Synyster stretched and shifted his head some on Shadows’ chest. A brief smile flickered across Shadows’ face. He was getting used to having Synyster’s warm body next to or on top of his. He was a little concerned his wanting to be with the angel every moment was detracting from his carefully molded image of a hateful and wrathful Fallen, but when Synyster’s sable wings touched his he figured it was worth it. Their comfortable silence was interrupted by the frantic flap of wings as Vengeance came to a sliding halt in the room. Shadows raised his head ready to tell him to find someone else to amuse him but the frenzied look on his face stopped him. “What’s wrong Vengeance? Where’s Christ?” Synyster moved off him so he could sit up. “They took him.” He panted harshly, Shadows couldn’t tell if he was out of breath or if the trauma of being separated from his lover was too much for him. “Who took him, love?” Shadows coaxed softly getting up and wrapping his massive wings around the shaking demon. He couldn’t imagine anyone from Eldur trying to take Christ again, but they had certainly done stupider things. “Malyce and Wrath. They said, they said he was being detained. They didn’t tell me why, I don’t know where he is.” His breath picked up even faster and his body quaked uncontrollably. Shadows growled low in his throat, soft fingers threaded through his feathers and Synyster’s soft voice whispered in his ear, “I’ll take care of him.” Shadows folded his wings back and softly kissed the small demon on the forehead, “I’ll find him, love.”
Shadows threaded his way through the dark stone passages of their cave fortress searching for the two Fallen that had taken Christ. He knew Malyce from a distance, he was a smaller angel with sharp curves on his wings and razor black eyes. Wrath he didn’t want to deal with, he was purely muscle and no brain. While he was searching he caught a glimpse of someone who could possibly be more helpful than any Fallen. “Vivian.” He hissed. The demon smoothly changed direction and sidled up to Shadows. “You’ve sensed something is wrong as well?” he asked. Shadows growled, “Not sensed, saw. Christ has been detained. I need to know where and Why.” Vivian’s brow furrowed. “My visions have been…sporadic. The future is not set yet and I don’t know which path we’re going to take. Master has been seeking my guidance more and more these past days but the questions he asks…they are too vague for me to sort for what he wants.” His voice was troubled and Shadows curled his lip. “I only need to find Christ, I will work out Lucifer’s oddities when Vengeance is appeased.” Vivian nodded and closed his eyes and after a few seconds his face paled and his eyes opened. “It’s not good Shadows.” He said shakily. “He’s being held in The Pit.” Shadows bit back a snarl and swiftly melded with the darkness again, before he could take off though Vivian gave him another bit of advice. “Tread softly Shadows. The paths are clearing.”
The Pit was a cavern deep, deep inside the mountain where Lucifer kept those that deeply displeased him. It was what humans conjured up when the word Hell was mentioned. Iron forged with holy water held demons and angels alike in claustrophobic cages. Lower demons patrolled the area poking and antagonizing the entrapped beings. It was unbearably hot, so deep in the mountain the stones glowed red, few survived more than a day in The Pit. Shadows folded his wings back tightly and already felt sweat trickling down his temple. The heat from the walls singed his sensitive wings and he moved quickly avoiding the slow and stupid lower demons and searching the tiny cages for Christ’s familiar wings and face.
He found his little demon in a miserable huddle striving vainly to keep his body and wings away from the holy metal. Shadows detached from the darkness and flitted over to his cage. Christ looked up at him with dull dark eyes, a spark of life flashed when he saw Shadows crouched over outside the cage. “A moment longer Christ.” He murmured. “Oh, I think it will be longer than that.” A low voice said silkily. Shadows straightened and turned and bowed his head, “You’re not in The Pit often Master.” He murmured looking at him from under his lashes. Lucifer sauntered around Christ’s cage occasionally reaching in and plucking at his tightly wrapped wings. Christ whimpered pleadingly anytime they brushed the bars. Shadows clamped down on his tongue hoping the pain would keep the snarl building in his chest at bay. “Have Vengeance and Christ displeased you in some way, Master?” his voice sounded a little stilted but Lucifer continued his lazy circling of the trapped demon. “Do you know how vulnerable bonds make us Shadows?” he asked. “Vengeance and Christ are terrors of the mortal sphere and Eldur.” Shadows said avoiding the question. Lucifer paused and then continued his slow circles, “And if anyone, mortal of God himself saw what a mess they were in now they would laugh. This bond has grown too strong. It needs to be…diluted.” Shadows felt his teeth break through his tongue and he quickly loosened his jaw. “But Master—”
“Don’t argue with me Shadows, there is still a cage open.” Lucifer purred venomously. Shadows gave him a curt bow and disappeared.
