Thursday September 26, 1997 some where outside of Des Moines, Iowa......
"I don't know how to really say this James," Mick Thomson said, staring at the slowly setting sun. "But I lo...."
"You don't have to say it, Mick," James Root, sitting next to the younger man on the dry grass by the side of the road, said as he took Mick's hand in his. "I know it already."
"Good," Mick said, smiling.
Wednesday September 26, 2007; Des Moines, Iowa.....7:00 am
Ten years today, Mick thought, smiling as he stood watching the man sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper and trying to wake himself up before they headed to Jamaica, Iowa to meet up with the rest of their band, Slipknot, to continue work on their newest album. And we're still together, despite all the shit we've gone through with him going out on the road with Corey and Stone Sour, the fans finding out via Sid's big mouth and our own families trying to separate us.
"Mick, you okay?" James asked, glancing up at his boyfriend.
"Uh, yeah, I was just goin' to say we need to get going," the younger man replied. "Or we'll be late and there'll be hell to pay."
"Yeah, you're right. The sooner we get done, the sooner we can get home," James said, folding the paper up and standing. "Lemme grab a jacket and we can go."
"Um, okay," Mick said, frowning as he watched James leave the kitchen and head down the hall to their room.
It's still early, there's no way he's forgotten, he thought, going into the living room and grabbing his own jacket from the back of the chair by the door. We've been together ten years and he's never forgotten anything of importance. Ever.
"You ready to go?" James asked, walking into the room.
"Yeah."
"Who's car are we taking? Mine or yours?"
"I don't care," Mick said, shaking his head.
"Mine it is," James said, grabbing his car keys and heading out the door.
He forgot, the younger man thought, frowning, as he followed his lover.
Sound Farm and Recording Environment, Jamaica, Iowa.....
"You guys are late!," Corey Taylor said when he saw the gleaming red 1970 'Cuda +440 pull up the drive way.
A hand appeared out of the window, giving him the finger.
"Are they here yet?" Joey Jordison asked, walking outside to stand by Corey.
"Yeah, they just showed up," he said, glancing at the smaller man.
"They're late," he said.
"I know they are," Corey said, looking back at the car and the two men getting out of it. "You guys are late."
"And you're an asshole," James said, walking up to his friend.
Mick didn't say anything, he only walked past James, Corey and Joey, and disappeared into the studio.
"Something wrong with him?" Joey asked, looking at James.
"I think he's just tired," the older man said, "like we all are."
"Yeah, he's never been a morning person," Corey said, "well, let's get to work so we can get the hell out of here."
"Sounds good to me," James said, following Corey and Joey into the studio, still unknowing as to why Mick was so moody and sullen.
When he stepped into the building, he saw Mick talking to Paul Grey and Chris Fehn.
"Hey, Jimmy," Chris said, looking at the taller man and smiling. "You guys are late."
"We're not late," James said, moving to stand next to Mick but when he tried to put his arm around the other man, Mick pushed him away and walked off.
"What's up with him?" Paul asked.
"He's cranky, that's all."
"You sure?" Chris asked.
"Yeah, he's just tired. He was up late last night doing something in the basement," James said, "I don't know what he was doing, he wouldn't let me down there."
“He was probably watching porn and didn’t want you to catch him,” the percussionist said.
“Probably, but he was fine before we left the house.”
"Whatever, we gotta get to work," Paul said. "You guys can figure things out later."
"Yeah, we've got all day," James said, following Paul down the hall towards the room they where recording the guitar and bass tracks in. "But it's like he's mad at me or something."
"Is there anything important going on?" Paul asked.
"Not that I know of."
**4:30 pm....**
"Clown, I'm taking a break," Mick said.
"Whatever."
Sighing, Mick stood up and looked at the man huddled over the control board before he left the small control room and stepped into the hallway.
"MICK!!"
Looking to his left, he found Sid Wilson bouncing his way with a grin on his face.
"What Sid?" he asked the younger man.
"Me, Jim, and Paul are goin' to town later, you wanna come?" Sid asked.
At the mention of his boyfriend's name, Mick bristled and his mood got even darker. "You okay, man?"
"Yeah, I'm going for a walk," Mick said, stalking past Sid.
"Um, okay," the younger man said, watching the bigger man walk out the door, then he asked the empty hallway, "what's his problem?"
Outside, James was enjoying the late afternoon sun with Corey, Paul and Chris on a much needed break from the monotony of recording.
"I should buy some land out here and build a house," Corey said, leaning back in his chair and smiling.
"You couldn't handle it," Paul said.
"Yeah, I could. The peace and quiet would help me write."
"No, you'd freak out because it's so quiet," James said, shaking his head. "And I don't think Scarlett wants to drive forty miles so Griffin can see you on the weekends."
"I would go and get him," Corey said, then he saw Mick come out of the studio. "Hey, Mick!"
James looked over his shoulder and smiled when he saw the other man.
"C'mere, Mick," he called, gesturing for his boyfriend to join them.
Instead of moving to join the four, Mick gave them all the finger and stalked off towards the open field on one side of the house/studio.
"What's his problem?" Paul asked, looking at James.
"Yeah, man, what'd you do?" Corey asked.
"Nothing, as far as I know," James replied, watching as Mick got farther away.
"Dude, he's your boyfriend and you don't know what's wrong with him?" Chris asked.
"No, I don't know what's wrong. He was fine this morning, but as soon as we left the house he started giving me the cold shoulder."
