shock.
Right then, I did not want to be in that room. “If you will excuse us, Father. Our play in the human realm has us exhausted.” Oberon nodded and I looked to Titania and bowed. “Mother.”
Justin bowed as well and we took our leave. We were silent as we walked down the corridors.
“I hate the regal stuffiness in there.” I thought out loud.
Justin looked at me. “Love interest?”
I sighed. I knew this was coming. “If only you didn’t have to be so prim and proper, I’d say ‘cool.’ But remembering your P’s and Q’s is such a hassle at times.”
“Puck…”
“And that Wormwood! Can you believe the bastard?!”
“Puck!”
I stopped and finally faced the music. “It’s best that you don’t get involved with anyone here… I’m the only one who knows, so it makes sense that everyone should believe we are a couple.”
Justin thought a moment, and then nodded in agreement. “You’re probably right. The last thing we want is someone to find out the truth.”
I continued on and opened the door to my chambers, collapsing in a heap on the bed. I buried my face in the pillow and I realized Justin was still standing there. Man, I’m so not moving.
“What’s wrong?” I asked him.
From the sounds of the room, he hesitated to speak, and then he finally got around to blurting it out. “Where do I sleep?”
“Next to me, lover.” I couldn’t help of giggle like a drunken idiot. Sleep… so close…
I heard him sigh. “I’ll sleep on the couch.”
I was talking into the pillow now. “You will do no such thing.”
“And why is that?”
“Because someone may come in and see it. That could blow our cover. If it makes you feel better,” I held out a dagger for him, “keep this close to you.”
He hesitated again, but eventually crawled into bed next to me.
I turned my head to look at him. “You are now the prince’s boyfriend. I hope you adjust well to being treated like royalty.”
He finally laughed and relaxed a bit more. “I think I’ll be alright.”
“Good. Now get some rest. Tomorrow, we start your training.”
And train we did.