He entered his room and found Vengeance wrapped in Synyster’s wings on the bed. The demon looked at him hopefully and then his face fell. Shadows crouched next to the bed and while spoke to Synyster. “You need to take him to the Earth plane.” He whispered Synyster propped himself up on his elbow and gave him a hard look, “What’s wrong?” He ignored his question and instead kissed Vengeance on the cheek. “I’ve found your lover and I’ll bring him to you, but you two need to leave.” With the last part he stared Synyster directly in the eye. “Go.” Reluctantly Synyster folded his wing back and allowed Vengeance to get up. “You’ll bring him?” he asked fearfully. Shadows pressed a kiss to his forehead, “I promise it, swear it upon my life. I will bring Christ back safely.” He murmured on his warm skin. Vengeance nodded hesitantly and then Synyster wrapped his arms around his waist and draped his wings around his shoulders. “We’ll be waiting.” He whispered. And then they were gone. Shadows took a deep breath and left the room for the last time.
He didn’t waste time getting to The Pit but when he arrived he found more lower demons and even some middle demons prowling around the hellish cavern. Striding out of the darkness he snarled at the lower demons too slow to get out of his way, the middle demons gave him a wide berth but watched him suspiciously. Without hesitation he jerked the bars open on Christ’s cage and the demon sprang out and huddled next to him pulling his wings close and licking the raw wounds he could reach.
“Shadows, you were not given permission to free the demon.” Malyce dropped from the ceiling and even though he was a head and shoulders shorter than him he smiled up at him with palpable hatred. Shadows returned the smile and in a blur turned and snapped his wings back shoving the smaller angel off his balance and snatched up Christ and escaped to the mortal plane. Shadows appeared in his favorite place, a white sand beach surrounded by jungle. Christ sniffed the air but didn’t let go. “Tell me where they are love and we’ll go.” Shadows whispered. “Scottish Rite Cathedral.” He whispered tiredly.
Vengeance was on him almost before he was completely in the Cathedral. Christ jumped from his arms onto Vengeance and sent them both tumbling to the ground, judging from the happy growls he didn’t think they cared. Synyster’s greeting was so much more subdued but Shadows was happy for it. He pulled Synyster close and kissed him softly on the lips brushing their wings together sending a delightful tingle through him. “Are you going to tell me what you’ve done?” Synyster whispered. Shadows sighed and skimmed his nose down his jaw line before kissing him again. “Lucifer is up to something.” He murmured. He cast a glance at the two demons still lying on the floor, Christ was curled on Vengeance chest purring contently. “We can’t stay here.” He said louder. Vengeance wrapped arms and wings around his lover, “What’s going on?” he whispered. Shadows held Synyster against his body, “I…I’m not certain.” He said. He didn’t like it. Lucifer was unpredictable at times but he had seemed…off somehow. He shook his head, “We need to move somewhere with fewer spies in the area.” Reluctantly Vengeance let go of Christ and the two picked themselves up off the floor. “Lead on.” Vengeance murmured tucking Christ under his arm. Shadows wrapped an arm around Synyster’s waist and took him to an out of the way place near the arctic circle.