"Maybe you should go and talk to him," Corey suggested.
"Yeah, he looked pretty pissed off," Paul added.
Sighing, James looked in the direction Mick had gone.
Something had obviously upset his boyfriend, but he didn't know what was wrong.
"Are you going to sit there for the rest of the day or find out what's wrong with the big man?" Chris asked.
"I can do it for you," Corey offered.
"No, I'll do it," James said, standing up.
"You sure you don't want me to go?"
"I'm sure, Corey, I can handle him on my own."
"Alright."
"Good luck," Chris said.
"Yeah, call us if you need help!" Corey called after his friend.
Ignoring the three laughing men behind him, James headed off in the same direction Mick had gone.
Mean while, Mick had walked a fair distance and could only see the farm house in the distance when his cell phone started ringing.
Pulling it from his pocket, he flipped it open and looked at the caller ID.
It was James.
"Asshole," he muttered, flipping the phone shut and stuffing it back into his pocket as he kept walking.
I can't believe he forgot, he thought, walking up a small rise. Fuck, I'm whining like a chic, or Joey, but I have a right to be mad! He fucking forgot!!
Hoping the ground was dry, Mick sat down and sighed. Well, I can't stay mad at him forever, I mean it's the first time in ten years that James has forgotten anything.
"MICK!!"
Looking over his shoulder, he saw James heading his way.
"Mickael Gordon Thomson, I am talking to you!" James called, when his lover didn't move to meet him.
Mick did move in fact, he stood up but instead of going towards James he started to walk away from him.
"Damn it, Mick, talk to me," James said, following the younger man. "What's wrong? Did I do something wrong?"
"Obviously," Mick snapped, stopping to glare at James.
"What'd I do, Mick?" James asked, walking up slowly to his boyfriend.
"Forgotten the last ten years of our life together, James! That's what you did!"
"Huh?"
"Do you know what today is, James?" Mick asked.
"Wednesday?" James asked.
"Fucking moron! It's our tenth fucking anniversary, Jim!!"
For a moment, the older man's face was blank as he processed what Mick had said, then it all clicked into place.
"Oh shit," he breathed.
"Oh shit is right, James," Mick said, then he turned and started walking again.
And James was right behind him.
"Mick, Mikey, baby, I am so sorry," he said, "we've been so busy that I totally blanked on it."
Mick snorted and kept walking across the field towards a copse of trees. "C'mon, Mick, talk to me. How can I fix this?"
"You want to know how you can "fix" this?" Mick asked, looking at James.
"Yes."
"You can leave me alone, that's what you can do," he said as he kept walking.
James stopped in his tracks and watched Mick walk away.
Good going, retard, he thought, looking down at the ground. I've gotta fix this, or else he'll be mad at me for the rest of the week.
Looking up again, he saw that Mick was half way across the field. But what can I do to make things right?
Watching as Mick got further away, James stood there for a minute more before he too started walking.
Mick could hear James walking behind him, but he didn't stop or look back at the other man until he was half way to the copse of trees.
Looking back over his shoulder, he saw the taller man had stopped walking as well and was standing about ten feet away from him.
"Mick," James said, taking a step towards the younger man. "Can we just talk about this?"
"Whatever," Mick grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest and looking away.
Sighing in relief, James walked closer to his boyfriend until he was right in front of him.
"C'mon, let's sit and talk this out," he said, taking hold of Mick's arm and dragging him over to a fallen tree.
"There's nothing to talk about, Jim," Mick said, sitting down on the log. "Nothing at all."
"Okay then, can we just sit here?” James asked, sitting next to Mick.
“I guess, but don’t touch me or I’ll beat the crap out of you.”
“I will keep my hands right here where you can see them,” James said, putting his hands in his lap.
“Good.”
The two men sat in silence, watching the slowly setting sun .
“I remember the night you told me that you loved me,” James said after about ten minutes of silence.
“Oh, that’s good, because you forgot our anniversary,” Mick said, glaring at the setting sun.
“It was like this, except we where sitting on the side of the road outside of town and you where so nervous that you where stuttering,” James said, smiling and forgetting his promise to keep his hands to himself as he put his arm around Mick’s shoulders.
“Well, what was I supposed to do? Just come out and say it?” Mick asked.
“Yeah, but you didn’t have to say anything. I knew, and I still know,” the older man replied.
“But you forgot our anniversary,” Mick said again, this time looking at James.
“And I’m sorry for it, babe, I really am, but like I said we’ve all been so busy that we forget things. I mean, look at Clown. He forgot to pick the kids up from school last week, remember that phone call?”
“Yeah, I’ve never see him so whipped, in fact I’ve never seen him whipped,” Mick said, sighing and leaning against James’ side.
“So do you forgive me?”
“Yeah, but I’m still pissed off at you, James. You forgot something that‘s very important to me.”
“Well you should’ve told me what today was, Mick, then I wouldn’t have forgotten,” James said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his cigarettes and lighter. “But you still love me, right?”
“Yeah, I do,” Mick sighed, watching the sunset. “It really is beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it is,” James said, but he wasn’t watching the sunset, he was watching his lover.
For a while they sat in silence, enjoying each others company and knowing that everything was okay between them, until the sound a lighter broke the silence.
“I really wish you wouldn’t light up so close to me,” Mick said.
“Why?” James asked, taking a drag from his cigarette.
“Because I’m afraid you’re going to catch my hair on fire.”
“I love you too, baby.”
