I watched the waitress go off to tell the kitchen staff my order, then looked at my cell phone clock. 8:09. She was late, but I’d forgive her that. Not to be clichéd but this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I turned to the door as the entrance bell dinged, and she came in. The beautiful, former Disney star, going with black hair for the foreseeable future, it seemed, saw me and waved. I waved back and called her to the booth. As she sat down, she went into an excuse rant, saying, “My alarm went off late, then the shower wouldn’t heat up, no matter how long I waited. I’m still a little pruny. Then my hair dryer had a short, so it was towel dry.” She sighed, gave me a little smile, and said, “This is turning out great, huh?” I chuckled and said, “Well, yeah. This is why I entered the contest: to see how you normally are, day-to-day. Of course, it was ‘A Day with Demi,’ but one’s better than none at all.” The waitress came over with my food, and I said to Demi, “I hope you don’t mind that I already ordered.” She smiled more, saying, “No, it’s fine.” Then she looked at my food, and said to the waitress, “Could I have the same?” The waitress nodded, then went to tell the cooks. When Demi’s food came, we started eating. A few bites in, she asked about what I did for a living. I swallowed and told her that it was a bit of an old story, but I had come to L.A. to make something of myself. I said, “I want to get into the movie business, if not acting, then directing. I have ideas in my head, and they’re begging to be let out. But that’s a no-go at the moment, so to answer you more directly, I sell stories to magazines and websites.” She nodded, taking another bite, then when that was down, she said, “Anything I would’ve read?” I said that I didn’t think so. “I’ve only sold a couple. And the mags and sites aren’t well known.” She nodded again and said, “Well, don’t give up hope on the movie dream. Hope is good.” Then she gave my hand a light touch, saying, “And I’ve only just met you, but I have faith in you.” I smiled, thanked her, then we started eating again. She then asked where we would be going after breakfast. I leaned back some, swallowed, and said, “I thought that we would just let the day guide us. No planning or anything. Just go where ka wills us.” She raised an eyebrow and said, “Ka?” I told her it was a term from a book series that meant fate or destiny. I said, “There’s a phrase that goes with it: ‘Ka is a wheel, and whatever thing that stands on it, will not stand long,’ or something along those lines.” She said, “Cool. Maybe I’ll give it a read.” I asked about her, now, and she said, “Judging by our sitting here, you already know about me.” I told her that was public stuff, and said, “I want to know about you. Demetria Lovato, the closeted version. I mean--not to say that you’re--not to imply--Ah, hell, I’m already screwing up.” Meanwhile, she was laughing, and when she could speak, she said, “No, it’s all right. I understand what you mean. Let me see… I’m a sci-fi geek, a secret Elmore Leonard fan. I think Duck Soup is the greatest comedy ever, Tarantino is amazing, and Eliot was a fantastic poet.” I smiled, said, “Cool,” and we went back to our food, more than halfway done. Then I said, “Though Blazing Saddles would be the best in my book.” She told me that it was funny, but Duck Soup had Groucho. She said, “Where can you go wrong with the Marxes?” I gave her that, we finished up, and after I paid, we left the diner. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