As soon as they were solid Vengeance and Christ snuggled next to the angels under the warm protection of their heavy wings. “You certainly can’t get much more out of the way.” Vengeance said sarcastically. Shadows looked over the tundra squinting into the driving wind. “You’ll live.” He said flatly. Synyster moved to stand in front of him and gently took his head in his hands. “Tell me what’s wrong. Something has rattled your cage, what is it?” he demanded. The quiet, shy Avenger boldly looked Shadows in the eye and the bigger angel caved. “I don’t know. I have no idea what’s wrong. I spoke to Vivian when I was searching for Christ. He told me Lucifer hasn’t been himself the last few days.” He looked down at the demons huddled under his wings and gently brushed Vengeance’s hair out of his face before smoothing down the back of Christ’s. “He wasn’t himself.” He murmured. Christ looked up at him and shook his head before scooting closer to Vengeance, “We didn’t do anything to anger him.” He said quietly. Vengeance nodded and kissed his forehead. “That still doesn’t tell me why you’ve become so paranoid in the last hour.” Synyster pressed. Shadows’ troubled eyes met his calm walnut, “I…I feel like I’ve made a mistake.” He whispered. Now Synyster looked troubled and he pressed closer. “No, you didn’t. There was no reason for him to separate Vengeance and Christ. If he’s not himself…we don’t know what he would’ve done.” Christ shuddered against him and Vengeance gathered him close softly growling. Shadows nodded but the feeling persisted.
Before they could discuss anything else Shadows felt a portal open behind him. He whirled around snarling and only a second behind was Synyster and Vengeance’s snarls. “Shadows!” Vivian came through the portal, his usually aloof and calm composure an absolute mess. “Shadows he’s gone mad.” He hissed. Shadows dropped his wings and reached out to pull the demon closer. The sudden temperature change would be hard on his body. “What do you mean Vivian?” he asked smoothly. The demon shivered in the cold and Shadows folded his wings around him. “I mean exactly what I said.” He chattered. “Master has gone mad.” He looked up at him, his black irises larger than normal, “The future has made itself clear,” he shivered again and Shadows didn’t think it was from the cold. “it was a test. Christ was a test and you passed.” Shadows cupped his chin and gently shook his head back and forth, “Speak, don’t babble.” Vivian took a deep breath of the frigid air and slowly let it out and Shadows dropped his hand so he could finally speak. “The moment you freed Christ the future became clear.” Vivian started in a much calmer manner. “Lucifer tasted victory for the first time in millennia when we saved your human from the Avengers. It’s…he’s convinced himself we can finally conquer Eldur, we just…he needs…something.”
“And what ‘something’ would that be?” Synyster growled. “Eldur has lost some of its Avengers, not all. It’s still as powerful as Dimmur.” Vivian nodded, “I know, but, he’s past reason. He’s saw the Avengers fail and now he thinks himself invincible.”
“What is the something you spoke of Vivian.” Shadows demanded. He had a sick feeling in his stomach and hoped the demon’s answer would fix it. Vivian stared up at him with his too large eyes and too pale face. “He wants a Berserker.” He whispered finally. Shadows shuddered and tried to keep his breathing even. “He wanted Vengeance.” He said softly. Vivian slowly shook his head, “No Shadows. A middle demon would be a force if it went Berserk but a powerful enough angel could subdue one. He wants and angel. He wants you.” He looked back at the shimmering space of the portal he came through. “I can’t stay any longer. Shadows you have to…” he looked up at him helplessly, “There is no right path I can see. Keep the ones you love close and away from Dimmur.” He whispered and then he backed up and swiftly closed the portal behind him. Shadows stared at the empty space feeling like he’d been sliced open by an Avenger. Lucifer truly had gone mad. He wanted a Berserker. Soft feathers touched his and then warm breath fanned over the side of his neck. “I won’t let you.” Synyster whispered stroking his coal black feathers. “We can hide here with Vengeance and Christ and—” He made a choked sound and then his warm and comforting presence was gone. Shadows spun around, “Synyster!” he screamed. Without being asked or told Christ leaped into the air and was gone tracking the other angel. Vengeance pressed close to Shadows, “We won’t let anything happen to you or Synyster.” He promised nuzzling his chest. The knot in his chest began to loosen with the demon’s warm body and sincere words. “I love you, Vengeance.” He whispered wrapping his wings around the shivering demon. “Found him.” He answered, “Orange County, California.”

