Reason:
The reason why he chose to stand out in front of thousands of people, playing his heart out was always a mystery to him. Yes, he had been doing this intentionally to get the money, get all the girls, but now he wasn’t so sure. He didn’t know why and boy was it bothering him. But he never mucked up on stage. Not once.
He stood backstage with the other four members of his band, his black fedora covering his eyes as he strummed on his instrument, although the exciting and always extravagant noise that normally came from his guitar was muted because he wasn’t plugged in to his amplifier, creating a sound consisting of only soft, rattling strings. Although, despite this muted sound, it still managed to capture the attention of the rest of the band, who looked on intently.
His head snapped up to glare at them for looking at what he was doing. “What the hell are you all staring at?” He snapped. Three of the four men all muttered their apologies, turning away while the shorter guitarist smiled at him before turning away.
What he’d gotten from this band was more then he ever expected and wanted. His band had gained thousands of fans across the world, all of them knowing exactly who he was but he hadn’t the slightest idea who they were. This made him confused that so many teenaged girls could scream their lungs out in the pit in front of him, just to get a single look from him, and then afterwards would tell him how much they loved him.
What he also got was a lover. He didn’t want one of those, especially considering how attractive some of their fans were, but didn’t push this away when it came knocking on his door. His lover was his best friend, a man, the shorter guitarist in their band. But they were only known as lovers to each other; too afraid to confess their relationship to their friends in the fears that they’d get kicked out of the band they’d worked so hard to start. So they kept quiet, only showing their love and affection to each other in the hotel rooms or while they were at home, occasionally on the tour bus when they were drunk so they could have an excuse.
The chanting for their band was getting louder and louder by the second. His heart was beating a million miles an hour, so he sunk his shoulders back down so his black fedora was covering his eyes and he kept practicing the set list over and over again until they had to perform, even if his fingers became bloody and the skin began to crack, he wouldn’t stop until they had to go on.
But why did he do it? Why did he stand there playing his instrument when he could’ve easily given up on everything? They could’ve stopped, given up, not even be recognized as musicians outside of their home town. But they didn’t. They all had the desire, the will, the passion; everything that would make them into the outstanding musicians that they were today.
Then it hit him. When he was nearly ten and his father was asking him what he wanted for his birthday, he could’ve told him anything in the world, but when he replied with a giant grin on his face, almost screaming out the words “a guitar” in absolute excitement. And on his tenth birthday, he begged his father to start teaching him straight away, just so he could show his best friends at his birthday party just what he could do.
The thought never occurred to him what would’ve happened if he would’ve told his father anything but a guitar. He might’ve ended up working at an office somewhere, still earning money, but feeling jealous that he saw his best friends rise to fame. Although, inside of him, he had this small feeling that the band wouldn’t have made it very far without him, as obnoxious as that sounded.
The loud chanting grew in volume and it only served to remind him of why he did this. The feeling of his guitar strapped to him, the weight slightly pulling on his muscular shoulder was too good to not have on him, but that’s not why he did it. He was in the band with his four best friends, one of them being his lover, and they were having the best fun in their lives, but that was only a part of the reason.
He did it for the thousands of people that chanted their band name every night in the various arenas, the people that cued up for days outside just to get in the front row, the ones that hung around outside the venue for hours just to get a glimpse at the band; the fans. He did it for the adrenaline rush that they always seemed to give him when he stepped out on that stage, when he was pressed shoulder to shoulder with the other guitarist when they shared an electrifying solo or when he had the singer playfully shoving him as he roamed the stage, screaming out the lyrics or when he saw their small bass player always seemed to make the funniest faces when he played or even when he glanced over to the drummer, seeing him in deep concentration as he played with all his heart; as they all played like this.
“Are we all ready?” The singer’s voice had a slight growl to it and he looked up to see the rest of the band already huddled around. He hastily joined them to form a circle, standing in between the drummer and the other guitarist.
“Hang on.” He said with a slight grin that got raised eyebrows from the other four as he leant over and pressed his own thin lips harshly onto the other guitarist’s plump lips, making the smaller man gasp in surprise. There would be time for questions later. He pulled back with a grin, “I’m ready.”
The other four all agreed although the singer kept a firm eye on the two guitarists for the moment before they all took a deep breath and the drummer headed out first, a loud scream of excitement was heard, giving them all a funny feeling in their stomachs. The singer and the bassist ran out next, more screams of excitement being heard. “I love you.” The smaller guitarist smiled weakly, kissing the larger one on the cheek.
“I love you too.” He smiled back before they both took their precautionary deep breaths before running out onto the stage, getting the loudest cheer from the crowd. A smile graced all of their lips as they launched into their first song. The adrenaline rush seemed to have kicked into everyone as they poured all their emotion into their playing.
This was why he did it.