Jimmy’s POV
A floorboard creaked and he sat up with his hand already on the baseball bat leaning against the bed. A high squawk slipped out of him when he saw the dark winged angel standing just a few feet away. His studio apartment wasn’t very big and he took up most of the available space. He had his wings held close to his body and they still brushed the small stove and mini fridge. The shimmering black tunic he wore blended easily with the dark feathers. He collapsed back to his pillow with a hand on his chest when he recognized the beautiful angel. “Jesus. You couldn’t call?” he panted. “I’m sorry James,” Synyster said softly, “in more ways than one.” His dark eyes flicked around the small room taking in the various band posters, to do lists, and doodles he had thrown up to give the place some character. Jimmy sat up and tried to put his bat back and jumped again when he realized there was a small bat winged demon in the small space between his rickety cot and beaten up dresser where the bat was supposed to go. “Shit! Dammit Christ, you could’ve squeaked a floorboard or something.” He snapped. The demon flashed him a sharp toothed smile and flitted to Synyster where he crouched on the floor. “What’re you guys doing here? I don’t think it’s to check out my new pad since I’ve been here almost two years.” He said yawning wide enough to crack his jaw. When he looked at the pair again they had doubled. Now Vengeance was crouched on the floor with Christ and Shadows stood behind Synyster with an arm firmly wrapped around his waist. “We have a problem.” The husky voiced angel said. Jimmy felt himself pale, “Are the Avengers back?” he whispered. He didn’t want to go through that again. He still had nightmares. “I’m afraid it’s something much worse.” Synyster answered. Jimmy swallowed thickly, “Worse? How could it be worse?” he asked a little shrilly. “Lucifer is going to try and kill you.” Vengeance answered. “Or he will drag you to Dimmur and torture you and then kill you and capture your soul and you’ll become a lower demon without willpower forced to serve his every whim until the end of time.” He deadpanned. Jimmy stared at him and then slowly lay down again. “I’m going back to sleep and you guys can wake me up when this nightmare is over.” He said shakily. Synyster glared at Vengeance and the demon had the decency to look a little cowed. “James, you need to come with us.” He coaxed gently. He shook his head, “Nope. Nu-uh. I’ve done my time in the Twilight Zone, I’m going to be normal now and forget you guys exist.” He pulled his covers over his head and huddled in the darkness. “James,” Shadows’ husky voice was closer and he gently tugged the blankets back but he had shut his eyes tightly, “I know you don’t want to do this. Vengeance is blunt but it is the truth. We need to get you away from here. The Fallen could be on their way now.”
“Why me?” he whimpered. He knew he was being whiny but really, why him? He had been his own man for only two years but he had made a home out of the cheap apartment just a few blocks from the video store where he worked and he was really starting to enjoy himself. “That’s why.” He muttered darkly slowly sitting up, “I can’t have a moment of peace.” He glared at Synyster even though the angel was doing everything he could to help. “Tell your former boss he can kiss my skinny white ass next time you see him.” Synyster’s lips twitched in a humorless smile, “I’ll certainly do that.”
“Do I need to pack or anything?” he sighed looking around at his meager yet loved possessions. “Pack a jacket.” Christ muttered. He looked at Shadows questioningly and the angel shook his head, “We’ll stay in the warmer climates. Take whatever you think you need. We need to move.” Jimmy pulled a backpack out from under the bed and tossed in a couple pairs of socks and underwear, spare jeans, and his three favorite shirts. “Okay.” He sighed forlornly shouldering the pack, “Let’s get this over with.” Shadows’ wing draped around him and he took one last fleeting glance at his personal oasis.
He didn’t really want to admit it, but he had missed the downy softness of Shadows’ feathers. He felt safer enveloped in their obsidian embrace. There was the uncomfortable prickly feeling and then the feathers lifted and he was dazzled by bright tropical sunlight. He blinked a few times to adjust and realized he knew this white sand paradise. “Déjà vu.” He muttered dropping his pack and sitting in the sand next to it. He knew he was pouting but he didn’t care. He needed a moment to mourn the almost normal life he had. To his surprise Shadows sat next to him with Synyster behind him while Vengeance and Christ dove into the water and began thrashing around. “What the hell are they doing?” he asked watching them flail in the water. “Stirring up the sharks.” Shadows answered lying back into Synyster’s lap. Synyster ran his long fingers through his hair and the bigger angel’s shoulders loosened some. Jimmy reached over and ran his fingers through his sooty feathers for a few minutes before he decided to call out the white elephant in the room. “Why does Satan want me dead?” he asked with a tired sigh. “He still stuck on that Adam and Eve thing?” He lay down with his head on Shadows’ wing and admitted he had missed this, a little. “No.” Shadows answered heavily. “He has…” he trailed off and Jimmy sat up and stared down at him. He hadn’t known the angel for very long but he had never seen him uncertain or hesitant on anything. “He’s lost his fucking mind.” Synyster filled bitterly. Shadows nodded, “That’ll work.”
“Fantastic! The head honcho of all things evil has gone crazy and now he’s got it out for me. Fuck. My. Life.” He groaned lying down again and curling into the fetal position. “He’s got it out for all of us.” Synyster murmured. Jimmy looked up at him, “So, how’d he go crazy and why does he want me dead?” Synyster kept one hand going through Shadows’ hair and the other dropped down to the arch of his wing and smoothed the feathers. Shadows made a low pleased sound in the back of his throat and his hard body relaxed a bit more. “He thinks he can conquer Eldur.” Synyster said quietly. Jimmy stared at him for a moment and then shrugged. “I’m guessing that’s pretty bold?” he ventured. “It’s fool hardy and suicidal.” Shadows answered. “He thinks since we beat the Avengers to save you that he has a chance of invading and crushing Eldur forces once and for all.” Synyster picked up. “In order to secure his victory though…he thinks he needs…this thing.” He said slowly. “He wants to make a Berserker.” He whispered. Jimmy continued to stare at him. “What the hell is a Berserker?” a shudder went through Shadows’ body and a flash of unease ghosted through Synyster’s eyes. “There has only been one Berserker.” He said softly. Shadows thumped his wings, Jimmy’s cue to get up, and then he stood and slowly paced back and forth on the pristine sand.
“Back when Eldur and Dimmur fought openly there was an angel, a Fallen, named Frenzy. Do you remember when I told you how angels and demons bond differently from humans?” he asked looking down at Jimmy. He nodded once looking out at Vengeance and Christ and the two fins circling them. “You mean the whole crazy thing, right?” Shadows nodded, “Yes. Frenzy had a lover he was deeply bonded to. His lover was eventually killed in battle and Frenzy slowly went insane. He gave himself over to bloodlust and became the most feared of the Fallen for his merciless kills. Lucifer commended his kills but some could see the madness in him. He eventually stopped making distinctions between Eldur and Dimmur forces and simply killed everything. Absolutely everything. He became so powerful it took Lucifer to stop him and that was only after he had caused heavy casualties on both sides. After his death Avengers and Fallen alike began to refer to him as Berserker.” He stopped and looked out where the two demons were playing with their sharp toothed friends. “According to Vivian, Lucifer wants to make another Berserker and then storm Eldur.” He whispered. Synyster picked himself up from the sand and pressed against his back softly whispering to him. Jimmy sat up as well, “He wants to make someone totally insane.” He said flatly. He couldn’t believe it. Shadows nodded, “That’s why you have to stay with us.” He said softly. Jimmy stared up at him a little frightened, “Why?”
“Because he loves you Jimmy.” Synyster whispered. “And if anything happened to you I would be one step closer to being the next Berserker.” Shadows said lowly.
